How to disassemble Dell Inspiron

1420 or Vostro 1400

In this guide I explain how to disassemble a Dell Inspiron 1420 or Dell Vostro1400 laptop.

I will completely disassemble it and show how to remove the motherboard.

Dell Inspiron 1420 is very similar to Dell Vostro 1400. If there are anydifferences they should be very minor.

!efore you start ma"e sure the laptop is turned off and battery removed.

STEP 1.

#oosen eight screws securing the hard drive memory and heat sin" covers.

$emove all three covers.

STEP 2.

#ift up the hard drive assembly by the blac" tab to disconnect it from the

motherboard.

$emove the hard drive assembly.

STEP 3.

%he hard drive connected to the laptop motherboard via connector.

Dell Inspiron 1420&Vostro 1400 uses a regular 2.'( )*%* hard drive.

STEP 4.

!oth memory modules can be accessed on the bottom.

$emove both memory modules.

Dell Inspiron 1420&Vostro 1400 can handle up to 4+! $*,. -ou can install

up to 2+! $*, module into each slot.

-ou should use /2'00 DD$2 or faster DD$2 memory modules.

STEP 5.

$emove one screw securing the DVD drive.

ull the DVD drive to the left and remove it.

STEP 6.

#oosen four screws securing the / heat sin".

STEP .

/arefully lift up the heat sin" and remove it from the motherboard. If the heat

sin" is clogged with dust you can clean it with compressed air.

!"TE# before installing the heat sin" bac" on the motherboard don3t forget to

apply new thermal grease on the /.

*fter the heat sin" is removed you can access and remove the /

processor5.

/arefully lift up the right side of the "eyboard cover with a screwdriver.

/ontinue removing the "eyboard cover with your fingers.

STEP ,.

$emove two screws securing the "eyboard.

STEP 10.

#ift up the "eyboard so you can access the cable connector underneath.

-ou can remove the "eyboard only after the connector is unloc"ed and cable

released.

STEP 11.

In order to unloc" the connector lift up the right side of the blue loc"ing tab at

a 70 degree angle.

STEP 12.

8n the following picture the "eyboard connector shown in the unloc"ed

 position.

 9ow you can pull the cable from the connector.

#ift up and remove both hinge covers.

STEP 1.

#ift up and unplug the video cable connector from the motherboard.

$emove one screw securing the :button board and remove the board.

-ou do not remove the board completely you 6ust put it aside so you can

remove the wireless card antenna cables.

STEP 1,.

Disconnect both wireless card antenna cables from the wireless card.

 9ow you can remove one screw securing the wireless card and pull it from the

slot optional step5.

#ift up and remove the display assembly.

It3s a different model but #/D screen removal steps should be very similar.

In order to remove the motherboard you3ll have to remove the modem card

first.

$emove one screw securing the modem card disconnect modem cable from

the left side and remove the modem.

!y the way the /,8) battery is hidden under the modem.

STEP 26.

$emove three screws securing the motherboard.

Disconnect three cables.

%here is one more cable on the bottom which has to be disconnected.

$emove the motherboard.

fan.

)imply remove two screws securing the fan disconnect the cable and remove

the fan.
