THREE PIANISTS AND A SAXOPHONEplayer comprise the entire personnel of this

month's pair of Winning Spins, two CDs featur-ing one of the most demanding formats in jazz."Duo playing is closer to solo playing than, say, quartet work" says pianist Bruce Barth, whoteams up with alto saxophonist Steve Wilsonon one of the albums, "There's a lot of freedomwhen it comes to doing what I want to do," henotes, "and Steve has such great time that Idon't feel that I have to provide the groove. That's something that's completely equal." Thepiano duo format requires "a delicate balance,"says Renee Rosnes, who partners up with hus-band Bill Charlap, "as well as a heightenedsense of listening and a certain degree of orches-tral thinking. When twenty fingers are involved, there's a high potential for musical clutter. Billand I seem to innately search for clarity and wealways try to put the music first."

Double Portrait (Blue Note) with Charlapand Renee Rosnes spotlights a couple of pianistsuniquely positioned to exude empathy in theircollaborative work. They're not only married butalso own a pair of Steinways nestled together intheir West Orange home, so they have moreopportunities to play together than most duopiano partners. It all helps to make this albumworthy of the overused cliché "seamless." In fact, listening to it you soon forget trying to hear theindividual player and just luxuriate in the richmosaic of music they create. As Charlap says,"we didn't say 'if you play this, I'll play that.' It'smore intuitive. When we sit down at the key-boards together, we trust our instincts and themusical result is organic."

That organic result is evident immediatelyon the propulsive opening track, the Brazilian-inflected Lyle Mays tune "Chorinho," which rollsalong with such highly synched playing that itsounds like a single twenty-fingered pianist. The slower Jobim bossa "Double Rainbow" hasthe pianists shifting roles from rhythm to leadso effortlessly that the transitions from one toanother can't be pinpointed. The two pianists'past associations and enduring musical inter-ests are featured equally, with Rosnes recallingformer leaders (Wayne Shorter's "Ana Maria," aballad building to a grand emotional pitch; JoeHenderson's "Inner Urge," given a tidal flow anddramatic momentum enhanced by rumbling lefthands); and Charlap's penchant for GreatAmerican Songbook classics like "My Man'sGone Now" and "Dancing in the Dark." Rosnesthe composer is also represented by "The SarosCycle," with its cyclical form suggesting a round. And there's tongue-in-cheek in the couple's clos-

ing number, Frank Loesser's "Never Will IMarry," performed as a frothy conversation.

Meanwhile, Bruce Barth's and SteveWilson's Home: Live in Columbia, Missouri(wealwaysswing.org), was recorded during ahouse concert, with Barth contributing fouroriginals to go along with three standards.Although Barth and Wilson hadn't performed asa duo before, they have a long history - over twodecades - of working together in small bandsand even jamming at the pianist's home. As aresult, this is another pair in total synch in theduo format, right down to Wilson accommodat-ing his tonal dynamics to the intimate situation.

The album opens with Cole Porter's familiar"All Through the Night," but not as we're used tohearing it. Barth uses an arrangement adaptedfrom Phil Woods, utilizing that saxophonist'schord changes and 7/4 time signature. It's thelongest track (11:12) on the CD, full of sustainedinvention from opening solos through flexibletrades brimming with interactive responses.Four Barth originals follow, ranging from "TheWays of the West," with hints of cowboy moviesoundtracks; and "Keep It Moving!," defyingexpectations with a bluesy flow interrupted bystuttering, stop-go slowdowns; to the tender, rhapsodic "L.C." (one of two tracks on whichWilson plays soprano); and a jittery, multi-tem-

JOANNE BRACKEENJAZZ STANDARD / JULY 29-AUGUST 1The only female alumnus of an Art Blakey Jazz Messengers group, Brackeen is a pro-lific composer as well as a technically brilliant keyboardist, equally at home in cozypiano rooms and as part of hard bop bands. Fi-Fi Goes to Heaven, her 1986 quintetalbum with Branford Marsalis on alto, remains a listener favorite. Brackeen will becelebrating her birthday - which actually falls on July 26 - at this club by leading aquartet with a tenor saxophonist (Mark Turner). It's a format with which she's quitefamiliar, having backed such illustrious tenor voices as Charles Lloyd, Joe Hendersonand Stan Getz. Rounding out her band this time are bassist Ugonna Okegwo anddrummer Jonathan Blake. GK

JERRY WELDONRUE 57 / JULY 29It's fitting that one of tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon's first gigs was with LionelHampton's big band in the early 1980s - Weldon was born to strut, swagger and stompthrough "Flying Home." Weldon is a ferocious player with a big, joyously aggressivesound that, had he come up in an earlier era, would have been right at home up on aJazz at the Philharmonic stage trading licks with Flip Phillips and Illinois Jacquet.Weldon went on to star in Harry Connick Jr.'s big band and his soulful style has foundhim gigs with organists Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Joey DeFrancesco, aswell as a spot as one of the tenors in a Jazz at Lincoln Center salute to Dexter Gordon. At this gig he'll be in a more intimate duo setting with guitarist Joe Cohn. GK

JEFF NEWELLBARGEMUSIC / JULY 26Can you imagine a band capable of wringing new freshness out of overly familiar num-bers like "Amazing Grace" and "The Washington Post March"? OK, here's one.Newell's highly invigorating New-Trad Octet serves as an outlet for his considerablearranging talents and reflects his long-term fascination with New Orleans traditions. With the ensemble, he's integrated that city's "second line" brass band sounds with amodern rhythm section that might include electric keyboards and guitar. His broadinterests also extend to old-time gospel hymns and Sousa marches. It's all reflected ona compelling 2007 CD called Brownstone (Blujazz), which will hopefully be availablefor purchase onboard. Yep, the venue is a vessel permanently moored at Brooklyn'sFulton Landing. It's truly a great place to enjoy live music. PB

ENRICO PIERANUNZIVILLAGE VANGUARD / JULY 6-11Now in his early 60s, Enrico Pieranunzi is arguably Italy's leading jazz pianist, onewho's worked with a host of stellar jazz musicians, from Chet Baker and Lee Konitzto Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer and Jim Hall. As a stylist, he borrows from both main-stream modernists like McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Bill Evans, and romantic nine-teenth century composers. His writing bridges the divide between jazz and classical. For this gig he'll be leading an all-star trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummerPaul Motian - both of whom were critical parts of Evans' trios. GK

LEW SOLOFFIRIDIUM / JULY 14A classically trained player (Juilliard and Eastman) of remarkable stamina and taste, trumpeter Soloff's roots lie deep in New York jazz soil. Mentored early on by band-leader Machito and somewhat later by Latin jazz maven Dizzy Gillespie, he honorsboth in his melding of swing traditions with the fiery Africa-derived rhythms of Cuba.Famed for his ease with high-note pyrotechnics, he's also capable of playing balladswith exquisite tenderness. Over the decades, Lew's been a founding member of bothBlood, Sweat & Tears and a band called Manhattan Jazz Quintet that frequentlytopped Japanese sales charts, as well as a valued component in ensembles led by GilEvans and Carla Bley. At Iridium, though, it'll be his horn mixing it up with percus-sionists Mauricio Herrera and Jhairf Sala, keyboardist Axel Tosca and electric bassistAlvaro Benavides. PB

KAROLINA STRASSMAYERSAINT PETER'S CHURCH / JULY 18 AND 22Saxophonist Karolina Strassmayer may be from Austria and now based in Cologne,Germany (where she's the first woman to play in the WDR Big Band; she also was inDiva, the all-female big band, while based in New York), but you won't confuse hermusic with the European chamber jazz associated with labels like ECM. On alto sax(she also plays soprano) Strassmayer plays with a biting, acerbic tone and post-bopattack reminiscent of Jackie McLean or Steve Coleman. Around NYC in July (other gigsinclude After Hours at Dizzy's and a night in Brooklyn) she'll be appearing withKLARO!, a quartet co-led by her husband, the drummer Drori Mondlak; they’ll bejoined by bassist Boris Koslov (of Mingus ensembles fame) and vibist Stefan Bauer. GK

SCOTT WENDHOLTSMALLS / JULY 23 AND 24"Can we get Wendholt?" must be one of the most frequently asked questions amonglocal jazz bandleaders, since this polished post-bop trumpeter is clearly among thebusiest sidemen in town. Were we to list his association for recordings and live dates onthese two pages, we'd doubtless still be short of space. Scott's a key member of theVanguard's Monday night big band, of course. But he's also heading up a somewhat dif-ferent kind of group on these two nights: a pianoless quartet bringing together tenorsaxophonist Adam Kolker, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Victor Lewis. As faras Wendholt-led CDs, the most recent is What Goes Unsaid (Double-Time), cut elevenyears ago with Eric Alexander sharing front-line duties. It's a splendid piece of work,by turns crackling and rhapsodic. PB

STEVE KROONPARLOR JAZZ / JULY 10Latin percussionists are usually thought of as in-your-face extroverts, flamboyant andintense in their rhythmic heat. Not Steve Kroon - it's no coincidence that one of his longassociations was with the romantic soul crooner Luther Vandross. Or that Kroon hasalso worked in the bands of bassist Ron Carter, who likes to have his sound out front.Whether playing congas or an array of little chimes, bells and hand percussion, Kroonbrings a subtlety and sophistication to his role, like a talented chef adding just the rightspice. "A Lot of guys today just play too much," says Kroon of the percussionist frater-nity. He'll be applying his less-is-more approach to the Latin jazz of his own sextet, fea-turing vibist Brian Carrott, at this Fort Greene house party gig. GK

MARC JOHNSONDIZZY'S / JULY 1-4A bassist who can be fleet and dexterous while still maintaining a deep, resonant tone,Johnson has led such adventurous, genre-melding groups as Bass Desires and theunusual sextet that appeared on his 2005 Shades of Jade album (tenor sax, guitar, piano, organ, bass and drums) which made many critics' top ten lists. One of his firstmajor trio jobs was with Bill Evans during the pianist's last two years. At Dizzy's,Johnson will be part of a rhythm section supporting his wife, the pianist-singer ElianeElias, in a salute to her native Brazil with guitarist Rubens de la Corte and drummerRafael Barata. He'll also back Enrico Pieranunzi at the Vanguard. GK

KEVIN DORNGARAGE / JULY 2 AND 16The words trad jazz conjure up images of older gents in boaters and sleeve garters play-ing Dixieland, but drummer Kevin Dorn's Big 72, which began life as the TraditionalJazz Collective (TJC), sports no costumes and has a membership too young to crackAARP. The thirty-something Dorn is one of a coterie of young musicians in the NewYork area revitalizing and reimagining trad jazz, from New Orleans and Chicago toSwing. Originally inspired by Gene Krupa, Dorn has kept the two-beat and four-beatswing for such trad groups as Jim Cullum's Jazz Band in San Antonio, Vince Giordano'sNighthawks and, every Wednesday night, with the Louis Armstrong Centennial Bandat Birdland. These Big 72 dates are part of an on-going bi-weekly gig at the Garage. GK

STRING OF PEARLSBICKFORD THEATER / JULY 12Veteran performers who've each enjoyed successful solo careers, these singers firstcombined their talents for a nostalgia-focused concert to form a cohesive group.Over fifteen years, the three voices - Sue Halloran, Jeanne O'Connor and Holli Ross- have been bringing vintage "girl group" harmonies ensconced in fresh swing andLatin arrangements to stages around the U.S. and abroad. These women re-inventsongs that recall the big band sounds of Basie and Glenn Miller and the hipapproach of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, in programs also enriched by their ownBrazilian-flavored originals. They've already issued some fine albums (one includ-ing their own catchy treatment of "Sukiyaki"), with a much-anticipated live CD nowin the works.

JAVON JACKSONSHANGHAI JAZZ / JULY 9 AND 10A charismatic, informed saxophonist whose edgy yet pleasing approach happilydominates ten CDs already under his belt as leader - including seven on Blue Note- Jackson cut his musical teeth with Blakey's Messengers in the 1980s. Followingthat stint, he went on to record with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones,Cedar Walton and Stanley Turrentine. He's comfortable playing both straightaheadand funk. And there's no mistaking his distinctive sound for anyone else's. The lat-est disc under his name - Once Upon A Melody (Palmetto) - quickly shot to top sloton jazz radio airplay charts. And no wonder, since it's full of catchy tunes composedby Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins and Mr. Jackson himself.

PETER HANDCENTENARY THEATER / JULY 31A New York native, this guitarist, composer and arranger has, for many years, beenperforming in settings ranging from solo showcases to big bands. As a teenager, hisadmiration for B.B. King and Albert King prompted him to form his own bluesbands even before he entered Berklee. Subsequent work with the likes of CarmenLundy, George Coleman and Lee Konitz added further luster to his resumé. On theheels of his recent Savant Records CD, The Wizard of Jazz: A Tribute to HaroldArlen, he's now directing an impressive 16-piece band with tenor saxophonistHouston Person as guest star. That's the treat in store for those attending the finalconcert in this year's Centenary College Jazz-in-July series.

BRANDON MCCUNENEWARK MUSEUM / JULY 8 AND CECIL’S / JULY 23 AND 24This Chicago native now makes his home in Newark. Over the past eighteen years,he's accomplished quite a lot as pianist, organist, drummer, trumpeter, bassist, andchoir director, always with a keen focus in the jazz, classical and gospel genres.During 1998-99, he traveled extensively overseas, having been tapped as U.S. JazzAmbassador to Africa through a tough national selection process. Over the longhaul, McCune has been a much in demand sideman for such artists as AbbeyLincoln, Nnenna Freelon, Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Russell Malone andLenora Zenzalai Helm. His talents as accompanist and arranger can be heard onFreelon's new Homefree CD. A forthcoming album under his own name will furtherhighlight his considerable writing skills.

FOR MARIA SCHNEIDER, WORKING ONa commission adds an extra buzz of anxiety

and inspiration to the process of writing, rehearsing and preparing to perform new music. In early June, the composer/arranger was in themidst of working on her second ArtistShare com-mission project composition, which she'll debutat Birdland on July 20-24.

Schneider normally keeps regular workinghours, getting down to business soon after shewakes up, then keeping at it steadily throughoutthe day. But thinking of the "20-something or30-something" people who have contributed tothe ArtistShare commission fund makes a differ-ence. "I could just be here writing a piece, butI'm writing a piece people are participating in, sothe pressure is on," Schneider says. "You don'twant to disappoint people who trust you likethat, just as you never want to disappointyour father."

For a financial commitment of $125 to$2,500, participants get a bird's-eye view ofSchneider's composing process, with perksincluding access to rehearsals, credit on the pub-lished score, and even phone updates from thecomposer. "Sometimes you write something andit happens easily, but some of the pieces I lovemost were hard at the beginning," she says. "Theride getting there is a little bumpy, especially ifyou're trying something new. Knowing peopleare going to see [the process] adds a dynamicof fear."

The composer has come to recognize thatthere are several stages she'll go through whenworking on a fresh project. Starting a majorwork often triggers dreams of trying to walk butnot making any headway, as if "the wind isagainst me or I'm struggling to get through tall

grass." As rehearsals begin, Schneider aims tocommunicate her vision of what she wants to theband. "Sometimes I have a hard time getting itto happen," she says. "It never gets any easier. Iworry that I've lost my touch." And then there isprocrastination. "That's the fear. You put off thework, then the real fear kicks in and you reallyhave to do it."

Schneider sounds remarkably lightheartedwhen she talks about the various steps, oftenpunctuating the conversation with a laugh.Besides expecting the anxiety, she accepts it. "Ifyou're constantly trying new things you'realways a beginner," she says. "If you're really anartist, that's how it is. You always have ques-tions, and when you get the answers you havenew questions. You've got to enjoy the process."

To relax, Schneider has found that "gettinginto nature is centering." She enjoys going to thepark, riding her bike and, especially, bird watch-ing. "There's a short birding season in New York, but it's the best. It really helps." Though shedoesn't meditate, she says writing music canitself be meditative. "When you get into the zone, time freezes. You start creating and real timeflies by."

And then there's the feedback and supportshe receives from her ArtistShare participants. When Schneider dropped her involvement withmainstream recording companies in favor of pro-ducing her work through ArtistShare, she waswarned that she might not be happy with thechange. "People said at the start that theInternet is so cold, it won't be like having yourmusic in record stores - remember them? But for meit's much, much, much more personal," she adds.

Some of the commissioners have become herfriends through emails, calls and meetings atrehearsals and gigs. "Their support lifts you tomake the trip. A huge amount of work goes into[the music]. Their support and encouragement isan incredible thing." She likens that support to"playing a game on your home field. There's acertain pressure but playing for fans who really, really care generally gives the team an advantage."

Besides the ArtistShare commission,Schneider is writing for the Kronos Quartet andworking on classical compositions to be per-formed by soprano Dawn Upshaw, theAustralian Chamber Orchestra and some mem-bers of Schneider's band; plus another work tobe performed at Carnegie Hall next spring byUpshaw and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra."It's hard to keep all of the balls in the air andstill have a life. I could be working 24/7," shesays. "Music reflects your life and, if you do noth-ing else, you burn out. The changes in your musicreflect the changes in your life, in a good way."

In spite all of the work, anxiety and planningthat goes into composition, Schneider is happy toadmit that "in the end, some of my best thingswere mistakes - maybe an accident in the studio. What emerged in the end was not according toplan. The mistakes trigger something. It's as ifsomeone up there was saying: 'She has no con-cept. Throw her a bone.' "Well, sometimes a boneis just a bone. But in the right hands, a bone canbecome the key ingredient in a complex and sat-isfying broth."

Maria Schneider conducts her orchestraat Birdland on July 20-24.

WITH A SOLID INTERNATIONAL REPU-tation - and with his latest album, The

Groover (Savant), holding steady at number-oneon radio popularity charts for several weeks in arow - keyboard player Mike LeDonne ponderedrecently on the roundabout route that broughthim to prominence in the Apple from his home-town of Bridgeport.

"My father ran a shop called LeDonne'sMusic Box. He was also a singer and guitaristwho led a popular working trio which reflectedhis own personal admiration for Nat Cole, exceptthat my dad's group included vibes rather thanpiano. When I was ten, I was already leading myown little organ group with guitar and drumsdoing hits by James Brown, Sam & Dave andWilson Pickett. I played the horn parts with myright hand, bass lines with my left hand andeven sang. Then when I was fourteen, my dadbought me a real Hammond, which he found ata repossession sale for $2000.00. That priceincluded a Leslie speaker - and a dolly to movethe whole thing around.

"When I first came to New York, it was aspart of a ten-piece band called Widespread JazzOrchestra, which specialized in black big bandmusic of the 1940s. I'd been studying at NewEngland Conservatory, then joined Widespread,

which was wildly popular at the time. We wereeven on salary. And we worked like crazy, believe me - performing nearly every day. We'dhead up to Boston, then come back here imme-diately. Down to Washington for a one-nighter,then back to New York right away. Hard work,no time for outside gigs and all for $120.00 aweek. But this was during the late 70s, beforerents began to skyrocket, and that was suffi-cient. My own rent was just $120.00 per monthand I was sharing an apartment with otherWidespread members like Michael Hashim andTad Shull.

"It's hard to believe now, but when I hit town, the main thing going on seemed to be the moretraditional stuff. There was little bebop happen-ing. Widepread and Scott Hamilton's band wereabout the only established groups workingsteadily. Anyway, I started dropping in atJimmy Ryan's club in Midtown, where the focuswas on what you might call Dixieland. RoyEldridge was featured there during that period. So after I learned all the Dixieland standards,I'd put on a jacket and then patiently wait myturn to go up onto the stand and play a bit withRoy. I fit in because I knew all about Earl Hinesand Teddy Wilson and Hank Jones. Tom Harrellused to show up at Jimmy Ryan's as well, but hewas about the only real young modernist cat whosat in. I was always tickled pink to be there - butnervous as well. Then in the early 80s, I endedup working with Benny Goodman, Ruby Braffand other greats like that.

"It was really through my good friend JamesWilliams that I ended up playing piano for solong behind Milt Jackson. Widespread was doinga weeklong festival in Molde, Norway. TheModern Jazz Quartet was also on the bill. Everynight, Milt and John Lewis used to hear us andseemed to love our repertoire: Ellington, Basie,Lunceford and so on. I was his regular pianistfor eleven years, as well as his musical directorfor the final five. Cedar Walton had that gig atthe outset, followed by James and then me.

"The organ? Well, it's a whole different ani-mal from the piano. A beast, really. But it has itsrewards in that I enjoy complete control of thegroup. If things don't groove, it's my fault entire-ly. I mean, I have no bass player to blame. Overthe years, I've gotten used to the split-mindthing with hands and feet. But believe it or not,in the beginning, the hardest aspect for me tomaster was the volume pedal. It works sort oflike a car's accelerator and early on, I'd alwaysbe pedal-to-the-medal, with people coveringtheir ears and yelling, 'Too loud!' As a pianist, you're not used to dealing with that for yourexpression. Well, now I live with my wife anddaughter in a Manhattan high rise and can evenplay my Hammond at two in the morning with-out disturbing anyone. There's a switch thatallows me to cut the volume down to almostnothing. You can't do that on a piano."

Mike LeDonne plays solo piano atBryant Park every lunch-time on July 5-9.His trio featuring bassist Buster Williamsand drummer Joe Farnsworth performs atKitano on July 23-24. He’s also featured onorgan most Tuesday evenings at Smoke. Atthe same club he’ll join Frank Wess, PeterWashington and Kenny Washington for aHank Jones tribute on July 9-10.

Interpreting an iconTenor saxophonist Virginia Mayhew was stilla student when she heard a Mass by Mary LouWilliams, complete with gospel choir, at one ofthe first women in jazz festivals in Kansas City."It was so rockin'," she recalls. More recently,Virginia has been delving deeply into the lifeand work of the pianist/composer whom DukeEllington described as "soul on soul" and "per-petually contemporary." To prepare for her proj-ect "Mary Lou Williams: The Next 100 Years,"Virginia didn't just spend time listening to andtranscribing Williams' music. She alsoresearched the Williams archives at Rutgers, digging through a lifetime of paperwork such asbig band charts, notes on cocktail napkins andlyrics Mary Lou had jotted down over the years."The idea was to take her music and keep mov-ing," Virginia says of her project. "We're not arepertory band. But you can reinterpret MaryLou's music, it's fresh and contemporary." As amusician, Williams was "always pushing, tryingto evolve. That's why she was ahead of the curveso often. "Virginia is bringing her own point ofview to the material. "We're doing the 'Act ofContrition' free-ish, not in an odd meter but outof meter," she says. Virginia also wrote a coupleof originals for the project, including "5 for MaryLou," which she describes as "a funky, slow 5/4piece. I was trying to maintain what I feel is herthing. The emphasis is on Mary Lou's music. Shewas so gifted, so amazing. She was music." Hear"Mary Lou Williams: The Next 100 Years" atSmalls on July 8, and be sure to congratulateVirginia on winning her fourth-degree blackbelt. She's heading out to Montana in August toteach a music/dance workshop with pianistFrancesca Tanksley and others.

In Russian, with loveAt the start of her singing career, LynetteWashington was offered gigs at Russian nightclubs in Brooklyn and Queens. "They wanted to

hear American music, like jazz and disco andstandards. And they wanted to hear Russiansongs," she says. To satisfy the crowds' taste,Lynette learned to sing phonetically in nine lan-guages. "Europeans always speak many morelanguages than Americans. I learned what thekey words where and what they meant, so Icould execute a song properly," she says. "I wasborn to sing and I can adapt to anything."Lynette became so popular within the Russiancommunity that she had an 11-year run in theclubs. She toured the world, including Russiaand Australia, performing the multi-lingualrepertoire she learned in the outer boroughs. She also sang with U2, Peter Gabriel, ArethaFranklin, Celia Cruz and others in concerts, movies and commercials. "I didn't classify myselfat the time, now I focus on jazz," Lynette says. She recently released her fourth CD,Kaleidoscope (GuavaJamm), containing tuneslike "Doxy," "Stolen Moments," "Dat Dere," anda bluesy version of "Get Back." "I tried to selectthings that meant something to me," she says. "Iwanted things that are different, but that worktogether and have a message. I'm a message per-son. I like to make the songs live and breathe, make them my own. I sing with feeling becauseI have a heavy rooting in gospel." Lynette hastwo Jazzmobile gigs coming up, in MountVernon on July 20 and in Harlem on July 30.

Study with world renowned vocalist-composer-arranger,

Chris McNulty. Students of vocal jazz wanting to prepare

for college entry or masters level program can study ear

training and improvisation, utilizing "pivot system"

approach for learning chord recognition, exploring basic

to advanced II, V, I & modal harmony, basic piano, rhythm

transcriptions. Breathing technique, phrasing, interpreta-

tion and repertoire development if required.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with manyinteresting photos and links.

David Merrick once produced a Broadway show that needed a one-man band. Al Astonehad a Cordovox setup that created an unusual number of sound combinations, and hearranged to demonstrate his abilities for Merrick. The audition was held in one ofBroadway's older theaters. A stagehand provided an electrical line for Al to plug into.Unfortunately, the power source he connected it to was Direct Current. Merrick said, "Anytime you're ready." Al turned on his system, and the whole thing blew, creating a display ofsparks and smoke. Merrick asked, "Is that your opening?"

A lady called Robbie Scott to book a band for an affair she was planning. When Robbiegave her a price, she seemed to think it was too much money. Robbie told her, "You know, the musicians I use are first class professionals. Each one is a virtuoso on his particularinstrument." She thought a moment and said, "Don't you have some others that maybe aren'tso good?"

A Moment You Missed by FranKaufman Hot House

Contributing PhotographerIf you want something done, give it to abusy person, right? Saxophonist WayneEscoffery proves the point. Here he is, atPS 13 in Manhattan on May 27, balancinghis checkbook between takes. The concertfor middle school students was producedby About The Swing a group that bringsjazz musicians into NYC schools. Fromthe look on Wayne's face, everythingchecks out.
