We know there's an abundance of traffic out there to be had, but trying to divert it in the right direction can often feel like a frustrating and fruitless exercise.

In fact, there are no magic tricks or secret formulas for attracting traffic to one of your offers: all you need is some common sense and enough time and effort to get the results you're after.

Step 1: Create Great Offers!

1. Create great offersIt sounds obvious, but your offer isn't going to gain any traction if it isn't any good.

You could retweet details of a giveaway a thousand times, but if it's for something that nobody wants you'll be met with silence and indifference from your potential customers.

Consider what your company can offer that's of real worth. What product, service or deal is going to get people's attention and encourage them to get involved?

If you incorporate some kind of sharing mechanism — such as retweet or share on Facebook to enter — and the offer is a good one, traffic generation takes care of itself

Step 2: Use Social Media

2. Use social mediaYour offer can't attract attention if no one hears about it. Use your startup's Twitter and Facebook presence to encourage people to check out your deal, and have staff members, friends and family share the offer as well.

If you have a newsletter, include the offer here, and mention it prominently on your website's landing page too if appropriate.

Reach out to influential customers or industry experts with large social media followings to see if they would be interested in taking part in or promoting the deal that you're working on.

Utilising press contacts is another worthwhile idea: even if you don't get any specific coverage, it still helps in getting the word out online.

Step 3: Paid for Advertising

3. Pay for advertisingWhether it's through Adsense, Facebook or Twitter, advertising campaigns can be carefully targeted at specific demographics, and including details of an offer makes it even more likely that users are going to click through.

Make sure the details of the offer are clearly laid out, and that the entry requirements are low — the more hoops there are to jump through, the more likely people are to turn away.

Existing customers are the ones most likely to take advantage of your new offers, so you may want to target them with advertising within an app or email.

Give them something extra that new customers can't access, and you increase the probability that they will sign up for the deal and go on to promote it to friends and family. You could even use a referrals system to increase the rewards on offer.

Other Techniques

There are various other techniques to consider as well: you could write a new blog post explaining and promoting the offer perhaps, and then spread that post far and wide on your social media networks. You could include a link to the offer on your email signature for a while, for example, or use a new splash page on your company's website. At the core of the issue though, is the strength of your original offer: focus on this first and foremost.
