Introduction This tutorial will guide you through the basic steps to accomplish the following tasks:

These are basic instructions that are intended to serve as a supplement to the information that is available on the SVSU Information Technology Website located at http://svsu.edu/microtech. Installing and Configuring Command Save Anti-Virus (CSAV):

1. Make certain your computer is connected the Internet. a. Through your dial-up modem b. Using your cable modem c. Wireless Networking configuration d. Campus connection T-1 line (laptops)

2. Open your Internet browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape are the most

common browsers). 3. Navigate to the SVSU Information Technology Website located at

http://svsu.edu/microtech 4. Click on the Virus Protection Link

5. You will see the page shown in the example below. Read the information regarding viruses, what to look for, how to check for updates, etc. (www.svsu.edu/microtech/virusinfo.html). This is valuable information worth reading. At the bottom of the page you will see a link to install the CSAV virus software, click on the link.

6. You will be presented with the Command Software Anti-Virus Home Installation

Instructions page. Print these instructions for future reference in step 9. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link to DOWNLOAD CSAVE NOW

7. Next you will be presented with a license agreement screen. Read the information and click the I Agree button to proceed with the installation of the software

OR Click the Installation instructions link if you need to review the installation instructions from the previous step.

8. After clicking the I agree button you will be presented with a authorization box. Type in your SVSU User-Id (the same ID you use to log into the computers on campus or to access your SVSU email) and press OK.

9. After a successful login follow the installation instructions you printed in step 6 or

refer to the on-line instructions at http://svsu.edu/microtech/csavinstall.html Other useful Virus information:

How to Maintain your Operating System: Some basic procedures can be performed regularly to help keep your computer in tip top shape. Where to begin? Start with searching the Microsoft website or Google for help in upgrading your system and to retrieve tips and tricks for using your computer. Upgrading Windows XP/Tips and Tricks:

1. Make certain your computer is connected the Internet. a. Through your dial-up modem b. Using your cable modem c. Wireless Networking configuration d. Campus connection T-1 line (laptops)

2. Open your Internet browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape are the most common

browsers). 3. In the address location type www.google.com or www.support.microsoft.com.

4. Using Google type your topic in the search box, for example: a. Windows XP tips b. Help with Windows XP c. PC Maintenance

5. Choose the site that seems to match your needs and begin gathering your information. Notice that the search for windows XP help listed the Microsoft.com website. You can click on the link to the site or you can type www.microsoft.com in the address box of your browser and eliminate searching Google. Don’t forget Google will also provide links to other sites that may provide useful information.

6. Using the www.microsoft.com website you can search for help based on subject area

OR you can perform a windows update for your computer.

7. Other ways to perform a windows update (Windows XP): a. From the Start Menu, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System

OR from the Desktop double click My Computer and click

Control Panel/ System b. Click the Automatic Updates tab and configure the settings as in the

example below.

8. Using your Internet browser you can navigate to the SVSU Tips/Tricks Website located at www.svsu.edu/microtech/pc_tips.html. This is a useful page that provides a great deal of valuable information to assist you in keeping your machine running in tip top performance. You will also find links to other pages with various software utilities to enhance your system performance.

How to locate the version of a Software Application:

1. Using Microsoft Word as an example; open the software application. 2. From the MS Word Main Menu click Help/About. 3. The version information will be displayed. Most software applications will display the version information in this manner. In some cases the software will display the version on startup. If you still can’t find the version information look for an about button on the opening screen once the software has booted up.

How to Create Spam Filters: 1. In your web browser type www.svsu.edu/microtech/spamrules.html in the

address location (refer to page 7 step 3 for details) 2. Click on the Cardmail Users link 3. Follow the instructions on the screen
