T H E P R E S I D E N T ' S C O R N E R
I would like to take th is opportunity to commend and to say thank you to all of our various committee chairmen andcommittee members for graciously accept- ing your given assignments and for the fine job you a r e doing. I know there i s little o r no credit o r recognition for the work that you do except for the personal satisfaction of a job well done but I want you to know that your efforts a r e deeply appreciated. It i s a r ea l joy and privilege to be associated with each of you.
In a Society a s large a s o u r s i t takes the combined efforts of a lot of our members to insure the success and effectiveness of our overall program. That i s the reason for our many committees. Lend them a helping h a n d wherever possible and let them know too that you sincerely appreciate the i r effortsin your behalf.
The large attendance (468) a t our joint meeting with the Geophysical of Houston in October was very gratifying. It was not only a tr ibute to our dis- tinguished lec turer , Dr . Donn Gorsline, but a good indication of the fine spi r i t of teamwork and cooperation that exis ts today between the geological and geophysical professions.
In addition to our regular meeting on November the 13th there will be another joint meeting with the Geophysical Society onNovember 20th with the Geophysical Society a s host. Le t ' s do our bes t to give the Geophysical Society the fine support they gave u s a t our October meeting.
. . . F r e d L. Smith, J r .
F rom t ime to t ime many members of our Society a r e asked to speak before various church, social o r professional groups on the subject of geology. T o a s s i s t u s inpromoting the cause of geology, the A. A.P.G. has providedresumes of speeches written by eminent geologists expressly for presentation to lay audiences. The papers a r e designed todevelop a n appreciation for the applica- tion of geology and the importance of geologists to the community, the nation's economy and society a s a whole. They a r e available for use and adaptation without requiring an acknowledgment t o authors. Some of the t i t les and authors a re :
"Geology---For Human Needs," Michel T . Halbouty, lay speech. "Geology from the Air," A. D. Howard, lay speech, 23 sl ides, 3 1/4 x 4"
standard g la s s lantern. "The Water Beneath Us," S. W. Lohman, lay speech, 33 slides, 2"xZ" 35mm. "Development of the Ear th and I t s Resources," Raymond C. Moore, lay
speech, 109 slides, Z"x2" 35mm. "Geology - - - American Style", Anonymous, lay speech. Th i s service is just another way in which the A. A.P. G. helps both the indi-
vidual geologist a s well a s the profession a s a whole. . . . McEnnis S. Newby

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Demand for geologists and geophysicists i s improving with several jobs available but unfilled a t the present because our applicants do not have the specific background and experience required. Of the 40 unemployed geologists and geophysicists in our f i les fewer than 20 res ide in the Houston a r e a . Increasing demand has resulted in our getting job inquiries f rom prospective employers in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and California in addition to Texas .
As f a r a s the Placetnent Committee i s concerned, the employment picture has not been th is bright in years .
Geologist - 36 - M. S.-U n i v e r s i t y of Kentucky - 9 y e a r s experience in geological engineering investigation for construction of highway systems, a i r s t r i p s , dam s i t e s , and buildings with Corps of Engineers and Consulting F i r m ; ground water investigations; exploration and exploitation geology with major oil company in West Texas .

Boy Scout Committee
The Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts has appealed to HGS for help in securing mer i t badge councilors for geology and surveying. They would like, also, t o have some men to spend a few days o r a week a t Camp Cima during the summer months to take boys on geology field t r ips of the camp a r e a and help them p a s s their geology mer i t badge requirements.
The Houston Area Council i s comprised of 16 d is t r ic t s , of which 12 a r e in Har r i s County. T h e 12 d is t r ic t s of H a r r i s County have 15, 318 Boy Scouts. Th i s
i s about one scout per member of the HGS. However, in 1966 only 228 boys obtained a geology merit badge a ra ther small number considering the large number of boys in scouting. Not only that, 8wo of the badges were earned a t Camp Cima, 200 miles from Houston.
I think the HGS can give some real help to the Boy Scout organization through our Boy Scout Committee, but we need men willing to give a few hours a month to do it. If you would like to help in any way, get in touch with either F red Smith a t CA 5-5757 o r C. G. Beckwith a t CA 5-1511, ext. 652.

AAPG FOUNDATION
The AAPG Foundation was established las t February. Its purpose i s to crea te a permanent Trus t to f u r t h e r scientific and educational pursuits in petroleum geology and related disciplines.
The trustees of the AMG Foundation a r e these distinguished geologists:
Dean A. McGee, Chairman Morgan J. Davis
W. Dow Hamm
The Foundation's activities will include: the encouragement and financial support of research in geology and related fields; assistance i n c a r e e r guidance to persons interested in these sciences; establishment of scholarships, awards, and educati onal loans to students in geology and allied sciences; establishment of fellowships o r "chairs" incolleges and universities for the futherance of these disciplines; assistance to public and private schools in teaching of geology and related sciences; the carrying on of Continuing Education programs; other s imi lar worthy activities.
Contributions and bequests to the AAPG Foundation a r e now being received. Many of them a r e in memory of deceased members, friends, and r e 1 a t i v e s . Checks should be made payable to the AAPG Research Fund but contri b u t i o n s intended for previously established memorials s u c h a s the A. I. Levorsen Memorial Fund o r the DeGolyer Publication Fund should be s o identified.
AAPG - Wichita Kansas - September 28 The president of the world's la rges t geological society said he re today that
most of the talk about the exciting progress of r e se rve oil f rom shale in three western s ta tes i s "too visionary" to be of much help inencouraging our immed- iate and growing short-range energy requirements.
J. Ben Carsey, Houston, Texas consultant and fo rmer oil company c h i e f geologist, predicted to the AMG Mid-Continent Section meeting "that dead oil may eventually be recovered economically from the shale, but that does not justify undueconfidence inpremature c rashprograms of experimentationcosting billions of dollars and occupying the pr imary attention of industry and govern- ment leaders. "
"You might say, " observed Mr. Carsey, "That while shale oil experimenta- tion should be fostered, current proven methods of exploration for domestic oil
r e se rves should not be neglected. "
The AAPG president said oil f rom shale will be a g rea t breakthrough when i t comes, "but s o will the trillions of ba r re l s of oil to be produced f rom bet ter secondary recovery techniques. I a m more concerned with the quantity of r e se rves that will ultimately accrue f rom the resul ts of exploration on the continental shelves, a s well a s continental interiors."
Mr. Carsey said, "Our principal concern about more r e se rves of oil and gas must be for the next decade and a distinction should be made between this and long-range needs. "
He emphasized that more and better trained geologists will find future oil and gas r e se rves in even g rea te r quantity than in the past.
"The need for continuing education with the advance in the technology of our science will continue to p r e s s on all of u s in the profession, " he noted. He re - minded his colleagues" a s conscientious and a l e r t professionals, we a r e aware that if the learning process stops even briefly, the professional geologist will fall behind and will be in danger of becoming obsolete. This major field of service in continuing education AAPG accepts and we will make significant progress . "
Regarding the AAPG's policies and programs in the future, Mr. Carsey stated, "AAPG recognizes i t s responsibility to the public and t o the industry we serve . We have taken steps to communicate better about AAPG. We h a v e taken note of our international responsibility and extended our influence more actively beyond our nation's borders ."
BOOK FOR SALE! Geological Field Studies of Matagorda County, Texas by Stanley H. Rosenthal, 1967. Available a t Cambe Log Library, 216 p., Price $25.00.
No other county in the Gulf Coast has a s large a percentage of i t s fields described a s i s done in this volume by Stanley Rosenthal.
Following brief summaries of the general geology, development history, etc., there a r e individual r epor t s on sixty-seven fields. These repor ts give tabulated data on the exploration, development and annual production from the year of discovery until the f i rs t of 1967. F o r al l fields with enough development to give subsurface control, there a r e one o r two s t ructure contour maps on producing horizons and a type log. The contour maps a r e his own interpretation. I t i s true that, in the more heavily faulted fields in this area , no two geologists a r e going to come up with identical maps, but, - a s an overall representation of structural conditions, - these appear reliable.

M r s . J e r ry C. McCain (Rita) r epo r t s that the Geo Wives Newcomers Club real ly learned the "inside of television" a t their October meeting f rom Sid Lashe r of Channel I1 KHOU-TV. Everyone was glad to s e e Bonnie Hinds (Mrs . George W. ) well again and attending th is meeting. Hope she and al l the other Geo Wives will be present a t the next meeting, November 15, a t the Geo Club. T h e r e will be a demonstration of wigs f rom Kay's Wig Shop and this should be another informative program.
Season ticket holders for the University of Houston football games a r e Marjory and Philip Allin. T h i s i sn ' t s o unusual except that they commute f rom Lafayette. They were houseguests of E. P.and E d Smith for the North Carolina State game.
Also visiting he re f rom Lafayette were Jeanne and Henry Dean. Jeanne attended the HGA luncheon-style show and got to s e e a lot of fr iends.
Everyone d r e a m s of a t r i p to New England in the fall and B and Hillord Hinson had this d r e a m come t rue . They have just returned f rom a visit with their daughter, Cecilia, and he r husband who i s s t a t i o n e d a t Portsmouth, New Hampshire. B r epo r t s that the food was one of the outstanding features of the tr ip. She especially enjoyed the lobster . Ummm!!!
The A. L. Seligs who a r e t ru ly "world t rave lers" have recently completed another interest ingtour. T h i s t ime their three week vacation took them to Japan.
Dee and Victor Russek attended a three day convention in L a s Vegas th is fall and, speaking of conventions, some Houstongeologists and the i r wives whomade plans to attend the G. C. A. G. S. Convention in San Antonio were: J e r r y and Jim Wheeler, T e r e s a and A1 Tolbert , Peggy and Bill McCorkle, Donna and Ross Dawson, Nancy and J im Snyder, Claudine and George Harcourt , Sally and Paul Berner, Rita and J e r r y McCain and Vivian and F r e d Smith. Betty and Cur t i s Franks went by way of Lion Gulch, Colorado (fifteen mi les wes t of Gunnison), where they hunted dee r and elk. If they didn't r un into any lions, Betty has promised to bring u s m o r e news of the convention for next month's Bulletin.
When their church made plans t o present a n a r t s and c ra f t s show, Pace Moore (Mrs . Homer) and Charl ie Cantrel l (Mrs . Ralph) said they were only "arty and crafty" in a culinary way s o they were put in charge of the ref resh- ments for the affair . And a fine job they did!!! Seen browsing through the many i tems on display was Emily Osanik (Mrs . Alex) who is pret ty talented tooand spends h e r ex t ra t ime making lovely ar rangements a t a flower shop nea r Lantern Lane Shoppingcenter . She has become very cautious in h e r work since sticking a wire right through he r finger. Ouch!!!

Vera Riley (Mrs . John L. )and Linda Fairchild (Mrs . Raymond E.) have com- bined forces to sel l r e a l es ta te . So geological wives' in teres ts and talents take many turns.
Making plans to attend the John Davidson Show Benefit, November 9, a re : the Char les Atchisons, the Denny Bartells, the Buddy Bartows, the Howard Coxes, the Sam Dunlaps, the T. 0. Halls, the Frank McGonagills, the Bud Phillipses, the Aubrey Rabensburgs, the R. R. Riekes, the A. L. Seligs, the Roger Stone- bu rne r s and the George Taylors . Should be a fun "night out".
Another fun "night out", this one exclusively for geological wives and their husbands, is planned for January o r February a t the Houston Music Theat re . Drinks and dinner a t Braeburn Country Club will precede the s tage show and "this promises to be one of the very best par t ies we've eve r had". (Quote and unquote Dixie Bartell, Grace Chambers and Dee Russek who a r e in charge of making the ar rangements . ) They a r e always right s o make plans now toattend.
