How to choose relevant family template for developing a family? As we all know that family templates are quintessential for Revit users when they develop families in Revit family editor, but the fact remains that the template chosen by the users must be relevant to the family they are developing at that moment. That means it is necessary for users to understand the relevance of a family template in context of family creation.

Family templates can be regarded as building blocks as they include sufficient information in them that is necessary for Revit users for starting a family. Families are largely used by Revit users when they execute Revit modeling services for developing effective models.

Technique of selecting correct family template for a family

• Family templates are generally named on the basis of element developed by using them. • For example if users want to develop a family that will be hosted in a wall such as

window, they need to choose wall-based family template as it can provide humongous information to users.

• If in case users want to develop a door family they can again use wall-based family template, as door is also hosted by a wall. In short wall-based family template is known as host based template as it help users with information required to develop a component that is hosted by it.

• Similarly for developing a light fixture family which will be hosted on a ceiling, Revit users can select ceiling-based templates. For developing a sprinkler, which is nothing but an automatic fire extinguisher that is generally installed in ceilings Revit users can again make use of ceiling-based template.

• Similarly when users want to develop components that will be hosted by floor, such as heating resisters, they must use floor-based templates.

• On the other hand when standalone components are developed by users which do not depend on a host, users are required to make use of standalone template for developing them. These components can be inserted anywhere in the model by users such as furniture and appliances etc.
