TWO TRUMPETERS WHO HAVE BEENimportant participants in the New Yorkjazz scene for three-plus and two-plusdecades, respectively, are featured in thismonth's Winning Spins. Eddie Allen hitthe Big Apple via the jazz program atWilliam Paterson University in the late1970s and, besides leading his own smalland large bands, has been part of ensem-bles as diverse as Mongo Santamaria's,Muhal Richard Abrams' and LesterBowie's Brass Fantasy. Alex Sipiagin isone of a cohort of talented Russian jazzplayers on the scene; he came here in theearly 1990s with bassist Boris Kozlov. Both are long-time members of the MingusBig Band and, along with three othersbandmates, constitute the cooperativequintet Opus 5.

Push, Eddie Allen (Edjalen Music),draws on the leader's experiences withAfro-Latin, big band and post-bop ensem-bles and features eight of Allen's originalcompositions as well as a ballad standard.Allen has taken a basic sextet instrumen-tation with tenor saxophonist Keith Loftisand trombonist Dion Tucker joining himwith a rhythm section of pianist MarkSoskin, bassist Kenny Davis and drummerE.J. Strickland and augmented it with theelectric keyboards/synths of MishaTsiganov. A couple of Afro-Latin grooves kick off

the CD beginning with "Nakia," a Latinshuffle enhanced by synth string back-grounds and "Sacred Ground," wherein atropical groove is laid down by marimbapatterns from Tsiganov that contrast withthe boppish horn ensemble. A sensualdreamy quality pervades "Caress," a balladat a slow lope with bassist Davis carryingthe melody before seductive, billowing solosfrom the horns over wafting synth strings.Allen is a trumpeter who has mastered

the vast historic tradition of his instru-ment. He can squeeze and bend notes likea swing or trad player, produce the clarionpeals of a Latin lead and skip and flutterwith bebop dexterity. On his boogaloo"Hillside Strut," he evokes Lee Morgan orClifford Brown, while his gorgeous openlimning of "Who Can I Turn To?" is theequal of any trumpet balladeer workingtoday. On "Whispers in the Dark," a rumbacum samba, a low trombone solo perfectlycontrasts with Allen's trumpet gymnastics, from pinched and squeezed notes to squirt-ing cackles, all over a synth string honeyedbackground. The backbeat shuffle opening of "Eve

Deceived," with vibes sounds courtesy ofTsiganov, includes a slower riff section, setting up solos climaxing with Allen's: atour-de-force begun with slithering linesleading to a long-held high note cascadinginto a Dizzy Gillespie-like arpeggio andsqueezed off flourish finale.Allen's originals are involving and

entertaining, none more so than the last, title track: a sequential feature for drum-mer Strickland pairing him with eachsoloist in a hip-hoppy dialogue that morphsinto ensemble swing after each solo.

Progression, Opus 5 (Criss Cross). LikeEddie Allen, the members of Opus 5 aremore ambitious and adventurous than toproduce tracks following a basic head-solos-head formula and, even more thanAllen, they favor odd time signatures.Trumpeter Sipiagin, tenor saxophonistSeamus Blake, bassist Kozlov, pianistDavid Kikoski and drummer DonaldEdwards were not only well acquaintedwith one another from the Mingus BigBand, but had also been on an Opus 5 tourof Europe before going into the studio torecord Progression, the band's thirdalbum. That familiarity makes even themost intricate and acrobatic ensemblefeats come off with aplomb, as on Kozlov's"Walk A Waltz" which, strangely, has no3/4 time but where the jigsaw puzzle-liketheme juxtaposes meters of 5 and 7 andeach solo is taken in a different time:Kikoski's Fender Rhodes solo in 7/4;Sipiagin's trumpet in a faster than "TakeFive" 5/4 and Blake's in 4/4 swing. Sipiagin splits between trumpet and

flugelhorn, playing both with clean élanand a frisson on uptempos and deft lyri-cism on slower ones. On his own"Climbing," he adds to the swirlingpolyphonal lines in 7/4 time by dubbingHarmon-muted trumpet along with hisflugelhorn. Kikoski also adds tonal colorsby switching between acoustic piano andFender Rhodes. The band's inventiveapproach culminates in Edwards' waltzballad for his mother, "Geraldine," as twothemes emerge from flugelhorn and tenorsax, solos are cast in 11 bar segments andjust when the horns seem to take it out,Kikoski's piano adds a long, lyrical solo ascoda.

Eddie Allen's Aggregation band plays atZinc on August 6, Lyndhurst Estate onAugust 7 and SideDoor on August 9. AlexSipiagin leads a quintet that duplicatesthe personnel of Opus 5 at Smalls August13-14.

S P O T LALAN CHAN JAZZ ORCHESTRASHAPESHIFTER LAB / AUGUST 4Prepare to be surprised. This big band may boast a familiar template of brass, reedsand rhythm but it doesn't deliver the sounds you'd expect. Hong Kong-raised AlanChan creates a palette distinctive from almost all other similar outfits using the samebasic instrumentation. His music is impressionistic, his tonal colors unique. Tunesprogress as a narrative or panorama rather than in any usual song form. This is theEast Coast debut of the music from the orchestra's first album, Shrimp Tale (CrownHeights Audio Network), featuring compositions inspired by Chan's cultural interestsand travels. "Moving to a New Capital" begins with traditional Japanese folk musicand then portrays the teeming cauldron of Beijing today. "Rancho Calaveras" is a Tex-Mex polka channeled through big band swing. GK

DAVE STRYKERJAZZ STANDARD / AUGUST 6Dave Stryker, a guitarist who played with organist Jack McDuff and saxophonistStanley Turrentine in the 1980s and has more than 25 releases as a leader, reachesback into his youth to find the material for his latest CD, Eight Track (StrikezoneRecords). This compilation of 1970s pop hits opens with a killer quartet shuffle on "I'llBe Around," they channel Coltrane on "Aquarius" and put a 6/8 vibe to "WichitaLineman." At this CD release party, Stryker will be joined by Jared Gold on organ,McClenty Hunter on drums and special guest Warren Wolf on vibraphone substitut-ing for Stefon Harris who plays on the recording. Stryker's trio also will be at the BarNext Door on August 26. YE

RICK STONEBAR NEXT DOOR / AUGUST 8A Cleveland native, veteran guitarist and jazz educator Rick Stone has long been partof the New York jazz scene. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1980, mov-ing to New York to work with jazz masters at Barry Harris' Jazz Cultural Theatre forseveral years. He earned his MA at Queens College, studying with Ted Dunbar, TonyPurrone, Jimmy Heath, Donald Byrd and Hal Galper. In 1985, he released his record-ing debut, Blues for Nobody, following it with four more, most recently Fractals.Stone's fluid style draws from many different influences whether he's playing stan-dards, timeless jazz vehicles or his superb originals. The guitarist will be joined bybassist Harvie S and drummer Joe Strasser for three sets. KD

FABIAN ALMAZANVILLAGE VANGUARD / AUGUST 12-17Here's another Cuban-born pianist making immediate impact, similar to the explosionof Cuban baseball players. Fabian Almazan just won Rising Star Pianist in the DownBeat Critics Poll, owns a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music andstudied with Kenny Barron and Mark Levine. After moving from Havana to Miami toNYC, he worked regularly with Terrence Blanchard for four years. While able to con-jure Cubano fire, he emphasizes elegance in his classically oriented contemporaryjazz. Almazan has two CDs out: the indie debut trio effort Personalities and his recentrecording for Blue Note/Artist Share, Rhizome. At the Vanguard, Almazan will fronta trio for the first three days alongside bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer HenryCole, adding the Rhizome String Quartet for the weekend. MGN

RAY MANTILLAPIERSON PARK / AUGUST 8By his 40th birthday in 1974, percussionist Ray Mantilla was already one of the mostimportant percussionists in the jazz canon. His early work with Eddie Palmieri andRay Barretto helped to forge the sound we know as salsa, while his collaborations inthe jazz vein included contributions to Max Roach's "We Insist! Freedom Now" mas-terpiece, tours with Art Blakey and a vital role in the formation of the percussion col-lective M'Boom. As Mantilla celebrates his 80th birthday this year through interna-tional performances that include two local dates in August, we can look back and seethat his second 40 years have only increased his influence, artistry and accolades, truly placing him as a living legend in both the Latin and jazz worlds. He will also per-form at the Louis Armstrong House Museum on August 21. SH

CONRAD HERWIGBLUE NOTE / AUGUST 19-24Trombonist Conrad Herwig's subtle lyricism and pliant melodic methods have beenmet with acclaim. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Herwig has experimentedwith bebop, pop and Latin traditions while performing with saxophonist JoeHenderson, trumpeter Tom Harrell and pianist Eddie Palmieri. The jazz press hasnoticed Herwig's talents with Down Beat awarding him the "#1 Jazz Trombonist" in1998, 1999 and 2002. In concert with his active schedule, Herwig's commitment to jazzeducation has earned him grants from the National Endowment for the Arts as well asan academic appointment at Rutgers University. For his concerts at the Blue Note, pianist Michel Camilo will join Herwig for The Latin Side of Horace Silver, an inter-pretation of the music of the late composer and pianist. EW

ADAM RUDOLPHJAZZ GALLERY / AUGUST 15A percussionist extraordinaire as a sideman in jazz or world music, Adam Rudolphoccasionally fronts his own potent and exotic Moving Pictures ensemble. An expert inWest African and South American music, in Rudolph's mind there's much more tyingtogether the threads of diverse cultures than meets the ear. You may be familiar withhis work accompanying Yusef Lateef, with the Eternal Wind Ensemble, the GoOrchestra or Omar Sosa. Rudolph's many projects are on the Meta label, the latestbeing Voice Prints. Moving Pictures will certainly pay tribute to the late Lateef, KennCox and Charles Moore. The band includes woodwind veteran Ralph M. "Buzzy" Jones,Tim Keiper on the dousson'gouni, guitarist Kenny Wessell, keyboardist Alexis Marcelo, drummer James Hunt and bassist Damon Brooks. MGN

CHRISTOPHER MCBRIDEGINNY'S / AUGUST 23Alto saxophonist Christopher McBride was exposed to many styles of music in hishousehold, with soul jazz and R&B most prominent in his playing. Active on the jazzscene since the mid-1980s, he has appeared on CDs by vocalist Milton Suggs and trum-peter Marquis Hill. McBride released his CD Quatuor de Force in 2012. He has per-formed with Jimmy Heath, John Clayton, Antonio Hart, Orrin Evans' Captain BlackBig Band, Winard Harper, Roy Hargrove, Valery Ponomarev, Bobby Broom and theJason Marshall Big Band; he also tours with Afro-Zep. The Chicago native now callsBrooklyn home. McBride has played venues around the globe and appeared at theChicago Jazz Festival for the past two years. KD

CHARLES TOLLIVERIRIDIUM / AUGUST 20-21Trumpeter Charles Tolliver epitomizes the journeyman quality that jazzmen perfectthroughout their careers. Self-taught, Tolliver eschewed traditional educational prac-tices and, instead, cut his teeth in the bands of saxophonists Jackie McLean and HankMobley as well as drummer Roy Haynes. Tolliver’s on the job training resulted in afresh sound: robust in its execution and warm in design. As a leader, Tolliver has exper-imented with bebop, hard bop and free jazz textures with his most recent releaseEmperor March: Live at the Blue Note expanding his harmonic terrain to include bigband structures. Tolliver will bring his varied harmonic toolkit to the Iridium for fourshows that are sure to deliver on his original approach to the jazz language. EW

JON HENDRICKSJAZZ AT KITANO / AUGUST 30Dubbed both "The Poet Laureate of Jazz" and "The James Joyce of Jive," Jon Hendricksall but invented the vocalese style—setting lyrics to classic instrumental arrange-ments—that has been revered and copied by every generation of jazz vocalist to followhim. As lyricist and one-third of the vocal group Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Hendrickssupplied lyrics not only to jazz's greatest melodies, but also to its greatest solos: indeed,to hear an extraordinary confluence of Hendricks' vocal and lyrical talents, listen to hisown navigation of Ben Webster's iconic solo on "Cottontail." Slowing down only some-what at age 92, Hendricks continues to teach and perform. At his Kitano show he willbe joined by pianist Steve Ash, bassist Neal Miner and drummer Andy Watson. SH

NEW JERSEY JAZZGary Walker, “Morning Jazz Host”, WBGO, 88.3 FM/wbgo.org

ZACH BROCKOSPAC / AUGUST 9Violinist Zach Brock was raised in Lexington KY, rising to the challenge of his musi-cal family with performances starting at age six. With an initial interest in classicaland folk, he discovered jazz in high school, moving to Chicago for further classicalinvestigation at Northwestern University while embracing the jazz scene. The result,as described by Bill Milkowski in JazzTimes: "Zach Brock is a violinist whose everyphrase argues for the instrument's value in 21st century jazz." Brock's abilitiesadvance the inspirations of Stephane Grappelli, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang and StuffSmith. His latest CD, Purple Sounds (Criss Cross) has Brock dipping into the jazz vio-lin canon with some inspiring new arrangements he'll share alongside guitarist LageLund, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Obed Calvaire.

JACKIE ALLENTRUMPETS / AUGUST 7Described as "utterly distinctive and innovative" by Billboard Magazine, vocalistJackie Allen was surrounded by the jazz sounds of her tuba-playing father, growingup outside Madison WI. A move to Milwaukee would bring a four-year associationwith organist Melvin Rhyne. With an alluring vocal style and open ended song choic-es, Allen can be husky one moment, gracefully sexy the next, wringing all there is toget from any tune in the book. These abilities have put her on stages around the globe, appearing with classical orchestras or making any club her private living room. Withher quintet, Allen will focus on her new CD, My Favorite Color (Avant Bass), inter-preting the songs of Harold Arlen, Bacharach & David, Jimi Hendrix, Gershwin andSteeler's Wheel, along with a few of her own.

RALPH PETERSON, JR. ATLANTIC CITY / AUGUST 28Ralph Peterson began playing drums at age three, strongly influenced by four unclesand a grandfather who were also timekeepers. Peterson's sense of time eventuallyearned him work with Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison, Dewey Redman,Walter Davis, Tom Harrell, Charles Lloyd, David Murray, Betty Carter and as seconddrummer with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He's also passing along his knowledgeas an instructor at Berklee College of Music. Peterson has just released his 18th recordas a leader, ALIVE at Firehouse 12; Volume 2 - The Fo'tet: Fo' n Mo' (Onyx), show-casing Strayhorn, Monk, Corea and Bud Powell alongside three new originals.Captured live, it shows an artist delivering his noted power and energy, pushing thecollective envelope every chance he gets.

MATT HOFFMANBICKFORD THEATRE / AUGUST 11From the moment he picked up two mallets as a kid, Matt Hoffman turned heads. Apivotal encounter as a teenager onstage with Lionel Hampton was the dealmaker fora life as a jazz vibraphonist. With a Master of Music Degree from SUNY Purchase,Hoffman has shown comfort in the laid-back swing and take-no-prisoners fire that twomallets can kindle. Hoffman's talents have taken him to Lincoln Center, the Blue Noteand festivals around the country. It's "Vibes-A-Poppin'" as Hoffman shares the nightwith fellow vibraphonist Paul Midiri, guitarist James Chirillo, saxophonist Mary LouNewman and bassist Jack Heggie. The show salutes three legendary bands: The RedNorvo Trio, Lionel Hampton's small groups and early Milt Jackson.

MARCUS PRINTUP HAS BEEN Acritical favorite since his debut as a

leader, Song for a Beautiful Woman, her-alded for his skillful, innovative compos-ing and arranging, along with his consid-erable chops. Printup was surrounded by music in his

home in Conyers GA. "My parents raisedme in the black Baptist church," heexplained. "There was always singingaround us. I was too shy to sing, though Istarted playing trumpet in fifth grade. Iwas never serious about practicing; Iplayed sports. My band director, DavidHudson, introduced me to jazz. I knew itwas beyond the marching band music orsymphonic music we were playing. Therewas something deep in his soul every timehe played. I got into jazz as a college fresh-man and never turned back."Printup began at Georgia State

University then transferred to theUniversity of North Florida with a musicscholarship in 1988, which opened manydoors for him, especially its exceptionalartist-in-residence program through whichMarcus Roberts heard the trumpeter play-ing in a small combo."He liked what he heard but knew I was

very raw. He sent someone to find me andwe played for two to three hours," herecalls. "Marcus told me the greatest thinganyone has said to me about my playing: 'Ican tell you have some natural talent, butthat you don't practice. If you don't applyyourself, you won't get far in this business. You won't excel as a great musician unlessyou start to hone your skills.'"I toured with him as his road manager

for a year, then after his gigs, he wouldgive me lessons, teaching me tunes, voic-ings and chords," Printup said of thepianist. "Marcus introduced me to WyntonMarsalis and I joined the Lincoln CenterJazz Orchestra, which I've been in for 21years."The trumpeter has nothing but praise

for Marsalis: "I've played under manybandleaders, but Wynton knows every-thing going on with the orchestra. It keepsme elevated. He finds time to practice andtalk about music in spite of how busy he is.He's humble and will ask us questionsabout music." Printup credits singer Betty Carter as

an important mentor, too, especially for herinvitation for the young man to join hernew jazz education program, Jazz Ahead."Betty went to clubs to hear young musi-cians and would hand pick 30 or so from

continued on page 40

across the country, fly them to New York, rehearse them for a week and then do aconcert. She heard me at an Iridium jamsession and introduced herself, inviting meto Jazz Ahead. I met Reuben Rogers,Adonis Rose, Jacky Terrasson, CyrusChestnut and Greg Hutchinson," he says."She gave us lessons and chose me to do aballad feature with her, 'The Nearness ofYou.' It wasn't recorded but she mentionedour duet together in a bio of her, whichmade me feel very special."Printup and his wife Riza met through a

fellow Conyers native who read the trum-peter's bio in the program to a LCJO con-cert in Chicago. He asked his mother aboutPrintup who knew the trumpeter and wasa friend as well as office coworker of Riza, and she set them up on a blind dinner date.Riza, a classically trained harpist, wentwith reservations, but the two of themended up playing duo piano at theIntercontinental Hotel for several hoursinto the night. "We started playing together right

away. She went to Indiana University andstudied with David Baker. When we gottogether, she really started to blossom,"Printup said. "Now, she's busy writingarrangements." On the trumpeter's CD, Desire, featur-

ing Riza with bassist Ben Williams anddrummer E. J. Strickland, Printup wantedto find another way to use the harp. "Onour first CD together I wrote out someparts for my wife on a few tunes. She wasmore prominently featured on A Time forLove, a trio with bass. But there was nopulse without drums and I wanted to gether in a format more like a small group set-ting so we could play more modern compo-sitions. I wrote some music and she com-posed three songs. The melody to 'Desire'came to me when I was playing in a jazzseries at the Rubin Museum. I saw a paint-ing with a man and woman disrobed in anembrace and I could tell that they desiredone another. It's a very sexy song."

IMAGINE AN ARTIST WITH A PER-formance résumé that includes stints

with Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, RoyHaynes, Abdullah Ibrahim, Betty Carter,Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, Dee DeeBridgewater and the Mingus Big Band andwhose saxophone playing was broadcastinto millions of homes each night via theCosby Show, yet is still criminally under-rated. In the extraordinary saxophonistCraig Handy, you have just that artist.

If there is justice in the universe, thiswill change following the release of his fifthalbum as a bandleader: Craig Handy &2nd Line Smith. This remarkable projecteffortlessly fuses the grooving organ workpioneered by Jimmy Smith with NewOrleans second line rhythms and unitesHandy's ensemble with guest appearancesby Dee Dee Bridgewater, WyntonMarsalis and others.

The origins of this infectiously dance-able ensemble lay in Hudson County NJ."The core of the group was myself alongwith Kyle Koehler and Matt Chertkoff, both of whom lived near my neighborhoodat the time," Handy explains. "Previously, Ihadn't played much in an organ band. I didwork with Dr. Lonnie Smith, but I neverworked with Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff orLarry Young. When you don't really get todo something, later in life you want to goback and try it out. So I decided I was goingto start my own organ band."

The ensemble began gigging locally inNew Jersey, while also taking someManhattan-based dates. Handy brought inSteve Williams as the drummer and slowlythe band started to develop a strong soundand rapport. It also hit an artistic plateau."We got to a point where we had this smok-ing chitlin' circuit-style organ group,"Handy recalls. "And after one of our bestgigs, we realized that in playing JimmySmith's or Larry Young's songs, we werenever going to be able to play that musicany better than those guys did. I'm notStanley Turrentine, Matt's not WesMontgomery, Kyle's not Jimmy Smith. Weare who we are, and we had to figure out adifferent route."

With that, Handy set to work re-imag-ining the music and finding a new path. While listening to the original recordings ofthe masters, Handy noticed a strong rhyth-mic resonance between the work of JimmySmith and the rhythms of New Orleans. "Istarted listening to Smith's hits, namelyThe Cat and High Heel Sneakers, to seewhat made them so popular," Handy notes."It finally hit me like a sledgehammer: itwas the drum rhythms which were basical-

ly modified Second Line street beats. And Idecided that's what I wanted to do. I want-ed to make a record with this band usingmodified New Orleans street rhythms."

Taking his band into the studio, Handyalso enlisted the talents of a trio of incred-ible drummers—Herlin Riley, JasonMarsalis and Ali Jackson—to help drivethe unique rhythmic engine he was aimingfor. The results are palpable: Smith's clas-sic "High Heel Sneakers" gets a NewOrleans-drenched makeover, while WesMontgomery's "Road Song" takes on a newvigor, aided by Clark Gayton's pumpingsousaphone work. Additionally, some ofHandy's former colleagues and collabora-tors—Dee Dee Bridgewater and WyntonMarsalis—join in as special guests.

The effort has paid off: Craig Handy &2nd Line Smith marks one of the mostexciting new releases from the re-launchedOKeh Records and the crowd response tothe band's live gigs has proven equallyheartening. "Every time we perform we getthe same response: people love the musicand the band because there's somethingfor everybody," Handy says. "We're a danceband masquerading as a jazz quintet, orperhaps vice versa, depending on how youwant to look at it. People who like a beatand want to shake their tail feathers cando that, while people who like the classicrecords have something to enjoy, becausewe're not abandoning straight-ahead jazzeither. I don't want to say it's crossover, but there's an element in this music foreverybody, even for people who don't knowanything about jazz."

When Handy brings the band and itsexuberant new sound to the Charlie ParkerJazz Festival, he is clear on his goal: "It'sgoing to be a party! We want people todance, even on stage if they're feeling it.The only requirement we have is that peo-ple have a good time."

Craig Handy with organist KyleKoehler, guitarist Matt Chertkoff, ClarkGayton on sousaphone and JeromeJennings on drums will appear at theCharlie Parker Jazz Festival on August 24at Tompkins Square Park.

Ideas and energyUnlike a lot of saxophonists, Carol

Sudhalter isn't primarily influenced byJohn Coltrane. "People get into Coltrane asteens and that changes their whole lives. Ididn't start out that way. It's a whole dif-ferent mindset," she says. "I sound differ-ent from people who are really influencedby him." Instead, Sudhalter looks to anearlier era for her musical touchstones. The players she "resonates to" include BixBeiderbecke, Django Reinhardt, ColemanHawkins, Lucky Thompson, FrankieTrumbauer and Dexter Gordon (whomColtrane cited as an inspiration). Listenerswill have a chance to hear Sudhalter'srange this month starting with a tribute toBix Beiderbecke, to be held under the archin Sunnyside Queens on August 2. "I grewup with that style of music and I know thetunes. I don't play in that style at all, but itdoes influence my playing," she says. She'llfront her quartet at Somethin' August 11focusing on new originals, plus sambas andless-often-heard standards. On August 20,Sudhalter's quartet will be joined by a spe-cial guest, pianist/organist/singer SarahMcLawler, for Jazz at Midday at SaintPeter's Church. "We're going to play someof my super-favorite tunes," Sudhaltersays, "Sarah will play piano, though Iexpect that she will drift over to the churchorgan before the concert is over." And atmonth's end, the baritone/tenor/flutemaven will don her sidewoman hat to joinMcLawler's band at Central Park's HarlemMeer August 31. There are likely to be afew house concerts on the schedule, too."They are my passion right now. I wouldlike to do that all over the world. It's a won-derful, intimate way to play jazz; it harksback to the old days." Besides her busy per-formance schedule, Sudhalter is also in themidst of an intense period of composing."I'm writing much more than I used to. Ihave all these great little 5- and 6-year-oldstudents. The tunes I'm writing are a wayto express the feelings I have while work-

ing with them."

Inner lightPianist Yelena Eckemoff studied classi-

cal music while growing up in Moscow, butin her teens she became curious about jazz."People around me were talking about jazz, saying it's cool. I wondered what theyheard in it. I was trying to get it, trying tobe open-minded." Eckemoff listened to themusic her friends recommended—she likedthe Mahavishnu Orchestra in particular—and eventually studied in a "semi-under-cover jazz studio in Moscow. There wasjazz in Russia, but you had to find it." Thepianist says she never made an abruptshift from classical to jazz, though she doesrecall telling her husband one day, "I don'twant to hear symphonic music anymore!"Eckemoff and her family moved to NorthCarolina in 1991. "We came with zeromoney. I didn't speak English very well; Ihad to put things on hold. It was a strug-gle." For a while she focused on raising herchildren and getting acclimated to her newhome, "but I never stopped doing music; Iwas never completely out of the business."She played classical concerts at churchesand composed and practiced in her homestudio. Eckemoff formed a band with localplayers and eventually began working withmusicians on the Internet, swapping tracksand developing tunes. Lately, the pianisthas been making up for lost time, recordinga half dozen CDs in the past four yearswith the likes of Peter Erskine, MarilynMazur and Mads Vinding. Her brand-newrelease, A Touch of Radiance, includesdrummer Billy Hart, bassist George Mraz, vibraphonist Joe Locke and tenor saxo-phonist Mark Turner. The original pieceson the recording are inspired by whatEckemoff calls, "radiant experiences." Sheexplains, "There are some things in life—kindness, love, moments that are reallyspecial, that seem to shine. Every song isabout one of those states of mind, states ofexpression, experiences that stay in yourmind and body and make you, you."Eckemoff and her band, including Mraz,

saxophonist Donny McCaslin and others, will celebrate the release of A Touch ofRadiance at Jazz Standard August 12.

Words to live byPianist Peggy Stern has a simple musi-

cal mantra: "Like minds have good timestogether." A long-time East Coast jazz com-munity stalwart, Stern moved to Austin acouple of years ago to spend time with herdaughter and grandchildren and she's wellon her way to becoming indispensable inTexas, too. "It's an interesting town formusic," Stern says. "I've adopted westernswing as a project. It's fun. There are sepa-rate scenes for jazz and western, but I'mbridging it." She's demonstrated her bridg-ing skills in action before. The JazzJournalists Association named Stern a2014 Jazz Hero, along with partner JohnBilotti, for producing the annual WallStreet Jazz Festival in Kingston NY whichfocuses on presenting bands led by women."Many festivals have no women," Sternsays. "Sometimes there are vocalists, but ifthere are no women instrumentalists incharge on the festival schedule, that's aproblem. That problem should be solved bynow. It's getting better, but it's not evenclose to being solved." This year's festivalfeatures saxophonists Sue Terry, ClaireDaly and Virginia Mayhew, singer TeriRoiger, pianists Stern, Roberta Piket andLaura Dubin and others. In planning thefree event ("fund-raising is hair-raising!"she says), Stern carefully maps out "thetrajectory of the sets; I think of the wholething as a musical suite. It's up to eachleader what they want to present. I tellthem, 'You're our guest; you're in charge ofyour set.'" The event includes a "mix-and-match all-play set—I don't call it 'all-star'—with different combinations of twos, threes and fours." Expect to hear someMarian McPartland material, some origi-nals and a salsa jam to wrap up the festiv-ities including "salsa standards and re-har-monized and re-rhythmized tunes.Everyone comes out and dances." The 11thannual Wall Street Jazz Festival takesplace August 30, at the corner of Wall andNorth Front streets, in Kingston startingat 5 p.m.

Musician-Talk Show Host’s Corner"I'm always learning," drummer Alvin

Atkinson explains. "After a day of teachinga concept, I sometimes think, 'Wow, I justhad to break it down for a student, so nowI really understand the ins and outs!'"Indeed, it would be only a small exaggera-tion to say that Atkinson lives and breathespercussion education. A highly sought-aftercollaborator on the bandstand whose drum-ming has graced the ensembles of EllisMarsalis, Jimmy Heath, Barry Harris,Houston Person and Wycliffe Gordon,Atkinson has perhaps made his biggestmark as one of jazz's most beloved and tire-less teachers. For Atkinson, the practice of drumming

and the teaching of drumming have alwaysbeen inextricably intertwined. "I studiedwith Ed Thigpen for about 12 years, rightup until he passed," Atkinson recalls. "Heencouraged me to explore the whole gamutof music in order to improve. He told me toteach everyone, not just trained drummersaround my age. He instructed me to teachlittle kids, or people with no experience, because that's the most difficult group toteach and that's how you grow as an educa-tor. You then have to understand the ABCsof what you do and develop your own peda-gogy."As Atkinson continued to build up his

bona fides in the bands of luminaries whilemaintaining his teaching schedule, he alsofound time to lead groups and deepen hismusical exploration. The result, his ensem-ble the Sound Merchants, providedAtkinson with what he deemed a "jazzinternship." "I would use the group as avehicle to study music or concepts I wasinterested in," he notes. "We would play alltypes of music and the group evolved insuch a way that we would play DukeEllington or Louis Armstrong, then turnaround and play Mahavishnu Orchestra oreven Grateful Dead!"As his experience deepened, Atkinson

found an increasing desire to broaden andexpand his advocacy, ultimately launchingThe Drummer Speaks: an education work-shop that has since developed into a TVshow on the Manhattan NeighborhoodNetwork. Expanding upon Atkinson's life-long fascination with teaching and learn-ing, The Drummer Speaks focuses onexploring great bands from the perspectiveof the drummer. Each episode features performance

footage by one of music's great drummers, followed by an in-depth interview between

Atkinson and the guest, covering a widerange of topics. "If you talk to groups'drummers, you quickly learn that theyhave a unique perspective on the band andon the role of each member of the band," heexplains. "So I wanted to create a platformto hear some of the greatest groups in theworld and get insights from the drummer."Indeed, the title of the show, The

Drummer Speaks, reflects a remarkableinsight, not only into Atkinson's work andaesthetic, but into music in general. "I feelthat the drummer's voice is often on mute:we see a lot of stuff going on but most of thetime we're not asked to talk," he says. "Butthe drummer sits at the center and whenyou talk to the drummers, they give you somuch insight into the music."Alvin Atkinson performs with Wycliffe

Gordon at Jazz at Kitano August 8-9 andwith Denise Perrier and Houston Person atDizzy's Club Coca-Cola August 15-17. Tolearn more about The Drummer Speaks, visit www.facebook.com/TheDrummerSpeaks.

Singer/songwriter Dara Tucker wasborn into a musical family and exposed tothe rich tradition of gospel music whilegrowing up in Tulsa OK. Her father was amusic minister and Dara began to hone herskills at the tender age of five, singing inthe church's choir and starting to playsongs on the piano at age eight. After com-pleting a degree in International Businessand German Studies, Tucker worked for awhile in Detroit in corporate languagetraining and subsequently moved toNashville in 2004 to work on songwriting. Now based in NYC, Tucker already has

an impressive array of credentials and willgive a CD release concert of her thirdalbum, The Sun Season (WatchmanMusic). Tucker says that the music thatmakes up The Sun Season was a seven-year writing process. She wanted to createmusic that was "country-friendly" but stillcontaining the soulful R&B and gospelroots she grew up adoring. The album fea-tures ten songs, most of which are Tucker'soriginal compositions, with an all-star line-up of pianist Helen Sung, guitarist PeterBernstein, saxophonist John Ellis, trom-bonist Alan Ferber, drummer DonaldEdwards and Tucker's husband and co-pro-

ducer Greg Bryant on bass. Tucker saysthat many of the compositions were writtenwhile sitting outside and the uplifting, pos-itive themes reflect the life-giving force ofsunlight that inspired her to write. "Thesun is the place where joy and love reside. If we let that light speak to us, we can sur-vive anything," she says. In her short but impressive career, she

has shared the stage with Dr. LonnieSmith, Cassandra Wilson and BennyGolson and has performed at notable ven-ues such as The Blue Note, Scullers inBoston, The San Jose Jazz Festival andCleveland's Nighttown.

The Gerry Mulligan Sextet was on tour in Europe in 1956. The group consisted ofMulligan, Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, Jon Eardley, Dave Bailey and me. Since the groupwas pianoless, we usually tuned to Gerry's baritone sax. One day, while we were tuning, Zootdropped his mouthpiece cap, and it rang a perfect "A." We all laughed, and from then on,whenever we assembled onstage for a concert, Zoot would tap his mouthpiece cap against thebell of his tenor, and we would take our "A" from that for tuning.Bassist Brian Nalepka was once playing an Oktoberfest gig on tuba. The affair was in a

barn, and the band, wearing lederhosen, was playing tunes like "Tavern in the Town." A gen-tleman stepped up and asked to make a request. He wanted to hear Jerome Kern's "TheFolks Who Live On The Hill." The leader thought for a second and said "How aboutBlueberry Hill?" The man looked dejected. "No Thanks," he said, and walked away.
