HOW TO MANUALLY ENROLL STUDENTS OR NON-EDITING TEACHERS INTO A MOODLE COURSE 1 Get to know who can do what. Role responsibilities: Teacher Teachers can do almost anything within a course, including adding or changing the activities, backing up and restoring courses, and grading students. By default, teachers can enroll Non-editing teachers and Students into their classes. By default, users are not assigned the role of Teacher throughout the site, but are only assigned (enrolled) as a teacher to those courses they are teaching during the current semester. The same applies to students. Teachers can only teach in courses in which they have been enrolled as the Teacher. There may be more than one Teacher in a course (but only an Administrator can enroll a Teacher). Teachers determine what a student can do or see in a Moodle site. These permissions can vary with each course or with any of Moodle's many kinds of activities. For example, in some contexts, students may correct or grade other students' work, be encouraged to explore everything in a course and interact with other participants. In a different context, the student maybe guided upon a very defined path, with minimal interaction with others. A teacher may see what a student sees within a course by using the “Switch role to” link under the “Administration” block and selecting the “Student” role. Non-editing Teacher A non-editing teacher is able within a course to view and grade students' work but may not alter or delete any of the activities or resources. This role might typically be given to a classroom assistant for example. Student A user with the Student role in Moodle can participate in course activities and view resources but not alter them or see the class gradebook. They can see their own grades if the teacher has allowed this. When a student first joins Moodle they see all available courses. Once they have enrolled or been enrolled into at least one course they then only see their own courses in the “My Courses” section of the navigation block or via their dashboard. A student's view and navigation in Moodle will be different from the course teacher's or from students assigned to a different group. Students are usually automatically enrolled into Moodle courses but sometimes a Teacher will need to enroll a student manually.

1

Get to know who can do what. Role responsibilities:

Teacher • Teachers can do almost anything within a course, including adding or changing the

activities, backing up and restoring courses, and grading students. • By default, teachers can enroll Non-editing teachers and Students into their

classes. • By default, users are not assigned the role of Teacher throughout the site, but are

only assigned (enrolled) as a teacher to those courses they are teaching during the current semester. The same applies to students.

• Teachers can only teach in courses in which they have been enrolled as the Teacher. There may be more than one Teacher in a course (but only an Administrator can enroll a Teacher).

• Teachers determine what a student can do or see in a Moodle site. These permissions can vary with each course or with any of Moodle's many kinds of activities. For example, in some contexts, students may correct or grade other students' work, be encouraged to explore everything in a course and interact with other participants. In a different context, the student maybe guided upon a very defined path, with minimal interaction with others.

• A teacher may see what a student sees within a course by using the “Switch role to…” link under the “Administration” block and selecting the “Student” role.

Non-editing Teacher

• A non-editing teacher is able within a course to view and grade students' work but may not alter or delete any of the activities or resources.

• This role might typically be given to a classroom assistant for example. Student

• A user with the Student role in Moodle can participate in course activities and view resources but not alter them or see the class gradebook. They can see their own grades if the teacher has allowed this.

• When a student first joins Moodle they see all available courses. Once they have enrolled or been enrolled into at least one course they then only see their own courses in the “My Courses” section of the navigation block or via their dashboard.

• A student's view and navigation in Moodle will be different from the course teacher's or from students assigned to a different group.

• Students are usually automatically enrolled into Moodle courses but sometimes a Teacher will need to enroll a student manually.

2. On the Moodle Home page, scroll down and click on the course title for the course into which you want to enroll a Student or Non-Editing Teacher, e.g., “ENG112-Meta English Composition II (MacInnes).”

Note: Alternatively, find a course using the “Search Courses” field by typing the short course title, e.g., “ENG112-META” or even just the Teacher’s last name, e.g., “MacInnes.”

Note: If you are using a META course, you must enroll your Student or Non-editing Teacher into the META course rather than into the individual course sections.

COURSES ARE ALWAYS VISIBLE TO TEACHERS! COURSES ARE NOT ALWAYS VISIBLE TO STUDENTS.

Note: If a COURSE NAME is GREY, the COURSE is currently HIDDEN from students. If a course name is BLUE, it is currently VISIBLE to students. All the course names on the home screen below are GREY, which means they are HIDDEN from students. Although TEACHER NAMES are BLUE, the courses are NOT visible to students unless the COURSE NAME is BLUE.
