accessible, and integrated housing opportunities for individuals transitioning from an institutional

setting into the community. In addition the program seeks to establish relationships with local

housing authorities, independent rental owners and property managers to obtain accessible

housing availability in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties. The efforts are in collaboration with

our local, state and federal partners.

Aging and Disability Resource Centers, or ADRC’s serve as a

single point of entry into long term services and support systems

for older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, veterans and

families. Through the No Wrong Door Approach the Resource

Center is a welcoming and convenient location for you and your

family to get information, advice, and access to a wide variety of

services that can help an individual live independently in the

community.

Information, Referral & Assistance

Information and Assistance Specialist provide you with

knowledge about services, programs, and solutions for disability

and long-term care issues such as living arrangements, health,

adult protective services, employment and training for people

with disabilities, home maintenance, nutrition, social security,

and other publicly funded programs.

One on One Option Counseling

Options Counselors offer information about the choices that are

available to meet your long-term care needs. An Options Coun-

selor discusses factors to consider when making long-term-care

decisions and empowers individuals with informed decision

making.

Benefits Counseling

Benefit Specialist can provide accurate and current information

about private and government benefits and programs that you

may be entitled to receive. Benefit Specialists can cut the “red

tape” when people run into problems with Medicare, Social Se-

curity, and other benefits.

Streamlined Eligibility Determination for Public

Programs

ADRC’s are the entry-way to publicly funded long-term care

programs. The Resource Center will help assess your level of

need for services. They can provide information about all the

options available and help you select the solution best for you.

The Area Agency on Aging, a department of

the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development

Council, is one of twenty-eight Area Agencies

in Texas under the Older Americans Act.

The Area Agency on Aging performs three

important activities for persons age 60 and

over in the Lower Rio Grande Valley:

Advocates on behalf of older persons.

Identifies the needs of elderly.

Creates an Area Plan for meeting those

needs through a system of comprehensive

and coordinated health and support ser-

vice which enable older persons to main-

tain their independence and dignity in a

The Weatherization Assistance program is an energy efficiency program that helps low-income households manage the increasingly high cost of energy. Weatherization

Texas State Department of Insurance’s Weatherization Programs

The Texas Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) assists with the weatherization of the homes of low-income elderly and disabled adults and families.
