erronis, an Italian restaurant in downtown oronto, serves an amazing white pear pizza and I give itcredit or keeping Mimi and me talking. Mimi and I have been riends or several years and last March, our conversation swept around the act that so many o our riends were graduating rom international

development, taking internships, or volunteering on the side, and that all o them were struggling to nda way to live the liestyle that they wanted, without compromise.

No one knew the answer. We sure didnt.

We were living in the middle o it.

Te next day, I had a meeting scheduled with the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation and althoughI had a proposal ready as I walked in the door, I decided to scrap it and just ask a question. It was themost exciting question on my mind and it excited them too.

    I asked:

How can people my age, in their twenties and thirties, nd a balance between the liestyle they desire, thecareer they want and the change they want to invoke in this world? And why hasnt anyone gured thisout?

And thats what this e-book is all about. We have spent the last year answering the question and guringout exactly how people in their twenties and thirties can make money and change the world and now we

have only one purpose to share what we know with you.

Why do we want to do this?

It is simple. It is because we believe people can have it all. We believe people can change the world and webelieve they can do it without compromising their happiness, their liestyle or their passion.

    It is, simply, possible.

44% o interviewees stated that a meaningul career was one in which they elt valued by third partiesincluding amily, riends and the community. Although this was the case, it was evident that amily and

riends were more supportive o jobs that earned a higher amount o money versus those more alignedwith saving the world.

Te needs tree on the ollowing page shows the breakdown o the denition o meaningul employmentto twenty-somethings.

People in their twenties need to be taught howto access networks o inuencers instead o beingoered support to develop networks o peers. Teyalso need to be taught how to create mentors orthemselves versus being oered generic mentorship

programs. Both o these examples represent ashit in the way that programs are being deliveredto twenty-somethings presently rom providingresources to ostering resourceulness.

While participation in mentorship programs, co-op placements and internships in the social sector wereprevalent across the surveyed audience, only in 17% o cases did these experiences lead directly into acareer. Where jobs did result, success came rom the networking and events that individuals attended asa result o their position, rather than the position itsel.

Positive and supportive environments were also important in enabling individuals to overcome sel doubtand allow them to see the possibilities that may lie within embracing a non-linear career path.

    Nn-linea Caee Pah

It is easy to know the steps to take when onesets out to be a conventional lawyer. Undergraddegree + law school + bar exam = the lie o alawyer. When one sets out to be someone whomakes money and changes the world, the equation

becomes immediately more complicated and onesvision, sense o direction and lie path can easily become unclear.

Individuals who had successully ound a balance between making money and changing the world hadapproached the non-linear career path with a condence or naivet which enabled them to regard anon-linear path as stable, consistent and directed, instead o lled with risk and the unknown. Teyhad learned to trust chance meetings, right-places, new opportunities, and unexpected mentors. Tese

elements were actually very probable and were not by chance, but rather were under their control.

In act, it was only in retrospect that many o them became aware o the non-linear path they took asthe various meetings, mentors and opportunities unolded themselves in a seemingly linear ashion. For them it was a simple progression rom one step to the next. Tose who had ound a balance andsatisaction in their job all ollowed a very non-linear career path to get where they are today. Tere was

What was common among these diverse lie pathswas a set o stories that spoke to a very similarrange o tools and strategies. Tese strategies, toolsand common reactions helped individuals take

risks, have condence and envision not just theirnext potential job, but also changes in their visionsand goals.

WHy NoW?The job maret today is dramatically dierent rom that

    o twenty years ago.

According to Wilord Welch in The Tactics of Hope,

or the rst time in the last twenty years, the greeneconomy has surpassed the inormation technology

sector as the number one recipient o venture capital

dollars. This means that the next generation o

companies that are going to be thought up, built and

hiring are going to be companies grounded in the green

economy and companies that are doing good or this

    world.

    Universities, which are traditionally considered

conservative indicators o trends, echo this shit in

the economic ocus. Over the course o the last ten

years, universities have begun to oer international

development degrees on an unprecedented scale. As

well, major American institutions including New Yor

University, Yale, Wharton, Stanord and Due have

    launched Social Entrepreneurship programs.

The careers that are possible today did not exist twenty

years ago and, as a result, there is a tremendous

opportunity to nd and create careers that mae money

    and change the world.

    Caee tae-o Iin

People in their twenties want to pursue careers that are connected to their values and do good or theworld, yet they are unwilling to compromise on the amount o money they want to make.

Te people we spoke to did not want to have to work or non-prots in order to do good, but they werenot opposed to it i it led to a career outside the sector. People are aware o corporate social responsibilityand o the growth o companies that both do good and do well. Tis awareness leads to knowledge thatthey dont have to change their liestyle, or adjust their salary expectations in order to make a dierence.

Stories o internal struggle arose when individuals were told that their unwillingness to compromisewould result in disappointment. Tere was a clear understanding that it was possible to do both, thatopportunities did exist or jobs, yet when asked to articulate next steps, individuals could only list thesteps one would take or either doing good or making money and would struggle to envision what the

steps would be or a lie which includes both.

    Piin a space ta

Whether the interview took place in Edmontonat a coee shop or on a plane departing romoronto, interviewees continually expressed astrong sense and need to communicate, to shareand to tell their story.

Te process o sharing their story was, or some, the rst time that they had clearly articulated what theytruly wanted out o their career. Tere are not enough places to share the challenges and the successeso developing a career where one eels both sae and supported. Many o the people with whom those intheir twenties discussed their careers, such as teachers, amily and mentors, were not supportive or didnot have a grasp on the possibility that exists or the non-linear career.

Te process o nding a career and dealing with these issues is something that is being aced by millionso people. Tere is a tremendous sense o isolation and this is only being changed within select groupso people. By creating a more open space or these kinds o dialogues to happen, there will be anopportunity to eel supported as twenty-somethings jointly ace the challenges inherent in a non-linearcareer path.

Social Entrepreneurship is a popular term and is well publicized, yet it remains ill-dened in practice.Dierent groups, issues and demographics all interpret social entrepreneurship vastly dierently andclaim to understand the true meaning o the term.

We decided to bypass any attempt at dening the term and accept it as a continuum o dierent types o

initiatives and programs, which encompasses social enterprise, enterprising non-prots, green or-prots,individuals who are driven change-makers and all those who sel-identiy as social entrepreneurs.

Although this continuum holds endless potential, it is oten reerred to as a seemingly denitive answerto the question o how to make money and change the world. In reality the job o social entrepreneur, however dened, requires an entrepreneur. Tis is an unsurprising, but oten overlooked act, as thepeople in their twenties we spoke to were consistently provided inormation on social entrepreneurs,

who were placed on pedestals and held as proo o a concept or making money and changing the world. In reality, these stories, although inspirational, held very little resonance with the people with whom wespoke in relation to their own career paths. People simply did not all identiy as entrepreneurs.

What did resonate were the stories o the people working within these social-entrepreneur-runorganizations and companies. Tese were the stories o individuals who were working ull time to

Te total green sector, which includes everythingrom hybrid cars to solar panels, was a 230 billiondollar segment o the US economy and it iscontinually growing. Te question becomes: who will get the jobs to support this growing sector?

It became clearthat class privilege aected the way in which peopleapproached their search or a job o meaning and, more succinctly, how they approached networking. It was common or those lacking class privilegeto view networking as synonymous with workingor ree and volunteering. In contrast, those with class privilege viewed networking as an activity that

extended beyond volunteer positions and included networking events, social networks, and receptions. It was not the unawareness o networking events, social networks and receptions that was the barrieror those lacking class privilege, but there was a dominant eeling o having to prove onesel as a resulto race, class, position or a sense o non-belonging at these events. In contrast, class privilege provideda sense o condence and entitlement which enabled individuals to grow their network at a heightenedpace.

Te people with whom we spoke could neverclearly identiy a beginning to their journey. Intheir view, all o their experiences had been on anon-linear lie path and they had always been ontheir way. Realizing this when starting out is animportant step. It was important to realize that

the ideas that were being pursued had evolved as a result o both time and experience.

Understanding that past experiences, skills and chance meetings had led them to their present statecreated a sense o trust, aith and stability which stems rom the understanding that just as theseexperiences have happened in the past, they will continue to happen and they will continue to lead onetowards an end goal o a ullling career.

Starting in the middle also meant that many o the interviewees did not know exactly what they wantedto be doing in their lie when they started the six-step process. Rather than explicitly knowing, they juststarted pursuing the idea o the moment, committing themselves ully to this pursuit and subsequentlybuilding their network and their base o support or uture ideas.

It was this base o support, which grew each time they committed themselves to a new idea, that

eventually led to jobs, opportunities and being paid.

ruly committing to an idea or interest meant that one had to become their uture sel, irrespective ohow they were actually paying their bills. From the point o committing to an idea, individuals assumedthe identity o the person they wanted to become. I waiting tables was a job they were doing solely to paythe bills, then they no longer saw themselves as just a waiter, but rather as a green energy consultant or aninternational development blogger. When people asked them, How do you make money? they ocusedtheir response on the way they wanted to make money.

    For example:

Person A So what are you up to in the city?Person B I am a green energy consultant.Person A What does that entail?Person B I work with companies to ensure their ofces are green and sustainable.Person A How do you make money?Person B All sorts o dierent companies hire me to come in and consult with them or they actuallyhire me to work within their corporate social responsibility department.

As they built a strong base o support, the clarity o their vision improved and they werepresented with more opportunities to be paid or their work.

Many o the careers that people chose were not ones advertised or promoted in universities or colleges. Many o them were in emerging elds or had job titles that simply didnt exist ten years ago. As this wasthe case, it really was up to them to decide how their job looked, what it entailed and what they had tooer.

Interviewees learned to understand their value by talking to their mentors, their advisors and listening towhat people reected back to them as they built their support network.

  • 8/2/2019 How to Make Money and Change the World

    51/71

Te conversations rom which this e-book was drawn were lled with the debate about i and whencompromise was necessary in developing careers that combine social contribution, personal meaning and

nancial security. Weve been let with a resonating sense o hope, o possibility and o an understandingthat compromise is not necessary.

Tere is a comort and a condence which comes rom knowing that others have and are acing the samebarriers, having the same conversations and sharing in similar successes. It is this comort and condencethat we oer you.

    It is your turn now.

We have seen that it is possible. We have had the conversations, heard the stories and understood thechallenges that are aced when taking a dierent path. It is not always easy and it is not always clear, but Ican tell you that it is worth it.

When you ignore that eeling or desire to do good, when you put it aside or a ew months or or a ewyears, you run a great risk. You run the risk o getting comortable, o settling and o learning a way obeing that is not in line with that instinct you once hadand that is the compromise.

Beore you put this e-book down, make a decision. Regardless o how ready you eel or how clear yourdirection may be, make a decision to take the risk and live a non-linear lie.

In doing this you are joining thousands o people across this country and it is this movement that makestoday a time o possibility, a time o excitement and a time o incredible adventure or those in theirtwenties and thirties.

    It is possible.
