How to Play Spoons:

A spoon consists of two parts...the handle and the cup. The best spoons to use are matching, ordinary stainless steel household spoons with a thick neck below the cup. A tablespoon for adults is easier while a teaspoon may work better for smaller hands, at least when learning.

Learn first sitting down. Put the cups back to back in your right hand (if right-handed). Put the ends of the spoons in the palm of your right hand. Lay your thumb over the top spoon, and put your pointer finger between the spoons to create a space about ¼ to ½ inch. Secure your other three fingers firmly under the bottom spoon to hold both in place.

With your left hand suspended slightly above the right hand, hit the spoons first on your leg, then on the underneath side of your left hand, making a clicking sound with each. Do in regular quarter notes, then back and forth as eighth notes, sixteenths, etc. Next, play one eighth on the leg and two sixteenths on the upper hand, then two eighths on the leg, two on the upper hand and vice versa.

In Fiddlin’ Jamboree, add whichever rhythms cited above that feel comfortable. Play spoons on measures where clapping and/or slapping are indicated. Imitating a similar rhythm would work well, or use any improvisational rhythm that seems to fit the music. Have fun spoonin’!
