Since the wild res of 2009 and 2010, the Douglas- r beetle has been hard at work killing trees in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, according to Cariboo Region forest entomologist Jodi
Axelson.“The ecology of
this beetle is that res will re-up the population,” Axelson said. “A lot of that increase is now quite visible. When you look around the valley, down the Highway 97 corridor, or on the golf course you will see a lot of red trees.”
When large wild res occur, often a number of trees on the outskirts of the burnt area are damaged, scarred and weakened.
“Those are exactly the kind of trees, when the populations are low, that the beetles will go to,” Axelson said. “If you get enough of these damaged trees on
the landscape, over a number of years you’ll see the population build because there’s so much available host to them.”
Axelson said signs of infested trees can be discoloured foliage, with needles turning yellow, bright pink-red and then a dark rust.
“A Douglas- r tree
that is experiencing a current attack may maintain a green, healthy-looking crown for many months, but it’s important to understand that live beetles emerge the following year and infest nearby trees.”
If people see a pale green, yellow, red, brown or grey
Douglas- r tree on or near their property, they are asked to check the surrounding trees to determine if they have also been infested with Douglas- r beetles.
To raise public awareness about the Douglas- r beetle, Axelson has created a four-page brochure
for landowners to help mitigate the beetle’s spread.
It was made available Friday on the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations website and can be printed at home, or picked up at the ministry’s of ces.
New sawmill on the horizon
Home owners urged to deal with beetle-infected trees

The Cheslatta Carrier Nation, locat-ed on the south shore of Francois Lake, has issued a request for proposal to interested parties for the con-struction and opera-tion of a sawmill in the Burns Lake area.
Mike Robertson, Cheslatta Carrier Nation’s senior advisor, said Cheslatta “are looking at some options” for their industrial site at Ootsa Lake (the old Cheslatta Forest Products site).
The request for proposal states that “Cheslatta are seeking an experienced partner who will bring sawmill construction and operational expertise, product marketing excellence, and additional capital.”
The request also states that Cheslatta Carrier Nation have “signi cant sustainable green timber holdings,
previous sawmilling experience and capital including nancial and other assets such as industrial lands.”
Robertson chose not to give any details about the project before the new year.
“We don’t have anything rm yet,” said Robertson. “I can say that it won’t be a primary sawmill.”

forTodayHOPEBorn a King
Isn’t it interesting that Jesus was born a King. We read in the Gospel of Matthew that the wise men announced to King Herod that a king was born in Bethlehem. Hosts of angels announced his birth and shepherds went to see him in the stable (Luke 2:8-20). When the shepherds and wise men saw him they bowed down and worshipped him (Matthew 2:11).
All this celebration happened on earth and also in heaven because Jesus was the eternal Son of God from eternity past and came into this world as a human being through birth of the virgin, Mary. God’s prophets had foretold this event some 700 years previously. He came to be a part of his creation that had rebelled against him so there would be hope for those who had no hope.
In the book of Revelation Jesus is called the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords. In the Gospel of John he is proclaimed as being God in human esh and Creator of everything that has been made.
Today God is calling on all people great and small to worship him. We can either bow our knee now in worship and surrender to him or we will be compelled to bow the knee at the judgement.
What will we do with this King of kings named Jesus Christ? Let us be wise as the wise men were to bow down in worship.
“Though he was God, he did not think equality with God as something to cling to…. and was born as a human being… that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:6;7b;10,11

“I hoped to give people some guidance on how to deal with it in their own lives and on their own property,” Axelson said.
While the best thing to do is cut the trees down and ideally remove them from the site, if people want to use the wood for firewood, they need to remove the bark.
“If you were to cut up the wood and stack it, those beetles are highly likely to still survive,” she warned.
The Douglas-fir beetle is very small, similar to the mountain pine beetle,
and thousands can live on one tree. And those thousands of beetles are also doing the same thing the mountain pine beetle was doing to pine.
They bore underneath the bark, mine the cambium and lay all their eggs. The eggs hatch into pupa that eat their way into the tree.
“The really large Douglas Fir that are most susceptible to the Douglas-Fir Beetle are really lovely trees to have on our property, in our parks and around us,” she said. “It’s sad to see those trees go.”

The Wet’suwet’en First Nation signed an agreement with the province for the proposed Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline project.
The Wet’suwet’en First Nation, that has approximately 240 members, will receive approximately $2.8 million from the province at three different stages in the CGL project: $464,000 upon signing the agreement, $1.16 million when pipeline construction begins, and $1.16 million when the pipeline is in service. The Wet’suwet’en First Nation will also receive a yet-to-be-determined share of $10 million a year in ongoing benefits per pipeline.
Chief Karen Ogen said pipeline benefits agreements are “just one vehicle driving Wet’suwet’en’s participation in LNG development.”
“While these agreements ensure First Nation communities share in the economic benefits of LNG, we are working collaboratively with the province and other First Nations to ensure environmental priorities are addressed as well,” she said.
In the story ‘Early pipeline warnings’ published in the Lakes District News’ Feb. 20, 2013, Chief Karen Ogen articulated
her concerns for the pipeline project which was then in its preliminary stage of its provincial e n v i r o n m e n t a l assessment (EA).
“Before we can consent to anything,” Ogen said in January 2013, “we need all the information on our end. All the way through the process of the EA, consultation should be happening, not just a one-time meeting and that’s it.”
Ogen insisted back then that the “processes and protocols” of her people needed to be followed, and not just the mandate established by the e n v i r o n m e n t a l assessment office.
“Band leaders are the spokespeople for our people,” Ogen said in 2013. “But we still go back to the community for major decisions.”
The province issued an environmental as-sessment certificate for the proposed Coastal GasLink project this fall. In addition to meeting conditions set out in the envi-ronmental assessment certificate, the project will now require vari-ous federal, provincial and local government permits to proceed.
Pipeline benefits agreements with First Nations are part of the B.C. government’s comprehensive plan to partner with First Nations on LNG op-portunities.
“Provincial benefit-sharing offers First
Nations resources to partner in economic development, comple-ments industry impact benefit agreements that provide jobs and business opportuni-ties, and is a way for government and First Nations to work to-gether to help grow the LNG industry,” stated a press release from the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation.
John Rustad, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, said too many First Nation communities have been left out of economic growth in B.C. for far too long.
“It’s exciting to be
able to partner with First Nations like the Wet’suwet’en so they can share in the ben-efits of a new LNG export industry - stronger economies, good-paying jobs and collectively working to establish environmen-tal legacies made pos-sible by LNG develop-ment,” he said.
The province has also reached pipeline benefits agreements with the
Skin Tyee First Nation and the Nee Tahi Buhn Indian Band for the proposed Coastal GasLink project, and with the Nisga’a Nation for the proposed Prince Rupert Gas
Transmission pipeline project.
The B.C. govern-ment anticipates signing similar agree-ments with other First Nations in the near future.

Another expensive year coming for BC taxpayers
British Columbians face a number of tax and fee increases in 2015, courtesy of three levels of government, says the
Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF).“It will be another expensive year for taxpay-
ers, as we hand over more money to govern-ment,” said Jordan Bateman, B.C. Director for the CTF. “With MSP, EI, CPP, BC Hydro, ICBC and BC Ferries all going up, it’s no wonder why ‘B.C.’ is joked to be short for ‘Bring Cash’.”
Among the tax and levy increases coming in 2015:
The Medical Services Premium tax increases $96 for families of three or more; $60 for cou-ples; and $23 for individuals on January 1.
BC Hydro will raise electricity rates 6 per cent on April 1, 2015 – approximately $72 for the av-erage home.
ICBC is expected to raise basic auto insur-ance in 2015 – roughly $36 for the average car.
Cities are still working on their budgets, but Surrey has announced a $162 property tax hike for an average home, and Vancouver is looking at a similar increase.
BC Ferries has announced a 3.9 per cent fare increase for 2015.
EI and CPP taxes are going up $23 in 2015.These cost increases could be just the tip of
the iceberg. The possibility of a TransLink sales tax in the Lower Mainland, which residents will get a chance to vote on over the spring of 2015, would increase costs by $258 on the average household. That would be the single biggest tax increase in the country in 2015.
“For all the politicians’ handwringing about affordability, their actions show it’s fake concern – their massive increases in taxes and fees con-tinually make it more expensive to live in B.C.,” said Bateman. “Every government and agency seems to get their pound of esh, and one won-ders when enough will be enough.”
There is some good news from the federal gov-ernment for those who have children. As part of its annual New Year’s Tax Changes report, the CTF calculated federal tax savings for families from the implementation of the Family Tax Cut, combined with the Universal Child Care Bene t enhancement. In B.C., that would translate into $1,587 in federal income tax savings for a two-child, one-income, two-parent family earning $60,000 per year.
CTF calculations for the federal tax changes that will be occurring on January 1st for 26 dif-ferent income and family scenarios can be found at http://www.taxpayer.com/media/2015-CTF-NYTC.pdf

Father’s cherished giftsTwo months ago my
dad called and as soon as I heard the sound of his voice I knew some-thing was wrong.
“Hi, Honey,” he said softly. “Do you have a couple of min-utes?” Instinctively my eyes welled up with tears and I could feel my throat constrict.
“Yes,” I said, brac-ing myself for the news he was about to deliv-er. His voice unchar-acteristically cracked with emotion as he told me he had esoph-ageal cancer. Feeling the quick onset of a throbbing headache and a shortness of breath I failed to stop myself from crying out loud.
“I don’t want you to worry,” he said. “I’ll be going for tests and we’ll nd out what can be done. I’ll keep you informed. Just think positive thoughts, okay? There’s nothing we can’t handle.”
After our conversa-tion ended and I hung up the phone I no lon-ger tried to control my
sorrow and allowed myself to weep with abandon.
Ken White was only 67 years old and had just retired in May. He was full of life and ex-cited about the future. He’d been diagnosed with skin cancer and a slow-growing leu-kemia not long ago - both of which he’d downplayed as noth-ing to be concerned about. But this new discovery of a life-threatening tumor in his lower esophagus was alarming.
I spent the rest of the afternoon and eve-ning in a haze. I tried to only think optimis-tically as he requested, but I found myself emotionally raw and physically drained, breaking down in tears several times over the next few days. After our mother’s death less than a year prior I’d convinced myself that our healthy fa-ther would live to be at least 100 years old.
Over the next cou-ple of weeks, as he
went for tests and we waited for results I got better at carrying out his wishes to only think positively, and when he called with an update I fully expect-ed him to tell me the cancer was treatable. When my hopes were met I cried again, but this time with tears of joy.
“We’re going to ght this aggressively, Kiddo,” my dad said, detailing the weekly chemotherapy and daily radiation treat-ments for the entire month of December. “Hopefully the tumor will decrease in size and the surgeon will be able to remove it in the new year.”
As promised, Dad kept us updated with his progress, even send-ing smiling pictures of himself hooked up to an IV getting his che-mo.
Since he was ad-vised to avoid crowds and public places so his weakened immune system wouldn’t be challenged, we weren’t
sure if we’d have the opportunity to see him at Christmas. Fortunately his doc-tors approved a visit from us providing we were in good health.
My children, hus-band, brothers, sister-in-law, nephews, uncle, grandma and I ar-rived at Dad’s place on Boxing Day at 11 am at his request. When we got to the door his wife said he was rest-ing and summoned us into the living room. We visited quietly for awhile until we were suddenly interrupted by a jolly good bel-lowing of “Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas!”
Looking up in sur-prise, I watched my father enter the room wearing a Santa out- t and beard, ringing a bell and handing out gift cards to every-one.
Again I felt my eyes well up with tears of joy.
It was one of those moments I’ll never forget. Not because it caught us off guard
in such a sweet and wonderful way, but be-cause it so completely captured the essence of this man who al-ways seems to react to everything with an optimistic frame of mind.
“My cup is never half empty,” he’s of-ten said over the years. And from a lifetime of observing how he’s chosen to think, his cup isn’t just half full, it’s running over.
Dad’s jovial out-look has been an in-credible blessing to our family. But the gift we cherish most is his un-conditional love and support – something we adoringly give right back.

The B.C. government begins a provincial tour of lique ed natural gas technology and skills training in Prince George Wednesday and Thursday, with more than 2,000 people registered to attend.
Jobs Minister Shirley Bond said the tour focuses on the need for skilled workers as the baby boom generation retires. The events will include presentations from the government’s
“Find Your Fit” trades training program, including demonstrations of trades such as welding.
Science World B.C. is taking part, with a demonstration of energy science and technology.
The tour moves to Fort St. John Nov. 4-5, Terrace Nov. 9-10, Prince Rupert Nov. 18-19, Squamish Dec. 16-17, Nanaimo Jan. 13-14 and Kamloops Feb. 3-4.
Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman said
more communities will be added after the initial seven stops. Displays and information kits show how gas is extracted using hydraulic fracturing of deep rock formations, and how it is processed into LNG for use as fuel for vehicles or power plants.
The government hosted a demonstration of LNG at the legislature Monday, showing how the super-cooled gas behaves as a liquid when exposed to the air, poured into water, or burned.
John Siebenga Houston Councillor
“I’m still not familiar with all the issues that affect the District, but my three priori-ties are people, environment and business.
My decisions will be based first on what will assist, support and help the members of this community. Second, on what will preserve, enhance and protect the natural beauty of the area. Third, on what will encourage,
equip and sustain businesses in this town. I look forward to working on council and
beginning to implement my vision for mak-ing Houston a good choice based on those
priorities.”
Tim AndersonHouston Councillor
“I’ve got to get familiar with what the previous council has started, and
tie up loose ends. Then, I will get some training to better understand
Houston finances and projects. Then we’ll sit down as council and
go over our individual goals and develop a plan as a whole council about a direction for Houston.”
Dawn PotvinHouston Councillor
“In light of everything, we had a strong and progressive 2014. My hopes for our community in 2015 is to continue to show our strength and to move forward in enhancing health care services and attracting secondary industry. We are defi-
nitely moving in the right direction and I’m excited for what’s in store.”
Shane BrienenHouston Mayor
“Improving health care for residents is my number one goal. Second is to move forward with the economic development plan for Houston. With the closure of Houston Forest Products,
we want to help support local businesses as much as we can.”

“I hope to make gains towards 24/7 health care, and bring new ideas to achieve that. Obviously what we’re doing isn’t working
and I think ideas will come out of the Northern Health Review of Houston’s health services. I’d like to see new development in Houston in 2015. It could be an exciting year with all the talk on development in the north. Hopefully we can attract new
business. I think the Houston Labour Market Strategy gives a clear view of how to proceed.
We will also be moving forward with projects started by the previous council.”
Rick LundriganHouston Councillor
“My goal is to work with council in moving Houston forward, while being
cognizant of our budget shortfalls. Hopefully we’ll prioritize our current
infrastructure and facility needs. Before moving forward on new
projects, we need to ensure a need, and sustainability in our current and
future budgets.”
Jonathan Van BarneveldHouston Councillor
“My priorities are to finish the projects we started, like branding and tourism, and get the town moving in a positive
direction in terms of HFP recovery. The focus is attracting new residents
and promoting our assets.”

Diabetes. That was the diagnoses three-
year-old Jenna received in 2008.Now, six years later, she is constantly
vigilant about her health and energy levels. “Everything she does affects her,” said her
mom, Cheryl Reitsma. “Stress, exercise, eating — all of that will
affect what her sugar levels will be like.”Jenna does little blood tests to check her
sugars every two hours during the day, and at 2 a.m. every night.
“It’s just become life for us,” Cheryl said.If Jenna’s sugars get too high or too low
she takes immediate action. If it’s too high, she gets on her insulin pump, if it’s too low,
she eats something sweet. If action isn’t taken, Jenna could fall into a coma which could threaten her life.
Even minor health concerns can quickly become major, using up so much energy that her body can’t keep up.
“A cold or bladder infection can end up putting her in the hospital,” Cheryl said.
As a single Mom with three kids, Cheryl says it’s hard, especially with the closest hospital in Smithers.
She either loads up the whole family for a hospital trip or calls in a friend to watch her daughter Ari-Marie and son Kalib while she takes Jenna to the hospital.
Cheryl says she gets all types of support from family, friends and the church and school communities.
“It’s huge,” she said.
“My strength comes from God and knowing that this isn’t it for Jenna. There is so much more to Jenna’s life than just diabetes.”
Even facing all these challenges, Cheryl said Jenna is still thriving.
“Yes, she has this disease, and it’s a part of our life, but she’s still a little girl who loves life,” Cheryl said.
“You see her out there and you would never guess that out of all those kids she’s the one with diabetes.”
“Jenna has her moments when she is mad because she has diabetes, and she’s allowed to. I tell her it’s what you do with those emotions that makes the difference.
‘You’re allowed to be sad, you’re allowed to be frustrated, but remember that God chose you for this, and we don’t know why, but His glory is going to shine through that.’”
Jenna’s story was released in a video by Sun Life Financial last December.
Sun Life and Hope Air partner to fund free medical flights for people with diabetes living in rural Canada.
Of those people, they picked Jenna and her family for a surprise trip to Vancouver at the end of November 2014.
They visited the Vancouver Aquarium, where they went behind the scenes to hold
snakes and feed and play with dolphins. They did an opera rehearsal at the
Vancouver Opera Company, playing piano, singing and trying on opera costumes.
Opera staff even sang “Let it go” from Frozen with Jenna and her family at special request.
Finally, they visited an American Girl store, closed to the public and opened specifically so Jenna could chose a gift.
Cheryl says she was so grateful their hosts at each place invested in her kids.
“They went above and beyond,” she said.“It was huge to experience what we
experienced, and not just the things that we experienced, but the people that we came in contact with on the way.”
“We weren’t just a project, we were people.”When she was first given the option to take
the trip and be featured in the video, Cheryl says she hesitated to put her family in the public eye.
But she prayed and decided to go ahead. “My goal through this is that God’s glory
will shine through us, and that people who don’t know God will see it in how we live daily life.”

Jenna and her family visit the Vancouver Aquarium as part of a free trip from Sun Life Financial and Hope Air. “The only time Jenna has ever been to Vancouver was for hospital visits or doctor visits and they’ve never gone away on an adventure together as a family,” said a Sun Life representative. The two companies partnered to give the family that adventure.
Cheryl and Jenna enjoy a moment in the airport as they wait to head to Vancouver.

Albert Seinen
December 30, 1923 – December 17, 2014
Albert Seinen was born December 30, 1923 near Hardenberg, Holland to Albert Seinen and Grietje Seinen-Stad. From an early age, his love for animals was obvious, and he vowed that when he grew up he would be a “farmer with a dog.” When he was seventeen, he met Maria, the love of his life. Two years after they were married, they decided to go to Canada. They arrived in Houston, BC in 1949, which remained home to him ever since.Dad loved Canada and never regretted moving. Here he was able to buy land for his own farm, which he developed into a dairy. Many Houston people will remember him as the milkman who delivered milk in glass bottles with the “Alma’s Dairy” cap on top. He enjoyed building things with his own hands, and several homes, barns and many sheds were constructed over the years. Dad was musical, and you always knew where he was because he was always singing - on the tractor, while he was milking, while he was working at his sawmill or hoeing the garden. He had a lovely tenor voice. He also liked shing, and he and brother Bert often went
out after supper to put a line in the river. Later, he and Mom shed many of the lakes around Houston. He enjoyed hiking up to lookout areas, and would often return with a bouquet of wild owers or a Thermos full of huckleberries. He was an avid reader. After the children were grown, Dad and Mom did a lot of travelling, and he never tired of discovering new countries and cultures. When he became a grandfather and great-grandfather, he delighted in bouncing babies on his knee. His love for all young things continued, right down to calves, kittens and puppies. He had two dogs right up to the day he died.Dad passed into the presence of his Lord on December 17, 2014, just days before his 91st birthday. He was predeceased by all his siblings, and will be greatly missed by Maria, his wife of almost 68 years, and Grace (John Hols), Henry (Sylvia), Ann (Ross Alexander), Lucy (Stan Spletzer), Albert, and Clarence (Bobby) as well as 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.We thank God for the spiritual leadership we had from Dad. One of his favourite verses was “Lord, you have been our dwelling place
throughout all generations” (Psalm 90:1). He was a man of principle. We will remember him for his examples of fairness, a solid work ethic, and his joy in each new day. A Celebration of Life was held at the Houston Christian Reformed Church on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Glencore nishes $32 million water treatment plant at Bell Mine
Standing on the top of the plant here are Francis Gagnon, Construction Manager with SNC Lavalin, Sean O’Connell, Bell Mine Manager for Glencore Canada and John Stroiazzo, Reclamations Manager for Glencore.
Construction was managed by SNC-Lavalin, and involved several local companies including Monster Industries, Tower Communication, Belvedere Place Contracting and Glacier Electric. Crews stayed in a work camp on the east side of Babine Lake with 160-person capacity.
Water runoff from the dried Bell Mine tailings is being collected in the old mine pit, where it is then pumped to the treatment plant and then released into Babine Lake after it is treated.
Glencore is doing final touches on the water treatment plant at Bell Mine. Located across Babine Lake, the mine closed in 1992 and this plant is part of the closure plan to protect the lake and clean the runoff water being collected in the mine pit. The plant could run over 100 years until the acid runoff stops and the site is returned to its natural condition, said John Stroiazzo, Glencore Reclamations Manager.
Above photo submitted
Construction on the treatment plant started May 2014 and will be complete in early-January 2015.
