How to Make the Most Out of Your Recycling Efforts

Recycling is beneficial to everyone. It saves money for our country and local governments, it is good for the environment, and it keeps individual households from having a large amount of trash to dispose of each week. There is really no reason not to recycle.

It is hard to believe that some people still don’t make recycling a part of their lives, but not everyone has had an opportunity to get started in his or her community. Those who must bring their items to a recycling center may be a little nervous at first if it is something they have never done. If you think recycling is a good idea but don’t know where to start, follow these guidelines for the various items in your home that can be recycled.

First, you should find out where your local recycling center is located and its hours of operation. Next, give them a call or stop by to determine what kinds of materials they accept. Most will have a brochure or other list, and some might even have special bins available.

Once you have decided which materials to recycle, all you have to do is stop throwing them in the garbage when you are finished using them. You can designate an area in your garage or other part of your house for bins or cans to hold the items until you are ready to take them to the recycling center. For example you could label one bin for glass bottles, one for aluminum cans, and another for other types of metal including copper, stainless steel, and brass.

Pick a day to drive your items to the recycling center. Don’t worry if you are not sure exactly what to do once you arrive, because there is almost always an attendant ready to direct customers to the right area and to help unload heavy bins.

One last added benefit of recycling is that you may actually come away from the recycling center with extra money. In the state of California, you will receive five cents for each 24 ounce or smaller beverage container and 10 centers for each larger container. This money you receive per container is known as the California Redemption Value (CRV). Additionally, many recycling centers will pay for any metal items you bring along. While you may not get rich by recycling, earning a little extra money is a great incentive.

Recycling is the right thing to do for everyone. Luckily, it is a very simple procedure once you know where to go.
