• To make a flowchart on a Mac, you’ll first need to pick a diagramming program.

• Many diagramming tools are PC-only, so make sure you double check that your tool is Mac compatible.

• For the purposes of this presentation, we will use Lucidchart as our tool.

• You can register for a free Lucidchart account at www.lucidchart.com/users/registerLevel

STEP 1: Pick a tool

• Before you start actually flowcharting, think about each of the steps in your process and list them out.

• Write down every step you can think of, even if you’re not sure exactly where to place them in your process.

• For unplaced steps, ask yourself the three questions.

STEP 2: Make a list

Page 4: How to Make a Flowchart for Mac

1. What happens next in the process?

2. Does a decision need to be made before we proceed?

3.To move onto the next step, whose approval do I need?

* If you still can’t find a place for a step after asking these questions, it may not be essential.

The Three Questions

• Lucidchart has a variety of libraries with shapes for different diagrams.

• Use the “Flowchart” and “Basic Shapes” libraries for this project. They are both automatically turned on when you open up the Lucidchart editor.

• Begin your chart by dragging an elongated circle shape out onto the canvas.

• Label this shape with something like “Begin” or “Start here.”

STEP 3: Add shapes and symbols

• Continue to add shapes and draw lines to connect them by dragging your cursor.

• The 2 shapes you will most likely need:

• A rectangle shape (represents a process)

• A diamond shape (represents a decision)

• You can search Lucidchart’s flowchart glossary for other shapes you might need.

• Label each shape appropriately.

STEP 3: Add shapes and symbols

• Continue to add processes and decisions until your flowchart represents your entire process.

• End your chart with another elongated circle shape.

STEP 4: Complete your chart

• Review each step in your flowchart for clarity and conciseness.

• Have a friend or colleague review your flowchart as well—an outsider’s perspective will help you make sure the process is clear and easy to follow.
