THE TENOR SAXOPHONE CONTINUESto be one of the dominant voices in jazz. In

this Winning Spins, we look at a pair of post-Coltrane tenors, one who emerged in the 1990s,the other coming to the fore in this first decadeof the 21st Century. Yet it is the younger one,Brandon Wright, who adheres more to the tradi-tions of hard-bop than the elder, MarcMommaas, whose approach is more adventur-ous, even ethereal. Format follows function andconception here too, with Wright fronting a tra-ditional quintet/quartet and Mommaas optingfor a loose trio/quartet group joined by guitar(s)and drum kit. Moreover, on both CDs, the cre-ative contributions of the percussionistsinvolved are crucial to their artistic success.

On Landmarc (Sunnyside), Marc Mommaasuses the same instrumentation as the long-established trio of Paul Motian, Joe Lovano andBill Frisell without aping that drums-tenor-gui-tar grouping's signature sound. In particularlyilluminating comments accompanying the CD,Mommaas states: "The concept is about inde-pendence of time, with the sole purpose ofwidening the gates towards a deeper form ofinteraction and storyline development. It is theartist's mission to develop and protect [the conceptof] freedom and to express the contrasts of life."

Four of the tracks on the CD feature thebasic trio: Mommaas' tenor sax, Tony Moreno'sdrums, and Nate Bradley's electric guitar. Threetracks add guitarist Vic Juris, while RezAbassi’s guitar or electric sitar join in on twoothers. Moreno, often employing brushes, is asmuch a probing yet elusive shadow rather thana mere time or rhythm keeper. Without abassist, the whole concept of rhythm becomesfreer and more spontaneous. As Mommaas says, interaction and storyline are at the fore, themusicians achieving a sensitive dynamic rap-port led by Mommaas' emphasis on intimacy, hisnotes and phrases subtle breaths as much astones, the volume turned down, fluctuatingbetween low and whisper.

Most of the pieces (all Mommaas originals)are episodic in structure, with second strains,(quiet) shout choruses and other compositionaldevices breaking up the solo orders. The morecomplex ones recall Lennie Tristano's elabora-tions of standards and bebop, though they aremuch less rhythmically regimented. Mommaas'serpentine, legato solos conjure up memories ofWarne Marsh. While the trio tracks are veryfine, the quartet numbers, employing contrast-ing guitars - Juris' harp-like on "Folksong";Abassi's sitar pealing pedal points on the con-stantly morphing "Cassavetes Caravan" - take

the music to the highest levels of engaging cre-ativity. This is one album where repeated hear-ings yield new facets every time.

Brandon Wright's new Boiling Point (Posi-Tone) bears an apt title for a debut album thatroils and roars in the post-bop/hard-bop mode.Wright boasts a brawny, coruscating tenor tone,a commendable sense of dramatic climax in hissolos, and an even more admirable avoidance ofclichés. He's surrounded himself with assertivesidemen: the crackling trumpet of Alex Sipiagin(on four of the eight tracks), emphatic pianistDave Kikoski, deep-groove bassist HansGlawischnig, and always-inventive drummerMatt Wilson, who can find new wrinkles in eventhe most familiar hard-bop grooves.

Wright's originals (five of the eight tunes)are more than serviceable, borrowing strategies(like forms beyond blues and AABA) from thebooks of Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter, andthe three "standards" are diverse. "Here's ThatRainy Day" is mostly a piano-sax duet with agorgeous tenor coda; "You're My Everything"

LAUREL MASSÉST. FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH/MAY 8Ms. Massé, a founding member of Manhattan Transfer who was part of thatquartet during its first seven years, long ago embarked on a solo careerthat's melded her warm flexible voice and obvious feeling for jazz with akeen interest in things spiritual. At this newly restored Chelsea church, she'll join pianist Aaron Diehl's trio, guest saxist Victor Goines and a 40-voice choir in commemorating the centennial of Mary Lou Williams' birth. The concert will benefit St. Francis Xavier's programs in aid of the hungryand homeless. Mary Lou, whom converted to Catholicism in her later yearsand composed music especially for performance at this church, would surelyapprove. PB

ODEAN POPEBLUE NOTE/MAY 20-23One of last year's lustiest jazz CDs was Odean's List (In Out), on whichtenor saxophonist - and Max Roach alumnus - Odean Pope took a brawny,sax-heavy approach. But the rousing ensemble (three tenors, two trumpetsand rhythm) and driving solos weren't the only attraction, as evidenced byPope's coda duet improv with bassist Lee Smith on "Say It Over and OverAgain." Walter Blanding and James Carter were his fellow saxophonists onthat album. But the lineup of this gig featuring Pope's flexible (up to eightat times) Saxophone Choir is TBA, although Joe Lovano is featured guest forthe first two nights, Ravi Coltrane for the second two. GK

RICK STONEBAR NEXT DOOR/MAY 7There's Rick sitting in his own Brooklyn backyard, chatting about how hedoes what he does. For the lowdown, check the video newly posted at guitarkadia.com. A facile guitarist with a keen bop focus who's too little knownbeyond local clubs, he's most readily enjoyable on Samba Do Novembro, asplendid quartet CD issued under the Jazzand imprint a half-dozen yearsago. It includes several Stone originals (e.g. "Duck, Duck, Blues" and theultra-catchy title tune) worthy of entering the standard repertoire. At BarNext Door, he'll be backed by longtime henchmen Dave Kingsnorth on bassand Tom Pollard behind the drumset. Or hear him at the Garage on May 13with Sean Smith and Sylvia Cuenca. PB

BILL MOBLEYSMOKE/MAY 6, 13, 20 AND 27We've long admired Mobley's work as both lead trumpeter and arranger. He's a fine improviser, too, as borne out by the tracks on MoodScape, hissublime 2007 quartet CD on which he enjoys great backing from MulgrewMiller, a fellow Memphis-area native. But it's as a bandleader that he's shin-ing each Thursday at Smoke, fronting a crew of top New York players. It's acomfortable space for him. Performances by his large ensemble, recordedthere in 1997, are among the highlights of his discography. Opportunities forthis all-star band to tour beyond Manhattan are limited, so any chance tohear them close to home is welcome. PB

NNENNA FREELONDIZZY'S/MAY 11-16Freelon always has her own unique take on a song, whether she's singingtunes popularized by Billie Holiday or performing the music of DukeEllington with classical diva Harolyn Blackwell. Freelon exudes the sense ofbeing musically at home in her own skin. That's the theme of her new record-ing, Homefree (Concord), which she'll be focusing on during this CD releasegig. It includes material from the singer's repertoire, ranging from "TheTheme from the Valley of the Dolls" to "America the Beautiful." There arealso some standards mixed in, and an original, "Cell Phone Blues," Freelon'spaean to her love/hate relationship with that 21st-century necessity. EK

JOAN STILESIRIDIUM/MAY 12A fluent improvisor, as well as a composer of distinction, Stiles sits comfort-ably in the piano lineage that includes Cole, Powell, Jones and Flanagan. Allthose talents are apparent on Hurly Burly, a terrific Zoho CD on which shepays tribute to Mary Lou Williams' legacy with a couple of distinctiveWilliams originals ("Knowledge" and "In the Land of the Oo-Bla-Dee") plusher own title number; then somehow mashes together tunes by Monk andJohnny Hodges into an amusing little surprise called "The Brilliant Cornersof Thelonious' Jumpin' Jeep." Several of that album's participants, includingsaxophonists Steve Wilson and Joel Frahm, will also be present at Iridium. Aswill we. PB

KURT ELLINGALLEN ROOM/MAY 14 AND 15One of the era's most admired vocal personalities, Elling returns to the sameperformance space where his widely acclaimed Dedicated To You project forthe Sunnyside label was recorded two Januarys ago. For those sets, he rein-terpreted several of the numbers Johnny Hartman sang (with backing byColtrane's quartet) on a landmark 1962 LP, along with a few other balladsthat Coltrane loved to play on. Expect much of the same fine material thistime. Elling's appearances are an intoxicating mixture of the dramatic andsoulful. These two evenings, for which Elling shares top billing with accor-dionist Richard Galliano, will likely sell out. Got tix already? PB

DIEGO URCOLAJAZZ STANDARD/APRIL 29-MAY 2Trumpeter Diego Urcola likes to bring some of the flavor of his nativeArgentina's tango into his playing. But he is truly a jazzman for all occasions, having played in big bands like the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and theDizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, as well as in groups led by tenor saxo-phonists Jimmy Heath and Joe Henderson. He's been a member of theCaribbean Jazz Project since 2004, and can be heard adding brassy fire to fel-low Argentinean (saxophonist) Oscar Feldman's fine new CD, Oscar Y Familia(Sunnyside). At this gig he'll be joining the sextet of Paquito D'Rivera, inwhose bands he's been featured since 1991. GK

KARRIN ALLYSONBIRDLAND/MAY 18-22Allyson's life in music kicked off with classical piano lessons, then segued intofolk music and eventually included a brief tenure with an all-female rockband. For close to two decades, however, Allyson has been singing jazz in atleast six languages, counting vocalese, and swinging like mad on piano whileshe's at it. She has a dozen recordings under her belt at last count, mostrecently By Request: The Best of Karrin Allyson (Concord). Expect her set toinclude a nice mix of material, since she's right at home covering works bycomposers from Mose Allison to Jacques Brel to John Coltrane, in addition toher own originals. EK

GEORGE COLLIGANSMALLS/MAY 5There's loads of George on CD. His keyboard work has enhanced performancesby Steve Wilson, Cassandra Wilson, Robin Eubanks, Ravi Coltrane and a hostof other leaders - so often, in fact, that it's easy to regard Colligan as merely atalent-rich sideman. But his own trio work merits attention and praise. ComeTogether (Sunnyside), cut in 2008, finds him stepping well outside the conven-tional, beautifully meshing complex cross-rhythms and even venturing intoBad Plus territory on a couple of cuts. For this Smalls evening, he's recruitedbassist Josh Ginsburgh and percussionist E.J. Strickland. (George will alsoplay drums at the club on May 7, as part of his pianist wife Kerry Politzer'sthreesome. Or catch this couple at Cornelia Street on May 28.) PB

NEW JERSEY JAZZ

Stryker Slagle photo by Jimmy Katz

RIO CLEMENTEMAYO CENTER/MAY 2"The Bishop of Jazz" - that's what they call him. This New Jersey native isnot only a powerhouse pianist; he's also a composer, arranger and educatorof note. Combine his strong classical music background and his vast knowl-edge of jazz history with a rare passion for exciting audiences and you havea genuine crowd-pleaser. This evening at the Mayo Center in Morristownwill also be enriched by performances by two other top keyboard stylists,Tomoko Ohno and Jerry Vezza. As a result, expect some duo and trio num-bers. Meanwhile, check out the recent Rio Plays Fascinating Rhythms: ACentennial Celebration of George Gershwin.

GREGORY GENERETSHANGHAI JAZZ/MAY 16Baritone Generet (affectionately known to many as "Monsieur") is a welcome addi-tion to the scene. For one thing, he's not locked into any particular style of musicand seems equally comfortable with ballads, swingers and slow blues. He'll tell youthat he began developing his vocal chops on the stoops of the Brooklyn 'hood wherehe grew up. Later, in college, he tuned in on such distinctive stylists as BillyEckstine, Johnny Hartman and Jon Hendricks. More recently, he's performed onstages in France and Italy - and sold out shows at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. His debutrecording, 2009's (Re)Generet-ion on his own Monsieur label, offers a pretty fair rep-resentation of his considerable talents.

STRYKER-SLAGLE BANDUNION COUNTY PAC/MAY 14This dynamic duo has been making music together since 1985, during the periodwhen alto saxophonist Steve Slagle was working as a sideman with celebratedorganist Brother Jack McDuff. Guitarist Dave Stryker put in some road time withMcDuff as well, and has also backed Stanley Turrentine and Kevin Mahogany;while Slagle’s resumé includes associations with Charlie Haden, MiltonNascimento and Stevie Wonder. Dave and Steve often guest on one another'salbums. We really liked the sound of them together as co-leaders on a 2005 Zohodisc entitled Live at the Jazz Standard. Their latest disc Keeper, on the PanoramaRecords label will likely win the pair a passle of new admirers. For this Rahwayconcert, they enjoy support from two of the best: bassist Ed Howard and drummerVictor Lewis.

BETTY LISTETRUMPETS/MAY 27Ms. Liste, who's been running Trumpets' monthly Singers Jams, has alsobeen co-leading (with trumpeter Ted Curson) a band at the club's popularSunday brunches. Out of this fruitful longtime collaboration came the ideafor an album called Pensive Moments. On the disc, she demonstrates herkeyboard talents on "Stolen Moments" and a bunch of other carefully cho-sen numbers, including a catchy original entitled "Jazz Waltz." Vets KevinMcCarthy (bass) and Billy Hart (percussion), along with Ted, beautifullyround out the band. Hopefully, this CD will spread the good news aboutBetty well beyond Montclair.

IS THERE ANYONE ON THE PLANETconversant with jazz who doesn't already

know about Billy Taylor? Mentored early on byDuke Ellington and Willy "The Lion" Smith, thearticulate, ever-cordial Dr. Billy recorded withStuff Smith and Ben Webster in the 40s, servedas Birdland's house pianist during the early-50s,co-founded New York's long-running Jazzmobileinitiative, introduced good music to millions onWBAI-FM and CBS television and actuallyearned that doctorate. Throughout the decades,he's also remained one of the most dependablyswinging pianists on the scene.

Meanwhile, as a scholarship student at a pro-gressive private high school in Harlem, JackKleinsinger produced his very first jazz concertin 1952 by talking the administration into let-ting him arrange an assembly program with theBilly Taylor Trio. "When I was growing up, Iloved jazz musicians," Kleinsinger says. "Theywere characters, heroes, like sports stars."

That presentation featured guitarist GeneBertoncini as a "surprise guest," a concept Jackcarried into the Highlights in Jazz series hestarted twenty-one years later. In 1973, Jackthen an assistant attorney general for New YorkState, initiated what has turned out to be NewYork's longest-running jazz series. Now, afterthirty-seven years and three-hundred concerts,Highlights in Jazz has come to the end of theroad.

Kleinsinger's series began at the WestVillage's Lucille Lortel Theater, where he soldout his first two shows. The following year, heshifted proceedings to the Astor Place Theaterbefore settling for fifteen years at NYU. He nextmoved things to Pace University - and for thepast several years, he's been presenting music atthe Borough of Manhattan Community College'sTribeca Performing Arts Center. He says he'salways been drawn to academic settings becausetheir venues are generally the right size for hisshows. What's more, they offer chances to reachto younger people, something, he admits, that'sbeen hard to do. "I've tried discounted tickets, even free tickets, but still usually draw only ahandful of serious jazz students from Rutgers,NYU and the New School."

As a result, Highlights in Jazz audienceshave continued to age. And his season ticketsales plummeted in 2008, due to the economy.Over the years, Kleinsinger's non-profit organi-zation has come close to breaking even with tick-et sales, the occasional grant, and individualcontributions. Jack reports that he'd oftendonate $1,000 or so from his own pocket to makeup the difference. But then the losses began tohit the tens of thousands. "So this is it,"Kleinsinger says, "though I'd keep it going if Igot a funding or something to make thingswork." His series has been supported in the pastby grants from the New York State Council on the

MESSRS.

TAYLOR &KLEINSINGER

58 YEARS LATERBy Yvonne Ervin

Arts, which has drastically cut staff and fundsthis spring.

With all those concerts under his belt, he candefinitely remember a few disasters along theway. "There've been electrical failures, subwaystrikes and blizzards," Kleinsinger recalls."Then there was our concert ten days after 9/11."Pace University was in the "frozen zone" whereno cars were allowed. He rented instruments sohis musicians could arrive by subway. "But thenI learned that they wouldn't let the deliverytruck into the area!" A few phone calls to thepolice garnered the former politico a police escortfor the instruments - and for himself.Amazingly, two-thirds of the ticketholders actu-ally showed up.

His inspiration in presenting the concertshas always been Jazz at the Philharmonic,Norman Granz' legendary all-star jam sessions, and the jam is the format he prefers. "The olderguys loved it. I had Dizzy Gillespie for the seriesthree times," he said. "Tito Puente and RayBarretto loved the jam session format. It gavethem the chance to play outside of their regulargroups and they each had a ball."

But some musicians, especially the youngerones, want to play their own music with theirown group, he said. In that case, he mixes thingsup with a few special musicians plus his tradi-tional surprise guest. Sometimes the guests sur-prise him, he said. "Once we heard this amazingsound from the back of the hall and it was bari-tone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan playing hisway onto the stage." More recently it was SaviorGlover tapping his way onto the stage.

Another key to his series is honoring musi-cian while they're still alive. This year it wastenor saxophonist Lew Tabackin on his seventi-eth birthday. Sometimes, he presents artiststhat most don't consider jazz. His first season in1973 featured Odetta. One star that got awaywas Ethel Merman. Her exclusive contract withLincoln Center prevented her appearance butshe really wanted to do the concert, saysKleinsinger.

Now it's time to say farewell. And what bet-ter way to do that than to have the first musi-cian Kleinsinger presented be the last? Dr. BillyTaylor will appear with his trio: drummerWinard Harper and bassist Chip Jackson. GeneBertoncini, another key to that first concert'ssuccess, is also on the bill. Vince Giordano andthe Nighthawks will open the concert.

Billy Taylor said that while he hasn't playedwith Gene Bertoncini in years, he's looking for-ward to it. "In fact," he says, "the first group Ihad as a leader was a quartet that included aguitar. It presents a different kind of challenge, and it's fun. You have to play different kinds ofvoicings."

Taylor doesn't recall much about that firstconcert fifty-eight years ago. Of courseKleinsinger does, remembering that Earl Maywas present on bass, with Charlie Smith doingthe drumming. "Jack is one of those guys whohas really done a lot for jazz and not gotten thekind of credit that he deserves," opines Taylor."He presents music he thinks is essential listen-ing. To my mind, he's a very special man."

Billy Taylor is the Highlights in Jazzheadliner at Tribeca P.A.C. on May 13.

32 Hart photo by Jos L. Knaepen

DRUMMER BILLY HART IS A DEEP CATwith a light spirit. It's easy to get swirled

into a vortex of optimism while listening to Billytalk about his lifelong role as a performer, edu-cator and listener.

Hart began gigging as a teen in his home-town, Washington, D.C. Besides accompanyinglocal icons like Buck Hill and Shirley Horn, heplayed with R&B legends including OtisRedding and Sam and Dave. “I lived in a placeand during an era, where that was possible," hesays. "It was one of the few areas where thatkind of music was available. It certainly was notavailable at Radio City Music Hall, in Las Vegasor in Miami Beach in those days - just in areaswhere they had something equivalent to theApollo."

Not all of the gigs took place in clubs and the-aters. Many were held in Masonic temples, Elkshalls and National Guard armories. The groupshe played with "weren't on American Bandstandwith Dick Clark. It was interesting to see peoplecome to the gigs in overalls, in places with nochairs and with sawdust on the floor," he says. "Iwas excited about my young life. It was quite anadventure."

Hart witnessed American culture evolve froma time when a musician could be expelled from aconservatory for practicing jazz to the presentwhen the majority of young jazz players honetheir chops in an academic setting. "I'm sup-posed to be a full-time school teacher at threeuniversities [Oberlin, Western MichiganUniversity and New England Conservatory]," hesays. Yet because Hart is on the road so often,"I'm constantly running behind schedule. I copewith great difficulty but the music is alwaysgratifying. That justifies everything."

Aspiring musicians who aren't familiar withthe history of jazz and those who created it "suf-fer. Who are they listening to? That's whythey're students. They want to know and theycome to me to find out. They want to learn. A lotof the teachers are performers like myself, andthe young musicians are getting better by com-ing in contact with actual creators of the music."

A sideman more often than a leader, Harthas played on upwards of 500 recordings, includ-ing sessions with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock,McCoy Tyner, Stan Getz, Pharoah Sanders,Michael Brecker and Dave Liebman. He'sworked with Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, BillyHarper, George Cables, Don Pullen, CharlesLloyd, Kenny Barron and scores of others. "I was

BILLY HART

MR. UPBEAT

By Elzy Kolb

also lucky enough to have performed with MaryLou Williams a couple of times," Hart says."Somebody of that stature, with that kind oflegacy, that kind of knowledge, that kind of wis-dom, that kind of philosophy - not many peoplehave that."

Referring to Williams' sacred music, he says,"A lot of people on that level did that: LeonardBernstein, Duke Ellington, Bach, John Coltrane.Once you get to that level, you experience a rev-elatory thing, you've made yourself available toreceive that kind of energy. Certainly Coltranedid."

Coltrane asked Hart to perform with him inthe mid-1960s. "I chose not to, I thought I was-n't ready," the drummer says. "I adored hismusic on such a level, I thought I'd have nothingto contribute. That gave me encouragement towork toward it as a goal. I thought I'd haveanother chance." Unfortunately, Coltrane diedsoon afterward.

The tenor saxophonist remains one of Hart'sgreatest inspirations. "I have so much regard forhis music, I'm still studying it," he says. "It's sopowerful, there's a clarity in it I heard from thebeginning, a lyricism that was so rhapsodic."

Among Hart's favorite Coltrane recordingsare A Love Supreme and Meditations. The titlesof the compositions on the two recordings "sumup his philosophical learnings. Besides what hegave us musically, there's what he gave us intheory: an optimistic viewpoint of life likeMartin Luther King or Gandhi."

Because Coltrane listened to and learnedfrom players including Johnny Hodges, GeneAmmons, Paul Gonsalves, Eddie Davis, EricDolphy, Ornette Coleman and Dexter Gordon,"You can hear the whole history of AmericanClassical Music in his playing. That's been veryenlightening for me. I was lucky to have seenhim do those things live and see the philosophi-cal purpose he attached to it."

The drummer keeps an unreleased version of"I Want to Talk About You," recorded from aradio broadcast of Coltrane at the Half Note, close at hand. "I never go anywhere without it, Ihave it with me now," Hart said during a recentphone call from California.

Some Coltrane compositions will almost cer-tainly be among the material that Hart willrecord during his Village Vanguard gig thismonth. He had planned to make a live CD therelast fall, "But for some reason Barbra Streisandpicked our week to walk down memory lane,"Hart says with a laugh. The rest of the materialwill include standards and originals. Others inthe group are saxophonist Mark Turner, pianistEthan Iverson and bassist Ben Street.

"Despite my optimism, every now and then Ilook in the mirror and realize I'm getting up inage," Hart says. "I'm pretty lucky. I neverstopped touring and as I get older the people Iplay with are getting younger."

However, "Guys seem to be living longer," hesays, citing elder statesmen such as Roy Haynes,Randy Weston, Hank Jones and Gerald Wilson."Every now and then, when I look at myself, it'slike I'm as old as Scrooge - and these guys areprancing around like they're basketball players. It's encouraging."

Catch the Billy Hart Quartet at theVillage Vanguard from May 18 to 23.

Long-time organ-izerOrganist/pianist/vocalist Sarah McLawler islooking forward to heading into the studio thismonth with a quintet including baritone saxo-phonist Carol Sudhalter, bassist Carline Ray,percussionist Annett Aguilar and drummerBernice Brooks. "I haven't recorded for a longtime," Sarah says. "My albums are still selling inEurope, so they told me I have to record again."From the start of her 75-year musical career,Sarah has been leading all-female bands, as wellas playing with the guys. "I always fought forwomen, that's one of my life's battles. There areso many great female musicians who never gotcredit, never got their due." In the 1940s she ledthe Syn-Cho-Ettes, which became the houseband in Chicago's Savoy Ballroom before comingto New York. When the group played Chicago'sNorth Side, "They billed us as 'sepia entertain-ment'," Sarah says, recalling someone mention-ing "I don't know if the public is ready" for an all-women band. "Your repertoire has a lot to dowith whether or not you're accepted," she says."If you play over their heads, the audience getsbored. Play something people can recognize.Start with the root first, the foundation first, then go far out." Sarah says there are a lot ofgreat female jazz musicians on the scene today;however, "there always have been. [Alto saxo-phonist] Josephine Boyd could do everythingCharlie Parker did, before he did it. Girls likethat never got any recognition." Looking forwardto her 84th birthday on Aug. 9, Sarah says, "I'mglad to tell my age. I hope to inspire people whothink they're too old. I tell them: Get up and dosomething! As you declare something, so it is."Keep an eye out for Sarah's new CD on theDoodlin' label. In the meantime you can catchher at Chez Josephine every Saturday.

Writing and reachingSinger/songwriter Madeleine Peyroux's newrelease, Bare Bones (Rounder), is the first forwhich she's been involved in writing all of thetunes on one of her CDs. "That's something Ialways wanted to do," she says. "Writing hasalways been part of my life on a personal level. The standards I wanted to achieve were intangi-

ble, now I've scratched the surface. It feels likeI'm breaking through a doorway." Songs onwhich she collaborated with a variety of cowrit-ers "went through all kinds of incarnations,"often ending up far different from the originalconcepts. "I can't tell you how odd that is,"Madeleine says. "It's like having two people infront of you, then one becomes the other." Herurge to write is fueled in part by a desire to"open a dialogue with people. The audience is100 percent part of what's happening. Theymake it possible. "Ithas everything to do with my life and the stateof humanity," she says. "It's easy to be stagnantand complacent, to stay in an environment wedon't want to be in. It's harder to move frombeing comfortable to pursuing your goal, yourpurpose in life, without fear." Though Tia's beenon the road in Beyonce's band for about fouryears, she always makes time for her own music. She has been sitting in with local groups fromShanghai to Brazil, discovering after-hours jamswith the help of people like "a jazz fanaticconcierge in Ireland," and making friends withexpatriate American musicians around theworld. "I never want to be in a position whereI'm not growing, not moving forward in purpose, discovering what I'm supposed to be doing onEarth," she says. "There's something to be saidfor all the Randy Westons, Roy Hayneses andGerald Wilsons in the jazz community. They're

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with manyinteresting photos and links.

When Leo Kahn was rehearsing for a televised opera at ABC, the guest conductor wasstartled when percussionist Dave Group struck a chime. "What is this" he asked. "Maestro,"said Dave, "the chime is a signal for a commercial. Every fifteen minutes." The conductorshook his head with amazement and continued. That evening, on the air, after the first quar-ter-hour of music, the chime was struck loud and clear. The conductor brought the orchestraand the singers to a stop, looked down at the violins and whispered, "End of Round One!"

Do you know why a banjo is like a hand-grenade? By the time you hear either one, it's toolate.

Luther Rix told me about a gig that guitarist Richard Frank had booked at a seniorcenter where he sometimes plays. Frank got a call from the entertainment manager, want-ing to cancel the booking. "This is for the Alzheimer's group," he said. You played for themlast week." Frank replied, "And your point is?..."
