Avoiding Plagiarism

There is a fine line between plagiarism and paraphrasing.

If the wording of the paraphrase is too close to the wording of the original content, then it is plagiarism.

The main ideas need to come through, but the wording has to be your own.

A quote will need to be the exact wording and the author and source will need to be identified.

Paraphrasing usually makes the passage shorter than the original.

Jacques Cousteau, in his book, The Oceans, reports that the Antarctic is a vast source of cold on our planet. Although Setsubun is not a national Japanese holiday, it is celebrated every year in February to welcome the season of spring. People throw beans out of their homes to get rid of devils and bring in good luck. Everyone eats the number of beans according to his/her age.

1. Circle the specialised words, i.e. the words that the text is actually about. These will need

to be included in your paraphrase, as without these words, the meaning of the paraphrase

will change completely.

2. Underline the keywords that can be changed. You now have a starting point to construct

your paraphrase.

3. Find other words and phrases that have similar meanings that can be used to replace the

keywords in the text. Use a thesaurus or dictionary to help if need be.
