How to Start a Calligraphy Business
I presume you know a little more about tracing the base line and drawing the nib latter if
you are seeking how to start a calligraphy business. You do not have to be Paul
Antonio, Laura Hooper, or Lindsey Bugbee just yet. If you are curious as to who they
are, Google “calligraphy blog” and you will see their blogs/business in the top ranks.
BUT!
You probably wouldn’t mind being like them and owning your own calligraphy business
either. So before you start foaming at the mouth to draw built up letters, there are two
starting points that you can jump into for this hobby that makes money:
1. Tried and True. Ductus is your middle name, and you are ready to show the world all
the elegant masterpieces you have created or will create. Let start a business.
2. You had to “google” several of the words in the last few paragraphs. It is ok because
calligraphy will never die out, and there is a need for outstanding individuals like you to
continue the long tradition.
If you are new to calligraphy or just starting, it is essential for you to become
comfortable with the steady hand. What I mean is take the time to learn a variety of
techniques. Do not be afraid to push past your comfort zone. This advice is also for the
tried and true. Your business will grow to a point that you will have a customer request
something a little out of your league. It is better to take the time to learn now, then trying
while meeting the demands of all your other loyal followers.
The traditional way of learning calligraphy was through apprenticeship or taking a few
classes at the community college. That is no longer the case. Though you can still do
that, a simple search on calligraphy techniques will yield more than enough information
to get you started. The bottom line is to be comfortable with the art by the time you
decide to conquer the world.
Now, let say you have the skills. I am sure you already have a few of the essential tools.
Pen and paper. Great! That is all you need. If you think about it, starting a calligraphy
business can be minimum impact on your wallet. Alternatively, like me, you get super
excited about something new, so you go out and buy the top of the line product and
every single accessory you can find for it. Then, while you are waiting in line at the
counter and have a shopping cart worth 10 million dollars you put your shades on, chew
a piece of bubble gum and stare at the latest issue of Cosmopolitan. Life does not get
any better than this.
I am sorry, I digressed.
Your basic startup cost will depend on how much equipment you already have. There
are plenty of beginner calligraphy sets out there. The typical set onAmazon will cost you
$20-$30 dollars. Parchment and calligraphy paper will not cost that much either.
Now, if you want to sell to you mom, sister, aunt, cousin, friends and co-workers for a
while, then that is about all you need from the hobbies that make money guide.
However, I know you are here for more than that. You want to earn between $500-
$5000 a month selling your finest work. Alternatively, you want to take it to the next level
and turn your business outward and earn the right to chill in the mountains for a month
while the money keeps rolling into your bank account since it is a great way to make
money online 2015, Yeah!
In all sincerity, both can be done. It will take some work, dedication, and many hours
upfront making next to nothing. However, the great thing about the passive business
model is that the beginning is the hard part. Once you establish your foundation, then
you can explode up to new heights. Even better is all the work you put in continues to
work for you. Yes, even while you are sleeping.
Here are the steps we will take but it does not end at 10, and there are substeps for
each and I will continue to post in my blog different techniques to ensure you are
multiplying your financial gains.
1. Learn calligraphy or define your product (We are past this)
2. Determine the name of your business.
3. Register your business with your state
