Intro: Cheap PIC ProgrammerThis programmer works only with PIC16F84 but i t's great because it never causes errors and works with almost all computers, unlike some other homemadeprogrammers.

step 1:Step one : MaterialsFor this programmer you won't need many materials. In fact , you will find all you need in your local electronics shop ;)

    So here's what materials you will need:-IC Board-RS232(Serial) FEMALE connector-BC547B or 2N3904 (I couldn't find the BC so i used 2N3904,it works great)-5.1 V diode-100 uF 16V Electrolytic Capacitor-18 PIN IC Socket-10Kohm resistor-15Kohm resistor

    OPTIONAL[-Flashing red LED / 2.1 V Standard Red LED-3.3Kohm Resistor]

    -PIC16F84A Microcontroller

Tools:-Soldering Iron-Scissors or any other cuting tool

    OPTIONAL[-Hot glue gun]

step 2:Step two : The schemeThis is the scheme you will use for your programmer. As you can see , i tagged two connection in the scheme as "Optional point" one and two .Those are the points where you will connect the "Optional" circuit i will show you in step 3

Image Notes1. Optional point one2. Optional point two

step 3:Step three : The optional circuitThe optional circuit consists of the LED and 3.3 Kohm resistor marked as optional in step one.One pin of the resistor goes in the Optional point one , the other pin goes in the anode(+) of the LED.The cathone(-) pin of the LED will go in Optional point two.If you don't understand , use the ell ipse marked area of the scheme below.

step 4:Step four : Let's build it !Ok , you've got all you need. Now it's time to build it.DON'T CUT THE IC BOARD YET!First solder the RS232 female connector in a corner of your IC Board. If you don't know what are the connectors of the RS232 i uploaded an image. After you soldered the RS232 , solder all elements according to the schematic, and then cut the board. After you cut the board, secure all solderings wi th hot glue (optional). You're done!

step 5:Step five : Programming?!To program you can use Microcode Studio PICBASIC Pro.To find it search for PICBASIC on google. After you programmed and you got a HEX code , plug the programmer in the PC , and start WinPic (get it here: http://freenet-homepage.de/dl4yhf/winpic/winpicpr.zipGo to interface tab and configure i t for your programmer. Then load a HEX in the buffer go to device, config , configure your device (PIC16F84), and click "programdevice".

step 6:Step six : If you have problems...There are some problems that can appear, here is how to solve them:Error Message:Warning!Could not initialize programmer!Solution:Configure the interface again or check the circuit for soldering errors.Error Message:Programming FAILED!(but the programmer initialized succesfully)Cause:Soldering error/Too low voltageSolution:Check the circuit for soldering errors / change the port

step 7:That's allHere is where the instructable ends.I hope i helped you with the programmer.By the way , here is how mine looks like:

teh_noob says: Jul 6, 2009. 1:17 PM REPsorry for my noobishness, i now see that you plug the actual programmer in the computer.

brokenswords says: Jun 29, 2009. 3:47 AM REPthank u so much i have solution to m roblem. kee u n touch fox76rs from bit-ic, ta bilaran cit , hili ines. God bless...

Master Vizz says: Jun 25, 2009. 7:31 AM REPjust a quick question... what are the colors of the two resistors?

JZ Price says: Mar 30, 2009. 7:16 PM REPI haven't tried this yet, but i think you could mod this to be a in-curcit programmer, or just more chips. according to the 84a data sheet those pins:B7,6,5,4 aused for programming etc. and in other data sheets it says about the same for example in the the pic18f4550 (massive chip i will use for controlling a LOT leds) those same pins (pg 20 of data sheet) have similar notes next to them. b.4 SPP chip select control output b.5 Low-Voltage ICSP Programming enapin b.5 In-Circuit Debugger and ICSP programming clock pin b.7 In-Circuit Debugger and ICSP programming data pin.

vladutz2000 says: Apr 6, 2009. 4:21 AM REPvery nice idea :) .. i actually did that with a JDM programmer , for the 18F4620 ! I looked at a datasheet and made some modifications to the socket , ai successfully programmed the PIC ! :) (which i am going to use in my video game system :) ) by the way ... what programmer (software) do you use todownload the data into the PIC ?

JZ Price says: Apr 6, 2009. 1:26 PM REP

    htt ://freenet-home a e.de/dl4 hf/win ic/win ic r.zi

vladutz2000 says: Apr 6, 2009. 11:11 PM REPWinPIC does not program 18F4620's config words ... i don't know why ...well it programs the flash but it won't load the config words :S ... dunnowhy :| . Anyway , how did you connect the pins ? i bought a JDM programmer because this one was not programming more than 1 type of PIC so i tought) ... anyway that programmer works great , i picked up a random supported PIC and had a look at the pins .. and i saw some commopins ... like PGD PGC PGM /MCLR etc ... and i made an 18-to-40 pin adapter which actually worked , but not as i wanted ... in your case , whatpins are you going to use ? the ones i mentioned ? or are there more ?! or some other pins ? please tell me : )

JZ Price says: Apr 7, 2009. 8:13 AM REPi will use the pins that were already stated in a previous coment. You can find everything you need, in the data sheet.

Nunavutnewsrules says: Mar 28, 2009. 9:56 AM REPUsing the software you recomend do you program in assembly, basic or c (c++?) i would prefer not to have to learn assembl because i already see alot ofbasic and know the basic's of c (pardon the pun).

vladutz2000 says: Mar 28, 2009. 11:00 AM REPif you know C then try MikroC if you know basic then try MikroBasic or PICBASIC PRO (demo :( ) or... use Flowcode 3 for PIC .. it's a no - code programwhich is very handy , i am working on a project which has a 16F84 with a code made with flowcode : )

Asuraku says: Mar 7, 2009. 10:10 PM REPI finally got around to running this setup, works like a charm. Best part is, I think i only spent $3 dollars for all materials. Borrow and beg when you can kidsborrow and beg. I had etched a nice little dual layer board for everything, but my ferric chloride was a little old and didn't get everything evenly (missed a lobut are more in needed areas.) I'll ost links to the cb la out when I finish ever thin .

vladutz2000 says: Mar 18, 2009. 10:58 AM REPhey i'm glad you like it : ) check out my other instructables as in a couple of days i will post two more : 1 . how to make a Persistence of Vision device ahow to make text on a qwadruple 7 segment display : )

archer1232 says: Feb 18, 2009. 5:57 PM REPInstead of putting the ic socket on the board could you make wire leads to connect them to the breadboard so you can program it while its on thebreadboard.

    vladutz2000 says: Feb 22, 2009. 2:03 AM REPyea , that's a nice idea
