How to make a slideshow using iMovie 11

Students will take a series of photos, an mp3 file and import them into iMovie '11 to make a video

that is a slideshow of the photos. Learning how to manually set or turn off the Ken Burns effect,

add titles, and transitions are all techniques to make the movie enticing.

For this project, you are provide files for audio and images, courtesy of Drs. Julie Dodd and Judy

Robinson.

1. Open iMovie '11

Select File > New Project

2. Configure your project

1. Choose "No Theme".

2. Create a meaningful name for your project.

3. If you have high resolution photos and all are horizontal orientation, then choose "Widescreen

(16:9)" aspect ratio. Otherwise choose "Standard (4:3)

4. Be sure the "Automatically add" box is checked.

5. Select the default transition between slides. "Cross Dissolve" is recommended for a

professional looking slideshow.

6. Select "Create"

3. Drag the "final-crane-audio.mp3" audio file to the top right window on iMovie '11

4. Identify your folder of images and drag the images into the "project" window (top

left) of iMovie '11

5. Drag the photos to the project window

6. Put the photos in an order that would be appropriate for the audio

Note: Pressing the space bar starts and stops the playing of the audio file.

1. Select a slide that you want to move. A yellow box appears around the selected slide.

2. Move your cursor so you can see a white hand. When you have the white hand, click and drag

the slide to where you want it in your sequence.

3. The green background (in the image above) indicates the audio. Any slide that does not have

a green background will ultimately need to be deleted as it is outside of the audio playing part of

the video.

7. Adjusting elements of a slide: Clip Adjustments

1. Click on the small gear icon that appears when you have a slide selected. From here you will

be able to adjust several variables.

8. Select Clip Adjusment

1. Change how long a slide plays by changing the number of seconds a slide plays. If you want

all the slides to be the same length of time, then select, "applies to all stills."

2. Change the effect of the video by selecting an option beside "Video Effect"

9. Manually Adjust the Ken Burns Effect

To manually adjust the Ken Burns effect, you move and resize the start and end windows on your

slide. The green window (#1 above) is the start position and the red window (#2) is the end

position. The way the windows are set for this image starts with a long shot of the bird in the sky

and will zoom in to a closer shot.

3. If you do not want the Ken Burns effect and want the slide to be stationary, then select "fit"

4. When you have finished editing the effect for the specific slide, click "Done".

10. Delete extra slides not used in the show

When you have arranged the slides in the order you want, edited Ken Burns effects and other

effects in the movie (such as time) then delete any extra photos that are not in the green area. To

delete a photo, simply select it so the yellow outlines it, and press the delete button on your

keyboard.

11. Add a title to your movie

1. SElect the title icon in the middle bar at the right

2. Identify the style of title you want

3. Drag the black square indicating the title you want to the first slide in your show. The title bar

shows blue above the slide and should extend the length of the slide.

4. Type the title words on the preview image of the slide (top, right of iMovie)

12. Add closing credits

Select the style of closing credits you want and drag the style onto the final two images in your

slide show. Be sure the credit bar (dark blue above the two images) extends the length of both

images. I chose scrolling credits.

13. Writing the content of your closing credits

1. Type the content into the top right screen window (the preview window) of iMovie '11.

2. When you are finsihed, select "Done".

14. Edit the transitions between any two slides

1. To edit the transition between any two slides, select the transition icon and choose the tiny gear

icon below it. A screen will pop up and you select "transition adjustments."

15. Selecting other styles of transitions

1. You can change the duration of all transitions (if the box is selected to apply to all transitions) or

you can change just the time for one transitiion.

2. There are a variety of types of transitions. It is advisable to use the cross dissolve consistently

in a slide show.

16. When you have finished editing you slideshow, you are ready to share (or export)

it.

17. Review the options for exporting your slideshow.

1. Give your movie a meaningful title.

2. Select the size of movie depending on where you will share the movie. If, for example,you will

upload it to YouTube, select HD720p.
