The United States federal government doesn’t provide copies of a birth certificate, so you’ll have to apply directly to the state in which you were born. When ordering, be aware that shortened (abstract) versions of birth certificates offered by some states may not be acceptable for US passport purposes. Be sure to order only the full, certified copy of the original birth certificate bearing the register’s raised embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar’s signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office. The cost varies by state but is typically between $10 - $30. How to get a Birth Certificate?

One of the most important documents that you’ll receive in your lifetime is your birth certificate. Having

your birth certificate can come in handy when you’re trying to prove your identity when applying for a social

security number, for travel or immigration. The United States federal government doesn’t provide copies of

a birth certificate, so you’ll have to apply directly to the state in which you were born.

When ordering, be aware that shortened (abstract) versions of birth certificates offered by some states may

not be acceptable for US passport purposes. Be sure to order only the full, certified copy of the original birth

certificate bearing the register’s raised embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar’s signature, and

the date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office.

How to Apply for a Kentucky Identification Card

1. Locate the Circuit Court Clerk's office nearest to you, as you will have to apply for the

ID card in person. You cannot apply online.

2. Bring proper identification (birth certificate).

3. You must also provide proof of your social security number (SSN). If you have never

been issued a SSN, you may be required to obtain one.

4. Provide proof of Kentucky residencey.

5. Pay the ID card application fee, currently $12, by cash or check.

6. The Circuit Clerk's Office also provides a Child ID Card for those under the age of 15.

The required documents are the same as the ones to be produced for obtaining a

Kentucky ID Card. The fee for the Child ID is $ 4.

7. A Non-US Citizen can apply for an ID card at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's

Division of Motor Licensing's Field Office and the ID card shall be issued by the local

Circuit Clerk's Office.

Renewing a Kentucky ID Card

1. Locate the Circuit Clerk's Office nearest you, as you will have to apply for the ID card

renewal in person within 31 days of expiry. You cannot apply online.

2. Bring proper identification (birth certificate).

3. You must also provide proof of your social security number (SSN). If you have never

been issued a SSN, you may be required to obtain one.

4. Provide proof of Kentucky residencey.

5. Bring along the expired ID.

6. Pay the ID card renewal fee, currently $15, by cash or check. For renewal of Child ID,

the fee is $ 4.

Replacing a Lost, Stolen, or Destroyed ID Card

You may be issued a replacement identification card if your original ID card has been lost,

stolen or destroyed, or if you have had a name or address change.

1. Locate the Circuit Clerk's Office nearest to you, as you will have to apply for the ID

card in person. You cannot apply online.

2. Bring proper identification (birth certificate).

3. You must also provide proof of your social security number (SSN). If you have never

been issued a SSN, you may be required to obtain one.

4. Provide proof of Kentucky residencey in the event that it has changed.

5. If your name has changed, you must provide proof of name change within 10 days of

the change to the local Circuit Clerk's Office.
