Page 2: How Accountability Operates Between Managers and Subordinates

There is always a significant relationship existing between superiors and

subordinates. Through the course of work there were always a shared responsibility and

division of labor, hence accountability exist. Accountability happens when someone is

in charge for a project or task. He is already obliged to be liable for anything that might

happen through the course of his action.

The manager must clearly state the task, terms and conditions of the work to his

subordinates. Have the subordinates understand their accountability to update the

manager regarding the progress of their task. The accountabilities and authorities of a

manager must be clear and understood by his subordinates in order for the work

outputs to be completed satisfactorily.

As the manager, he has the control of the merit and demerit system in the

workplace. He has the authority to award or reprimand subordinates depending on the

performance they exemplified because the manager is not only accountable for his own

output but also for the outputs of his immediate subordinates. It means that if he slipped

and did not oversee the failure of his member, then it will be his failure too.

In case that a manager is not available for some reasons, he can hold an

immediate manager to do the supervision on the output of the task given. The manager

is accountable for the performance of this immediate manager. The immediate manager

is responsible for the output produce by his subordinates. As subordinates, they must

do their task to the best of what they can to prove that they are worthy of the trust given

by their superiors.

Accountability between managers, immediate managers and subordinates best

operates through good communication and cooperation. Managers must trust their

subordinates and in return the later must be responsible enough to do what is assigned

to them.
