A signature is sewn to bindingtape. Additional signatures areadded and sewn in turn. An endsheet of strong paper is sewn ortipped on using glue. Marbledor other decorative paper maybe laminated to the end sheet.

Sheets of paper are fold-ed with a bone folderand interleaved to makea signature.

Guided by marks on a stiff paper, an awl is used to punchholes in each signature.

The text block is compressed with a clampOpen weave cloth, called super, is laid onthe spine and a coat of neutral pH adhesiveis brushed through the super to form a flex-ible yet strong bond when dry. A decorativeheadband may be glued to the ends of thetext block.

Covers are cut fromheavy duty (.060"-.100") binder's board.The spine piece is cutfrom acid-free stock.010"-.012" thick.

Width dimensions for thecover and spine strip arecaptured from the textblock by wrapping a stripof paper around the spineand marking the spinewidth and cover size.

PREPARING THE COVER:

Covers and the spine piece are laidon book cloth and the cloth is cut3/4" larger on all sides. Neutral pHadhesive is spread on the inside sur-face of the book cloth and the threepieces are positioned, pressed toremove air and allowed to dry.

The overhanging book cloth isturned over the covers and spineand glued down with neutral pHadhesive. Corners are mitred usinga “bedsheet” tuck.

Neutral pH adhesive isapplied to the super andbinding tape to bond these tothe end sheet.

FINAL ASSEMBLY PROCESS:

The text block is placed on theinside of the cover blank. The endsheet is glued to the cover. Finally,the book is pressed or clampedbetween boards and let dry.
