1BSome Thoughts on Producing a Short Film in Ireland
“one egg – one basket” i.e every little thing is an opportunity for failure or success
What does a producer actually do on a low budget short film? A producer allows the director to realise the script. He or she will accept the responsibility of making or not making the script. He or she will be realistic when the director is idealistic. He or she will be idealistic when the director is realistic. The director is affected by every decision the producer makes, and the producer is affected by every decision the director makes. It all comes down to one word – trust.
12BDEVELOPMENT ‐
Choosing the right script Is the script yours? Seeking and obtaining funding ‐ applying for short film funding ‐ Film BASE / GFC / GFC / short shorts ‐ so important to build a good show reel Identifying Key Cast and Crew Breakdown of script Deciding on shooting format ‐ digital vs film ‐ hd vs digibeta vs dv ‐ super 16mm vs 35mm Look vs Cost The Extra Cost of Film
– Stock – Processing – Extra Lighting, Transport Costs – Telecine – Courier – Grading
Prov budget Prov schedule The redrafting process. Dealing with Funders The funding must always equal the budget.
19BPRE ‐ PRODUCTION ‐
Setting a date Use the phone ‐ it is not just about asking questions ‐ it is about establishing relationships Research every problem Sponsorship and the art of making a deal Overall management Crewing up – roles On set, what is expected of the crew Set up production team ‐ at least one production runner Casting ‐ organising auditions / rehersals ‐ filmBase register / The Attic /casting agents ‐ Reactors / Castaways WATCH OTHER SHORT FILMS Extras ‐ dealing with / getting them Prod design ‐ the overall look / locations / props / set dressing / costume / make up / hair Location ‐ recce / locking off Studio ‐ set contruction / set striking Camera / lighting tests Camera equipment ‐ format / renting accessories ‐ filters / lenses / advice ‐ ask people Lighting equipment ‐ renting ‐ Filmbase / Cine Electric Sound equipment – renting Grip equipment ‐ renting ‐ tracks ‐ FilmBase Transport ‐ equipment ‐ who will drive ‐ pick up lists ‐ equipment / people / props ‐ car vs van Catering ‐ on set
Sponsorship ‐ catering / construction equipment Insurance ‐ equipment / public liability Cashflow management / receipts / VAT Refine ‐ Budget / Schedule Legal Issues ‐ Release forms / contracts ‐ actors / locations / extras 1st AD ‐ shot listing
20BPRODUCTION ‐ Overall management ‐ solve problems before they occur Never assume ‐ always expect to be let down On set discipline Shooting ‐ use clapperboard / use first AD Shot listing Limits of ambition ‐ producer must support and question the ambition of what is to be shot Health and safety ‐ the buck stops with the producer GOOD SOUND ON SET ‐ always recce locations ‐ the most important thing
