When is hot water temperature maintenance trace heating required?

Hot water temperature maintenance trace heating ensures hot

water at the point of use, whilst reducing power consumption and

water wastage, as well as offering the option to disinfect

periodically against Legionella.

The temperature of hot water cools rapidly when subjected to

lower ambient temperatures and under no-flow conditions. By

installing hot water temperature maintenance trace heating, under

thermal insulation, the hot water in the pipework can be

maintained above its minimum required temperature (usually

+55°C or +65°C) in a predetermined minimum ambient

temperature (usually +18°C).

Why install hot water temperature maintenance trace heating cable?

Today’s market is calling out for more cost

efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.

This has never been more true than in hot

water supply and distribution where this

energy consumption is a significant proportion

of a building energy usage.

The correct combination of hot water trace heating & thermal insulation will…

Reduce the amount of pipework required to supply

the hot water by removing the need for the ‘return’

part of a flow and return system.

Remove the need to ‘heat’ and then ‘re-heat’ the

water as required by a flow and return system.

Reducing the power needed to heat raise the

water.

Reduce the amount of water wasted whilst waiting

for the hot water to reach the outlet.

Allow for periodic purging of the hot water pipework

system to protect against Legionella

What is legionella?

Legionellosis is a collective term for diseases caused by Legionella bacteria including the most serious

Legionnaires disease, as well as the similar but less serious conditions of Pontiac fever and

Lochgoilhead fever.

Legionella bacteria are widespread in natural water

systems, but usually in low numbers. Outbreaks of the

illness occur from exposure to Legionella growing in

purpose built systems where water is maintained at a

temperature high enough to encourage growth (+20°C to

+45°C), such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers,

hot and cold water systems and spa pools used in all sorts

of premises (work and domestic).

If conditions are favourable, the bacteria may grow

increasing the risks of Legionnaires disease and it is

therefore important to control the risks by introducing

appropriate measures.

ESH hot water maintenance cable

Our hot water temperature maintenance heating tapes are a parallel resistance, cut to length on site,

self regulating heating cable designed to compensate for heat losses from hot water distribution

systems, as well as offering the option to disinfect periodically against Legionella.

Where applicable the water temperature can be reduced by thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) to meet

the current building regulations.
