WINNING SPINSTWO SINGERS WHO RELY MORE

on subtlety and interpretation thanbravura vocal pyrotechnics have newalbums out. A relative newcomer, AiméeAllen is a Pittsburgh native who moved toParis after college and formed a group ded-icated to bossa and jazz, Les BossaNovices. She's now back in New York.Chris McNulty is a veteran Australianjazz/cabaret singer also based in the BigApple. Allen's latest CD is marked by asense of youthful exuberance, a definite "I-can-do" attitude. McNulty's is an attemptto understand and work through the loss ofa son, the music suffused with longing andmelancholy.Matter of Time, Aimée Allen (Azuline),

mixes the singer’s own compositions withstandards, both bossas and Americansongbook. Allen has a compact, containedvoice with a velvety edge, which sheemploys with precision on some tricky, convoluted lyrics, mostly her own. The titleoriginal is filled with snappy internalrhymes and suggestive of multiple per-spectives. So, fittingly, it begins and endsthe CD. First heard as a rhythmically elas-tic interaction with guitarist RomeroLubambo and a bassist, it returns to con-clude the album over the steady momen-tum of Allen's accompanying trio: pianistToru Dodo, bassist Francois Moutin anddrummer Jacob Melchior.

Lubambo comes back for three moretracks, two bossas emphasizing the fluidi-ty of the interplay of guitar and vocal, including a relaxed, not fervidly, sensual"The Island." He also accompanies Allen onher one foray into French, the boite-ready"Qu'est-ce qu'on est bien ici" which trans-lates as "How Sweet it is Here with You."

Allen can be prolix, especially in hermore uptempo originals, seeming to cramtogether too many words, as on "SoulCargo." However, when she slows down toballad or torch tempo, her lyrics connectemotionally. "Sometimes You Just Know,"about emotion versus reason, has a haunt-ing resonance, and her setting of PatMetheny's "The Space Between" is a con-vincing love song.

She can be quite inventive with stan-dards; she and Moutin prance around thebeat of "My Romance" in an exploratorymanner before the trio establishes a waltzframe for a pair of choruses that stretchthe melodic contours of the Rodgers andHart tune. "Close Your Eyes" rides over a

snappy accompaniment by bass and brush-es, expanding into a second chorus mixingmelody with parlando. And Allen brings aneasy swing to "Out of Nowhere," taking lit-tle liberties with the melody in classic jazzfashion.Eternal, Chris McNulty (Palmetto), is a

somber, elegiac album enriched by intri-cate, resonant arrangements and orches-trations by Steve Newcomb for a chamberensemble featuring woodwinds and stringsthat interacts seamlessly with a core jazztrio. McNulty's sense of loss becomes apowerful subtext, altering, and at manytimes enriching, the meaning of songs, casting them in a new light.

The most plaintive piece may be "YouAre There,” her lament for her son withsuch lines as "I see your face everywhere/ alittle boy dancing/ you are there." But whatis most revelatory is the new depthsbrought to the standards "Nature Boy,""What Are You Doing the Rest of YourLife?" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"by the emotional context as well as by theprobing chamber arrangements.

McNulty takes full advantage of a voicewith a light tone but surprising breadthand suppleness, essaying songs that chal-lenge a singer's range and control like BillyStrayhorn's "A Flower is a LovesomeThing," on which she embellishes thealready ornate lines with melismatic flour-ishes as her voice rises ethereally into adelicate stratosphere.

Among the unexpected riches of thisalbum is an obscure Bob Dorough song,"Love Came on Stealthy Fingers," with suchlines as "I know the sweetness and the dan-ger/ and oh yes, I know the pain" and "wemight as well be happy while we may." Shebrings a similar heartbreaking poignancy toCy Coleman's "With Every Breathe I Take,"echoed by dolorous cello lines.

The verse of Hoagy Carmichael's"Stardust" ends without giving way to therefrain, altering the meaning by closing, indevastating fashion, with a repeated "loveis now the music of the years gone by."Because of McNulty and her collaborators'exquisite artistry, what could have been amaudlin exercise in self-pitying grief hasbecome a musical triumph.

Aimée Allen celebrates the releaseof her new CD at The Cutting Room onJune 16. Chris McNulty appears onJune 16, at 54 Below.

21Sung photo by Kat Villacorta.

" THE FIRST SONG I WROTE THISyear I titled ‘Into the Unknown’,” notes

pianist and composer Helen Sung. "I reallylike the piece and I am thinking that it'smy theme this year in terms of how I wantto approach being a musician and artist."

It's an appropriate theme for Sung. While she has long been hailed as one ofthe most remarkable pianists on the scenetoday, in 2014 she reached new heights interms of broader reception and criticalaccolades with the release of the extraordi-nary Anthem for a New Day. An ambitiousand intensely rewarding album that notonly showcases her remarkable keyboardskills, Anthem demonstrates the breadthof her dynamic compositional talents to anextent not seen on her previous efforts.Indeed, with Anthem, Sung revealed to alarger listening audience what many hadknown for years: that she is one of the mostexceptional artists performing today.

Given the musical ground covered inSung's career to date, it is somewhat sur-prising to learn that her entrance into jazzcame comparatively late. "I was almostdone with my junior year in college when afriend of mine invited me to hear HarryConnick Jr," she recalls. "I was a typicalclassical major who was in the practiceroom all the time, so I didn't know who hewas. She convinced me to go, and we wentto hear his big band. They were entertain-ing, but when he sat down to play somesolo piano, I remember thinking 'Howcome nobody told me about this?' He'd doall these things on the piano you weren'tsupposed to do, and he was swinging!"

That concert initiated a pivot for Sungas she enrolled in the school's beginningjazz piano course and started trackingdown all the books and records she could

find, on top of her classical workload. "I feltlike I had to find out more about jazz and Ididn't want to fake it," she recalls. "Thismusic is majestic: it's huge; it's deep andit's profound. The more I studied, the moreI wanted to know."

With pressure from her parents to com-plete her classical degrees and even to pur-sue a PhD, Sung graduated with aMaster's and began to look at doctoral pro-grams in classical music. Receiving mate-rials from the New England Conservatory, she noticed a short description of theThelonious Monk Institute of Jazz andapplied for it. "I don't know how I got in,"she says, "but I credit that experience withmaking me who I am as an artist. It gaveme the time I needed to catch up, practiceand experiment. I always tell people thatmy musical emancipation came with jazz.Even in difficult moments where I askmyself why I do this, I know that it'sbecause I love this music and know whatit's meant to me personally."

Having graduated and gigged heavilyaround Boston, Sung moved to New Yorkin 1999 and soon found herself at a pivotalmoment in her career. While enjoying thesideman work she took on, she realized shewas not bringing in enough to support her-self financially and took the leap to becom-ing a bandleader.

Beginning with the release of a series ofhighly acclaimed recordings, Sung alsostarted to express her burgeoning work asa composer. "Ron Carter always would say'If you want to develop your own voice, you've got to write your own music,'" shesays. "From my classical background, thiswas quite new. It's very humbling to writemusic and hear it being played. Althoughit felt initially that circumstances hadforced me into becoming a bandleader, inretrospect it's been very good, because Ilove playing other people's music, but havecome to love playing my own too."

This month, Sung returns to SmokeJazz and Supper Club for her annual per-formance, bringing her quartet—JohnEllis on saxophone, Reuben Rogers on bassand Donald Edwards on drums—for threenights at the club. She is also preparing toembark on a new recording project, Sungwith Words, marking her first album thatwill feature vocals.

As she continues to expand her paletteas a composer, Sung keeps the audience atthe forefront of her mind and her artisticplanning. "I want the audience to enjoy theshow; I want the set to be engaging," sheexplains. "I want people to feel like they'rein an unfolding adventure."

Helen Sung performs at Smoke Jazzand Supper Club June 26-28 withJohn Ellis on saxophone, ReubenRogers on bass and Donald Edwardson drums.

FOR CONTRASTING GIGS, NOTH-ing beats trumpeter Terell Stafford in

the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra andin Matt Wilson's Arts & Crafts: bands hehas been with over the last decade. In theVVJO, he's part of a traditional big bandtrumpet section, a cog in the wheel of a for-midable jazz machine. But in drummerWilson's Arts & Crafts, he's the onlyhorn—a relative rarity for trumpet play-ers—in a quartet rounded out by a rhythmsection where the pianist, Larry Goldings, doubles on organ and keyboards. ThatStafford flourishes in both situations is atribute to his versatility and competence.

Stafford is also releasing a tributealbum of his own this month: BrotherLeeLove (Capri), a celebration of the music ofLee Morgan, the hard bop trumpeterwhose life was cut short by a bullet whenhe was only 33, in 1972. As a player withroots in the Philadelphia area, he feels akinship with Morgan as a key member ofPhilly's jazz pantheon.

"I love everything about the wayMorgan plays," Stafford says from hishome in Hamilton Township NJ. "I've real-ly wanted to play this project that has beenon my heart and mind for a while. It wasreally fun to do."

Of Morgan's music Stafford says, "I lovethe soulfulness of it, the advanced har-monies of it yet Lee's music is alwaysfriendly to the listener. Every time youhear him, he can articulate his style on anytune, uptempo or ballad, boogaloo or shuf-fle; he's always present. And for that ittook so much control to play his music; it'sno joke to play."

On the album, Stafford and his band-mates Tim Warfield, tenor sax; BruceBarth, piano; Peter Washington, bass andDana Hall, drums, essay seven Morganoriginals as well as one of his favorite bal-lads, "Candy." Stafford also contributes anoriginal tribute, "Favor," highlighted by astunning opening trumpet cadenza.

It's no accident that Stafford can play abrilliant, a cappella trumpet solo like that.He actually began his musical career as aclassical trumpet player, earned a Master'sin the subject at Rutgers University and iscurrently not just the director of jazz stud-ies at Temple University in Philadelphia, but also the chair of instrumental studiesin the classical music department. Hisinterest in jazz wasn't fully piqued until hewas already in his 20s pursuing hisadvanced degree.

"Halfway through my first year atRutgers I seriously became interested andwanted to learn jazz," he says. "I hadplayed in big bands in high school and col-lege [undergraduate at the University ofMaryland] but never really took it serious-ly. It wasn't anything that was planned; Ijust wanted to play jazz in addition to clas-sical music. But my teacher didn't want meto, and because I was at Rutgers doing theclassical thing, it wasn't so accepted for aclassical major to be playing jazz."

Rather than ruffle feathers at Rutgersby playing with musicians from the jazzstudies program there, Stafford wouldcatch a train to Washington DC onTuesdays to join a jam session at theTakoma Station club hosted by saxophon-ist Bobby Watson in the early 1990s."When I met Bobby Watson, I was sold onjazz," he explains, "so when he invited me,I went out on the road with him and said,'This is what I want to do.'"

Stafford was just finishing up hisMaster's degree program when Watson'sinvitation came and it was either take hisfinal exams or join the jazz band. "I knewthe program wouldn't allow me to go out onthe road if it were with a jazz group, so Itold them I was going on tour with theRobert Watson Chamber Ensemble." Thatcharade ended when one of the classicaldeans at Rutgers saw a picture of theBobby Watson band in Downbeat maga-zine, but Stafford returned to get hisdegree a year later.

Besides the Lee Morgan music, Staffordis also pursuing another project involvingPhiladelphia musicians. He's organizedthe Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, a 17-piece big band consisting of musicians fromand/or associated with the Philly jazzscene. "We just did a concert this pastweek with Benny Golson," he says, "andwe've had Jimmy Heath and RandyBrecker as concert guests in the past. What I would love to do is bring some ofthem together with the orchestra and do arecording to highlight the great contribu-tions of Philadelphia to jazz."

The Terell Stafford Quintet withTim Warfield, tenor sax; Bruce Barth, piano; Peter Washington, bass andBilly Williams, drums, features themusic of Lee Morgan at the VillageVanguard, June 2-7.

ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATEBy Elzy Kolb

Welcome back!Portland Oregon-based pianist/compos-

er Kerry Politzer is looking forward to areunion on several fronts when she comesto the Big Apple this month. Besides hav-ing a chance to spend Father's Day withher dad, Politzer will get together with along-time colleague and collaborator, saxophonist Laura Dreyer for a gig atTomi Jazz.

The two became friends years ago whenthey both were part of the Diva JazzOrchestra. "We have a long musical histo-ry. I was on Laura's first album, FreeFlying Bird," Politzer says. "We talk all thetime and thought it would be fun to do amostly Brazilian collaborative effort whileI'm in town. We'll each bring some tunesand play them with a Brazilian rhythmsection and singer."

Politzer was a lifelong East Coasteruntil she and her husband, multi-instru-mentalist George Colligan, moved west awhile back, starting with a brief stay inManitoba Canada. "That didn't last long,"she says, laughing. "One 40-below winterwas enough." They have been in Portlandmore than three years and find it a betterfit. Politzer compares it positively withBrooklyn, citing public transportation, restaurants, shopping, urban amenitiesand the local music scene among her likes.

Though the City of Roses offers fewerjazz venues than the Big Apple, teachinghelps Politzer stay focused on her music."Teaching makes me think more aboutmusic and gets me in touch with what'simportant in music. I like problem solvingand giving each person something that willhelp them improve. I like to hip students tomusic they can learn from. I go through myalbums and listen for things that can helpeach one specifically."

Working on new music is also a priority."Composing is so important to playing; itfigures into improvising and helps make

jazz yours. Jazz has such a long tradition, and it can be hard to find your place in it,and composing definitely helps."

With two little boys at home, makingtime for writing presents a bit of a chal-lenge. "Getting into the creative zonerequires solitude," Politzer points out. Butkeeping up with her youngsters didn'tdeter her from writing all the tunes on herrecent release, Below the Surface (PJCE)."I had a blast writing the stuff; it was areal departure from my previous CDs. Astrong melody is always important to me,but I tried to use different rhythms andchanges, not just straight-ahead and notjust Brazilian. I tried to pull from a lot ofdifferent bags and had fun doing it."

A few tunes from the CD will likely befeatured at Tomi Jazz on June 16, markingtheir East Coast debut.

Influences near and farFrom the get-go, singer/composer

Lauren Henderson's parents exposed herto a wide range of music and cultures, including Caribbean, African Americanand Latin. "I have a lifelong boundary-crossing appreciation for music. I wasencouraged to appreciate other cultures, tohear everyone's story," she says. "I'm grate-ful that my parents were open-minded andaccepting."

She started piano lessons at age sevenand sang in church and school choirs.Despite her deep musical roots, she intend-ed to study psychology in college, until herfather, a longtime dean at MIT, advisedher, "If you pick classes that you're inter-ested in, you'll do well and enjoy them."Henderson followed his words of wisdomstraight to the music department. "Themusic people just pulled me in under theirwing," she recalls.

She did take some psychology classesand they resonated with her. "It comes inhandy in interpreting lyrics and I also liketo hear people, listen to their stories. I

write from personal experience, but alsowrite based on things people have told me."

Henderson earned degrees in music andHispanic studies and her interest in themusic of other cultures took her to Mexicoto explore its traditional and popular musicand to Spain to delve into flamenco singingand dance. "I feel like I can identify with alot of music. I want to pull from all theserich genres, but it can be overwhelmingwhen you love everything." To meld herinfluences, "I try to find a common thread,so it's not all over the place."

Her self-released new CD, A laMadrugada, includes a mix of standardsand recently written originals. Whencomposing, ideas for the rhythm typicallycome first. "The bass is especially impor-tant to me. I would love to learn to playbass." When a new rhythm comes tomind, Henderson uses her phone's voicememo function to capture the idea on thespot. "I could be on the train and starthumming a bass line into my phone. InNew York, it's easy; everyone is doingtheir own weird thing."

The words come next. "I alternate writ-ing songs in English and in Spanish: thathelps to balance the motifs a little more."At one time, Henderson would write lyricsthat could go on for pages, but she's come tothe conclusion that less is more and paresthem down. Once she's satisfied with thelyrics, "The rest comes to me. I write tohighlight the words that are most impor-tant to me."

Check out the results of her creativeprocess at Minton's June 16 whenHenderson celebrates A la Madrugada; inaddition to her originals, expect her tosprinkle in material from the GreatAmerican Songbook plus some Brazilianand Latin favorites.

Home on the stageDuring the second half of the 20th cen-

tury, Reno's lively casino culture made itone of the biggest little cities in the musicworld. Close to a dozen big bands andcountless combos were in full swing eachnight; the local musicians' union had hun-dreds of active members and after-hoursjams were widespread.

Growing up in Reno at the tail-end ofthose musical glory days, bass clefmaven/composer Brian Landrus knew by

age 12 that he was going to be a profes-sional musician. He credits life lessonslearned at the elbows of journeymen suchas saxophonist Rico Mordenti and drum-mer Gerry Genuario with showing him howto make it happen. "They taught me musicand how to earn a living," Landrus says.Though he started out on tenor, the oldpros urged him to get his chops together onother instruments to increase his employ-ment opportunities.

By his late teens, Landrus was doublingon multiple instruments in the orchestra atthe MGM hotel. "The producers asked if Icould play baritone. I didn't have one, but Ihad a year's contract with the show. I wentto the bank to get a loan to buy the baritoneand I fell in love with it. It was easy forbands to find tenor players, but thereweren't so many baritone players and I gotmore and more work."

Landrus was still focusing on tenorwhen he went to New EnglandConservatory of Music to study with BobBrookmeyer, who urged him to switch hisenergy to baritone. "The first thing I want-ed to do was build a vocabulary so I couldplay tenor solos on baritone; I wanted tobring the vocal quality of the tenor to it.The most important thing to me is tone."

He gravitated to other low instrumentsfor aesthetic and practical reasons: "Ipicked up the bass clarinet and loved it.And I had played flute for years, but wasstarting to get wrist and hand problems—my hands are too big, so I got an alto flutethen a bass flute. They fit me." And, as hismentors predicted, Landrus' versatility hasled to plenty of gigs with the likes ofEsperanza Spalding, Maria Schneider, theGil Evans Project, Rufus Reid and manyothers. Though Landrus' arsenal of axesisn't among those most commonly featured,"My goal is to play all my instruments likesolo instruments. People hear it and like it,and they add stuff for me to play."

Landrus has released six CDs as aleader. On his new one, The Deep Below(BlueLand) he is joined by drummer BillyHart and bassist Lonnie Plaxico on origi-nals and standards including "I'm a Fool toWant You," a favorite from Billie Holiday'sclassic Lady in Satin album. The three-some had never played it together beforeLandrus called it in the studio and theynailed it on the first take. "I wanted to keepit spontaneous. I wanted to record one ofBillie Holiday's tunes; it's her centennialand she was very influential on me. Ladyin Satin is one of my favorite albums; Inever listen to it without getting tears inmy eyes. So I counted it off, we played itand captured the vulnerability in the cut—I wanted that."

Landrus celebrates the release of TheDeep Below with Plaxico and Hart at theCornelia Street Café on June 18.

DAVID BERKMANSMALLS JAZZ CLUB / JUNE 10David Berkman came to New York in the mid-1980s and made his early mark as a side-man with Tom Harrell and Cecil McBee. The pianist began recording as a leader in thelate 1990s and gained attention for his harmonically rich compositions, which oftenhave unexpected twists. Berkman has a sublime playing style accented by a spirit ofadventure, economical but always captivating. To celebrate the release of his PalmettoCD Old and New Friends, his fifth for the label, Berkman is joined by an outstandingband including saxophonists Dayna Stephens, Billy Drewes and Adam Kolker, all ofwhom appear on his new album; bassist Ugonna Okegwo, who has frequently per-formed on the pianist's CDs, and drummer Johnathan Blake. BILLY HARPERTRIBECA PAC / JUNE 11One of the most thrilling saxophonists performing today, Billy Harper draws deeplyfrom the inspiration of John Coltrane while maintaining his own uniquely vital voiceand perspective. Sporting a hard-edged tone, Harper attacks music with astonishingvirtuosity that demonstrates a breathtaking harmonic vocabulary spoken in a musicalvoice firmly rooted in blues and gospel traditions. Since his earliest recorded efforts—notably the 1975 masterpiece Black Saint—Harper has consistently blazed remark-able trails in the music and has engaged like-minded collaborators on his artistic jour-neys. Harper has found a particular musical simpatico in pianist Randy Weston, andtheir four-decade collaboration yielded wonderful fruit with their critically acclaimedThe Roots of the Blues. They are reprising this project at their Highlights in Jazz per-formance at the Tribeca PAC. SH

L I G H TBRIAN CHARETTEGUITAR CENTER / JUNE 11Honored with first place as the Rising Star of Organ in the 2014 Downbeat Critics Poll,Brian Charette has hardly been a secret among fans of the Hammond B3. Charette'slight touch helps him achieve a distinctive sound on his instrument. A prolific compos-er and recording artist, Charette has proven himself to be a versatile, inventive song-writer and arranger equally at home in bop, post-bop, blues, funk and even reggae, while his sense of humor is frequently a part of his music as well. Charette's trio fea-tures guitarist Will Bernard and drummer Eric Kalb. This free event from 5-7 p.m. cel-ebrates the release of his new Posi-tone CD Alphabet City and includes an informalclinic between sets. KD

ABDULLAH IBRAHIMBLUE NOTE / JUNE 18-21South African folk melodies and spirituality are rooted deeply in pianist AbdullahIbrahim's music. He fled his homeland in 1963 to protest apartheid and Duke Ellingtonproduced his first recording several months later. Ibrahim formed his primary band, theseptet Ekaya (the Zulu word for "home"), in 1983. He returned to South Africa afterNelson Mandela's release from prison, and its Green Kalahari region is his home base.Ibrahim's new works and fresh take on older compositions show that anxiety andprotest have given way to calm and celebration of his country's vast beauty. This ver-sion of Ekaya includes Noah Jackson (bass, cello), Will Terrill (drums) AndraeMurchison (trombone, trumpet), Cleave Guyton Jr. (alto sax, flute, clarinet), LanceBryant (tenor sax) and Marshall McDonald (baritone sax). KF

SONNY FORTUNEBIRDLAND / JUNE 16-20Although often associated with a sound and aesthetic reminiscent of John Coltrane andnoted for his fusion work with Miles Davis, saxophonist Sonny Fortune is a diverseplayer capable of ruminative tunefulness, sly humor and tremendous versatility acrossnumerous styles. Over the past two decades, Fortune finally began to earn the acco-lades his talent warrants, through a series of critically acclaimed post-bop leaningalbums. Parallel to his ever-growing solo work, Fortune is a longstanding participant inthe 4 Generations of Miles project, collaborating with artists who worked with the leg-endary trumpet player in different eras of his career. At Birdland, Fortune joins gui-tarist Mike Stern, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Jimmy Cobb in sets that offeruniquely personal spins on the trumpeter's creative output. SH

RICHARD GALLIANODIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / JUNE 26-28Most assuredly the premier accordion player in contemporary music, FrenchmanRichard Galliano has forged a career others dream about. With a passion for improvis-ing on romantic themes in classical music and world jazz, Galliano truly has done it all.Working with Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Ron Carter and Gary Burton honed hisjazz sensibilities, but he's still attuned to the nueva tangos of mentor Astor Piazzollaand Brazilian music of the authentic masters. You may hear compositions byThelonious Monk, his original inspiration Clifford Brown, or a mix of choppy, staccatothemes with the troubadour soul of a seasoned poet deeply in love. Galliano performsselect works from his recent Resonance CD Sentimentale with his quintet: guitarist VicJuris, pianist John Nelson, bassist George Mraz and drummer Mauricio Zottarelli. MGN

PETE RODRIGUEZMINTON'S / JUNE 17Coming from deep bloodlines in Afro-Cuban music, classically trained and with a stel-lar academic background, vocalist and trumpeter Dr. Pete Rodriguez performs in a CDrelease party for El Conde Negro, on the appropriately titled Destiny label. The son ofPete "El Conde" Rodriguez, he was his dad's music director at age 19 and has accom-panied all the greats including Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri and his godfa-ther, Johnny Pacheco. He has a brash, forceful bravado on his horn, but also a refined, literate approach that suggests he listened to plenty of early Miles Davis or Latin leg-end Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros. He teams up with Luis Perdomo on piano andFender Rhodes, bassist Ricky Rodriguez, drummer Rudy Royston and percussionistRobert Quintero. MGN

Musician-Educator's CornerOne would be hard-pressed to find a

more versatile pianist than Stanley Cowell. An artist whose work has graced therecordings of Marion Brown, The HeathBrothers, Max Roach, Bobby Hutchersonand others, Cowell has also demonstratedhis own remarkable touch as a bandleader, capable of bridging diverse worlds fromstride to free jazz. Slowing down his tour-ing in the early 1980s to begin a distin-guished teaching career, first at LehmanCollege and later at Rutgers University,Cowell has retired from teaching andresumed a more active performing life, drawing upon the lessons, and sometimeseven former students, from his universityyears on several inspired albums.

Hailing from Toledo OH, Cowell recallsa formative experience of hearing ArtTatum. "He performed at my house when Iwas six years old," Cowell recalls. "Thatexperience stamped me subconsciouslywith an image of the crystallization of jazzpiano! From that point on, it was about dis-covery." This initial introduction to themaster of stride piano certainly imprintedon Cowell, whose own left-hand work onthe keyboard strongly echoes the pre-boppiano masters and has helped to shape hisdistinctive sound.

Also classically trained, Cowell contin-ued his music studies at Oberlin College, during which time he worked withRahsaan Roland Kirk, before finally set-tling in New York. There, he developedremarkable connections and collabora-tions. "When I moved to New York in 1966,I was invited to a rehearsal at MaxRoach's," Cowell explains. "That was alsowhen I first met Charles Tolliver."Working with Max Roach, he found adrummer who imparted strong musicaland entrepreneurial advice and whose owncontinued artistic development providedCowell with inspiration.

Along with Tolliver, Cowell appliedsome of Roach's business teachings to co-found Strata-East Records, an independentartist-run label. "Max was always encour-aging us to be creative and entrepreneurialand also to control our intellectual proper-ty," he recalls. "That time was an impor-tant learning experience."

Indeed, the 1970s proved a remarkableperiod for Cowell, during which he deliv-ered some of his most memorable andbeloved performances across an astoundingrange of musical styles. However, in 1981,

he decided to wind down touring, ultimate-ly leaving his tenure with The HeathBrothers in favor of a teaching position.Accepting a role at Lehman College, Cowelltaught there until 2000, when he accepteda tenured position at Rutgers University, which he held until his retirement in 2013.

His years of working in a wide range ofstyles and with remarkable mentors likeRoach ensured Cowell's ability to provide aparticularly broad teaching approach forhis students. While handling keyboard andimprovisation classes, Cowell was also ableto draw on his own business work and holdbusiness seminars. "I was able to teachimprovisation classes to both undergradu-ate and graduate students," Cowell notes."And especially with the grad students, Icould hold sessions on contract reading andI was always encouraging students to cre-ate new venues and performing situations.Jazz musicians should look outside of theclub mentality and connect with othertypes of ensembles. I think a lot of newyoung musicians are advancing the causewith this."

A few years before his retirement fromRutgers, Cowell began to emerge on therecording scene, releasing severalacclaimed CDs on Steeplechase Records. They both demonstrate that his trademarkversatility has lost none of its vigor and hisplaying remains as fresh and vibrant asever. The decades of teaching also seem tohave brought fresh perspectives to hisplaying, new and remarkable composi-tions, as well as new collaborators: on2012's It's Time, Cowell is joined by twoformer students, Tom Dicarlo and ChrisBrown.

Cowell continues to assert and refine hissolo career, most recently with two newalbums. Are You Real finds him in a triosetting with Ray Anderson and BillyDrummond and Juneteenth offers a solopiano performance of a large-scale work

Fred Lyman, the retired maker of string basses who now lives in Florida, went to NewOrleans in 1952 and looked up Brew Moore, who was working in a Bourbon Street strip club.Fred was carrying a guitar, and Brew suggested they play together. Fred expected he wouldplay his tenor. But, hanging on a nail on the wall was a souvenir quality six-hole bambooflute. Brew took it down and shook some cockroaches out of it, positioned his fingers, andlooked at Fred to indicate that he was ready. When Fred asked what key he wanted to playin, he saw that Brew was offended at the implication that he couldn't play in every key. Theybegan a medium tempo blues, and Brew played complex variations, scales, arpeggios, in analmost classical tone, perfectly in tune. Fred couldn't believe all this was coming from thatpiece of bamboo. He expressed his amazement, and Brew replied, 'That's what you get fordenigrating my virtuosity!'"

Bluegrass guitarist Tim O'Brien told Herb Gardner that the best pickup to put on a banjois a Ford F-150.

NEVILLE DICKIEBICKFORD THEATRE / JUNE 1It starts with a rumble of his left hand, and before you know it, pianist Neville Dickiehas you right in the middle of his world of stride and ragtime, founded by Fats Waller,Willie "The Lion" Smith and James P. Johnson, all of whom caught Dickie's ear as ateenager in England. Dickie has devoted his life to this style. With a left hand thatwill take your breath away, this boogie woogie master can make any piano shout. AsTony Betts of The Jazz Rag writes, "to see this man sit down and channel James P.Johnson's 'Harlem Strut' is quite the experience." Featured on hundreds of record-ings, Dickie strides into the Bickford with Joe Midiri on saxophones and clarinet andbrother Paul on drums, trombone and vibes.

LUIS PERDOMO HOTOKE / JUNE 18Pianist Luis Perdomo's childhood home in Caracas Venezuela was filled with music.Alongside salsa, Latin, R&B and classical, Perdomo heard jazz greats Bud Powell andOscar Peterson, two of his most important musical influences. Perdomo came to NewYork and studied with Harold Danko and Sir Roland Hanna, leading to performanc-es and recordings with Ray Barretto, Ravi Coltrane, Brian Lynch and Miguel Zenón.With numerous albums as leader, Perdomo's just out Twenty-Two (Hot Tone Music)features bassist Mimi Jones and drummer Rudy Royston in a collection of challeng-ing, complex rhythms the pianist says, “were inspired by Miguel Zenón, wherepatience and trust allowed me to take once off-limit musical devices and make themsecond nature.” In New Brunswick, Perdomo and bandmates focus on the latestrelease and some surprises for all.

MICHAEL HASHIMMAYO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER / JUNE 14Michael Hashim took an elementary school fascination with the saxophone and devel-oped it into a musical life that has taken this alto master around the world. Inspiredby Cannonball Adderley, Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges, Hashim has numerousalbums as leader. Lotus Blossom (Stash), a 1990 small group recording paying trib-ute to Billy Strayhorn, and Multicolor Blue (Hep), a quintet Strayhorn salute, wouldlead to the 15-piece Billy Strayhorn Orchestra. Hashim says, "our repertoire includesworks Strayhorn wrote specifically for the Ellington Orchestra, including 'ChelseaBridge' and 'Raincheck,' new versions of tunes, like 'Take the A Train,' alongsiderarely heard works like 'Swing Dance' and 'Cashmere Cutie.' Strayhorn's collabora-tion with Ellington, like his friendship, was very close, something you'll feel first handwith Hashim and bandmates.

FALKNER EVANSMCCARTER THEATRE / JUNE 7Pianist Falkner Evans credits his interest in jazz to what he says is "the freedom ofexpression allowed." After early years in Tulsa OK following the Beatles, Bob Dylan andThe Band, Evans was drawn to jazz through John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy and MilesDavis. Evans' first recording, Level Playing Field (Metropolitan) was a trio effort thatimmediately established him on the New York jazz scene. With Point of the Moon (CAP)Evans expanded to a quintet, showing his skill to develop a single-line idea into a para-graph-long sentence. Original music from this recording and his follow-up, Arc (CAP)are given fresh invention when Evans is joined by saxophonist Marc Mommaas, trum-peter Kirk Knuffke, bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Matt Wilson.

Roy Nathanson has a varied career asa saxophonist, composer, band-leader,actor and teacher. He is leader and princi-pal composer of the Jazz Passengers, which he co-founded with Curtis Fowlkesin 1987. He has scored works for PBS andHBO, films by Jacob Burkhardt andTamara Jenkins, and numerous theaterproductions. His sideman credits includefour years recording and touring with TheLounge Lizards, work with Marc Ribot'sRootless Cosmopolitans, Charles Earlandand The Shirelles.

He performs at The Stone for a week-long residency June 2-7.

Q. Anything you'd rather be doingthan playing music?

A. "No" is the short answer. I love writ-ing, teaching, friends, my family, Difaro'spizza, and reading on my porch deck butwhen I'm playing and it's right...

Q. One gig or recording of yours youcan't shake?

A. I'm fickle and kind of speedy so it'salways the last one that worked I can'tshake. I was just in Germany with SottoVoce at NDR and we hadn't played in awhile and it was magical. Then a few dayslater my high school kids came from NewYork and we all played with 60 people onstage and it's all still in my head...

Q. One gig or recording of a contempo-rary?

A. I love Ribot's first solo CD Don'tBlame Me and Threadgill's Spirit of NuffNuff but there are a lot more.

Q. Favorite place in the world to play, public or private?

A. Banlieues Bleus jazz festival inParis. It's an amazing festival and organi-zation run by Xavier Lemettre.

Q. Is a Jazz Passenger different than aJazz Messenger?

A. Ha! A Jazz Passenger is just movingalong with the world trying to deal with asmuch grace and humor as possible giventhe circumstances. I'm no kind ofMessenger, but the assumption is thatsuch a person leads with a torch!

Q. What have you learned from being aJazz Passenger?

A. I've learned that musical language isa shared thing built by a kind of familyand, like all languages, it evolves overtime. Our band has been together nearly30 years now and, although we don't playoften enough together, an effortless com-munication and sound exists and flourish-es. And I've learned that Mingus, Monkand all these brilliant jazz players of the20th century have built a world that is asingular pleasure to explore.

Q. We're entering into a political sea-son. Is jazz by its nature a political state-ment?

A. I always thought so but since I've metyoung people who play totally free andhave reactionary Ayn Rand-ish politics, Ican't say it is. I think it's a culture and, like all cultures, deals with the push andpull of the individual and community. Inthe 60s and 70s when the avant gardeexisted in the framework of political resist-ance it was by nature political but as jazzhas become part of academia and moreinstitutionalized, that definition haschanged.

Q. If you were starting out now wouldyou change anything?

A. I dropped out of Columbia to practiceand went to San Francisco and joined a cir-cus. Times are so different now and the

world of musical ideas is centered aroundschool. I would just go to New EnglandConservatory of Music or one of severalreally creative academic programs now.

Q. If you didn't live in NYC wherewould you live?

A. Paris. I have great relationshipsthere and they really appreciate my music.

Q. How have your recorded music lis-tening habits changed given all the currentoptions?

A. Yeah, unfortunately. I just don't havetime to keep my record collection togetherso I listen on my iPhone. I've put a lot ofmy CDs on my computer and bought/down-loaded some CDs, plus I'm totally againstit but my family got Spotify so I protestedbut started using it; but it's like listeningmyself out of a job so I've cut it out.

Q. What do you struggle with in yourcreative life?

A. Since I started running the musicdepartment at ICE, an alternative NYCpublic school, I just don't have a lot of extratime. I play with the kids and dotext/music stuff professionally with them(see subwaymoon.com) but it isn't the longunstructured days that I used to have andthat makes things harder.

Q. Do you work on music every day? A. Yeah I practice every day, play with

the kids at school and do as much writingas I can.

Q. You'll be playing duos, among otherthings, at The Stone. Who, alive or not, would be your dream duo partner?

A. Monk for sure. And Dolphy, HarryPartch, Billy Holiday.

Q. If there's an afterlife, one piece ofmusic you heard here that you'll rememberthere?

A. Out to Lunch or Monk and Traneplaying "In a Sentimental Mood."

Q. What's the last truly great piece ofmusic you listened to live or recorded?

A. Julius Eastman's Stay On It (1971)from the collected works of Julius Eastmanreleased by New World Records. The CDwas released a few years ago and AnthonyColeman loaned to me. Julius was a geniusblack classical composer, improviser andmusician who lived in the Lower East Sidein the 80s.

Q. What are a few pieces of music thatmade you the person or musician you aretoday?

A. Out to Lunch, My Favorite Things, the Cage prepared piano pieces, anythingSonny Criss played, Dylan's "Just LikeTom Thumb's Blues" sung by NinaSimone.

Q. You're having a dinner party and caninvite three musicians. Who would theybe?

A. Eric Dolphy, Duke Ellington andBertold Brecht. Seems like that would be aconversation...
