Ways to Use Your Sources Review

There are 3 major ways you can present

information from a source in your paper:

    Direct quotation Summary

    Paraphrase

Make sure your evidence supports your

    thesis.

    For example

    My thesis is:

The Japanese military were excessivelybrutal to their prisoners of war during

    World War II.

    Direct Quotation

A direct quote is a string of words taken from the

text EXACTLY how it is written.

The Japanese therefore treated enemy POWs asdisgraced nonpersons, who in surrendering had

dishonored themselves and forfeited their rights to

    humane treatment (Astore 152).

We do this if we like the way the author put

something and do not want to change his or her

    words.

    Summary

Sometimes, your source will go into a lot of detail on a

topic, but you just need to give a general idea.

Here is my summary of the same quote:

The Japanese believe that surrendering during a war

is completely disgraceful. Due to this believe, POWs

they captured were treated very badly. POWs faced in

humane treatment at the hands of the Japanesemilitary (Astore 152).

    Paraphrase

Sometimes, you want to say BASICALLY the samething as an author, but you want to say it differently, inyour own words. This is called paraphrasing.

From source: Lacking medical care and fed

a meager diet, POWs often succumbedto beriberi, cholera, dysentery, malaria, ormalnutrition. Others were tortured todeath or killed in work-related accidents.

From students paper: POWs were not given medicineor medical treatment and were fed badly. Some weretortued and died. Others died at work.

Some soldiers were tortured and died that way. Stillothers died because of work (Astore 152).
