What is College Experience?

College Experience is an opportunity for juniors and seniors to earn dual (high school and college) credit.

Students enroll in approved College Experience classes through their high school CDC.

Classes are through CPCC (Central Piedmont Community College). CPCC has six campuses.

Who may participate?

You must be: A rising junior or senior On track for graduation Age 16 by August 15, 2011Students may opt to have early release from their high

school day or they may choose to take college classes in addition to having a full load at the high school.

Butler early-release students must leave campus during fourth period and sign out through the Career Center.

Students may take as many as two CE classes each semester.

What classes may be taken?

Both of these types of classes may be taken: College Experience - Huskins

May be face-to-face classes or online Tuition fees are waived. You receive a $50 Visa card toward the cost of the books.

Books may cost between $25 and $400 per class. College Experience - Learn and Earn (LEO)

All online classes Tuition fees are waived. All required books are free.

All students are responsible for supplemental or recommended textbooks, supplies, and any insurance fees ($1.50).

Academic Information

Dual Credit – CPCC and Butler High School Some classes have honors credit Policy - Syllabi – Grading – Drop Dates Students receive the instructor’s grade on their Butler

report card at the end of the semester. No grade is given at the quarter.

Students should contact their CPCC instructor directly with concerns about grades, testing, and course requirements. Mom, Dad, and Mrs. King have no legal rights to do this for you.

Expectations

College Experience students are college students attending CPCC and are treated as such. Students must follow the CPCC Code of Conduct and Integrity Policy.

As a CPCC student, students will follow the CPCC calendar: exam schedules, breaks, and holidays differ from CMS.

GO TO CLASS! There is no recovery at CPCC. Each instructor can have a different attendance policy: know what is expected be present be on time

This contract reviews CMS procedures as well as CPCC procedures and must be signed by both parent and student.

Don’t forget to list your transportation plans for leaving school (if applicable) and/or getting to your CPCC class.

Return the completed form to Mrs. Dianne King.

Without this signed form, your class information will not be submitted to CPCC.

Apply online to CPCC

Apply online for admission to CPCC at http://www1.cpcc.edu/admissions/.

You must use your social security number or your application will be lost in cyberspace. You will also need an email address. Follow the directions on how to apply to CPCC included in your handouts. Make sure that you select “college credit courses for self improvement or personal interest” whenwhen you get to the you get to the Program of Study sectionProgram of Study section..

Set up your CPCC Login account

After you have completed the application process, you will receive your CPCC ID number via email.

From the CPCC homepage, click on CPCC Login, formerly known as the SNAP account, and follow the directions.

You will be given a user name and you will create your password. Write this information on your student information sheet and keep it in a secure place.

How to look up classes online

Your folder contains the classes that are available to you.

However, you need to look at the date and time you would like for this semester.

Go to http://www.cpcc.edu to see the schedule.

Select the current term, click continue, select the campus you want to attend, select the approved College Experience course you want to take and search for available sections.

Drop/Add/Withdrawal Form

Do not register for classes on line. Choose two or three classes…a first choice and a

couple of alternatives. Print these and highlight the sections you would like.

List them in order of preference if more than one section is available.

After receiving your CPCC ID#, finish the form titled Drop/Add.

Be sure to complete the top portion and have your parent sign the bottom.

Return this form to me and I will send the information to CPCC to register you for the class(es) you have chosen.

We have a quick turn-around – don’t waste time getting your paper work completed.

Course requests will be submitted as I receive them with all paper work due no later than Tuesday, April 26.

CPCC will begin to register you immediately.

Check to see if you are in…

Beginning May 10, start checking to see if you got the class you wanted by logging in to MyCollege.

Go to Students, My Class Schedule Select the appropriate term, and you should

have a class. Print a copy of your confirmed schedule and

bring it to me. Your Butler schedule cannot be changed until I have this copy.

Before attending CPCC in the fall, go to any campus to have your ID made and to get your parking pass.

There is no cost to you if you identify yourself as a College Experience student.

Your passes work at all campuses.

Buying Textbooks

You will need to go to the CPCC bookstore. If you are taking an online class identified as

NC Learn and Earn, your required textbooks are free. Identify yourself as a College Experience/Learn and Earn student at the bookstore.

Otherwise, you will receive a $50 debit card for each class you are taking to help with costs.

Summer Checklist

Be sure to check your email on a regular basis. This is the way we will communicate during the summer.

Check your My College account ten days prior to class beginning to make sure it hasn’t been cancelled.

Notify Mrs. King immediately if your class has been cancelled to get into another one.
