Whether you are dealing with a home, hotel, small business, or office environment, it is likely that you have valuables in need of protection. Money, jewelry, passports and other legal documents should not be left lying around or stashed in a drawer. What better way to keep your things safe and secure than with a small safe?

It is essential that a safe be obscured from view on all sides.

Most manufacturers offer a version that is made to nestle into the 16-inch space between wall studs. They can be hidden behind pictures and mirrors, or even placed in the back of a closet or pantry.

These typically lock with both a key as well as a 3 digit combination and are fairly easy to install.

First you will need to purchase and/or gather the following materials: Safe 1/2 inch wooden shims 1 1/2 inch finishing nails tape measure Pencil drywall saw Hammer Level drill/screwdriver

The spot you choose to mount your safe should be not only hidden from plain view, but also needs to be a section of the wall which does not contain plumbing pipes or heavy electrical wiring.

Once this is confirmed, use a stud finder or hammer and nail to locate the studs.

Once you have located the studs, you need to trace the area of drywall that will be removed.

Some safes come with a template that can be taped to the wall or traced.

If not, use your level to draw a 14 1/4 inch square between the two studs.

Drive a nail into the center of the portion of drywall to be removed. This will serve as a handle to make removing the cut out piece easier.

Using your drywall saw, carefully cut out around the square.

Be sure to avoid any wiring by either rerouting it, or moving it aside and securing it.

The edges of the cutout will extend beyond the edges of the studs.

Use the wooden shims to fill in these spaces and bring the edges flush.

Secure the shims with finishing nails.

With the safe unlocked and the door open, tilt the back of the safe and insert it into the opening.

Push it flat against the back wall and make sure that it fits snugly.

Remove the shelves inside the safe to give you better access. Then using the drill, secure the safe to the studs using the screws provided.

Reinstall the shelves inside the safe if you desire.

Check to ensure that the door closes and locks properly and that the safe is firm and secure if you try to move it.

Close your closet or pantry door, or rehang any picture, mirror, or other object that serves to obscure your safe from visibility.

Your installation is now complete.
