JAZZ PROJECTS COME IN ALLsizes and this month's column chroni-

cles two of disparate magnitude. One is alarge-scale realization of a seminal com-poser's unproduced works discovered posthu-mously, performed by a cast of more thantwo dozen musicians. The other is a collec-tive quintet captured on the bandstand inManhattan. However, both the Gil Evanscentennial project and The Flail's live CDrely on smart, creative composing andarranging to invigorate the music.

Ryan Truesdell Presents Centennial:Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans(ArtistShare), brings to vibrant life tencharts found among the late Evans'papers. Included are five charts originallywritten for the Claude Thornhill Orchestramore than 60 years ago. Three of them aretypical of the late 1940s Thornhill soundbased on swing band vocabulary; mostnotable are Scott Robinson's clarinet andtenor sax on "How About You" and purringclarinet on the tango-esque "Who'll BuyMy Violets." There's also a vocal arrange-ment of "Beg Your Pardon" featuring newsinger Wendy Gilles doing a spot-on take ofa cool chanteuse. The revelatory Thornhillchart is an early version of "The Maids ofCadiz," which appeared on the MilesDavis-Gil Evans Miles Ahead album in1957. This 1950 chart is more expansive, demonstrating what Evans pared down toaccommodate Davis.

Evans' affection for sumptuous, sus-tained notes and chords, as well as hiscommand of a wide range of pastel colorsand diaphanous moods set against moreemphatic solo voices or passages, areamply displayed on charts written for larg-er ensembles featuring woodwinds andlower brass. The most cinematic, exotictrack is the opener, "Punjab," written forthe 1964's The Individualism of Gil Evansalbum, but never recorded. Truesdell, afterlistening to the rehearsal tapes, added DanWeiss on tabla—an instrument Evans hadnot used—and it informs the unique feel ofthe 14-plus minute track, from the longprelude, where it is joined by tenor, violin, drums, guitar and flutes; to the main sec-tions, where it is part of the underpin-nings; to the whirling melody accompaniedby deep tuba-trombones chords. Solos bypianist Frank Kimbrough and alto saxo-phonist Steve Wilson weave in and out ofthe rich orchestral tapestry.

The same 24-piece band, minus tabla, is heard on Kurt Weill's "Barbara Song," wrapped in a warm, plush blanket

of colors from floating woodwinds andmuted trumpets to mellifluous Frenchhorns and trombones, all framing JoeLocke's shimmering vibraphone solo. Thepalette of the orchestra is expanded on themedley of Evans' originals, "Waltz/Variation on the Misery/So Long," a 1971arrangement that demonstrates the com-poser's extraordinary command of myriadtones and colors in multiple tempos. Twoshorter vocal tracks round out the album.Kate McGarry inhabits the torch song"Smoking My Sad Cigarette," a heavybrass riff pulling her mood further down;and Luciana Souza does a bossa version of"Look to the Rainbow," a bright ending tothis highly significant CD.

Live at Smalls, The Flail (Smalls Live),is an impressive outing from a quintet will-ing to take creative chances and tacklechallenging, original material. Togetherfor a decade, those ten years show in theband members' easy rapport and interac-tion. However, more important than profi-ciency and musical chops is their attitudeand personality. These are musicians whoare having fun and want their audience toshare in that experience. The music may attimes be artistically daunting, but theiraim is definitely to entertain and engagewith the listeners.

The opening number is a fitting intro-duction to the entire band: a swinging hardbop original, "Mr. Potato Bass," by bassistReid Taylor. A long rhythm section introsets the groove with Brian Marsella's deftpiano solo, followed by the theme fromtrumpeter Dan Blankinship and tenor sax-ophonist Stephan Moutot, who both soloextensively, Blankinship with an expres-sive tone and infectious drive reminiscentof Lee Morgan and Clifford Brown andMoutot conjuring his native France withechoes of Barney Wilen's burly sound andDexter Gordon's Paris period. "BetterWatch What You Wish For" by pianistMarsella mixes rhythms and time signa-tures in a Weimar/Kurt Weill cabaret way,the group even singing a chorus, Mar-sella's solo sparkling like champagne.Other tracks explore freedom byways, takecues from Coltrane, and expand on a modalfeel à la Herbie and Wayne on the capti-vating "Long Neck Beast," equipped with abrace of rhythmic changes from groove tobackbeat shuffle. New Orleans second-linebeats and soul ballad tempos alternate ondrummer Matt Zebroski's danceable, high-spirited "We're Not Out of the Woods Yet,"

MARY HALVORSONCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / MAY 19A bandmate and onetime student of new music pioneer Anthony Braxton, the guitaristand composer Mary Halvorson has quickly become one of the prominent lights ofexperimental improvised music. A consummate and versatile artist, she dazzles notthrough volume but through endlessly inventive melodic lines as well as memorablecompositions. Halvorson's talents are widely documented through a variety of record-ings, both as a leader and as a collaborator with artists including Tim Berne, JessicaPavone and Ingrid Laubrock. At her Cornelia Street Café performance, Halvorson willbe joined by her quintet featuring trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, saxophonist JonIrabagon, bassist Stephan Crump, and drummer Ches Smith, in a concert that cele-brates the release of her latest album, Bending Bridges. SH

BILL CHARLAPDIZZY'S CLUB COCA COLA / MAY 8-13 AND 15-20Bill Charlap is one of the premier ambassadors of the Great American Songbook, whichhas given him volumes of material from which to give us his take on those tunes andothers from the jazz canon. His is the art of embracing a song by making it fresh andpersonal. People started taking note of Charlap's talents in the late 1980s when hejoined baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan's quintet and then alto saxophonist PhilWoods' band in 1994. His swinging trio of 15 years features bassist Peter Washingtonand drummer Kenny Washington—brothers by music, not by blood. There may be noteam more deserving of a two-week stay at Dizzy's. They were the opening act whenJazz at Lincoln Center opened its club space in 2004. KF

DION PARSONMANNA HOUSE / MAY 6Drummer Dion Parson has emerged as a leader after numerous sessions as the con-summate jazz sideman, who also won a pop Grammy in 1997 performing with LaurentDeWilde. He trained at Interlochen in Michigan, Rutgers in New Jersey, and is a long-time student of Michael Carvin. Parson has mixed and matched the polyrhythms asso-ciated with Roy Haynes and Max Roach into his own approach to modern jazz. In the2000s, his ensemble, 21st Century, saw Parson teamed with saxophonist Ron Blake, acollaboration that continues. Melding a contemporary, witty jazz funk with nuevoCaribbean sounds, Parson is a rhythmist for the here and now. His current quintetincludes Blake, pianist Carlton Holmes, bassist Trafon Dimitrov and percussionistAlionue Faye who contains the Senegalese drum, the sabar, in his kit. MGN

MICHAEL WOLFFTRIBECA PAC / MAY 10From his days as a Miles Davis devotee, functioning as music director for ArsenioHall's TV talk show, or his role as the inspiration for the film "The Tic Code," MichaelWolff always has something new up his sleeve. Whether performing pop funk, ethnicworld fusion or straight ahead jazz, his piano playing has always been ahead of thecurve. During this presentation of "We Call It Jazz," Wolff will bring a modern acousticjazz trio with a twist, joined by bassist Harvie S and drummer Victor Jones. Also onthis triple bill is New York Nightlife awardee, vocalist Baby Jane Dexter; and, for theironly NYC appearance, bassist Christian McBride's big band will play music from theirrecent Grammy Award-winning Mack Avenue CD The Good Feeling. MGN

STEPHANE WREMBELJOE'S PUB / MAY 17French guitarist Stephane Wrembel has made quite a splash over the past few years.Initially he studied piano, but was drawn to the guitar and honed his craft amongGypsy caravans in his homeland. Wrembel earned a scholarship to Berklee, graduat-ing summa cum laude and he eventually settled in Brooklyn to pursue his career.Wrembel's style has progressed beyond merely following the footsteps of DjangoReinhardt, as he incorporates rock, blues and flamenco into his unique approach to hisinstrument. Wrembel has released five CDs of his own; the newest, Origins, will bereleased at Joe's Pub this month. He has recorded or toured with David Grisman andMark O'Connor and he can be heard on the soundtracks to two Woody Allen films. KD

PAQUITO D'RIVERABLUE NOTE / MAY 8-13 Clarinetist and alto saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera is an ideal choice to direct the DizzyGillespie All-Star Big Band in its annual Blue Note residency. Gillespie had a career-long love of Latin jazz, of which D'Rivera is a prime proponent; and Gillespie was amongthe first to reach out after D'Rivera's defection from Cuba in 1981. He worked withGillespie's United Nation Orchestra for a time; and led it for a few years after the trum-peter's death in 1993. He also shares key traits: he's a virtuoso player; he aims to bridgecultures with music; and he can ham it up to engage his audience. Gillespie's master-pieces will be in the spotlight all week thanks to this group of his longtime collaboratorsand disciples. KF

BOB RODRIGUEZJAZZ AT KITANO / MAY 2A pianist whose technique draws from hard bop, classical music, and Latin jazz withequal proficiency, Bob Rodriguez has performed alongside such artists as KennyWheeler, Carla Bley and Billy Hart, in addition to leading his own groups. Combining aconsistently gentle touch with animated right-hand melodic work and a clever harmon-ic sense, Rodriguez is also a remarkable composer whose works are often reminiscent ofBill Evans' understated grace. Rodriguez will lead his trio, with bassist Steve Varnerand drummer Bill Tesar, in a performance celebrating the newly established Jazz atKitano venue at the Kitano Hotel. The show is an absolute must-see for music loverswho like their jazz on the thoughtful and subtle side. SH

CHICO HAMILTONDROM / MAY 20Ever since his 1950s quintet featuring flute, guitar and cello, drummer Chico Hamiltonhas fashioned distinctively personal, finely textured sounds with his small ensembles, shaping the rhythmic flow with his urbane, felicitous sense of time, and mastery ofbrushes and cymbals. At 90, Hamilton is the dean of a trio of remarkably resilientdrummers born in the 1920s and still active as leaders, along with Roy Haynes andGrasella Oliphant. Hamilton will be featuring the often winningly mellifluous musicfrom his new CD, Revelation (Joyous Shout), at this concert series celebrating his cre-ative life. He'll lead his working band: Nick Demopoulos, guitar; Paul Ramsey, bass;Evan Schwam, flute, reeds; Mayu Saeki, flute; and Jeremy Carlstedt, percussion, aswell as special guests. GK

RANDY KLEINTHE PLAYER'S CLUB / MAY 5At the inaugural Jazzheads Festival, celebrating 20 years of the label's existence, founderRandy Klein will play piano in duets with musicians who are at contrasting ends of thejazz spectrum. Originally a California metal head, Trans-Siberian Orchestra electric gui-tarist Alex Skolnick has refined his style along the modern mainstream-to-fusion junc-ture. Illinois-born vocalist Nik Munson approaches the music from a vintage, traditional-ist viewpoint, having played with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks and Loren Schoenberg, among others. This gives Klein, who was recently awarded the University of KansasSimons Public Humanities Fellowship, something to sink his teeth into on many differentlevels. Given his background as Emmy winner and composer of music for video sound-tracks, theme weaver Klein provides formats where anything is possible. MGN

MILES OKAZAKIJAZZ GALLERY / MAY 5Extensive sideman credits, including stints with Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy McGriff,Jane Monheit and Steve Coleman, reflects Miles Okazaki's comprehensive command ofjazz guitar. But the Harvard grad didn't just learn on the job; he attended Julliard andstudied Brazilian guitar techniques and Southern Indian rhythmic theory. He's as mucha conceptualist and composer as he is a guitarist. At this gig, he'll be celebrating therelease of Figurations (Compositions, vol. 3) (Sunnyside), the third in a trilogy of albumsof original music. The first two, Mirror and Generations, were studio productions withmultiple reed players, but Figurations was recorded live with just alto saxophonistMiguel Zenon, bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Dan Weiss. NEW JERSEY JAZZBy Sheila Anderson, Author/Announcer, WBGO, 88.3fm

FREDDIE BRYANT BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH / MAY 5This special program, bringing together select musicians from the New JerseySymphony Orchestra with jazz musicians is a departure from most Vespers at thechurch. Though the repertoire has not been made public, the artists on board are BartFeller on flute, Darryl Kubian, violin; Kenny Davis, bass; Cecil Brooks, drums; andFreddie Bryant, guitar. Growing up in a home of classical musicians, Bryant's earlytraining was in classical guitar. He turned to jazz in high school and, after college, hecontinued his dual training and developed his own technique in harmony and improv-isation, which he honed in years of playing Brazilian music. Bryant exhibits a lyricismwith a beautiful sound. Recently Bryant toured with the Chanticleer String Quartetwhere they performed his arrangement of Joaquin Rodriguez's "Concierto de Aranjuez."

AKUA DIXONSHANGHAI JAZZ / MAY 25-26Surrounded by simpatico musicians on the release of her superb debut CD, MovingOn, cellist Akua Dixon takes the jazz quartet to another level. Finally coming out ofthe background, the passionate cellist demonstrates that the cello can be a soloinstrument as it is rarely used in the forefront of an ensemble. Dixon says, "I want-ed to play the language of jazz on the cello and play the changes, the rhythm andgroove of it, with a bow." Having played with Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, RayCharles, and the Temptations, she has absorbed vast knowledge of composing, arranging and even singing. A consummate musician, Dixon has reached new heightsin her fruitful career. She'll be joined by Ron Jackson, guitar; Kenny Davis, bass; andDarrell Green, drums.

ERIC ALEXANDERLUNA STAGE / MAY 20Presented in this newly minted West Orange performance space, "Blues in the Night"is a celebration of the blues-tinged jazz of Hank Crawford and David "Fathead"Newman. Along with saxophonist Eric Alexander will be guitarist Bob DeVos andbassist Mike Karn. Armed with a distinctive, robust, melodic sound, Alexander is aworld-renowned musician who is steeped in the blues as well as the bebop tradition. He started on piano at age six; later he took up the clarinet before switching to altosax in middle school and then tenor sax in college. His career took off in 1991 whenhe placed second in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. This led him to Chicago's South Side to make his recording debut on Muse Recordswith organist Charles Earland and, eventually, he landed in NYC. Influenced by suchgreats as George Coleman and John Coltrane, Alexander continues their legacy.

ANTOINETTE MONTAGUETRUMPETS / MAY 12Newark native Antoinette Montague has two terrific CDs, Pretty Blues and Behindthe Smile, under her belt. On those recordings, the vocalist assembled a "dreamteam" with pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Peter Washington, drummer KennyWashington and saxophonist Bill Easley. A bluesy, swinging singer with a powerfuldelivery, she learned well from her mentors: Carrie Smith, Etta Jones and DellaGriffin. Her delivery of popular standards and hip arrangements of Motown hits isheartfelt and memorable. Montague has had many invaluable musical experiences injazz, gospel and R&B ensembles and she always puts on a fun show as she shares herappreciation of the song and the musicians who work with her.

ICONIC JAZZ PIANIST DR. BARRYHarris is not only a national treasure

and recent recipient of The NationalEndowment of the Arts American JazzMaster Fellowship, among many otherprestigious honors; he's also a jazz ambas-sador to the world. At the tender age of 83,Harris is more vibrant and dedicated thanever, perpetually involved in multiple jazzand artistic efforts as a performer, educa-tor and composer as well as a soulful sourceof optimism. Harris' projects invariablyhave a common denominator: collaborationwith other like-minded souls to unify, healand celebrate the human spirit throughour mutual creative potential and the artof jazz.

In keeping with his role as a venerateddisseminator of jazz history, Harris will beappearing as part of the second annualHarlem Jazz Shrines Festival in "Legendsof the Bandstand" at the historic Harlemjazz club, Minton's Playhouse. Harris willbe remembering his friend, TheloniousMonk, and will be joined on the program byTK Blue celebrating Charlie Parker,Winard Harper honoring Max Roach, and atribute to trumpet legend, Dizzy Gillespie.

The Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival is theresult of an inspired collaboration betweenThe Apollo Theatre, Harlem Stage andNew York City's treasured Jazzmobile. Amassive and eclectic array of events is

planned including concerts featuring bothestablished and emerging artists, paneldiscussions and films. Many belovedHarlem jazz clubs of yore are involvedamong them Club Harlem, Clark Monroe'sUptown House, Havana San Juan Club,Small's Paradise, Park Palace, The LenoxLounge, The Apollo Theatre and, of course,Minton's Playhouse. Other performancespots will be the Harlem Stage Gatehouse,Columbia University and an array of cooljazz boites all over upper Manhattan. Talkabout a Harlem renaissance!

In the early 1960s, Harris moved fromhis native Detroit to NYC, and soonbecame a close friend and musical collabo-rator of Thelonious Monk, as well as afriend of Monk's patroness, BaronessPannonica de Koenigswarter. In the 1970s,Harris, along with Monk and his family, moved into the Baroness's palatial estatein New Jersey, which he still calls home.

In the 1980s jazz fell on hard times. While most of the music listening publicwere getting their groove on at the localdisco, Harris founded the Jazz CulturalTheatre, a hole in the wall on EighthAvenue. The unique storefront venue pre-sented "name" jazz artists on the weekend;during the week, Harris taught both vocal-ists and instrumentalists, and jam ses-sions abounded. Graduates of the informal"University of Barry Harris" include semi-nal bop players Lou Donaldson, PeterLeitch, Clifford Jordan, CharlesMcPherson, Mark Elf, Vernel Fournier andjazz tap dancer Jimmy "Slyde" Hyde.Harris' notable album, For the Moment, was recorded live at the JCT.

Frequently compared stylistically to thelate Bud Powell, Harris has meticulouslyhoned his own approach to bebop which, attimes, has a distinctive romantic and lyri-cal flavor. The list of luminaries he has per-formed with over the years is long andimpressive and includes fellow legendsCannonball Adderly, Illinois Jacquet,Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon andMax Roach. Cementing his fame, Harriscan be seen playing piano duets with thelate, great Tommy Flannagan in ClintEastwood's moving jazz documentary,"Straight, No Chaser."

Harris is an avid, global jazz educator.Since 1991, he has co-created a series ofeducational materials focused on hisapproach to harmonic theory and his tech-niques for jazz improvisation. Any NYCjazz fan will recall that, for many years,Harris produced and performed in anannual event held at Symphony Space fea-turing fully orchestrated renditions of hisoriginal works performed by a potpourri oftop jazz musicians as well as a children'schoir and a massive, multi-cultural jazzchorus. Many of New York's most interest-ing jazz vocalists have come through the

Lovano's. An artist responsible for crucialmusical statements in nearly every cornerof jazz, Lovano has graced avant-garderecordings of Paul Motian, duetted withHank Jones, performed with symphonyorchestras, and paid homage to EnricoCaruso, all while leading some of jazz'smost consistently fascinating ensembles. This month, Lovano brings his Us Fivequintet—featuring pianist James Weidman, bassist Peter Slavov, and drummers OtisBrown III and Francisco Mela—toBirdland.

For Lovano, these performances holdparticular significance. "For me to playwith this band at Birdland after releasingour album Bird Songs is fantastic," he says."It will be a beautiful celebration of themusic of Charlie Parker." Bird Songs, a setof remarkable reinterpretations of Parker'smusic and a continuation of Bird's legacy, imparts an invigorated and celebratory feelto this time-honored music. The album'stracks yield exceptional surprises, includ-ing a lush ballad take on "Donna Lee" anda fugue-like musical collage of Parker'sblues compositions.

This deep re-evaluation of traditiondates to Us Five's genesis. "The groupformed with my original compositions ashome base," Lovano recalls. "But from thevery beginning, we were playing the musicof Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane andBilly Strayhorn. This led very naturally tothe exploration of Parker's great tunes, and Bird Songs evolved from this."

Recalling his own experiences playingwith many of Charlie Parker's band-mates—notably Hank Jones and RayBrown—Lovano found that their teachingsinspired his own uniquely personal explo-ration of the music, often with remarkableresults. "One day I played 'Yardbird Suite'as a hymn. While Parker played it as whatwe call bebop, I took the intervals and har-monies and instead played it as a hymn, and a lot of things started to click for me.Not just about Bird, but also about his dis-ciples—Coltrane, Miles, and Rollins—andhow they took his influence and incorporat-ed it into their ways of playing withoutsounding like him."

Indeed, while Bird Songs undoubtedlywears its Parker influence and inspirationproudly, the record remains firmly in the

voice of Lovano and his bandmates. Pairinglongtime collaborator James Weidmanwith the rising stars Esperanza Spalding(Slavov replaces her at Birdland), Mela, and Brown, Lovano not only forged a fresh, collective sound, he also embraced his roleas mentor to these young talents.

A onetime jazz wunderkind himself,Lovano joined Paul Motian's band at age28, already a seasoned veteran of some ofjazz's leading ensembles. "This happens injazz: as you're developing, if you have ideasand can fit into a lot of settings at a youngage, you can play in the multi-generationsof music," Lovano says. "I moved to NewYork in 1976 and was already playing withJack McDuff, Lonnie Smith, and ChetBaker. Within a few months of arriving Igot the gig with the Woody Herman Band, then with the Mel Lewis Band. I found thatif your passion and ideas can be executedwith feeling, even at a young age, you willbe really involved with what's on thescene."

Combining experienced veterans withyoung lions resonates with Lovano's ownaesthetic, as he notes, "The music reflects amulti-generational, multi-cultural worldwe live in, and the more you embrace that, the more you get yourself together as aplayer." Utilizing this panel of diverse tal-ents, Us Five has successfully carved out aniche for itself as a superb collective effort,no small feat for an ensemble that sportstwo drummers.

In addition to his sensitive interplaywith bandmates, Lovano stretches his ownplaying with Us Five by using other instru-ments. While certainly a titan of the tenor,Lovano identifies himself more broadly. "Ifound that Us Five gives me an open forumto explore the whole woodwind family," hesays. "All these different colors create abeautiful tapestry such that, within thequintet, I have a wider range of music."This range is readily apparent on BirdSongs, as Lovano doubles on other reedsand even unveils a brand new instru-ment—the G mezzo soprano saxophone—on the track "Lover Man."

Everything must changeAlways expect the unexpected from singerJudi Silvano. Her recordings and perform-ances run the gamut from free improv tomeditation music to standards to originals, played by all-female bands or multiplevocalists or the most in-demand New Yorkartists. And at any given time there arealways several other genres and configura-tions waiting to get in the mix. "I've alwaysbeen interested in evolving as a creativemusician," Silvano says. "These are allparts of the same puzzle. I have a sense ofadventure about music, a sense of daring, which speaks to the self-confidence in mymusical vision." On her newest CD, IndigoMoods (Jazzed Media), Silvano is in jazzstandards mode, lending her voice to worksby the likes of Monk, Ellington andDameron, backed by pianist PeterTomlinson and trumpeter Fred Jacobs."It's wonderful to play in so much spacewith a trio like this. Without bass anddrums the space in the music felt so enor-mous; it sounded and felt very delicate. Wecould really listen to each other," she says.Silvano has been singing with uncommoninstrumentation since the days of the loftjazz scene when "we jammed every day asa form of practice. Coming from the classi-cal world of singing in chamber ensembles,I enjoyed the different groupings, how thesound changed and offered different possi-bilities." This is her second crack at record-ing Strayhorn's "A Flower Is a LovesomeThing." "This time I'm doing it more ruba-to, not strictly in time. It's a sound collage;there are different harmonic clashes, achange in the way the lyrics lay out thestory." Silvano celebrates the release ofIndigo Moods at Trumpets May 5; theFalcon in Marlborough May 13; and withan expanded band at the Blue Note brunchon June 24.

Lift every voiceIn preparing for "Blazing Tongues," a trib-ute to jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald andauthor/poet Paule Marshall, picking tunes was no problem for singer Tulivu-DonnaCumberbatch. "Ella did so much material, her discography is so extensive, that it'shard to get away from it," she says with achuckle. "I based my choice of songsaround Paule's themes and books, thingsthat fit with the subject matter she talksabout." Actress Beareather Reddy will readfrom Marshall's work, including "Poets inthe Kitchen." In this essay, Cumberbatchsays, "Paule talks about the ladies who satin the kitchen in her mother's house; theywere vibrant and resourceful. I'll sing'Stella by Starlight' to pay tribute to them.Paule is Barbadian and Stella is a popularname in Barbados." Marshall has also writ-ten about growing up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, surrounded by great musi-cians including Lester Young. "Prez wasunique, in the way he dressed, the way hetalked, in every way," says Cumberbatch, who will respond to the Prez-related read-ing with "You Can't Take That Away FromMe," modifying some of the lyrics to fit thesaxophone giant's personal and musicalstyle. Coincidentally, Cumberbatch nowlives in the house in which Marshall spenther childhood. While reading the author'snovel Brown Girl, Brownstone, "I felt like Iwas in the book, like I was part of thebook," the singer recalls. "Then I found outI was in Paule's house through a New YorkTimes article about her childhood."Cumberbatch, too, grew up surrounded bymusic: Her father was noted baritone saxo-phonist Harold Cumberbatch; her motherwanted to sing, but couldn't get parentalpermission. "My mother was actually a big-ger influence on me than my father. Shealways sang Billie Holiday songs to me. Iknew all of Billie's songs by the time I wasthree. Singing always gave me the greatestjoy." Cumberbatch and Reddy will appearat Lenox Lounge on May 8, part of theHarlem Jazz Shrines Festival. Other festi-val events include pianist Amina ClaudineMyers at Harlem Stage Gatehouse May 8-9; drummer Terri Lyne Carrington'sGrammy-winning Mosaic Project withbassist Mimi Jones, saxophonist TiaFuller, pianist Helen Sung and many oth-ers at Harlem Stage Gatehouse May 10;and organist Sarah McLawler atShowman's May 12. FRESH TAKESBy Samuel Miller, student at the New School

At just 23, Ben van Gelder is alreadyestablishing himself as a force to be reck-oned with on the New York jazz scene. VanGelder moved to NYC from Amsterdam in2006 to study saxophone at The NewSchool with Lee Konitz and GeorgeGarzone. When improvising, a reverencefor Konitz is present, but never at theexpense of his own distinct voice. That orig-inality has landed him gigs all over theworld, including the North Sea JazzFestival, and won him a long list of acco-lades—most notably, the Deloitte JazzAward. His debut album as a leader, Frameof Reference, features a wonderful samplingof young musicians, of which AmbroseAkinmusire and Aaron Parks seem to be the"wily-old veterans." This coming month atCornelia Street Café—May 3rd—vanGelder focuses his explorations on jazz stan-dards, primarily the music of TheloniousMonk. With the spirit of swing always inthe mind, he leads a quartet, featuring sax-ophonist Kyle Wilson, bassist Joe Sandersand drummer Craig Weinrib all of

whom are sure to breathe new life intothese older, familiar songs.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your

favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

At an audition for singers desiring entry at the Manhattan School for Music, Nancy Moranowas judging, and Mike Abene, Harvie Swartz and Justin Di Ciocco were accompanying the applicants. When the singers gave the trio their lead sheets, Abene would re-harmonize everything, making it dif-ficult for Swartz to guess what bass notes to use. Swartz said to Abene, "Why don't you just play thechords on the sheets, so we can get this together and get out of here?" Abene replied, "My mind tells meI should be playing those sad chords, but my fingers just won't obey."

Ken Arzburger remembers a lecture Charlie Barnet once gave his band during a pokergame about the evils of gambling. He was able to give them an object lesson: Bill Potts challengedhim to a playoff, and at the end of the week, when Kurt Bloom handed Bill his pay envelope, a sin-gle nickel fell out.
