Selling Your Boat? The Top 10 Things toKnow Before You ShowSelling a used vessel is not unlike selling ahome. Presentation is everything, bothonline and upon close personal inspection. In today’s economy, luxury items such asyachts are not in high demand. The fewactive buyers are only interested in clean, well maintained boats….AND they expect to get a great deal to boot! If you are in aposition where you need to sell, please review my top 10 recommendations to get thebest price in the least amount of time.

1. Remove excess clutter from theboat. A “well lived in” appearance willnot maximize your return! Have anyremaining gear neatly stowed andorganized. This costs you nothing.

2. When was your last engineservice? If it’s been a year or more, consider a professional check-up,routine service and oil change. Mostengine surveys include oil sampling, and dirty oil will likely have highcontaminant levels, and throw aperfectly good deal into turmoil. Trans-missions are often overlooked. Be surezincs are not wasted, and that fluidlevels are within limits, including batterywater.

3. Repair any obvious deficienciesnow, rather than let them rear their uglyheads in the marine survey. If repairsare impractical, be prepared to makeallowances for them. Buyers expectlisted equipment to be in properworking order. However, repairingoutdated or worn-out equipment is

often a waste of money. Discuss withyour Broker. A repair credit toward anew item may be more enticing to abuyer.

4. Once engine service or generalrepairs are complete, have the boatprofessionally detailed inside and out.Don’t look for the cheapest wax job.Generally you get what you pay for.Repair gelcoat damage if needed.Don’t forget the engine room, bilges, and lazarettes.

5. If it smells, it won’t sell! Makesure the holding tank is pumped anddeodorizer added. There are naturalenzyme sprays that can break downboat odors without undesirable sideeffects.

6. Shampoo or replace carpet thatis dirty or worn. Old carpet usuallyholds odors. Fresh carpet can make aboat look and smell new again.Consider fresh varnish on any woodflooring.

Page 3: How To Sell Your Yacht

7. Consider replacing canvas andeisenglass if in poor condition. This isalways expensive, and vendors areoften backed up for several weeks.Sometimes a good detailing servicecan clean mildew stains on canvas andrecondition eisenglass with acceptableresults, saving you a bundle.

8. Do a pre-sea trail if the boat hasbeen sitting unused for a while. Gettingtowed in by Vessel Assist will notimpress a perspective buyer! Checkfor ease of start-up, excessive smokeor vibration, and proper full-throttleRPM without overheating or alarmsgoing off. Exercise all systems routinelyon a regular basis.

9. How much is my boat worth? Agood Yacht Broker should provide youwith a comparative market analysis(CMA) of current active listings andrecent sold comparables. Overpricedboats will sit on the market indefinitely, costing you much more in the long run! Also discuss their brokerage salesexperience, marketing plan andgeneral boating knowledge. Checkonline to see how their listings arepresented on Yachtworld.com. Whatyou see is probably what you will get!

10. Keep the boat clean inside andout, but don’t let it sit unused andneglected. Regular wash-downs arebest…no more than two weeks apart.Exercise engines and systems at leastmonthly to keep them in working order.

The more things you do, the faster theboat will sell, and the better the price.Of course, expense is a major factor. Aprofessional Broker can offer opinionsas to what particular improvementswould be most cost effective withinyour budget…. and can providereferrals for the best vendors. Remem-ber, “You never get a second chance tomake a good first impression! “

How to Choosethe Right Slip

One of the most important decisions arecreational boater can make is inchoosing a slip.

A few short years ago, that was not aproblem because if there was a slipavailable somewhere, it was most likely a"take it or leave it" situation. But for themoment, because of the current economy, there are many more choices.

A first consideration is the prevailing winddirection? If the slip you're choosing hasyou docking in a crosswind, it will be morechallenging to grease it in than if the windis nose-on or on your stern, especially if it'sa double slip.

If it's a double slip with a prevailing cross-wind, it may be easier for you to dock onthe downwind side, but if your neighbor isnot too swift at docking, after a few bumpsyou might wish you were on the up side. Also, don't share a double slip with aneighbor who is "too broad in the beam".

Be aware that wind velocity can also varygreatly, even within the same marina. Itcan be calm as a cucumber at A-Dock upby the ramps, and gale force out at I-Dock.This also can add to the excitement ofdocking.

Then there's the view from the slip toconsider. Take a good look around fromthat slip you're considering - You'll belooking at what you see for a long time.

Other things to consider are - what is theorientation of the sun to the slip. If yourstern will be pointing due West, it will bevery hot in the afternoons, and on manydays you will have to wait until sunset toenjoy your back porch. Breakfast on theback deck in this scenario, however, will beperfect.

A couple of other points - noise cansometime be a factor - and how far is itfrom your slip to the head of the docks? You may want to use the marina facilitiesat two in the morning instead of the facili-ties on-board.

Also, is the available power 30 amps or 50amps? If your boat is underpowered (manyboats are wired for 30 amps, but don't tryto use the oven and a hair dryer at thesame time if you're splitting the circuit), -ask if there's an opportunity for two 30 ampconnections?

Another thing people often don't thinkabout is that because of the wind currentflow, every marina has a few spots whereflotsam and jetsam tends to accumulate. You should be able to determine wherethese spots are on any given day with aquick walk of the docks.

Last but not least, make sure your power, cable, and water hookups are on the cor-rect side of your boat. This is also a con-sideration on a single slip.

For a buyer… there has never been a better time to purchase a vessel. Youcan buy more boat for less money than ever before. But don’t wait too long. While great deals still abound, with consumer confidence and key indicatorsof the housing market hitting 4-year highs, the buyer’s market may finally beturning around.

For sellers… to maximize your return and minimize marketing time, yourboat must reach its full potential, (as outlined previously); be priced right, and have a first-class presentation online.

In either case, you will be assured professional and knowledgeable guidancethrough every step…before, during, and after the sale. I have been success-fully Brokering Yachts since 1987. I was a top producer at several of the bet-ter San Diego Brokerages for 14 years, learning from the best of the best.

I obtained my Broker’s license and founded YachtSource in 2001. With over26 years of experience, hundreds of transactions, and as a respected CYBAMember, I have earned a solid reputation as one of the “good guys” in theindustry.
