How to Give Well - Matthew 6:1-4


1. The Importance of ‘Acts of Righteousness’2 sorts of ‘righteousness’

• ‘moral’ righteousness• practical ‘acts’ of righteousness

Jesus expects his followers to be giving people. • ‘When you give to the needy’ – v2

2. Don’t give for your own gain• ‘Don’t be like the hypocrites’ - v2• ‘hypocrite’ = an actor

3. Give as secretly as possible• ‘Don’t let you left hand know what you right is doing’ – v3

Give in as understated, non self centred as possible!

4. Good givers will be rewarded! ‘You will be rewarded’ – v4


And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.’

Matthew 10:42

– So what are these rewards? • Not health or wealth• Beware of any preacher that offers these!

– The rewards God gives are more valuable than material things. • Rewards on earth - peace, comfort, satisfaction, acceptance

and reassurance from God (Beatitudes)

• Rewards he keeps for us in heaven - Matt 5:12 & 25:23

‘You have been faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things’.

Matthew 25:23

– What are these rewards? • Not health or wealth. • Beware of any preacher that offers these!

– The rewards God gives are more valuable than material things. • Rewards on earth - peace, comfort, satisfaction, acceptance and

reassurance from God (Beatitudes)• Rewards he keeps for us in heaven - Matt 5:12 & 25:23

– Don’t work for rewards – but be assured that if you give freely you will not lose out but actually gain.

– Only when you die to self and live for God and others will you get what you seek!
