You’ve made that commitment and taken the time off work, you’ve paid up some of your hard-earned cash and you’ve sat there daydreaming about the wonderful vacation ahead of you. Now the time has come to pack your bags, breathe a sigh of relief, and let the tension drain away. You hope. There are many things which can spoil the holiday and most of them are avoidable with a little bit of forward-thinking and planning.

Without a doubt, at the top of the list is Insurance. Accidents, medical emergencies, even acts of God like hurricanes and floods can reduce the best-laid plans to waste and turn your mood from light-sky blue to raging red in a flash. You don’t drive your car without insurance, you don’t buy a house without buildings insurance, so don’t go on holiday without the same type of protection. It may be a waste of money if you never need to use it, but it could prove to be a lifesaver if you do, and what price do you put on peace of mind?

Make sure you know the place you’re going to and all the necessary details.

There’s no point going to a holiday rental home which is near the beach if its winter time and the temperatures are below zero; or going to a vacation villa near the slopes if it’s out of ski season. Also, check on any other eventualities, like perhaps an annual event which may take place in the idyllic little town your getaway rental home is in, thereby ruining the peaceful relaxation you were looking so forward to. Basically, make sure there are no surprises in store, and certainly not ones which can be checked out in a few minutes on the internet.

Also, make double sure that everyone is considered and will be catered for. If there are people with different interest and wants in your group, like a family with different aged kids, then make sure there’s something waiting for all of them. This will save a lot of arguments and prevent headaches once you get there. Then there is a list of practical things to consider. Before leaving the house, make sure everything is switched off and closed, electricity, lights, windows, side gate to the garden, anything else you can think of that may pop into your head in the middle of the night and induce paranoia before you head on your travel holiday. It might be an idea to get your spouse to double check for you, two pairs of eyes are better than one.

Before you start on your travel holiday, make sure you have exact and comprehensive directions to your vacation home, from start to finish, since you don’t want the holiday to start on the wrong footing with arguments and endless, fruitless driving around looking for your vacation rental home.

Lastly, try and take some sort of medial 1st Aid kit with you in order to deal with any minor emergencies or cuts and abrasions. You don’t want to drive around in the middle of the night looking for a hospital or pharmacy in order to plaster over a paper cut.

And then maybe, just maybe, you can have a stress-free, well-earned vacation.
