The Summer Dreamers Academy is the summer fun your child wants—and the summer learning your child needs. All campers
will work on the reading, writing and math skills that will help them succeed in school next fall. But it’s not school as usual! Your
child will participate in fun and interesting academic classes and take part in exciting enrichment activities of his/her choice.
In the past, campers had a ball fencing, biking, painting and much more!
There is no cost to attend the Summer Dreamers Academy. Transportation is provided for campers living more than 1.5
miles from their assigned site, and all campers will receive breakfast, lunch, and a snack. Pittsburgh Public Schools staff run
each Summer Dreamers camp site, and a nurse will be present to help keep campers safe!

(except July 4) from 8:30am to 4:00pm.

2013 Summer Dreamers Academy – Important Information for ParentsThe 2013 Summer Dreamers Academy is a great way to keep your child’s mind and body active this summer−all students currently enrolled in grades K−8 are encouraged to sign up. Your child will get ready for the next school year. Teachers
will sharpen your child’s math, reading and writing skills and make sure they don’t forget what they learned during the school year.
Research shows that over the summer children can lose, on average, one month of what they learned in school. This can add up
over the years, and cause some children to fall behind. For that reason, students with the greatest need for academic support
over the summer have the greatest chance of being accepted into the program.
Preference will be given in the following way:1st Preference: Students who scored basic or below basic on their 2012 PSSA (students in grades 4–8) or
2013 Winter DIBELS (students in grades K–2) AND qualify for free or reduced price meals.
2nd Preference: Students who scored basic or below basic on their 2012 PSSA (students in grades 4–8) or
2013 Winter DIBELS (students in grades K–2) OR qualify for free or reduced price meals.
3rd Preference: Students who scored proficient or advanced on their 2012 PSSA (students in grades 4–8) or
2013 Winter DIBELS (students in grades K–2) AND do not qualify for free or reduced price meals.
Parents, do not submit PSSA or DIBELS data. Summer Dreamers Academy staff members will obtain your child’s information
from the school. Sibling preference will also apply. If a child is accepted to Summer Dreamers based on the preferences above,
his/her siblings will also be accepted to the program. Siblings must reside in the same household. To enroll in the 2013 Summer
Dreamers Academy, you must complete and return this enrollment form by May 3rd.
Attendance PolicyIn order to get the most fun and learning out of Summer Dreamers, campers must come to camp every day! We expect every camper to attend all 27 days of the program. If you already know that your child will miss multiple days of camp, please do not register. Regular attendance is important in order for your child to get the most fun and
learning out of the program.
NO LATE REGISTRATION FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Pittsburgh’s History MakersFacilitated by Senator John Heinz History Center
You live in one of America’s most important cities. Over
the last 300 years, there have been war battles in Pittsburgh,
the Big Mac was invented here, and so were the Jeep and
lifesaving machines. History makers in Pittsburgh have made
life different for so many people. As one of Pittsburgh’s History
Makers, you’ll spend the summer stepping back through time
at the Heinz History Center, learning how Pittsburgh was
involved in the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, inventing,
and sports. You’ll participate in exciting hands-on activities
and crafts, talk with visitors from the past, and discover how
people have lived in this region for hundreds of years. Journey
throughout the past and learn how you can help shape the
region’s future as a History Maker!
