ALL THE BENEFITS OF A WORK-ing band, especially cohesion and sin-

gularity of purpose, are on display in a pairof albums that comprise this WinningSpins. Another common thread is the sig-nificance of repertoire in shaping themusic. One is a live double-CD by the FredHersch Trio that brings out the full rangeof the pianist's artistry and the remarkableempathy of his trio mates. The other islargely a fond salute to their musical andbiological father by the Brubeck BrothersQuartet.

Alive at the Village Vanguard, FredHersch Trio (Palmetto), is an affirmationof, and allusion to, how alive, physicallyand musically, Hersch is, four years afterhe spent months in a coma. This is the sec-ond album from his trio with bassist JohnHebert and drummer Eric McPherson andduring the intervening two years sinceWhirl (Palmetto) their collective sound andapproach have coalesced significantly. While Hersch is definitely in command, conceptually and musically, the playerscombine so effortlessly and gracefully thatthe music achieves a truly rare apotheosiswhich we hear as a unified whole.

Unlike many of jazz's finest pianists, ofwhom Hersch is incontestably one, he doesnot have a highly personal style identifi-able after a few bars, like Horace Silver orKeith Jarrett, but is a more versatile musi-cian, a conceptualist who adapts hisapproach to his repertoire, at times honor-ing composers by appropriating their ges-tures, at other times exploring moods andgrander traditions. Hersch inhabits tunes, getting inside them and illuminating theircore. This creative eclecticism becomessustained virtuosity in a sequence of fourtunes where Hersch and the band manageto put their personal stamp on the music offour modern jazz masters, beginning withthe crisp, scintillating bebop of CharlieParker's "Segment." It's followed by a med-ley of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman"and Miles Davis' "Nardis," the formerexplored in Ornettish vocabulary almostthe antithesis of the previous bebop.Capping it off is Hersch's "Dream ofMonk," a pastiche of Monkish gesturesinvoking not just the style but the spirit ofthe jazz icon. It is one of three Hersch orig-inals honoring jazz greats: "Tristesse" isdedicated to the late drummer PaulMotian, McPherson capturing his amor-phous sense of time, the trio his restless

spirit. "Sartorial (for Ornette)" is a furtherhomage to Coleman, wittily appropriatinghis energetic abstractions.

While there is a lot of "liveliness" fromthe trio, justifying the "alive" in the title, the album also has its reflective and sump-tuously romantic moments, some comingin indelibly etched versions of standards."From This Moment On" rides a loping,waltz-inflected rhythm, ideas flowingseamlessly out of the theme; "I Fall In LoveToo Easily" is romantically lush and lyri-cal, McPherson's brushes a cushion offeathers under Hersch's lacey lines, and"The Song Is You" is slowed down toemphasize the gorgeous melody and whatHersch calls "one of the greatest bridges inAmerican Song." Sonny Rollins' "Doxy"also benefits from a leisurely pace as thetrio develops overlapping lines and inter-nal dialogues in a cubist approach, expos-ing the tune's various angles.

A similar cubist, multi-angled take to afamiliar song is a highlight, and the open-ing track, of Lifetimes, The BrubeckBrothers Quartet (Blue Forest). It occurson "The Duke," one of five tunes on thealbum by, or forever associated with, DaveBrubeck. He is, of course, the father of elec-tric bassist and bass trombonist Chris anddrummer Dan Brubeck, co-leaders of thequartet rounded out by pianist ChuckLamb and guitarist Mike DeMicco, a work-ing band that has been together more thana decade. "The Duke," one of Dave's mostcharming tunes, begins with racing drumsspeeding along the theme from keys andguitar until the tempo drops at the bridge, piano etching the melody as originally con-ceived. Chris’ bass solo is a variation thatpicks up momentum and the tempos varythroughout the piece, cohering through anadmirable group dynamic. That banddynamic is one of the chief pleasures of thisalbum, one spurred by Dan's creativelyrestless but groove-oriented drummingand the tight interplay of piano and guitar.Chris Brubeck adds welcome variety withhis bass trombone which is part of theensemble but also takes a solo turn on"Jazzanians" and sings the melody of "MyOne Bad Habit."

The Fred Hersch Trio returns to theVillage Vanguard, September 11-16.The Brubeck Brothers Quartet playsIridium, September 30.

TERI ROIGERDIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / SEPTEMBER 3A distinctive singer among hundreds of jazz voices, Teri Roiger stretches boundariesbeyond jazz standards. Aside from teaching at the SUNY New Paltz Jazz Program,Roiger has penned lyrics to music of Billy Strayhorn, Thelonious Monk and DeweyRedman and has recently recorded the songbook of the late Abbey Lincoln. This CDrelease party celebrates the issue of her third album, Dear Abbey for Greg Osby'sInner Circle label. While Roiger is not the biggest name in jazz, her repertoire standstall in terms of the challenge it presents to her flexible, distinctive, dynamic voice. Thelong-time Woodstock resident will be joined by husband/bassist John Menegon, pianist Frank Kimbrough and ex-Shirley Horn drummer Steve Williams. Request herdelightful version of Redman's "Dewey's Tune." MGN

TOOTS THIELEMANSROSE THEATER / SEPTEMBER 28-29The Belgian harmonica master and guitarist celebrated his 90th birthday in April sothis is a grand time to fete his impact on jazz. Toots Thielemans describes his singu-lar harmonica sound as mining "that little space between a smile and a tear." Sincegetting hooked on the art form during World War II's German occupation, Thielemanshas found a special niche in TV commercials, movies and Brazilian jazz. His all-starexplorers these two nights will include pianists Kenny Werner, Herbie Hancock andEliane Elias, guitarists Oscar Castro-Neves and Dori Caymmi, bassist Marc Johnson, drummer Rafael Barata and more. This performance is part of Jazz at LincolnCenter's Visionary Voices series. No doubt he'll also mark the 50th birthday of his sig-nature tune, "Bluesette." KF

LUIGI GRASSOFEINSTEIN'S / SEPTEMBER 10Altoist Luigi Grasso has emerged as one of Italy's most exciting young jazz stars, already a veteran whose 15 years of touring experience belie his tender age of 25. Amainstay at Smalls Jazz Club, Grasso has gained wide acclaim for his lightning-fasttechnical facility and vast knowledge of straight-ahead jazz repertoire. This month, hewill appear as a featured guest in a performance at Feinstein's at Loews Regency aspart of the Monday Night Jazz series curated by saxophonist Harry Allen. This serieshas quickly earned a devoted following for its warm and reverent approach to belovedstandards. Grasso, joined by Allen, altoist Jesse Davis, pianist Rossano Sportiello, bassist Joel Forbes and drummer Chuck Riggs, will prove a most welcome addition tothis tradition. SH

PEDRO GIRAUDO'S EXPANSIONS BIG BANDJAZZ GALLERY / SEPTEMBER 21Bassist/composer Pedro Giraudo's musical output seamlessly blends the tango-liketextures of his native Argentina with classical structures, and the improvisationalspirit of jazz. Upon relocating to the United States in 1996, Giraudo soon found his tal-ents being utilized by luminaries such as multi-instrumentalist Paquito D'Rivera andsinger Ruben Blades. As the leader of the Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra, he has con-ceived a wholly modern design that is equal parts tribute to his influences and to forg-ing a new creative path for big band jazz. The group's latest album Cordoba was metwith critical acclaim, garnering several Latin Jazz Corner "Best of" Awards. Giraudowill bring his Expansions Big Band to the Jazz Gallery for two sets of progressivemusical dialogue and harmonic interaction. EW

ALFREDO RODRIGUEZJAZZ STANDARD / SEPTEMBER 4Alfredo Rodriguez should be at the top of anyone's list regarding emerging players.Brimming with unlimited talent and chops to burn, this pianist is one you should payclose attention to. Based on the studio performance of his debut recording produced byQuincy Jones, Sounds of Space (Mack Avenue), Rodriguez is well on his way to becom-ing a superstar. At age 26, he is comparable in sheer ability to icons two or three timeshis age. More a progressive than a strictly Latin jazz artist, the Havana-born Cubanfires up the 88s in an astonishing manner. His emotionally charged, flawless tech-nique and tireless energy truly rank second to none in contemporary jazz. In this clas-sic jazz trio setting, bassist Ricardo Rodriguez and drummer Henry Cole complementthe pianist. MGN

NATALIE CRESSMANDROM / SEPTEMBER 6To call Natalie Cressman precocious would be an understatement. At the tender age of20, she's definitely preternaturally talented: a triple threat as trombonist, vocalist andcomposer. This gig is her third CD release party for her debut album Unfolding (self dis-tributed at natlaliecressman.com) by her sextet, Secret Garden. The other two were inCalifornia, since she hails from the Bay Area. Her trombone sound is remarkable: pen-etrating and luminous on the sensuous "Skylight" and down-home on "That Kind," bothmemorable originals. Her singing is more a work-in-progress: a bit thin and tentativeat times, but "Honeysuckle Rose" is slyly coquettish and she incorporates wordlessvocals seamlessly into arrangements. Also impressive is the band itself, as the oldestmember is only 25. GK

DAN TEPFERBIRDLAND / SEPTEMBER 25-29No matter what his specific role on the bandstand or in the studio is, pianist Dan Tepferdraws attention to his work. CDs include stunning duo improvisations with Lee Konitz,Duos With Lee; a trio date, Five Pedals Deep, that mostly focuses on his striking origi-nals; and his remarkable Goldberg Variations/Variations (Sunnyside) that features J.S.Bach's 32 variations and his improvisations on them. Tepfer has a busy month high-lighted by the Bud Powell all-star tribute band at Birdland including saxophonist GregOsby, trumpeter Tim Hagans, bassist Lonnie Plaxico and drummer Matt Wilson. Thepianist is also looking forward to his solo set at Greenwich House on Sept. 14, whichwill be his premiere concert performance of the complete "Goldberg Variations" and hisaccompanying inventions. KD

JESSE DAVISSMALLS JAZZ CLUB / SEPTEMBER 11-12Originally from New Orleans, alto saxophonist Jesse Davis boasts a ferocious techniqueand unerring sense of swing that fuels his heavily bebop-influenced playing, althoughhis Sonny Stitt-like fire often yields to a tender affinity for ballads. A former sidemanfor Jack McDuff, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Jones and Wynton Marsalis, Davis has estab-lished his bona fides as a leader in his own right, a fact made readily apparent on hisrecent recording Live at Smalls. Davis reunites the album's line-up—trumpeter RyanKisor, pianist Spike Wilner, bassist Peter Washington and drummer BillyDrummond—in a CD release celebration at Smalls. Few saxophonists today grasp thebebop idiom as intently as Davis does and his performances are not to be missed. SH

ANDERSON BROTHERS59E59 THEATERS / SEPTEMBER 11 - OCTOBER 7The Andersons, multireed-playing identical twins, have cut their teeth in jazz's finestlarge ensembles, among them the Lincoln Center and Vanguard Jazz Orchestras. Just25 years old, both have Masters degrees from Julliard and each sport remarkable abil-ities on clarinet and saxophone. Commemorating the late Artie Shaw's 100th birthdayin 2010, the Andersons hosted a sextet reverentially reproducing the clarinetist'sworks. In much the same fashion, the Anderson's six-piece band—joined by Jon-ErikKellso on trumpet, pianist Ehud Asherie, bassist Clovis Nicolas and drummer KevinDorn—will play the music of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey with interspersed footage fromthe 1947 film The Fabulous Dorseys. Their self-released, The Anderson Twins Play theFabulous Dorseys, also will be available. The same band will perform at the SaintPeter’s Church’s Midtown Jazz at Midday series on September 5. RM

STEFON HARRIS BLUE NOTE / SEPTEMBER 7-9Grammy-nominated vibraphonist Stefon Harris has demonstrated his penchant forgenre-splitting hip hop grooves and funk-infused riffing while remaining deeply rootedin jazz. From the 1998 release of A Cloud of Red Dust to the 2009 Urbanus, his sevenendeavors as bandleader should be noted as music of the deepest sincerity. His latestissue is no different; co-led by trumpet player Christian Scott and saxophonist DavidSanchez, the group recorded in Havana, Cuba, which is 90 miles from Florida, hencethe album’s title, Ninety Miles Project. With accompaniment and compositions byCuban musicians, the effect is Afro-Cuban styling drenched in post-bop sensibility. TheBlue Note date will include Nicholas Payton, subbing for Scott, with pianist EdwardSimon, bassist Luques Curtis, drummer Henry Cole, and Mauricio Herrera on congas. RM

JOHN CARLINIHIGH LAWN PAVILLION / SEPTEMBER 20Guitar Player magazine calls John Carlini "a wily mainstream jazz veteran with anunerring feel for all idioms." The son of a NY Philharmonic violinist, this guitarist'scareer came to prominence after a Grammy-nominated stint with the cutting-edgeDavid Grisman Dawg Jazz Band. Carlini's jazz influenced orchestrations can be heardon string quartet albums as well as in the film "King of The Gypsies." He received aDrama Desk nomination for his contributions to the off-Broadway hit, "The Song ofSingapore." Extra notoriety came when he replaced Jerry Garcia in The GreatAmerican Music Band. With strong influences in jazz, classical and bluegrass roots,Carlini will be joined by Rob Thomas on bass and drummer Gordon Lane.

DEZRON DOUGLASMAKEDA / SEPTEMBER 27Born and raised in Hartford CT, bassist Dezron Douglas first felt the music calling asa member of his father's gospel quartet. Further investigation led Dezron to the HarttSchool of Music, where he was guided by the legendary Jackie McLean. Dezron wouldgo on to record with master drummer Michael Carvin and pianist Cyrus Chestnut, and share the bandstand with Pharaoh Sanders, Nicholas Payton, Eric Alexander,Kevin Mahogany and the Marsalis Bros. As a teacher, he encourages his students toembody the music, an attitude Douglas himself lives for. After seeing a Douglas per-formance, one blogger commented, "He played as if he loves the whole concept of timeand being in it..." Douglas and alto saxophonist Lummie Spann bring their New JazzWorkshop to complement the Ethiopian cuisine at Makeda.

CHRISTIAN SANDSSOMERVILLE JAZZ FESTIVAL / SEPTEMBER 9Billy Taylor devoted his life to the history and the future of this music, reaching backto regale us with tales of Art Tatum, while hipping us to the next rising star: includ-ing pianist Christian Sands. A student of music since age three, composing at five,Sands has shown an extraordinary comfort with stride, swing, bebop, Brazilian andAfro-Cuban styles. Just 23, Sands already has shared stages with Lou Donaldson,Phil Woods, James Moody and Christian McBride; and he sat-in one night in a mem-orable duet with Oscar Peterson. With four CDs to his credit, Sands indelibly impress-es upon the listener his abilities to channel from the masters, while taking us toplaces not realized before. From someone like this much is expected and Sands deliv-ers…always. He comes to explore at Somerville with bassist Corcoran Holt and gui-tarist Mark Whitfield.

VIC JURISOSPAC JAZZ FESTIVAL / SEPTEMBER 22In his Jersey City home, a 10-year-old Vic Juris picked up a guitar and never let go.Now, with nearly 20 recordings as a leader, Juris also has shared his phenomenalskills with Larry Coryell, Sarah Vaughan, Jimmy Smith, James Moody and MichelLegrand. This year he was honored as a top guitarist by the Jazz JournalistsAssociation. For more than a decade, Juris has toured the world as a member of sax-ophonist Dave Liebman's group, where his role is as a second horn. The author ofnumerous books on jazz guitar and technique, Juris brings his inspiring talent to playat OSPAC's 10th anniversary celebration, sharing the stage with saxophonist SteveWilson, bassist Ed Howard and drummer Anthony Pinciotti. From Ornette to AlecWilder, anyplace Juris hangs his hat is home.

TENOR SAXOPHONIST AND FLU-tist Lew Tabackin is best known for his

role as the featured soloist with the bigband led for more than three decades byhis wife, composer-arranger-pianistToshiko Akiyoshi. The unit disbanded in2004 and has been revived infrequentlyonly for special events, so Tabackin hasconcentrated on his small groups, includ-ing a piano-less quartet with trumpeterRandy Brecker he renewed earlier thismonth at the Detroit Jazz Festival and, most notably, his trio with bassist BorisKozlov and drummer Mark Taylor. Thattrio's last recording, Live in Paris(LewTabackin.com), begins with a com-pelling rendition of Duke Ellington's "SelfPortrait of the Bean" from the recordingsession Ellington made in 1962 forImpulse!, Duke Ellington Meets ColemanHawkins.

Last month Tabackin talked eagerlyabout his fondness for Hawkins, love of thejazz tradition and differing approach to histwo instruments. "I am dedicated to point-ing out the importance of ColemanHawkins," he says. "He's the father of usall, the father of the tenor saxophone, thefather of bebop, the father of free jazz, thefather of so many things. Yet the youngerplayers today, if they go back to HankMobley they think they've gone back to theroots. That's as far as they'll go; it's sopathetic that they don't get it. That's why Ilike to play 'Self Portrait of the Bean,'which almost nobody plays because it'shard to play properly."

He tells a story about Hawkins beingquestioned in the 1950s, not long before hisdeath, about Louis Armstrong. Hawk, herelates, acknowledged that Louis was agreat player, obviously a genius, but hesaid of Satchmo: "He's still playing 'HelloDolly' and I'm playing all kinds of s**t."

"Hawk was truly an avant-garde musi-cian," says the 72-year-old Tabackin. "Ittook me a long time to actually appreciatehis contribution. When I was quite young Icouldn't understand it because I was com-ing out of Sonny Rollins and JohnColtrane, and actually Hawkins was too farout, his playing was much more abstractthan Coltrane's, which was pretty muchorganized and symmetrical. Hawk was allover the place, a little more like Rollins, and I couldn't get it until the light bulbfinally went on."

Tabackin sees the absence of apprecia-tion for and recognition of Hawkins as partof a larger problem with today's jazz musi-cians and audiences. When he plays heoften feels listeners lack the perspective

LEW TABACKINTonal Virtuosity

By George Kanzler

necessary to connect with the music. "ArtBlakey used to say you have to be educatedto appreciate jazz, but people these daysdon't know the history. They haven't lis-tened to enough of the very beautiful andrich, and actually pretty short, history ofjazz," he explains. "So I have to approach itin a kind of Zen way, as if the audiencedoesn't know anything. Once at Birdland Iplayed a middle note on the tenor and putas much as I could into the one note, and Ifelt people becoming part of that note. Itwas a true Zen experience, getting into thenote. They didn't have to know the historyof that lick; they just felt it."

However, Tabackin definitely feels thehistory when he plays his tenor sax, intenton keeping alive the spirit and legacy ofsuch largely forgotten tenor titans asLucky Thompson, Don Byas and BenWebster. Of the latter he says, "MikeHashim came up with a phrase when wewere on a panel talking about Ben, 'tonalvirtuosity.' I love that phrase becauseeverybody thinks of virtuosity as howmany notes you can play, how many fastruns and notes in a row without taking abreath. But to be able to play the instru-ment and express so much with the sound, the tone, that's real virtuosity."

While Tabackin's tenor playing is firmlyin the tradition, referencing such robustlyadventurous saxophonists as Hawkins andRollins, whose famous trios are an inspira-tion for his own, his flute playing express-es a different side of his musical personality.

"I have a duality I try to maintain," hesays, "and with the flute, I'm thinking in anarrative way as opposed to the bebop wayof my tenor playing. I developed my flutefrom the classical, impressionistic Frenchstyle and I try to tell a story with it." A lotof the stories came from Toshiko so, hesays, there's a Japanese, Zen influence onhis flute style too.

Lew Tabackin leads a quartet in aTribute to Shelly Manne, a drummerhe feels is another largely forgottengiant, at Jazz at Kitano, September21-22, with Italian drummer RobertoGatto, Russian pianist Yakov Okun, and bassist Phil Palombi.

31Mike LeDonne photo by Gene Martin

"A FRIEND OF MINE USED TO SAYthat jazz is a participation sport, not a

spectator sport. It's a funny analogy but Ithought: that's really true." This observa-tion perfectly describes pianist/organistMike LeDonne's endeavors as both a side-man and as a leader. LeDonne's resuméincludes stints with bandleader BennyGoodman, vibraphonist Milt Jackson andsaxophonist Benny Golson as well as lead-ing his own groups on both the piano andorgan. Speaking about his career, LeDonnesays, "I just want to get better. That's reallyall I've ever focused on. How do I get better?"

A native of Bridgeport CT, LeDonnegrew up in a musical household. His fatherwas a guitarist who ran a local music store.LeDonne began to play the piano at agefive and the organ by the age of ten.Regarding his early musical experiences,LeDonne says, "We had a piano and anorgan in our house. There was a record myparents used to play; a ragtime guy playing'Tiger Rag' and my first thing was sort ofpantomiming to that when my parents hadparties."

LeDonne's initial inspirations camefrom the R&B and soul-fueled sounds ofSam and Dave, Wilson Pickett and JamesBrown. "I loved James Brown as a kid; itcommunicated to me," he says. "When itwas on, I was energized. And it's that samething with great jazz music and I thinkthat comes from the rhythm. The humanelement is in that rhythm."

Deciding that music would be his career,LeDonne attended the New EnglandConservatory of Music in Boston. He origi-nally focused on classical but began tostudy with jazz pianist Jaki Byard at theconservatory. On his audition with Byard,LeDonne says, "I played 'All Blues' orsomething. He was just so much fun to bearound and so not like the New EnglandConservatory, which was stuffy and stiff."

After graduation, LeDonne moved toNew York City as a member of theWidespread Depression Jazz Orchestra. In1982, he received an opportunity of a life-time when he auditioned for Benny

Goodman. At age 25, LeDonne found him-self playing piano with the legend.LeDonne's capacity to perform differentstyles won him the coveted role inGoodman's group. "With Benny Goodman, the only reason I made it through the audi-tion was because I knew about HankJones, the refined sound of Teddy Wilsonbut I could use the language of BudPowell," he says.

In 1988, LeDonne released his debutalbum as a leader. Titled 'Bout Time,LeDonne recorded it with renowned pro-ducer Rudy van Gelder. On recording thedisk, LeDonne says, "I sit down at thepiano and put the headphones on, and Iplay a chord and there it is, the Rudy VanGelder piano sound from all my disks onPulse and Savoy and I'm like, 'Wow!'"

Around the same time, LeDonne joinedMilt Jackson's group as a pianist. "Miltreally enjoyed me because I loved to playthe blues and I love to swing," he says.LeDonne continued to perform with himuntil his death in 1999. LeDonne paidhomage to Jackson with the 2001 CD BagsGroove: A Tribute to Milt Jackson, analbum that featured several of Jackson'scompositions including "Namesake" andthe title cut.

Since 2000, LeDonne has spent hisTuesdays playing the Hammond B3 at theUpper West Side mainstay, Smoke. Joininghim weekly are the musical talents of tenorsaxophonist Eric Alexander, guitarist PeterBernstein and drummer Joe Farnsworth.Since beginning his engagement at Smoke,LeDonne has seen his organ playing getbetter with every gig. "I feel like I'm a realorgan player now. Before I was a guy wholoved the organ and always played it; but Inever worked on it that much professional-ly. It doesn't limit me now. It's like ridinga bike; it's all coordination."

Throughout the past decade, LeDonnehas found consistent inspiration in hisassociates, particularly saxophonistGeorge Coleman and pianist HaroldMabern. "George Coleman, let me just say,he's my man," he declares. "Him andHarold Mabern are beautiful people andgeniuses of music, period. They have beenhuge influences on me in the past 10years."

Whatever the future may hold forLeDonne, his devotion to playing will con-tinue to enthrall any audience member."You can't stay in the same place, but atthe same time it's got to move up,"LeDonne says. "You can't just go forward, you gotta take it up."

Mike Le Donne's band, 5LIVE, thatincludes Eric Alexander (tenor saxo-phone), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet), JohnWebber (bass) and Joe Farnsworth(drums) performs at Smoke September28-29.

One from the heartKate Baker always wanted to sing at

the annual September 11th commemora-tive concert, but for a long time the dateconflicted with the yearly OSPAC JazzFestival, which she produces. Baker even-tually was able to bump back the OSPACfest and do both events. "The September11th concert always means so much to me;it's one of the most special gigs I've everdone," she says. "It reminds you of what'simportant in life, to value what you have. The whole community comes together tosupport and be inspired by one another."More than 30 musicians volunteer to playthe event, in configurations devised by pro-ducer/singer E.J. Decker. "You never knowwho you're going to be playing with, it'salways people with great reputations,"Baker says. "E.J. organizes it in such a waythat you're surrounded by the best musi-cians. There's a great vibe. There's so muchlove in the room." Since there's no rehears-al, the tunes tend to be classics, withthemes appropriate to the occasion. "I don'tlook at it as a challenge, but as a new expe-rience," Baker says. "You always interactdifferently with a new ensemble. Even ifsomething is familiar, you look at it in anew way." The September Concert: TheHeart of Jazz starts 6 p.m., at Ashford &Simpson's Sugar Bar Sept. 11; the lineupincludes singers Antoinette Montague,Amy London, Linda Ciofalo and RosannaVitro, saxophonists Claire Daly and CarolSudhalter, and many more. Baker andVitro are also on the extensive lineup of theOSPAC fest in West Orange NJ scheduledfor Sept. 22.

Aldana didn't speak English when she

arrived in the U.S. on a Berklee scholar-ship. "It took me three or four years tounderstand what was going on around me,"she says. "It was tough but I didn't thinkabout it too much. I was not depressed; itfelt so natural for me to go to Berklee. Ilearned English by hanging out." ButAldana was more than familiar with thevocabulary of jazz, including CharlieParker, Cannonball Adderley, LesterYoung and Michael Brecker. "I startedplaying alto at age 6; after about five yearsI heard Sonny Rollins and that was it—Iswitched to tenor and haven't been back toalto much since then," Aldana says. Shefollows in the footsteps of her father andgrandfather, both well-known LatinAmerican tenor players. The Big Apple isnow home to the 2009 Berklee grad. "Ialways knew I'd end up in New York. I lovethe city so much; this is the best place for amusician to grow up. There are so manyconcerts to go to. I don't want to miss anyof it. You can't find this passion and energyanywhere else." Catch Aldana atShapeshifter Lab Sept. 16, part of theInner Circle Music Festival. Other festivalevents include singers Tammy Scheffer(Sept. 12) and Sara Serpa (Sept. 13) at theCornelia Street Café.

taking it easy recently. "I decided to stay inNew York all summer and write as muchas I can. I need time to just sit and be lazy.To write I need time to fuel myself, to putsome artistic gasoline into my body."Listeners will have a chance to hear thefruits of her relaxation and labors thismonth when she debuts new music with atwo-keyboard quartet including pianist/

composer Yves Leveille of Quebec. The twohave been friends and collaborators sincehe wandered into her weekly gig atArthur's Tavern almost 10 years ago. Sincethen, they have released several recordingson a Montreal-based label and playedtogether in many configurations."Musically, we try to have a conversation,"Yamamoto says. "We sometimes say thesame word at the same time; we develop anew language. In a quartet setting it'sexciting to find space for both of us. Twopianos can be too much, but when we findthe right dialogue it creates a magicalmoment." Besides new compositions byboth pianists, the quartet will play tunesfrom Yamamoto's recent CD The Next Page(AUM). "I'm so curious for us to cook thematerial together," she says. "Even withmy own songs I don't know what's going tohappen." Hear for yourself whenYamamoto and Leveille play the CorneliaStreet Café Sept. 30.

The Musician Label Owners Corner"I was one of those kids who was born

singing harmony, so music was always inmy life," recalls Jana Herzen, founder andpresident of Motéma Music. A Bay Areanative whose songwriting talents led her atan early age to perform extensively in cof-fee shops and nightclubs, Herzen's artistryand boundless musical curiosity have sinceenabled her to develop Motéma into one oftoday's most respected independent labels, one that sports a dazzling array of talentsincluding Randy Weston, Joe Locke, RufusReid, KJ Denhert, David Murray and Jean-Michel Pilc.

Herzen moved to New York in 1980 and, upon finishing her studies at NYU, she andseven classmates joined with actor BobLupone to found the esteemed ManhattanClass Company theater organization. While there, Herzen filled a variety of busi-ness and artistic roles, an experience thatwould prove transformative in her ownbusiness development. "MCC taught me somuch about how to motivate a group to pro-duce projects, raise money and writegrants. In some ways Motéma, which isvery artist centric, is like a musical versionof MCC." After nearly 10 years with MCC,Herzen returned to her musical roots, leav-ing in 1991 to travel internationally, per-form and develop her songwriting career.Eventually returning to the San Franciscoarea, Herzen was initiated into the music ofAfrica by a group of Congolese expatriatesliving in Santa Cruz who introduced her tomulti-instrumentalist Shaka Ra Mutela. The meeting sparked a three-year collabo-ration during which she sang in and helpedmanage Shaka Ra's band, while he in turnproduced her CD Soup's on Fire, a projectbegun in Paris and completed in SanFrancisco.

This musical partnership proved pivotalin ultimately defining the artistic range ofMotéma. "Learning African music broughtme to a new level of hearing and under-standing," Herzen explains. "I came to real-ize that the heart of all American popmusic is in Africa, and that is why Motémahas evolved as a World-Jazz label." Theexperience altered Herzen's approach toher own music and she began intentionallyseeking only polyrhythmically oriented jazzand world music artists to perform in herband. During that time, she also launchedMotéma, initially as a platform to promoteher album. However, that goal expanded asHerzen's collaborator and percussionist

Belated Ovation for Pepper AdamsOne of jazz's overlooked gems, saxo-

phonist Pepper Adams spent his finalyears drafting his autobiography with jazzhistorian Gary Carner, an effort leftincomplete at the time of Adams' passing.

Babatunde Lea joined the artist roster in2003, followed soon after by pianist LynneArriale.

Initially, the experience was daunting."While I helped establish MCC, I hadn'tbeen in charge; I also had never worked ata record label. Learning to run the businessand marketing side of Motéma was a steeplearning curve," she admits. "But as we'vegrown, more and more amazing artistshave knocked on our door. I'm prettystunned by the array of talent that is withus now!" Indeed, from its humble begin-nings, Motéma enters its 10th anniversarysporting an extraordinary catalogue and areputation as one of today's primary forcesin jazz. Herzen is modest about the label'ssuccess. "There have been tough times,"she says. "However, I've hung in therebecause the music and the musicians neverfail to inspire me. Each day I'm leveragingthe energy of the artists and channeling itinto the label to make this work." For moreinformation on Motéma Music, visitwww.motema.com.

However, this month Carner, in collabora-tion with Scarecrow Press and withMotéma Music, will reintroduce the worldto Adams' life and music through therelease of the book Pepper Adams' JoyRoad: An Annotated Discography, pairedwith the digital album set Joy Road: TheComplete Works of Pepper Adams. Thisremarkable project extends far beyond tra-ditional compilations: Carner not onlyengaged contemporary artists—includingEric Alexander, Frank Basile and GarySmulyan—to record Adams' entire song-book, he also fulfilled Adams' wish to havelyrics set to his ballads, a task completed bypoet Barry Wallenstein. The book andalbum will be promoted through a 30-cityJoy Road release tour, which will stop inNew York September 24-30 and featureperformances by artists including—besideAlexander, Basile and Smulyan—JoeTemperley, Mike LeDonne, ArturoO'Farrill and Lew Tabackin at venuesthroughout the city. The brainchild of drummer AmauryAcosta and pianist Axel Tosca Laugart,(U)nity began playing together five yearsago. Thegroup logo reflects their global makeup asAcosta explains that "The 'U' is in paren-theses to represent one side for Manhattanand one side for Havana." Staying true totheir brand, they are currently working onarrangements of songs by Wayne Shorter,Jay-Z and Flying Lotus, among others. Howard Hirsch was Judy Garland's percussionist for fifteen years. He told me about aconcert in Syracuse when, during the overture, Johnny Bello began his trumpet solo on "Overthe Rainbow." The stagehands hadn't put a railing behind the brass section, and John's firsttwo notes were powerful enough to cause his chair to slip off the riser. John and his chair fellseveral feet, luckily landing on a large pile of electrical wires that broke the fall. The remark-able thing was that John never stopped playing. He finished his solo and climbed backonstage, where he received a round of applause from the orchestra.

Ahmad Jamal said, ''I once heard Ben Webster playing his heart out on a ballad. All of asudden he stopped. I asked him, 'Why did you stop, Ben?' He said, 'I forgot the lyrics.' ''

ln the British publication Jazz Journal International, a letter from a man in Flaxton read:“...almost fifty years ago I went into a leading bookshop and asked for the newly published“Kingdom of Swing” by Benny Goodman. The assistant, who was actually the manageress, replied, “Have you looked in the Golf section?”
