• In our society, heat related injuries are often ignored, but are considered a preventable injury.
• Heat injuries many times will get attributed to other factors.
Example: Worker who passes out & falls down could end up being reported as a slip-and-fall injury.
• A heat stress prevention program can assist in preventing injuries.

Importance of Electrolytes
• Electrolytes are minerals (magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium) that maintain optimal nerve and muscle function.
• Electrolytes are lost through perspiration and other types of dehydration.

Heat stroke or sun stroke imminent.
HEAT INDEX 105° - 129°:
Sun stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion likely. Heat stroke possible with prolonged exposure and physical activity
HEAT INDEX 90° - 100°:
Sun stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible with prolonged exposure and physical activity.

Hydration in Industrial Settings
• Do you or your employees wear protective clothing while working in high heat environments?
• Don’t depend on thirst or sweat as an indicator of escalating body heat. Thirst is not always a dependable gauge and sweat may evaporate quickly, especially in dry-heat environments. Instead, be aware of the temperature and humidity, and drink fluids with electrolytes at regular intervals.
Always remember . . .
• Do you and your employees know the symptoms of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke?
APPROPRIATE RESPONSE:
Ointments for mild cases. DO NOT break blisters. If they do break, apply dry, sterile dressing. For severe cases, consult a physician.
APPROPRIATE RESPONSE:
Apply firm pressure on cramping muscles, then gently massage to relieve muscle spasm. Give sips of Sqwincher every 15 minutes.
