Reading for breadth
Build a frameworkWhat did they do? (by skimming abstract, introduction, headings, graphics, definitions, conclusions and bibliography)Decide whether to go on
![Page 30: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Reading for breadth
Order mattersExtract the high-level idea first, then the details
![Page 31: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Reading for depth
Challenge what you readHow did they do it?How can I apply their approach to my work?
![Page 32: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Reading for depth
Scientific skepticismExamine the (implicit) assumptionsExamine the methodsExamine the statisticsExamine the conclusions
![Page 33: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Examine the (implicit) assumptions
Questions to askDo their results rely on any assumptions about trends orenvironments? Are these assumptions reasonable?
![Page 34: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Examine the methods
Questions to askDid they measure what they claim? Can they explain what they observed?Did they have adequate controls? Were tests carried out in a standard way?
![Page 35: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Examine the statistics
Questions to askWere appropriate statistical tests applied properly?Did they do proper error analysis? Are the results statistically significant?
![Page 36: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Examine the conclusions
Questions to askDo the conclusions follow logically from the observations? What other explanations are there for the observed effects? What other conclusions or correlations are there in the data thatthey did not point out?
![Page 37: How to Read Academic Papers](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042515/5558381dd8b42ac6078b49a9/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
