In the 18th century, researchers discovered that soil is not essential for the growth of plant and the mineral nutrientsthat are present as inorganic ions in the water itself sufficient for its growth. Thus, Hydroponics which is a subset of hydro-culture is a method by which plants are grown by using the mineral nutrient solutions in water without the soil.
Hydrophonic Gardening could be organic but the use of pesticides and fungicides would take it out of the organic gardening. Though at basic level it does pass the organic test, but practically it is quite difficult. Though a hobbyistin hydroponics could grow his crop without pesticides but when there are grown in large scale it does require the pesticides.
