Jobs of the Nervous System• This system includes your brain, spinal cord

and the nerves throughout your body– Also includes sense organs like eyes and ears.

1. Receiving Information2. Responding to

Information

3. Maintaining Homeostasis

• What is a Stimulus? A Response?

• Stimulus: a change in environment

• Response: reaction to a stimulus

• Homeostasis: stability of an organism’s internal environment.

Jobs of the Nervous System• Your nervous system operates in 3 different ways:

Page 4: How the Nervous System Works

Neurons• Neurons are cells that

carry information through your nervous system

• The information neurons carry are called nerve Impulses– Impulses travel up to 120

meters per second.

Page 5: How the Nervous System Works

Neurons Structure

• The impulse is then sent away from the Neuron through an Axon (like arteries).

• Neurons have a nucleus inside a Cell Body• Impulses come to the Cell Body from Dendrites

Page 6: How the Nervous System Works

Motor Neuron

• Sends impulses to muscles, resulting in movement

Interneuron

• Carries impulses from one neuron to the next

Sensory Neuron

• Detects stimuli

• Converts stimuli into impulses
