“Fredrick Levore isn’t a household name, but he knows his way around a song and is a dedicated vocalist who hits all the right notes. Over the years, he has developed a cool underground following [and] is a contender on the male jazz scene, which isn’t a very large pool to begin with”.

TWO PIANISTS WITH DEEP FEELINGSfor tradition, yet fearless in expanding the

frontiers of their art, are in this month'sWinning Spins spotlight. Besides their fullyassimilated knowledge of jazz history, the twoalso share a muscular approach to the piano andan ability to make it boom, ring and resonatepercussively. Yet they're close to a lifetime apartin age: Jason Moran is 35 and ChuchoValdés double that. Moreover, Moran is anative Texan, while Valdés is a Cuban who stillresides there. So Valdés deals with Afro-Cubanmusical traditions as well as jazz, while Moranis more inclined rhythmically towards hip-hopthan montuno.

Chucho's Steps (4Q) credited to ChuchoValdés and the Afro-Cuban Messengers, takes alively stroll through Afro-Latin rhythms whilealso referencing and paying homage to theleader's varied jazz influences. Valdés is bestknown here as one of the founders and leaders ofIrakere, the Cuban band that gave us PaquitoD'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. Valdés'Messengers is a smaller unit than that largeensemble, a sextet with trumpet, tenor sax, bass, drums and percussion. But the pianist isin command: leading, prodding, steering thedirections of the music when not soaring over it.

The abum opens with "Zawinul's Mambo," aningenious reworking of phrases and motivesfrom keyboardist Joe Zawinul's best-knownpiece from his Weather Report days, "Birdland."Other nods to jazz figures include "New Orleans(A Tribute to the Marsalis Family)," a tune thatmoves through 4/4 swing with Afro-Latin rhyth-mic accents plus a 6/8 second line bridge to apiano solo conjuring Jelly Roll Morton over cas-tanets and a polyphonic horns climax; and thetitle tune, a quicksilver sprint through chordchanges a la Coltrane's "Giant Steps" but givena suite-like form through shifting rhythms andtempos along the way.

"Danzon," wherein Carlos MiyaresHernandez's tenor sax is the sole horn, begins asa bolero ballad, includes a nostalgic interluderedolent of 1930s ballroom danzon, and findsValdés stretching out long lines over a cha-chaduring his expansive solo turn. "Both Sides"explores guanguanco and samba rhythms asValdés unleashes his formidable technique in adense piano solo full of block chords and rollingarpeggios. "Yansa" begins with Lazaro RiveroAlarcon's bass in a Mingus strumming mode, horn riffs adding to the feel as piano stabs andjabs its way into a fervid solo that yields tosingers chanting over Yoruba bata drums toOya, a deity of the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion.

There's a different religious accent to "Julian," achurchy soul-jazz feel with rollicking two-fistedpiano. And jazz piano styles intersect and weavelike aspects of "Begin the Beguine" and "LadyBe Good" in "Begin to Be Good," a clever mash-up of standards and pianistic approaches.

Ten (Blue Note) celebrates the tenthanniversary of Moran's trio, Bandwagon, withbassist Tarus Mateen and drummer NasheetWaits, a unit that has become one of the 21stcentury's most impressive, cohesive and nimblesmall jazz ensembles. The three musiciansinteract so fluidly that tempo, harmonic anddynamic shifts which would be jarring andabrupt in other bands seem organic and integralhere. In keeping with an anniversary theme, thealbum combines reflection (looking back) andexpansion (toward the future).

Moran revisits an early Bandwagon tunewith "Gangsterism Over 10 Years," exploringhip-hop rhythms, martial beats and cross cur-rents in shifting tempos. Teachers and influ-ences are remembered with Jackie Byard's "ToBob Vatel of Paris," which gives Moran a chanceto range from stride to Errol Garner-ish two-handed gestures; and "Play to Live," co-writtenby Moran with another of his mentors, AndrewHill, and imbued with Hill's sense of mysteriosoand free-floating time. A similar brooding, con-templative mood pervades Mateen's "The Subtle

JANE MONHEITBIRDLAND / OCTOBER 19-23When Monheit debuted on CD, she was still in her early 20s. Yet it was clear she hadan extraordinary voice, rich and pure with a clarity of tone more associated withBroadway than jazz, reminiscent of a young Barbra Streisand, if Streisand hadaspired to jazz. Monheit has sometimes relied too heavily on the grandeur of herinstrument. But on her new CD, Home (EmArcy), she embraces the personal and inti-mate side of jazz, eschewing the big gesture in favor of the telling small one. She alsoseems to be having more fun, i.e., the loose harmony duet with John Pizzarelli on "YouBelong to Me" and her wily, winking version of "Everything I've Got Belongs to You."It's another step on her path to the top of the jazz vocal sphere. GK

DAVE LIEBMAN BIG BANDIRIDIUM / OCTOBER 6One of the few "doublers" on tenor and soprano sax who's concentrated primarily onthe soprano for long periods, Liebman will be honored as a 2011 National Endowmentof the Arts Jazz Master. Over a four-decades-plus career, Liebman has played in smallgroups with Miles Davis, Chick Corea and Elvin Jones, as well as his own duos, com-bos and big bands. He's featured on two exceptional new orchestral albums, Quest forFreedom (Sunnyside) with longtime pianist partner Richie Beirach; and the FrankfurtRadio Big Band doing music written by Jim McNeely; and As Always (MAMA) withhis own big band. It's the latter ensemble being featured at Iridium. He's also appear-ing with the Manhattan School of Music's Chamber Jazz Ensemble at the school onOctober 14. GK

PROJECT TRIOSKIRBALL CENTER / OCTOBER 16Given this Brooklyn-based group's highly nondescriptive name - and the fact thatpress materials characterize their work as "high-octane chamber music" that "blursthe boundaries of classical," it's possible that their superb new eponymous CD on theHarmonyville Records label will escape the notice of Hot House readers. That'd beunfortunate. Gee, the All-Music Guide website even classifies this outfit as 'Pop-Rock"!But don't miss a chance to hear these three masterful players: "beatbox flutist" GregPattillo, cellist Eric Stephenson and bassist Peter Seymour. All have solid jazz cre-dentials and, as their YouTube clips demonstrate, are capable of swinging like crazy.Yet there's also a pleasing delicacy to much of their music, along with generous dosesof light-heartedness. PB

BILL WARECORNELIA STREET / OCTOBER 3If you relished the 90s recordings of the popular group called Jazz Passengers, youalready know vibraphonist Ware's work, since he was a charter JP member. Maybeyou caught that band last month when they launched a new Enja CD at the Standard.Bill gets a remarkable shimmering sound out of his electronic instrument, an oldDeagan on which he's replaced the pipes under the metal bars with pickups, resultingin some impressive harmonic touches. At this quartet gig at Cornelia Street, he'll bejoined by pianist Matt King, bassist Carl DeRosa and drummer Jamie Aff, guys withwhom he's often gigged at Puppets in Brooklyn. By the way, he'll return to the sameVillage venue on Oct. 8-9 to play with guitarist Rez Abassi's ensemble. PB

LENNIE CUJESMALLS / OCTOBER 15 AND 16If you Google Cuje, the first links popping up reference a one-time Nazi YouthMovement member born in 1933. A mistake? Incredibly, no. That same kid, whoattended a prestigious German music school during WW II, discovered jazz throughGIs and, at 15, emigrated to America, where seeing Lionel Hampton at the ApolloTheater so impressed him he took up vibes. Cuje lived in the Washington area, wherehe still resides, and after playing in New York during the 1960s, he returned to thecapital area and has become a fixture on the local scene, adapting his Hamp-influ-enced sound to bebop's intricacies. Smalls' Spike Wilner played with Cuje in Baltimoreand has been bringing him to Smalls in the Village since he (Wilner) took it over. GK

RAFI MALKIEL92ND STREET Y / OCTOBER 22A trombone and euphonium specialist, Jerusalem-born Malkiel is also a gifted compos-er and arranger whose talents are especially prominent on Water, a new Tzadik albumfeaturing his ten-member ensemble playing original pieces that simultaneously reflectharmonic and rhythmic elements from both the Middle East and Latin America. Ratherthan a mish-mash, it's actually a beautifully conceived listening experience that artful-ly incorporates bits of cumbia, reggae, flamenco, traditional Jewish melodies and eventhe sounds of running water. For this no-charge concert - and for an Oct. 31 BrooklynLyceum appearance - Malkiel will utilize a pared-down ensemble that also includeflute, piano, bass and percussion. PB

MICHAEL WEISSKITANO / OCTOBER 1 AND 2Weiss will program these evenings as a tribute to Hank Jones and Tommy Flanagan, two pianists in the Bud Powell tradition whom he regards as special inspirations.Backing him will be bassist George Mraz, who played bass behind Flanagan for years, and Dennis Mackrel, at one time a member of Jones' trio. Set lists will likely includetunes written by Hank's brother Thad. Weiss is himself a largely unheralded keyboardhero whose comping and soloing behind an earlier generation of great beboppers (e.g.Johnny Griffin, Bill Hardman and Junior Cook) has inspired lots of even youngerpianists. Michael's 2003 septet CD Soul Journey (Sintra), full of great Weiss originals, was one of the last decade's most thoroughly exciting and original albums. PB

LOSTON HARRISBEMELMANS BAR / TUESDAYS THRU SATURDAYSThe Carlyle Hotel is indelibly associated with cabaret because of the late Bobby Short'slengthy stints at Cafe Carlyle. But the hotel also houses one of the Apple's classiestpiano bars, where jazz often meets cabaret on an equal footing. Pianist-singer LostonHarris, who's resumed primary late-night residency there, isn't your typical loungepianist. His keyboard style is lean - Nat "King" Cole with the spareness of Count Basie- and pivots on swing, not swooping arpeggios. His singing is slyly conspiratorial, witha dry, husky edge. His new CD, Why Try To Change Me Now, pulls off the rare feat ofpersonalizing songs associated with Sinatra. It also features musicians who often joinhim at Bemelmans Bar: trumpeter Marcus Parsly; guitarist Ron Affif and bassistChris Berger. GK

BOBBY WATSONDIZZY'S / SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 3An important voice on alto sax since he burst onto the scene with Art Blakey's JazzMessengers during the late 70s, Bobby Watson is one of the few hard- and post-boppersalso carrying on the traditions of pre-Parker altoists. For example, he's paid tribute toJohnny Hodges in an album, channeling Hodges' rich romanticism on ballads and hisfervid vocalizing on blues. Watson's new album, Gates BBQ Suite (Lafiya Music),recorded with the UM-KC Concert Jazz Orchestra (which he leads as the school's direc-tor of jazz studies) is a rich evocation of the Kansas City heritage. There will be plentyof swing at this gig too, as Watson fronts his Horizon quintet with Victor Lewis, drums;Terell Stafford, trumpet; Ed Simon, piano; and Essiet Essiet, bass. GK

GARY BURTONBLUE NOTE / OCTOBER 19-24Although Burton's gift for melodic improvisation and his unmatched four-mallet facili-ty have enriched recordings by Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and a boatload ofother notables, he seems to have a particular fondness for groups that include gui-tarists. Over the years, he's utilized Pat Metheny, Mick Goodrick, John Scofield, LarryCoryell and Kurt Rosenwinkel to great musical effect. His latest guitar inspiration, though, has come from young Julian Lage, with whom he's recorded since Generations(2004) and Next Generation (2005). Julian will be present during these six Blue Noteevenings, along with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez, for this four-some's North American debut. You can also catch Burton doing a Q&A beginning at4:00 PM at Barnes & Noble's 86th store on Oct. 22. PB

CAROLYN LEONHART AND WAYNE ESCOFFERYWILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY / OCTOBER 31Raised on Manhattan's Upper West Side as the daughter of bassist Jay Leonhart,Carolyn acquired a degree in comparative religions, subsequently worked with ahip hop band, and has been singing backup for Steely Dan for the past eight years.Along the way, she placed third in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal JazzCompetition. She and her much-acclaimed saxophonist husband Wayne make quitea pairing. Originally a student of Jackie McLean's, he's already recorded with TomHarrell, Ben Riley and various Mingus Legacy groups, as well as a leader himself.A new Savant CD entitled Tides Of Yesterday beautifully showcases Carolyn andWayne together on a mixture of standards and originals. Their bluesy treatment ofDonald Fagan's "Big Noise, New York" is a particular delight.

DANILO PEREZNJPAC / OCTOBER 16Born in Panama in 1965, this pianist has, for the last decade, served as a culturalambassador for his homeland, as well as the moving force behind the annualPanama Jazz Festival. A Berklee grad, he first attracted the spotlight during 1989-1992 as the youngest member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra. He'scurrently part of Wayne Shorter's Grammy-winnning quartet and was heard togreat effect on Wayne's wildly popular Alegria and Footprints Live CDs. Danilo'sown recent Providencia (Mack Avenue), inspired by the births of his two daughters, offers an eleven-track suite of globally conscious music that fuses elements fromjazz, classical and Latin American folk material. On it, he enjoys sterling supportfrom bassist Ben Street and percussionist Adam Cruz.

RONI BEN-HURCECIL'S / OCTOBER 9When guitarist Ben-Hur arrived in New York in 1985, he unwittingly paved theway for an entire generation of other Israeli jazz players to do the same. Early on,he achieved his dream of studying with one of his idols, pianist Barry Harris. Barry,in turn, honored Roni by backing him on his debut CD, Backyard. Now Roni has sixrecordings as leader under his belt. His most recent for the Motema label, Fortuna,is typically uplifting. Roni's sensitive feel for bossa nova should come as no surprise, given his roots that trace back to Tunisia and the Moors. It's a musical genre resem-bling the traditional Sephardic songs this passionate leader, player, composer, arranger, author and educator grew up hearing at home.

DAN BARRETTBICKFORD THEATER / OCTOBER 19Back by popular demand, after a stunning performance at that Morristown venuelast year, Barrett is one of the most admired trad and mainstream trombonistsaround. His talents are readily apparent on a long string of albums cut for theConcord, Arbors Records and Nagel-Heyer labels. On them, he's resurrected suchlittle-heard chestnuts as "Victory Stride," "Sweet Substitute" and "My Mother'sEyes." Regarding his signature sound, he puts it this way: "I always try to singthrough my horn, like Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster and especially LouisArmstrong used to." To this end, he's become a true master of the "vocal" effectsachieveable only through deft use of a plunger mute. Now based on the West Coast,Barrett gigs in this area don't occur as often as we'd like. Joining him will be cor-netist Dan Tobias, pianist Rossano Sportiello, bassist Frank Tate and drummer Kevin Dorn.

FROM THE EARLIEST DAYS OF JAZZ,certain players have stood out and set the

standard for how a particular instrumentshould sound. On alto saxophone, luminariesfrom Johnny Hodges and Charlie Parker toCannonball Adderley and Ornette Colemanraised the bar high and inspired countless musi-cians and listeners. In recent years, a high-levelbuzz has been building about another alto play-er with a unique sound, Bunky Green.

Bunky isn't a youthful sensation straight outof the conservatory. At 75, he's been playing altofor well over a half century. But he has appearedin New York fewer than a handful of times dur-ing the past four decades, and released just overa dozen albums, most of them prior to 1985. Thatvintage Green vinyl is cherished by his devotees, who enjoy pulling it out and turning on theuninitiated.

"A lot of younger players have listened to mymusic and developed their own styles," he says.Among them are such well-regarded saxophon-ists as Steve Coleman, Greg Osby and RudreshMahanthappa, who don't stop at singing theolder alto player's praises. Instead, they play hiscompositions, record with him and get him outon the road from time to time. "Rudresh is every-where. He keeps a fire under me," Bunky sayswith a laugh. The two have just released a newCD, Apex, on the Pi label.

So who is this man and why are people say-ing such nice things about him? The Milwaukee-born Vernice "Bunky" Green grew up with analto in hand. "There was no music school in myday," he says. "I listened to the best players inthe neighborhood and tried to emulate them.Growing up, I listened to music in the street. That's the best way to get the message." By 17,he could transcribe and play all of CharlieParker's solos. By the early 1960s, Bunky wasliving in New York, becoming friendly withCannonball, and hanging in a hotel with JohnColtrane, listening and learning while the tenoricon prepared for the Giant Steps recording ses-sions. Bunky was awarded the good jazz- mak-ing seal of approval when bassist Charles

Mingus brought him into his band after thedeparture of Jackie McLean. However, accordingto his manager, Nick Venti, a family issue cameup while Bunky was on the road with Mingus, and he left the band in Chicago to help resolve it.

He stayed in the area and started giggingwith the likes of Yusef Lateef, Andrew Hill, IraSullivan and Sonny Stitt, and also made a hand-ful of recordings as leader. At the time, Bunkywas working on a lot of original material, butmany players were focusing on standards and"didn't want to try anything different." With hisalbum Places We've Never Been, "A lot of thingsI'd been hearing in my head crystallized andcame together," he says. "I wasn't thinking ofabandoning tonality, but I was interested in ten-sion and release, letting things clash so therelease was more gratifying. I was using harmo-ny to create illusion, going out of the ballparkthen turning around and coming back to stan-dard harmonies."

The album "didn't get much airplay."Eventually, "I dropped out of the scene to teach,"says Bunky, who was hired by Chicago StateUniversity in the early 1970s. "I found that Ienjoyed sharing the knowledge with young peo-ple. It's a way to keep the music going." Hestayed in Chicago till 1989, then began teachingat the University of North Florida inJacksonville, where he's now the director of jazzstudies.

Giving up the rigors of touring gave Bunkytime and energy to devote to his students and toworking on his own music. "I practice everyminute of my waking hours," he says. When hissax isn't near at hand, "I run phrases in myhead constantly. I'm always kind of humming tomyself, looking like I'm a little nuts. You mightsay I'm possessed. You have to be, to stay at thetop of your form."

He views the whole world as a resource forhis music. Inspirations from classical and worldmusic to small Eastern-style bagpipes to game-lan bells find their way into his compositions."Music is where you find it. It's you that makesthe difference."

Bunky encourages his students to have thesame openness. "Don't be a person who walksaround with blinders because your teacher toldyou what's important. Don't be a replica. Thatdoes nothing for me or for the music. Be a voice,"he says. "You have to get outside the walls of theuniversity to learn more about the music.Otherwise, it can be so contained that it'sinsipid. You can't go out and buy soul. Thatwon't work. Play and be free. That makes yougrow. If you're right there in the moment, impro-vising, playing the music with great players, that spurs you to try harder and to grow."

Over the past four years, Bunky has beenspending more time on the road. "I've been expe-riencing a personal renaissance and people arebecoming aware of me," the alto player says."Things are happening fast." After decades offocusing on education, he's moving out of theclassroom and into the limelight.

Alto saxophonists Bunky Green andRudresh Mahanthappa celebrate therelease of Apex at Jazz Standard on Oct. 14-17. The band includes Jason Moran onpiano, Francois Moutin on bass andDamion Reid on drums.

ALTHOUGH TENOR SAXOPHONE ANDflute player Frank Wess is 88, he's sharper

than many people half his age. He easily recitesnames and dates and tells stories from decadesago as if they occurred just yesterday. The cozyfront room in Wess' Midtown apartment servesas office, practice room and kitchen. His tenorsits in a stand, the strap draped over its neck, ready for daily practice. "When you get old," hesaid, "you got to play every day."

Yes, age has taken a toll. These days, Wesswalks with a cane and he doesn't see as well ashe used to. "I've tried to take care of myself," hesaid. "But people don't understand how hard it isto travel. Sometimes you don't have time to eat;you just get out of the bus and start playing. Butyou have to stay out there. Otherwise, you're notgoing to make it."

Wess has indeed "made it." In 2007, he waspresented with the prestigious NEA JazzMasters Award; and this month, the JazzMinistry at St. Peter's Church will honor him attheir 40th All Nite Soul extravaganza. TheVanguard Jazz Orchestra will be among themany notable performers featured, and a photosexhibit will chronicle his life.

Wess was born in a hotbed of jazz, KansasCity, and grew up in Oklahoma, which was hometo an inordinate number of jazz greats. Wess rat-tled off the list: Don Byas, Dick Wilson, ChetBaker, Aaron Bell, Conrad Herwig, Earl Bostic,Wardell Gray, Oscar Pettiford, Jay McShannand Cecil McBee. Most were his contemporariesand all, except for Herwig and McBee, are gone.Asked if it was something in the water, or per-haps a great teacher, Frank replies with a laugh,"I don't guess there's much else to do out there."

Frank picked up the alto when he was tenbut he grew tired of concert band music andstopped playing for a year. When he was thir-teen, his family moved to Washington D.C. andhe enrolled in Dunbar High School where BillyTaylor and other students had jam sessions atlunchtime. "When I heard that, I said, 'That'ssomething that I want to do!' I got my horn outagain, had it overhauled and went back to work."

Frank was playing in a small group thatpracticed at The Jungle Inn. "The owner, MissLyle, let us rehearse there," he recalls, and whenJelly Roll Morton came to Washington, he'd staywith her. He used to play with us and critiqueus, you know. He was something else. Accordingto him, he did everything. He was one of themost egotistical people I've ever run into in mylife. One day, Jelly Roll was sitting in with usand I made a mistake or something and he said,'Hey, boy, where are you from?' He knew I was-n't from there by my accent. I said 'I'm fromOklahoma.' And he said, 'Look, there's only oneman who came from Oklahoma who could playthe saxophone and I taught him, so you can for-get it. You ain't never going to play the saxo-phone!'" Asked if he was hurt, Frank says, "Hell,I didn't pay him no mind."

THE NON-RETIRING

FRANK WESSBy Yvonne Ervin

While Frank was practicing one day afterschool, the band's pianist, John Malachi, toldhim that what he was playing sounded like hewas hearing the tenor sax. Frank soon traded inhis brand-new alto for a tenor. "It seems like assoon as I got the tenor, I started working," hesaid.

Wess graduated from high school at fifteenand began studying music in college, even as hegigged around the D.C. area. Soon, he had asteady gig with Bill Baldwin's dance band and,by nineteen, he was working in a theater pitband for $35 a week, a handsome sum. When hewas subsequently drafted, he knew a bandmas-ter who was recruiting professional musicians."If you joined the army with him, you didn'thave to take basic training and you got a rating,Private First Class Specialist Fourth. You didn'thave to do nothing but make music," remembersFrank, who made it to Sergeant. "That soundedall right to me."

After army service, Wess attended theModern School of Music in D.C. and played onlylocal gigs for five years. He studied flute withmembers of the National Symphony and theMetropolitan Opera orchestra, eventually earn-ing his Bachelors of Music degree. All the while,Count Basie had been phoning periodically, urg-ing Wess to come on the road with him, butFrank was determined to finish school.

When he finally did tour with Basie, in 1953,he stayed with that orchestra for eleven years. Many of Basie's sidemen had similarly longtenures. "Basie knew what he was doing," Wesssays. "You can't have a band if you have differ-ent personnel every six months. Cats have tostay together long enough so they know eachother. Whether they like each other, that doesn'tmatter.

"Basie always wanted a third alto chair whocould play lead so he'd always have a lead altoplayer," Wess said explaining why he switchedfrom tenor back to his original horn "I changedto alto because he knew I could play."

After Don Redman told Basie about Frank'stalents on flute, Basie let him solo on flute when-ever he wanted. "That was the thing that Basiedid," Wess said. "He'd hire cats that could dowhat he needed done and he'd let you do it. Henever rehearsed the band. He'd just sit back andlisten. Thad Jones, Marshall Royal, me andeverybody else rehearsed the band."

During Wess' tenure with Basie, his soloingon flute grew increasingly popular and he beganwinning Down Beat popularity polls for theinstrument. When trumpeter Snooky Young andbassist Eddie Jones left the band at the sametime, Wess decided to accept an offer to go toNew York and work with Sammy Davis, Jr. He'sremained a New Yorker since 1964, doing studiowork on sax and flute, leading his own bandsand working as a sideman, most notably co-lead-ing a two-tenor band with his longtime Basiecolleague, Frank Foster.

Retirement in Frank Wess' future? "Whatwould I retire to?" he asks. "I've never done any-thing else, never even sold a newspaper!"

Frank Wess is the honoree at SaintPeter's Church during its All-Nite Soulevent, which begins at 7:00 PM on Oct. 10.At least eighty other musicians will join inthe celebration.

"I don't sing, it's a bad idea.I could clear out a room," she says with a laugh.Mimi started out on drums at age 9, but realizedearly on "guitar was the voice I wanted. The gui-tar has a very personal expression. There'ssomething physical and personal about holdinga guitar, it feels almost human." She still owns adrum kit, and often uses it while teaching. "Allserious instrumentalists have to have theirrhythm s*** together, and I'm glad for thatbackground," Mimi says. Studying drums"makes me more fluid and interesting on guitar."Interplay between guitar and drums keeps themusic “exciting to listen to and broadens thescope of what you think the instruments wouldbe doing." Mimi has a new DVD out, Live at thePalladium! She enjoyed the relaxed atmosphereof recording live. "I respond to the give and takewith the audience. I get fired up by that and itbrings out a different side of my musicality. It'simmediate and compelling in a different waythat the studio." The Big Apple native is excitedabout her Oct. 5 gig at the Jazz Standard. "I getpumped up whenever I'm coming back to NewYork, it's always a pleasure. I'm a type-A personwith lots of energy. New York throws me intooverdrive. It's so exciting, there's so much to do."

Bass is the placeBassist/composer/singer Brandi Disterheftcounts Charles Mingus among her heroes. "Hismusic is joyous and moving, it has a party mood,a celebratory mood that makes you want todance, in a quirky way," she says. "Mingus wasnot scared to take chances or standing out. He's an inspiration to me to just be

myself, to let things loose and just create."Besides Mingus, the compositions on Brandi'snew CD, Second Side (Justin Time), wereinspired by the likes of Joni Mitchell, MiltonNascimento, Simon and Garfunkel, Miles Davisand Jackie McLean. The music was written andrecorded "during an interesting time in my life,"she says. "The first song sets a theme of don'tworry, everything's going to work out as itshould, and I felt at ease." Brandi comes from amusical family: her mother plays piano, her auntsings and her father works in the business.Early on, Brandi's bass chops earned positivecomments from no less than Oscar Peterson, who compared her playing to Ray Brown's. "Itwas humbling, and inspired me to keep wood-shedding," she says. Brandi is studying withanother great, Ron Carter. "He's the opposite ofMingus," she says. "Being a female playing bass, sometimes you make up for being a female bybeing aggressive on bass. So now I'm working ona big, warm sound, and Ron Carter expects noth-ing less than perfection." Brandi's been busytranscribing Art Tatum's music, "It's beautiful toplay on bass." She'll be playing Tatum, musicfrom her two CDs and more at Dizzy's on Oct.19.

"Songs don't get old, butsometimes they need a facelift." Kelley enjoysworking with pianist John Hansen, her husbandand long-time collaborator. "He smoothes outthe rough edges of what I do. "Our last CD, Home, was a big project.Everything was thought out. It's time for some-thing live, something flowy, something I alwayslove to do." JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with manyinteresting photos and links.

When Joe Wilder went to Philadelphia to participate in a jazz clinic, the organiz-ers put him up at a good hotel. The young lady at the desk said, "We have a suite for you onthe fifteenth floor. Will that be satisfactory?" Joe gave her a glum look and said, "I don'tknow... my doctor told me to stay away from sweets." Joe said it took the girl a long minuteto figure it out.

In the last year of his life, Spike Robinson was featured in the UK with a groupthat called itself "Young Lions, Old Tigers." Spike was about forty years older than the othermusicians, who liked to tease him about his "senility." At a gig at the Concorde Club, theleader called a less familiar number which made Spike reach for his glasses and beginthumbing through the music book. As he waited, the leader whispered, "They're in alpha-betical order." Spike replied, "That's OK, but I can't remember the damned alphabet!"

A Moment You Missed by Fran KaufmanHot House Contributing Photographer

When our colleague, Fred McIntosh, gives a party, you can bet the music and the guests will be great. At his August's event, Lou Donaldson had a con-versation with Dick Meldonian (center) and trom-bone great Eddie Bert. Bert played with Monk,Mingus, and Hawkins, among others during hisseven decade-long career. Meldonian remindedLou that he had heard him play 50 years ago."Must have been my father," quipped Donaldsonwithout missing a beat.

WINNING SPINS...continued from page 10One." No younger pianist has internalizedThelonious Monk as Moran has, and his"Crepescule with Nellie" here is a triumph ofinterpretation as uniquely personal as it isutterly true to Monk. Like Monk, Moran hasmastered the use of space, tonal variety andevincing plangency from the piano. There's alsoa trio of consecutive tracks showcasing thegroup's contemplative side; along with a con-cluding "Old Babies" that mixes in the voices ofMoran's two infant sons with his piano in theintro and - after a minute-plus silence - becomesa fetching, bright lullaby where the band blendsfree passages and a jingly melody with quotesfrom "I Don't Wanna Walk Without You" in acaptivating finale.

Chucho Valdés performs at Jazz atLincoln Center's Allen Room on October22-23. Jason Moran & Bandwagon appearat the Village Vanguard on October 5-10.
