•As the former Team Leader of my local law enforcement agency’s Marine Operations (dive and boat) division, I underwent formal training to qualify for this position.

After earning my basic diver certification, I was trained in advanced open water skills, rescue diver techniques, and underwater explosive recognition.

•Being a rescue diver involves full knowledge of underwater conditions and the ability to recognize an incident and provide treatment for an injured diver.

First, several organizations provide a diver with rescue diving certification, like PADI, NAUI, SSI, and SDI.

•Most require an individual to be at least 15 years of age before enrolling in the rescue course, while PADI accepts junior rescue divers at the age of 12.

Additional prerequisites are advanced open water certification, CPR, and First Aid certification.

•While the cost of the PADI course covers all instruction and entitles students to half off the price of rentals, those who participate in this class must provide their own gear and bring all necessary training items (rescue diver crew pack, rescue diver video, etc.).

Once registered for the rescue diver course, students learn how to avoid, prevent, and handle underwater emergencies.

•The mission of this course is to train divers to prevent accidents and to understand proper rescue methods in the event of an emergency.

Some examples of crises that students learn how to control in a basic rescue diver course include experience with tired and panicked divers, unresponsive or distressed divers at and under the surface, missing divers, and first aid and oxygen administration for diving-related injuries.

•Becoming a certified rescue diver makes one more comfortable, having trained in prevention and response techniques in disaster situations. I view this form of training as one of the most important modes of diving instruction.
