14 October 2014 Households receive a ‘do not vote’ letter from the NSW Electoral Commission With the Charlestown and Newcastle State By-elections to be held on Saturday, 25 October, households outside of, but bordering, the Charlestown and Newcastle electoral districts will today begin receiving an unusual communication from the NSW Electoral Commission. “Traditionally a brochure is sent to all enrolled people reminding them to vote at State by- elections, and this time is no exception’, said Electoral Commissioner, Colin Barry. “However, there could be confusion for some electors enrolled in Wallsend and Port Stephens districts who live close to the boundaries of Charlestown and Newcastle. A significant number of these electors ‘crossed the boundary’ to vote at nearby polling places in the 2011 State General Election. Any of these electors who arrive at the same polling places for these by-elections could be frustrated when told that they do not need to vote this time.” To let affected electors know they may not need to vote, a targeted letterbox drop will distribute a ‘do not vote’ message which includes a map of the electoral boundaries. The brochure also reminds people that they may still need to vote at the upcoming Newcastle City Mayoral By-election to be held on Saturday, 15 November, and to check their enrolment details. A copy of the brochure is attached. Further information about the by-elections is available at www.elections.nsw.gov.au or by calling 1300 135 736. Households receive a ‘do not vote’ letter from the NSW Electoral Commission

With the Charlestown and Newcastle State By-elections to be held on Saturday, 25 October, households outside of, but bordering, the Charlestown and Newcastle electoral districts will today begin receiving an unusual communication from the NSW Electoral Commission.

“Traditionally a brochure is sent to all enrolled people reminding them to vote at State by-elections, and this time is no exception’, said Electoral Commissioner, Colin Barry.

“However, there could be confusion for some electors enrolled in Wallsend and Port Stephens districts who live close to the boundaries of Charlestown and Newcastle. Dear Residents,

Are you enrolled to vote in the blue area of the map overleaf? If you are, we would like to let you know that you do not need to vote in the Charlestown and Newcastle State By-elections on Saturday, 25 October.

We know from past by-elections that there may be some confusion in areas close to electoral boundaries, resulting in some people turning up to vote who don’t need to.

This can lead to longer queues and confusion in the polling place, not to mention the frustration of those who have lined up only to find they are not enrolled to vote.

The message is simple. If you are enrolled in the blue area of the map overleaf, you do noT need to vote at the upcoming by-election onSaturday, 25 october 2014.

When will I need to vote next? You may be required to vote in the upcoming Newcastle City Council Mayoral By-election on Saturday, 15 November 2014. Check your enrolment details online.
