Anxiety is described as a psychological and physiological state wherein a person feels uneasiness, worry, and
fear. Although it’s associated with negative feelings it’s actually a natural response to stress which helps the
person cope with the situation. As normal individuals, we are not strangers to anxiety and we experience it in
situations such as a job interview, an exam, a confrontation with another individual, or a specific fear towards
something or someone. But when anxiety becomes excessive, it can lead to anxiety disorder or even phobia. So
if you want to manage these negative feelings, read the suggested tips below on how to deal with anxiety.
Take your vitamins. It was observed that people who are deficient in vitamins and minerals such as
vitamin B, potassium and magnesium, easily get anxious and suffer from its symptoms. Make sure
that you get sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals through supplements on top of your regular
diet.
Let go of caffeine. Caffeine found in coffee, energy drinks and most sodas can actually increases your
anxiety levels which results to palpitations and cold sweats. On top of that, caffeine also decreases
your ability to sleep and relax which something your body needs when recovering from anxiety.
Meditate. I have mentioned meditation a lot of times in this blog and I couldn’t emphasize more the
benefits of having a calm mind. Whenever you feel anxious try to find a quiet spot and meditate.
Focus on calming your thoughts and relaxing your body to get rid of the feelings of anxiety. Also,
include meditation as part of your daily routine to help you manage anxiety in the future.
Build your confidence. People get easily anxious when they’re not confident about themselves and
when they’re not sure on how to deal with certain situations. Building your confidence helps you
believe in your abilities and strengths. If you know for yourself that you can handle certain problems
and difficult situations, what’s there to be anxious about?
Talk about it. Normally we isolate ourselves from other people whenever we feel anxious about
something. We get immersed in our own thoughts and the next we know we are more anxious than
before. Talking to other family and close friends about your problems help reduce the effects of
anxiety. The feeling of having people around you for support actually calms the mind and relaxes the
body.
Stay active. Whenever we feel anxious, our body releases adrenaline and prepares for “fight or
flight.” It prepares for action so it can defend itself from threats. But if your situation isn’t life
threatening then you can just do something to shake it off. Try to stay active by doing quick exercises
such as running or doing pushups. That kind of physical activity can replace your negative feelings
with positive ones.
The mind is like a double edge sword. It is powerful enough to hurt you and wear you down but it can also
protect you and make you stronger. By knowing how to manage negative emotions such as anxiety you are
actually helping your mind become tougher and stronger.
“Anxiety is fear of one’s self.”
