Put In The WorkNo Excuses

To play baseball in college, you must be willing to go the extra mile and sacrifice things. Baseball is not an easy game and to get to the next level you must get better everyday. Prove that you want it more than anybody else by lifting before school, staying late after practice, eating healthy and becoming a leader. Understand that nothing is given to you in baseball. If you want to succeed you have to put in the work and fight. Coaches want a player who will battle for them. Someone who will never give up an at-bat or jog to first base. Listen to legendary runner Steve Prefontaine, “If someone is going to beat you, they’re gonna have to bleed to do it.”

Have a Plan at the PlateHaving a Plan

One of the biggest differences between successful and unsuccessful baseball players is their mind. Without applying our mind to hitting, we essentially are flipping a coin whether or not we will be successful at the plateIn order to have a plan you need to study the game, but most importantly the pitchers. As Steve Springer says, “If you’re hitting 7th, you should have six mental at-bats before you even step into the box.”Whatever your plan may be is up to you, but it is essential that you at least have a plan and stick with it. Gather as much information as possible and your plan will be that much stronger. Looking for a certain pitch rather than trying to react will convert into consistency and success.

Be ProactiveShow Coaches Who You Are

You need to utilize the tools recruitHSathletes.com offers you and promote yourself to college coaches. There are too many high school baseball players and too few collegiate baseball coaches to see your every at-bat. Coaches will take the time to click a link and visit a web page that is professionally laid out and has all the information visible and formatted in a way that they expect. Do your research, find the right school for you and include all aspects when choosing potential schools. When a coach responds back, either positive or negative, always respond back promptly and thank him for his time, be appreciative. Act as if you are writing an essay to a teacher when connecting with coaches. Use proper grammar, spell check etc. This is where you have another opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Market yourself to the best of your ability!

Create a Highlight VideoHighlight Video

A baseball recruiting video is one of the most influential aspects of the recruiting process. It can take you from an unknown player to a highly recruited one. A video will help you proactively target and communicate with collegiate baseball coaches that you would like to play for them at the next level. Out of 130,000 HS seniors, 5% will play collegiate baseball. A video will increase the probability of being recruited as your skills can be evaluated without a coach ever having to travel to see you play live-you get to coaches that would otherwise not have seen you!The key to being recruited is to be seen while demonstrating great technique, attitude, athleticism, coach-ability and passion.

Achieve Academic SuccessAcademics

If a collegiate baseball coach becomes interested in you as a player, the first question he will ask is, “What are his/her grades like?” If they are low he will move on and continue his search for another player. You need to separate yourself from the crowd and your GPA is an excellent way to do so. There are thousands of players so similar in skill level that you need to gain an advantage over them. If a coach is recruiting two players who match up evenly on paper, he will always take the one with the better grades. Having good grades, does not just show a coach that you are smart, but it also proves that you are dedicated, motivated and have great a work ethic. These are traits every coach wants on their team. Coaches have much more lead way in scholarship money when a player performs highly in academics. Usually, the better your grades, the better your scholarship packet.

Be Cautious When Using Social MediaSocial Media

Technology has become a huge part of the World today, but can be beneficial or devastating depending on how it is used.High School athletes must be aware that social media is visible to the general public and anyone has access to your tweets and posts. We must make sure we conduct ourselves in a professional manner and are not posting picture of us partying or goofing off. When a collegiate baseball coach is thinking about bringing you onto his team and investing time/energy and putting himself on the line, don’t be surprised when he visits your Facebook and Twitter page. Character is a major aspect of recruiting a high school baseball player and if a collegiate coach gets the wrong vibe, he won’t think twice about moving on. Pretend that every time you are on social media somebody who determines your college and athletic future is watching. Think twice about what you post.
