Walkden Resettlement Unit has begun turning away anyone under 25 years old, in breach of the statute under which these units are funded. The Resettlement Agency, which now runs the Units for the DSS, was unaware of this development which seems confined to Walkden. Staff at Walkden justify the move on the grounds that they've had trouble with this age group, and say the embargo will be lifted in a few weeks. CHAR and other homelessness organisations are protesting to the agency over this attempt to ditch responsibility for under-25-year-olds. Tesco at Prestwich - past its sell by date? Many readers will be aware that a deal had been done to sell a lot of the Prestwich Hospital site to Tescos to develop another hypermarket. Although they were refused planning permission to go ahead with the scheme, confidently an appeal was made to the Secretary of State. However, the appeal was turned down. Tescos lost a real bargain as the agreement would have involved them buying the site in 1989 at 1986 prices! Also care in the community plans had centred round this land sale going through. All new schemes were designed to resettle people from the hospital. (continued p2) page 1
