THE GUITAR MAY WELL BE THEmost popular musical instrument of

our era: dominant in rock, blues, country, folk and other American vernacular musicas well as in classical and world musicfrom a host of other countries. With thischameleon instrument and its myriadforms and sounds, from acoustic to ampli-fied to electric, jazz guitarists can gleanideas and influences from a wide spectrumof sources in creating their work. The twoCDs in this Winning Spins, from guitaristsPJ Rasmussen and Freddie Bryant, demonstrate the width and breadth ofstyles and strategies available to today'sjazz guitarists. Rasmussen's CD is expan-sive, an ensemble and composition drivenouting, while Bryant's is an inventive, reflective album of exquisite musings andintimate musical conversations.

Another Adventure, PJ Rasmussen(Third Freedom), finds the guitarist lead-ing a septet, beefed up to a nonet on twotracks and reduced to a quartet on anoth-er, in a program of nine diverse originalsranging from rocking to hard bop, folk andmodal to reflective ballad. Rasmussen, stillin his early 20s, has absorbed rock as wellas jazz influences, employing big, fuzz-toned rock chords on the nonet opener,"Full Speed Ahead," a careering piece builton a wave-like baritone sax-led ostinatoand a blues-rock vibe. Its rocking natureintensifies as Lauren Sevian’s baritonesolo is shored up by an increased back beatwhile claps join that rhythm behind ScottRobinson's wailing tenor sax. Jim Ridl'sjangly piano solo gives way to the leader'ssolo, begun as a maelstrom but settlingdown to jazzy tinkles as the theme returns. It’s ambitiously multi-faceted, as is theother nonet track, the title tune, a CharlesMingus influenced journey through timeand tempo with tonal and dynamic shiftsand the leader’s echoey guitar in a centralrole.

"Love Birds," in contrast, is a straight-ahead hard bop number reminiscent ofGrant Green or Kenny Burrell's 1950s out-ings with tenor saxophonists; here, NateGiroux echoes Hank Mobley. The modal"The Seven Seas" conjures Carlos Santanameeting Gil Evans, while "Ruthie," a folksyballad, suggests a rock guitarist in a jazzmode. Other songs are impressivelyepisodic and genre eclectic. The quartetcloser, "For David," is an emotionally cap-tivating, indelible ballad that is striking in

its compelling simplicity.Dreamscape: solo, duo, trio, Freddie

Bryant (GJK Sounds), evokes a guitarist insolitude, communing deeply with his muse, especially on the eight of 14 tracks that aresolo guitar. However, the album opens in ajaunty, communal fashion with Bryant onboth 12-string and Fender electricTelecaster guitars, along with ChrisPotter's soprano sax and Scott Colley'sbass, on the swinging and swirling titletrack. The next pieces are solo: a conspira-torially hushed Thelonious Monk tune,"Ask Me Now," on arch-top (the classic,pre-rock jazz guitar), also the format forCharles Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat,"another soft reverie. Two duets on origi-nals with Colley, one with Bryant playingnylon string and the other the Telecasterguitar, are both consummate examples ofduo interplay.

The trio is heard twice more. "Songs"opens with Potter's bass clarinet and arcobass ushering in the arch top guitar pop-ping and bending strings in a bluesy introthat recedes into a lovely melody, cleanlyintoned by Bryant and repeated by Potterbefore all solo at a heartbeat tempo."Everybody Is the End and the Beginningof Life Beautiful" is a hard bop-ish themewith Potter on tenor sax, Colley walkinghis bass and Bryant's Telecaster solo astudy in dynamics and hi-lo contrasts.

Bryant is at his most enticingly inti-mate in a handful of nylon string soloexcursions, from the bossa nova ballad"Estate" to Herbie Hancock's "WatermelonMan," to the standard "Secret Love," whereif he's not overdubbing he's a magician. Hissolo takes on Charlie Haden compositions"For Turia" and "Silence" are mesmerizing. The album ends with a 1974 recording ofBryant's mother singing the traditionalspiritual "I'm Going to Tell God All of MyTroubles" at a Carnegie Hall concert wherethe nine-year-old Bryant turned the pagesfor his father, the piano accompanist.Earlier on the disc is a duet version mov-ingly sung by Potter's bass clarinet withrolling accompaniment by Bryant's nylonstring guitar.

The PJ Rasmussen Septet is atShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn March14; his trio will play Maggie Murray'sPub in Dunellen, NJ on April 2.Freddie Bryant has a CD release gigfor Dreamscape at Smalls March 31.

CORINA BARTRASOMETHIN' JAZZ CLUB / MARCH 6Vocalist Corina Bartra's musical fluency combines the Criolla harmonies and rhythmsof her native Peru with jazz and world music. Whether performing with an orchestraor a quartet, Bartra finds her groove and builds a sound that is all her own. Bartra'semotional delivery and unfettered quality have been met with acclaim with the NewYork Daily News and All About Jazz singing her praises. Alongside grants from theAmerican Embassy and the Carnegie Foundation, Bartra has aimed her sights onexpanding Afro-Peruvian jazz in the United States, securing its presence for years tocome. At Somethin', saxophonist Math Stackler, guitarist Billy Newman, pianist DanKaufman, bassist Uri Klainman and percussionist Perico Diaz will join Bartra on tunesthat span her entire catalog. EW

CYNTHIA SAYERJOE'S PUB / MARCH 7A decade in Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band increased Cynthia Sayer's publicexposure. But it's the four-string banjo player's work as a leader that has expanded herstyle and her reputation as a formidable jazz musician. It doesn't hurt that she is alsoan appealing singer in the mainstream tradition, with more than a wink of humor andirreverence in her approach. One of last year's delights was Sayer's CD Joyride (cynthiasayer.com), wherein she ventures beyond the usual circumscribed banjo role to fea-ture it as a blues, tango and swing instrument, as well as a credible ballad limner. She'll be front and center at this gig, billed as The Banjo Show, with Dennis Lichtman, clarinet and fiddle; Jared Engel, bass and Larry Eagle, drums. GK

AL FOSTER VILLAGE VANGUARD / MARCH 11-16Considered one of the most versatile and in-demand drummers today, Al Foster is wellinto his sixth decade as a professional. Foster made his recording debut at 16 with BlueMitchell. Heard in 1969 by Miles Davis, the trumpeter recruited Foster for his bandwhere he would spend the next 13 years touring and recording. Foster's versatile chopshave been utilized by numerous greats including McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, BillEvans, Stan Getz, Horace Silver and Dexter Gordon, to name just a few. By 1997, thedrummer was leading his own group on a regular basis and made his first CD as aleader, Brandyn, which also showcased his skills as a composer. His current quartetincludes saxophonist Dayna Stephens, pianist Adam Birnbaum and bassist DougWeiss. KD

AMBROSE AKINMUSIREJAZZ STANDARD / MARCH 13-16Quirky originality may be valued among jazz legends, but Thelonious Monk probablycouldn't win the international competition named in his honor—at least not until2007, when Ambrose Akinmusire not only won it, but went on to win a prestigiousInternational Jazz Trumpet Solo competition. Akinmusire is not afraid to expand andeven ignore the usual parameters of trumpet playing in fashioning compelling, cliché-free solos that can range from mellow to clamorous, pinched and squeezed to clarion.Since signing with Blue Note three years ago he has expanded his vision as a compos-er and leader. At this gig the Ambrose Akinmusire Project, his working quintet plusguitarist Charles Altura and vocalist Theo Bleckmann, will be previewing his new CD,the imagined savior is far easier to paint. GK

MARIA SCHNEIDER JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER / MARCH 14-15Duke Ellington's highest praise was to describe something as "beyond category." Hiswords come to mind on the heels of composer/conductor/arranger Maria Schneider win-ning three 2014 Grammys in Classical categories for her latest recording, WinterMorning Walks (ArtistShare). However, garnering a new armload of awards to deco-rate her already crowded mantel is not a sign that Schneider is turning her back on hermusical roots. Listeners will have a chance to hear that for themselves when she bringsher 17-piece jazz orchestra into the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. In the twodecades since she released her first big band/orchestra recording, Schneider has con-sistently attracted some of the top players in jazz and crafts her material to spotlighteach individual's talents and skills. BRIAN LANDRUS92Y / MARCH 14Primarily a baritone saxophonist, Brian Landrus uses all the low octave woodwinds inhis arsenal for this set, on the first day of the annual 92Y Soul Jazz Festival, where heis also artistic director. He'll open for DJ Logic and Joey DeFrancesco's All Stars. The35-year-old straddles the fence evenly between mainstream and progressive jazz. Afterearning Master's degrees in both composition and saxophone from the New EnglandConservatory, Landrus stormed onto the NYC scene. His band, Kaleidoscope, a highlevel electric quartet melded with a string ensemble, can be heard on Capsule and therecent Mirage (BlueLand). Conducted by Ryan Truesdell, it features guitarist NirFelder, keyboardist Leo Genovese and bassist Lonnie Plaxico, while the acoustic instru-mentalists include notables like violinist Sara Caswell and cellist Jody Redhage. MGN

STEVEN BERNSTEINDIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / MARCH 23Steven Bernstein's stunning command of the trumpet beautifully anchors the melodyand remains aggressive without overwhelming the song at hand. Whether leading hisown groups or working as a hired gun with the likes of pianist Carla Bley and drummerBobby Previte, Bernstein carefully walks the line between unrelenting sonic mania andcontrolled calm. Bernstein's musical output is that of the consummate musician withprojects that include jazz groups, television/movie scoring, pop arranging, and compos-ing for theatrical productions. Bernstein will bring his Diaspora Soul, an R&B and Afro-Cuban influenced group that performs arrangements of traditional Jewish cantorialsand popular songs, to Dizzy's as part of the Town Hall Newish Jewish Music Festivaldedicated to Jewish and Israeli traditions found in contemporary music. EW

GARY PEACOCKBIRDLAND / MARCH 18-22Bassist Gary Peacock's steadfast expression beautifully adheres to any musical situa-tion he finds himself in. Cutting his teeth in the trios of saxophonist Albert Ayler andpianist Bill Evans, Peacock's melodic sprints and harmonic dashes underline a musicianwho is ready, willing and able to juggle the many responsibilities of the modern jazzbassist. For the past 30 years, Peacock has been a member of pianist Keith Jarrett'sStandards Trio alongside drummer Jack DeJohnette, becoming one of the most premierand longstanding jazz trios. Their most recent release, 2013's Somewhere, showcasesstandards written by everyone from Miles Davis to Leonard Bernstein. For his shows atBirdland, Peacock has rounded out his Now This trio with drummer Joey Baron andpianist Marc Copland. EW

ANAT FORTCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / MARCH 26A native of Israel, pianist Anat Fort was initially taught classical music but her love ofimprovisation drew her to the U.S. to study jazz at William Paterson University and, eventually, with piano master Paul Bley. Fort draws from many stylistic influences asa performer and composer, equally at home playing introspective ballads and addingunexpected accents into her compelling works. Although she has been on the New Yorkjazz scene for more than a decade, Fort has recorded infrequently; but her releases haveearned critical praise, particularly her adventurous ECM CD A Long Story, which fea-tures the late drummer Paul Motian, the eclectic clarinetist Perry Robinson and bassistEd Schuller. Fort will be accompanied by her longtime bassist Gary Wang and veterandrummer Matt Wilson at Cornelia Street. KD

RUSS KASSOFFSAINT PETER'S CHURCH / MARCH 19One of the jazz world's underrated gems, pianist, composer and arranger Russ Kassoffhas long served as back up to some of music's most renowned figures including FrankSinatra and Liza Minnelli. However, when left to his own devices as a bandleader,Kassoff proves to be a delightfully chameleonic figure whose performances and compo-sitions might evoke anything from classic stride form to a contemplative piano touchreminiscent of Keith Jarrett. Kassoff's 17-piece big band offers a perfect vehicle for hisbroad musical vision and its performances can include repertoire ranging from originalsto Ellington to even arrangements of Tori Amos. Vocalist Catherine Dupuis, a longtimecollaborator of Kassoff, joins as a special guest in what is a must-see event for any bigband aficionado. You can also hear them at NYC Baha’í Center Feb. 25. SH

Hazeltine & Metheny photos by Jimmy Katz

DAVID HAZELTINEBETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH / MARCH 1David Hazeltine has seen wide horizons as a pianist in jazz, from his early years inMilwaukee at the Jazz Gallery, playing alongside Sonny Stitt, Eddie Harris and ChetBaker, to his two decades in Manhattan, where he's been featured with Louis Hayes,Jon Faddis, Ernestine Anderson and Marlena Shaw. Hazeltine is an integral part ofthe collective One For All and has made 25 recordings as a leader, focusing on his ownmaterial as well as tributes to Bill Evans, Horace Silver and Bud Powell. CedarWalton once said, "David's style has a deep commitment to jazz history while commu-nicating a wealth of today's ideas." Joined by Nat Reeves on bass and Billy Drummondon drums they will be featuring standards and originals and, as Hazeltine says,"swinging as much as humanly possible!"

LIONEL LOUEKEUNION COUNTY PAC / MARCH 29Lionel Loueke came from poor beginnings in the West African country of Benin. As ayoung student of guitar, when his strings broke, he replaced them with bicycle brakecables until he could afford to buy real strings. This persistence guided him to jazzafter hearing a George Benson album. He studied in Paris and later attended theThelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at USC. There, he played with faculty memberTerence Blanchard and was eventually featured on Blanchard's CDs Bounce andFlow (Blue Note). Loueke went on to record with Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves,Wayne Shorter, Charlie Haden and Santana. On his own recordings, Loueke fusestraditional African music with modern jazz harmonies, unique vocal inflections andcomplex time signatures. In Rahway, Loueke will perform alongside bassist MichaelOlatuja and drummer John Davis.

PAT METHENYCOUNT BASIE THEATRE / MARCH 23Guitarist Pat Metheny's versatility is almost without peer regardless of the instru-ment. From his early years with Gary Burton to his group recordings, to solo effortsand his one-man Orchestrion, Metheny has proven that he looks at the guitar as anopen road. Last year he received his 20th Grammy and DownBeat readers voted himinto its Hall of Fame—the youngest member, alongside Charlie Christian, DjangoReinhardt and Wes Montgomery. In Red Bank, he'll feature music from his UnityBand’s brand-new recording Kin (Nonesuch) with Chris Potter on woodwinds, BenWilliams on bass, Antonio Sanchez on drums and newest member, Giulio Carmassi,on piano, trumpet, trombone, French horn, cello and voice.

ANTOINETTE MONTAGUEDORTHAAN'S PLACE / MARCH 23Jazz Times once wrote of singer Antoinette Montague, "Jazz players love to accompa-ny a genuine jazz singer and Antoinette is as real as they come; good range, phrasingand taste." Montague's father would often drop her off at the library in Newark tospend hours listening to Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington recordings. Later, encouragement from Etta Jones would help her develop into a performer featured inmost New York and New Jersey clubs, fronting small groups and big bands.Montague's recorded efforts show clearly that she's comfortable with belting out ablues or whispering a love song. At this brunch-time concert, Montague will do a spe-cial salute to Etta Jones, Carrie Smith and Dionne Warwick, joined by pianist DannyMixon, bassist Lisle Atkinson and drummer Bobby Sanabria.

IT'S TEMPTING TO PLAY THE SIXdegrees of separation game while listen-

ing to George Cables talk about his back-ground. From Roy Eldridge, DizzyGillespie, Roy Haynes, Art Blakey andSonny Rollins to Tony Williams and Jeff"Tain" Watts, Cables says: "I've been for-tunate and blessed to have had the chanceto play with many people who shaped thismusic."

Cables was saxophonist DexterGordon's pianist of choice for several years."He's my musical father. I remember himtalking about Lester Young, ColemanHawkins and John Coltrane," Cablesrecalls. "Dexter was there to give music les-sons, not verbally but by example, aboutwhat he looked for and advised people tolook for if they wanted to grow." In 2006,Cables released the CD A Letter to Dexter,to pay tribute to his mentor and friend.

On Cables' new recording, Icons &Influences (HighNote), he salutes otherfriends, colleagues and players whoinspired him. In planning for the recording,he says, he went right to Duke Ellington, for whom he used to rehearse vocalists."Ellington is someone who embodies thismusic. Just his concept, 'It don't mean athing if it ain't got that swing,' certainlyinfluenced me. It doesn't have to be swing, but there has to be a groove, a root."

In addition to Ellington's "ComeSunday," the new CD includes DaveBrubeck's homage "The Duke" as a way torecognize multiple greats with one tune.

Brubeck's Take Five was one of the firstjazz records Cables owned and he admiredMiles Davis' version of "The Duke" from theGil Evans-arranged recording Miles Ahead.

"The new CD is about honoring peoplewho have meant a lot to me," says Cables, who wrote the piece "Cedar Walton" inmemory of that pianist who died in 2013."Cedar was a big part of my music life."During his early jazz years, Cables recallsstanding behind Walton at Club Ruby inQueens, listening, watching and learning."I admired Cedar and his music; I felt kin-ship with him. He just wanted to be a goodband member, a good player," a concept thatresonated with Cables and became his goal.

"Farewell Mulgrew" is dedicated toMulgrew Miller, another pianist the jazzworld lost last year. "I remember him whenhe was young and skinny," Cables sayswith a laugh. "He was serious and soulful, but also had a great sense of humor."Trumpeter Woody Shaw, a former bandmate of both Miller and Cables, wouldoften talk about Mulgrew, Cables says."Woody had an eye for people who werespecial."

Several compositions on the CD werewritten by some of the iconic musiciansCables played with over the years, includ-ing vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's"Little B's Poem." "He's been a strong influ-ence and he has recorded a lot of mymusic," Cables says. "Our spirits match:Bobby's a great musician; he's a partnerand a teacher to play with." SaxophonistJoe Henderson's theme song, "Isotope" isincluded, as is "Blue Heart" by BennyGolson. Cables found the music on yel-lowed paper in a drawer. "I don't think Iever played it," he says. "I like to end a CDwith something quiet, so when it's over andthere's silence you can stop and be withyourself. That's 'Blue Heart,' a little some-thing to take along after the music hasstopped."

Besides honoring his forbears and col-leagues, in his daily life Cables is excitedabout and supportive of younger players, many of whom he meets while teaching atThe New School. "I'm involved with youngpeople at school and in workshops; I like tohear them and interact with them. It'simportant to have that connection—that'sour foundation, but it can always movealong." While Cables doesn't hit the clubsas often as he used to, he listens to a lot ofnew CDs, citing recent works by GeraldClayton and Robert Glasper as amongthose that have caught his ear. And eachsummer for the past three decades, Cableshas enjoyed going to Jazz Port Townsend."I get to play with a bunch of people there, like Matt Wilson and Anat Cohen—she's aforce of nature! I have such a great time!"

Although Cables celebrates his 70thbirthday later this year, in his spirit and

TO BUSTER WILLIAMS, PLAYINGjazz is the fine art of living dangerous-

ly. "From the first note that I play, I am liv-ing in the realm of danger. It is a dangerthat I am willing to venture into—and Ineed it; I need that danger," the bassistsays. "Jazz is a conversation. When you arelistening to something astonishing fromanother player, you react. 'Oh yeah.' 'Ohman.' 'What was that?' What I am playingare those expressions, also. It makes youcome up with something maybe more bril-liant than you would have done if youweren't listening so well."

Williams has been living on that musi-cal edge most frequently with his ownband, Something More. He formed thequartet in 1990 after working for morethan 30 years as a sideman to many of thegreatest names in jazz. He brings hisSomething More quartet to Smoke thismonth with pianist Eric Reed, drummerLenny White and alto saxophonist BruceWilliams.

Something More's roster changes fromgig to gig and tour to tour, depending onmusician availability and geography. Forexample, for last month's Portland JazzFestival, Williams used pianist GeorgeColligan, drummer Cindy Blackman-Santana and saxophonist Bennie Maupin,as well as trombonist Julian Priester, withwhom he hadn't worked since they werepart of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi bandin the late 1960s and early 1970s. (Maupinwas also a Mwandishi band member.) Thetalent pool that Williams draws from also

"Everyone that I call on, all of these dif-ferent choices that I have, they are allbringing something new to the table all thetime," Williams says. "I never have toworry about complacency or being bored ornot having something to say. All of themare advancing. No one is about lookingback, but looking forward. Because of theway they play, because of their ability tolisten and because of their great contribu-tion, they make the band great. That'smore important to me than anything."

Something More was an album Williamsmade for Germany's In+Out Records in1987 with Hancock, saxophonist WayneShorter, drummer Al Foster and trumpeterShunzo Ohno. "Usually, with all of the timeit takes to make a record, I don't necessar-ily want to hear it again. But this time, Ireally enjoyed this record every time I lis-tened to it. More than that, I enjoyed themusic that I wrote," Williams said. "I foundthat I could be happy playing this musicnight after night. So I put a band togetherand my European promoter booked a tour.We started working and working andworking. I called the band SomethingMore. The title was open ended. It didn'tpigeonhole the band. It served as an expres-sion of my concept of music. I always wantit to be something more than it was before, not just something different. What it givesto the listener should be something more."

The band is special, Williams says, because of its very nature. "As much as Iam a participant, I am even more excitedby what these people do. I'll look at themand say 'How did they think of that?' Theseguys are just brilliant. It's my greatesthonor to be up on the bandstand with peo-ple who are really letting their gray matterrun free, people who don't seem to be limit-ed in their creativity, in their ability tocome up with something that has neverbeen done before. The feeling that I get isjust amazing. I can't think of anythingmore fulfilling."

Williams, who has one of the most dis-tinctive tones among jazz bassists, willturn 72 on April 7. The long list of jazzgiants he has played with includes GeneAmmons, with whom he went on the roadat 17, as well as Art Blakey, Chet Baker,Betty Carter, Chick Corea, Miles Davis,

Bloch studied classical piano, guitar andopera singing from early childhood, butchanged directions after her brother gaveher a John Coltrane record. "I didn't knowjazz could be like this," she says. "I thoughtit was Benny Goodman all the time. I did-n't know there could be this depth of feel-ing, that it could be so sincere, like a per-son talking to himself. It just killed me. Ithought, 'I want to be like this.'" Blochtaught herself to play saxophone which, she said, was a big disaster in the family."They didn't oppose me playing the instru-ment, but they didn't want this noise: I wasterrible!" She studied music in Israel,Germany, Canada and the U.S., learningfrom masters like Yusef Lateef andinspired by Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh andLenny Tristano. Bloch, who moved toBrooklyn in 2008, gave up singing soonafter picking up the sax: "To sing in public, one has to sound outstanding, like aninstrument." But she still likes to learn thewords of the tunes she plays. "To knowlyrics helps in executing the melody; ithelps make variations in the melody in amore organic way," she says. After years ofgigging with players like Dave Douglas,Joe Lovano, Ted Brown and ConnieCrothers, Bloch has just released her debutrecording as a leader, Feathery (13thNote), with bassist Cameron Brown, drum-mer Billy Mintz and guitarist Dave Miller."It happened all at once; I found all theright people," she says. Bloch and her quar-tet will feature tunes from Feathery at theSalmagundi Club on March 18 and at theDrawing Room on March 30.

Citizen of the worldThroughout her career, global events

have inspired pianist/composer ToshikoAkiyoshi's writing. "I consider myself amember of society; I'm aware and con-cerned about what happens," the NEA JazzMaster and 14-time Grammy nomineesays. Akiyoshi "started to think of writing

as stories about social issues, politicalissues. I wanted to have more colors, like apainter, so I wanted to have a largerensemble." She fronted a big band for 30years, performing major pieces such as theMinamata suite and Hiroshima—Risingfrom the Abyss, but there was a downside:Akiyoshi didn't play much and hardly eversoloed. "A jazz player is happiest whensoloing. One night a young lady came up tome and said, 'Do you play piano?'" Aroundthe same time, after a solo piano gig at theKennedy Center, Akiyoshi realized, "I feltcomfortable. This is what I'd like to do; Ihave one hundred percent control. I can'tblame anyone—if things don't go well, blame me." She disbanded her orchestra infavor of solo, trio and, occasionally, quartetgigs with her husband, saxophonist LewTabackin. "He has to compromise, in asense, for us to play together," the pianistsays. "I'm not a very good accompanist, soLew will suffer." When Akiyoshi's quartetwith Tabackin plays Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola March 25-26, expect to hear stan-dards and originals such as her signaturepiece, "Long Yellow Road." And, Akiyoshisays, "Lew always likes to play 'Farewell toMingus.' He plays it so beautifully." Herorchestral pieces don't lend themselves tothe smaller bands, but she always playsthe last portion of Hiroshima, "Hope," toclose every gig. "That's my little statementthat someday maybe we won't be fightingeach other. It probably won't happen in mylife, but we can hope."

Musician/Booker's Corner"To me, A Love Supreme is the most

potent sonic work of art that I've ever expe-rienced," explains pianist Noah Baerman."And I have a hard time believing thatColtrane could have created somethingthat potent if it were just a bunch of tunesthat he put on a record." Indeed, forBaerman, music has always been deeplyintertwined in a reciprocal relationshipwith broader issues both in society and inpersonal development. As the ArtisticDirector of Resonant Motion, Inc.,Baerman has committed his artistic andcreative energies toward leading thisunique not-for-profit group dedicated to"exploring and promoting the intersectionof music and positive change."

Baerman's long-held view was certainlyreinforced throughout his musical upbring-ing as a student at Hartford's ArtistsCollective, a musician-run and sociallyengaged organization founded and headedby Jackie McLean. Baerman was fortunateto enjoy, from the beginning, a variety ofkey mentors who recognized the position oftheir work within broader social contexts.Later, Baerman studied with KennyBarron, whose humility proved inspira-tional to the young pianist. "Kenny is one ofthe humblest human beings I've ever met,"he notes. "He really believes he's blessed todo what he does and he doesn't believe thatwhat he does makes him any more impor-tant than the janitor who sweeps up thebuilding. Studying with him reinforced forme that having a sense of humility and dig-nity and having a broader sense of human-ity was part of the gig."

As Baerman's career has progressed, hisinsistence on ensuring personal develop-ment and social good through music hasendured. Indeed, many of his projectsexplicitly tie themselves to causes, such ashis 2002 album Patch Kit, which wasrecorded to benefit the Ehlers-DanlosNational Foundation and to raise aware-ness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. While hewas pleased with the fundraising andawareness raising success of the project,Baerman found himself struck by an unin-tended outcome. "What I was not expectingwhen I recorded Patch Kit was how it res-onated with people impacted by thoseissues, whether they were dealing directlywith the syndrome, or whether they werecoping with another type of disability andseeking to find strength and dignity," heexplains. The experience proved eye open-ing for Baerman, as he saw his music as a

potential entry point for new listeners tofind a resonant and emotional path to expe-rience jazz and benefit from it.

This year, Baerman celebrates therelease of Ripples, his ninth album as aleader and the first to be produced in con-junction with Resonant Motion. Standingas a summation of the musical and socialideals Baerman upholds, Ripples showcas-es two ensembles: Baerman's regular trioaugmented by a chamber ensemble and hiscollaborative Jazz Samaritan Alliance, fea-turing a number of longstanding collabora-tors including Jimmy Greene and KrisAllen, who first encouraged Baerman toattend the Artists Collective. There are anumber of guests including Kenny Barron. The title track, written in homage toBaerman's late aunt Margie Pozefsky, offers a central theme, not only to thealbum, but to Baerman's overarching goalsin music. "The inspiration came from see-ing how her work as an activist—she was akidney transplant recipient and spearhead-ed a kidney exchange program—had a pro-found ripple effect," Baerman explains."People were being positively impacted byher, even people who were several degreesof separation from her. I don't know howmany people there are whose lives weresaved by her, even though they never mether, and I think that was a reflection of herkindness and goodness. That became thecentral theme behind the record and is thecentral theme behind what we're trying todo with Resonant Motion."

Baerman is at Jazz Gallery March 13with the Jazz Samaritan Alliance for a CDrelease concert, and with his trio at TheSide Door Jazz Club in CT March 29. Tolearn more about Noah Baerman and hismusic, visit www.noahjazz.com.

A recent graduate of the ManhattanSchool of Music, Natalie Cressman isstriving to create jazz music that is"sophisticated and high art," but alsoappeals to her generation. "The music Iseek out and love isn't always so easy toclassify. I wasn't trying to be different, butthe kind of music I love is different," the22-year-old says. Cressman's second CD,Turn the Sea, will have its NYC releasethis month at Joe's Pub. The band fea-tures Cressman on trombone and vocals,Ivan Rosenberg on trumpet, SamoraPinderhughes on piano and keyboards,Jonathan Stein on bass and MarkWhitfield Jr. on drums.

Cressman says that Turn the Sea is aunique project for her since it's the firsttime she has used the lyrics of her songsas the focal point for writing everythingelse. This jazz musician delves into thesinger-songwriter role a lot more on thisalbum, citing Joni Mitchell as a majorinfluence. "If I had to pick, she's my singlemost favorite songwriter," Cressman says. She also lists the band King, Norah Jonesand vocalist Emily King as inspirations.

While the album is driven by the lyricsand music, Cressman stays true to herjazz roots with improvisation a major ele-ment on the tracks.

Cressman comes from a musical fami-ly: her father is Santana's long-time trom-bonist and her mother is a vocalist. Shehas been touring with Phish vocalist TreyAnastasio and his band for the last fewyears. In addition, she has performed withWycliffe Gordon, Nicholas Payton and oneof her personal mentors, Peter Apfelbaum.

The Camden NJ native says he learnedone big lesson from all of his musical boss-es: it was the way in which they "expressedthe totality of life in their music. Every sin-gle bandleader that I worked with has beenan expression of this totality. Music wasnot just something that they did; it was anexpression of their humanism."

Buster Williams and SomethingMore with Bruce Williams, Eric Reedand Lenny White are at Smoke March28 and 29.
