WHAT ARE MAJORS, MINORS and/or SPECIALISATIONS?

At the Australian National University your Program is the degree/s you are studying, which are made up of units grouped together to form majors, minors and/or specialisations. Each Program at the Australian National University has different Program Requirements, which determine how many majors, minors and/or specialisations you are required to complete to be awarded your degree/s. On Programs and Courses, you will be able to check your Program Requirements in your Program Outline. Some common structures include:

c

Please note that all undergraduate degrees require the completion of at least one major and one minor, except where

identified as otherwise in their Program Requirements.

To begin the process of self-selecting your majors, minors and/or specialisations in ISIS, you will first need to check your Program Requirements in Programs & Courses. If your program requirements do not include the need to complete a major, minor or specialisation (such as programs from the ANU Colleges of Law, Engineering and Computer Science, and the School of Medicine) there is no need to go any further. Once you have determined which majors, minors or specialisations you are intending to complete, you may continue to the next steps. You will be able to complete this process twice a year in the two Standard Sessions, from the start of the semester to the semester Census Date, only. First Semester Census Date: 31 March Second Semester Census Date: 31 August Please note that you are indicating your intention to complete these majors, minors and/or specialisations only. Your College will still assess your eligibility for the indicated majors, minors and/or specialisations from the units you actually have completed when you are preparing to graduate.

HELP INFORMATION

Question Answer How many majors, minors and specialisations can I select?

You may have a maximum of two majors, two minors and one specialisation per academic program.

Question Answer When can I update my majors, minors and specialisations?

You will have from the start of a semester to the semester Census Date to manage your majors, minors and/or specialisations. For First Semester, the close will be 31 March, and for Second Semester the close will be 31 August.

Question Answer Can I update my majors, minors and specialisations more than once?

Yes, you may have up to 2 opportunities each year to manage your majors, minors and/or specialisations. However, please note that you may only update your majors, minors and/or specialisations once during the open periods each half-year. .

Question Answer What does it mean if I cannot select or cannot see the program that I want to manage the majors, minors or specialisations for?

This may mean that the majors, minors and specialisations selection period is closed, that your program is currently not active, or that you have an expected change to your Program already established for a future date (e.g., if you are already eligible to graduate you will have an expected graduation date that administration have recorded in your account, and you will not be able to alter your majors, minors and/or specialisations). You will receive the below message in this instance. For assistance, please check that the selection period is open, and then contact Student Information Services for more information (contact details below).

Question Answer What does it mean if I cannot select or cannot see the majors, minors or specialisations that I want to add to my program?

This may mean that the majors, minors and/or specialisations you are looking for are either not available for your program, or that you are looking for it in the wrong category (e.g. looking for it in the majors category, when it is a specialisation). If you cannot find the major, minor and/or specialisation, even though it is specifically listed in your Program outline, contact your Academic College for more information (contact details below).

Question Answer What do I do if I get the error message ‘You can have a maximum of 3 majors, minors or specialisations per academic program. To make changes to your selection, you must ‘Delete’ one of your existing choices.’

You will need to delete one of the nominated majors, minors and specialisations from your program if you wish to add a different one in its place. To do so, follow Steps 16 – 18. An example of this error message is below.

Question Answer I have selected that I want to add a major, minor or specialisation but no options are appearing for me to choose from. What do I do?

This means that your program does not offer any options in that particular category. For instance, you might be studying a degree that does not allow minors. If you select minors from the drop-down list, nothing will appear. Try selecting a different major, minor or specialisation category instead. If the problem persists, this may be an IT or browser related error. Either try this process on a computer running the Mozilla Firefox browser, or contact Student Information Services for assistance (contact details below).

Question Answer How do I know if I have satisfied the requirements for my chosen majors, minors and/or specialisations?

Check Programs and Courses- the major, minor or specialisation outline page will display the requirements for your reference.

Question Answer If I have not nominated any majors, minors or specialisations when I am due to graduate, what will appear on my transcript?

Your majors, minors and/or specialisations will be identified by College staff as part of the graduation checking process. Major, minor and/or specialisation requirements that have been met will be included in your transcript.

Question Answer When am I required to have made a final decision on my majors, minors and/or specialisations by?

This will depend upon your program. Not all programs require you to nominate majors, minors and/or specialisations. Please check Programs and Courses to verify your Program has major, minor and/or specialisation requirements. Those that do, you will have only the specific selection open period each semester to make your choices. If you arrive at the end of your degree and you have not elected any majors, minors and/or specialisations, you may approach your College to nominate these up until the graduation checking period commences. After the graduation checking period commences you will be assigned majors, minors and/or specialisations based upon the requirements you have met. Each Academic College will have a separate graduation checking period- you will need to consult with your College directly to ensure you meet their internal deadlines.

Question Answer Who should I contact if I do not know what majors, minors or specialisations to select?

In the first instance, try to look at the Program Requirements for your degree/s in Programs & Courses. This will let you know how many of each category you need to select, and may help you select which ones you are interested in. If you are still having difficulty, contact your Academic College for Academic Advice (contact details below).
