BUSINESS COMMUNICATION, INFLUENCE, AND DECISION

MAKING

85% of a person’s success in business is determined by his or her ability to communicate effectively with others.

Page 3: How to give a great presentation

BY PRESENTING WELL…

You come across as credible and knowledgeable.

Your level of influence immediately increases

You can think critically, which leads to good decisions.

A LONG TIME AGO…

Finally…PowerPoint

WHAT IS POWERPOINT?

Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation program developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Office suite, and runs on Microsoft Windows and Apple's Mac OS X computer operating systems.

Page 6: How to give a great presentation

JUST TALK TO YOUR AUDIENCE

You’re not giving a presentation.

You are sharing ideas.

Have a main point or two and tell the story surrounding those points.

Page 7: How to give a great presentation

FOR EXAMPLE…

Coffee

Discovered

Types

Best

Brew

Page 8: How to give a great presentation

NOT TOO MANY WORDS…

Use words and graphics. Your presentation should be very incomplete without your narration.

Page 9: How to give a great presentation

KNOW THE SUBJECT

Practice your presentation, but also take time to know your subject.

Page 10: How to give a great presentation

QUOTES

Quoting others…makes you look smart!"Never memorize something that you can

look up."

Page 11: How to give a great presentation

CALM THOSE NERVES!

Don’t be nervous.

Having fun is contagious.

Page 12: How to give a great presentation

BE POLITE…

Be polite. Thank the audience for listening.

Page 13: How to give a great presentation

DEVELOPING THE PITCH…

Start with your main point of view.

Build a storyboard around that, one slide per thought.

Keep the number of slides down and allow a few minutes per slide.

Page 14: How to give a great presentation

THE ICEBREAKER

Start with something to break the tension: a welcome gesture, graphic or video, or some combination. Keep it relevant and appropriate. Don’t tell a joke.

Overworked Mouse!

Page 15: How to give a great presentation

THE OLD AXIOM

Old advice, but it works: First tell the audience what you’re going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them.

Page 16: How to give a great presentation

DON’T READ WHAT’S ON THE SLIDE

Know your stuff!!

Speak in your own words.

If you (rarely) want the audience to read what’s on a slide, look at it and read silently along with them.

Page 17: How to give a great presentation

ENGAGE THE AUDIENCE

Ask questions. If they don’t respond, try offering an answer and asking for a show of hands of who agrees and disagrees

? ? ?

? ? ?

Page 18: How to give a great presentation

BE ACCESSIBLE

Don’t stand behind a podium. Use a wireless mic if needed. Get close to the audience and move from place to place while maintaining eye contact, but only from time to time. Do not bounce around like a ball.

Page 19: How to give a great presentation

MAKE EYE CONTACT

But only for a few seconds per person.

Page 20: How to give a great presentation

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

Mostly the bad

and the ugly…

Page 21: How to give a great presentation

THIS IS AN EXAMPLEOf a very poor slide choice

Page 22: How to give a great presentation

THIS IS AN EXAMPLEOF A BETTER SLIDE CHOICE

1 NICKEL = ? 1 nickel = 5 pennies

We learned yesterday that a penny is equal to $0.01.

Here is how we would count this.

=

•The title is weak•The bullets drift too far up•Penny has a watermark•Too much animation•You can see the white edges on the coin pictures•Disproportionate coin sizes
