How to get a Birth Certificate?
One of the most important documents that you’ll receive in your lifetime is your birth certificate. Having
your birth certificate can come in handy when you’re trying to prove your identity when applying for a social
security number, for travel or immigration. The United States federal government doesn’t provide copies of
a birth certificate, so you’ll have to apply directly to the state in which you were born.
When ordering, be aware that shortened (abstract) versions of birth certificates offered by some states may
not be acceptable for US passport purposes. Be sure to order only the full, certified copy of the original birth
certificate bearing the register’s raised embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar’s signature, and
the date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office.
The cost varies by state but is typically between $10 - $30. The cost in Kentucky is $10 and in Ohio it is
$21.50 if you have it mailed; $22 if you go to the following address to obtain the birth certificate .
