WINNING SPINSTHE BIG APPLE CONTINUES AS A

hub for big bands, notwithstanding theclose of the Big Band Era generations agoand the demise of Manhattan's famousballrooms by the turn of the 20th century. The tradition remains strong, currentlymanifested in the weekly gig of a host ofbig bands taking their cue from the nowhalf-century long (Village) Vanguard JazzOrchestra. The VJO pioneered a modern,Big Apple big band style inspiring manygroups that followed. One of them is trom-bonist John Fedchock's quarter-century-old New York Big Band. Rejuvenating anolder, more swing and mid-20th centurystyle (e.g. Count Basie, Buddy Rich, WoodyHerman, Duke Ellington) is a more recententry in the local big band roster, alto sax-ophonist Eyal Vilner's Big Band. Their lat-est albums comprise this Winning Spins.

Like It Is, John Fedchock New YorkBig Band (MAMA Records), is splitbetween Fedchock originals and jazz andpop standards, at five each. But Fedchock'stake on standards isn't exactly standard."You and the Night and the Music," at afast clip, is presented in an intricate, trickyrun through contrasting, overlapping pas-sages, just glancing at the familiar theme. Then, after a round of riff and shout sup-ported solos, the melody returns punctuat-ed by drum breaks.

There's whimsy in his chart ofEllington's "Just Squeeze Me," ScottRobinson's baritone sax stating the theme, interspersed with frenetic bursts from theensemble. Of the other standards, "NeverLet Me Go" is the leader's ballad feature, his satiny trombone lines supported by bil-lowing clouds from the group; "ForHeaven's Sake" is a ballad feature forBarry Ries' flugelhorn.

Afro-Latin percussionist BobbySanabria appears on three tracks, includ-ing a tropically brisk take on CedarWalton's "Ojos de Rojo" with pianist AllenFarnham doing his best Eddie Palmieriimpression. Sanabria also adds the "funkycha-cha" element to Fedchock's boogaloo"Like It Is," and beguiling bolero beats to"Havana," the Cuban feel enhanced byMark Vinci's flute.

Other originals include an impression-istic "Hair of the Dog," ranging fromdreamy to perky; a Wayne Shorterinspired "Just Sayin'" with notable solosfrom the leader and soprano saxophonistCharles Pillow and, climactically, "TenThirty 30," written for a Clifford Brownsymposium (Brown's birthday is 10/30/30)and consisting of thematic material from

Brown's music. It's a challenging piecewith tempo shifts and engaging solos fromtrumpeter Scott Wendholt, the leader, andtenor saxophonist Rich Perry.

Almost Sunrise, Eyal Vilner Big Band(Gut String Records), differs fromFedchock's in both big band approach andemphasis. While Vilner arranged all 13tracks, only two of them are his originals.Six have vocals, for Vilner's vision of a bigband includes the traditional vocalists, inthis case three. Charanee Wade, provingshe's equally adept at singing swing stan-dards as she is at doing Gil Scott Heron(her most recent album), is on all six songs, joined by Charles Turner on three ofthem, two also including NadiaWashington. Instrumental tracks oftenhave a strong swing feel, drawing from thestrategies of the New Testament CountBasie Orchestra.

There's a definite Basie influence on theopener, "The Rabbit," although the titlewas Ellington saxophonist Johnny Hodges'nickname. Soloists (Vilner on alto sax,Matt Jodrell, trumpet and Tadataka Unno, piano) trade with shouts and riffs, thebrass here as well as elsewhere employingsuch Swing Era devices as squeezed andpinched tones, mutes and plungers. TwoJimmy Owens' blues-related tunes furtherthe Basie feel, as well as an instrumental"Centerpiece" featuring the trombone sec-tion and bassist Jennifer Vincent soloing. That Harry "Sweets" Edison tune is alsodelivered with Jon Hendricks' lyrics as avocal trio version reminiscent of Lambert,Hendricks and Ross.

The vocal trio also delightfully essaysNat Cole's jump-swing classic, "StraightenUp and Fly Right." The Ellington influenceis strong as well, both in Duke's "It Don'tMean a Thing" and Billy Strayhorn's"Lush Life," contrasting vocals for Wade, who nails the latter as few do. Vilner's titlecomposition is also very Dukish, a tonepoem beginning with just piano and bassclarinet by Lucas Pino, who also has somememorable tenor sax moments on the CD,adding flute, clarinet and rhythm to themix along the way to a penultimate tenorsax solo by Asaf Yuria. As a full program ofa reimagined classic big band, with all thevariety of the originals, this is a whollysuccessful album.

John Fedchock New York Big Bandunveils music from the new CD at theBlue Note, Aug. 10. Eyal Vilner BigBand has a CD release event atDizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Aug. 31.

SCHOLAR, MUSICIAN, EDUCATOR,composer—pianist Geri Allen is one of

the more multi-faceted jazz musicians ofour day, and one of the most deservedlycelebrated. She was the recipient of aGuggenheim Fellowship in 2008 and wasthe first woman to win the Danish JazzPar Prize and the Soul Train Lady of Soulaward for jazz. Last year, Allen was pre-sented with an Honorary Doctorate byBerklee College of Music and she receivedthe Congressional Black CaucusFoundation Jazz Legacy Award.

A native of Detroit, she earned herundergraduate degree at HowardUniversity in Washington DC, where shelater taught; she then went on to obtain aMaster's in ethnomusicology fromUniversity of Pittsburgh, where she is nowits Director of Jazz Studies.

Thoughtful, modest and soft-spoken,she is known for her challenging, free flow-ing compositions and her technical virtuos-ity. However, she also looks back to herpredecessors, often delving deeply intotheir styles. She is musical director of theMary Lou Williams Collective, recordingand performing the music of the trailblaz-ing pianist and composer, including a col-laboration with S. Epatha Merkerson andFarah Jasmin Griffin.

She's now taking on the music of ErrollGarner, a Pittsburgh native whose collec-tions recently arrived at her university."The archives are an amazing opportunityfor scholars of jazz. They contain a lot ofthe nuances needed to understand whatwas going on at the time, including thesocial structure," she says. "Garner wastouring the world and doing film and tele-vision and he had access to the main-stream that many artists of his generationdidn't have."

She is assembling a tribute to his semi-

nal recording, Concert by the Sea whichwas surreptitiously taped at a live per-formance 60 years ago in the MontereyBay area and became a best-selling album. The project will debut at the MontereyJazz Festival in September where she'll bejoined by pianists Jason Moran and new-comer Christian Sands (on three pianos!)as well as guitarist Russell Malone anddrummer Jimmy Cobb.

"It brings a great deal of clarity for meas a composer and pianist to look deeply atthese great icons and innovators," she saysof her study of Garner, Williams and oth-ers. "I go back and hear things I neverheard before and it gives me more clarityeach time I revisit them by listening to orperforming their music. I also feel that wayabout Monk and other people who were mygreat inspirations on piano."

Now it's her turn to inspire youngerpianists and other musicians. Last month, she held a Jazz Camp for Girls at NJPACwith several women clinicians as well ascolleagues like bassist Kenny Davis andCobb, both of whom will join her thismonth at her annual week at the leg-endary Village Vanguard.

"Mr. Cobb is fantastic in so many ways, just a great spirit, and it's great to playwith an icon," she says. "And the intensityand beauty of the Vanguard are always abig part of the performance. In this musi-cal journey—the places along the way andthe artists that you've played with—thereare markers along the way and theVanguard is one of those special markers."

At the girls' camp, they paid tribute toone of her "special markers," Allen's men-tor Marcus Belgrave, who died this year,as did another of her gurus and collabora-tors, Ornette Coleman. Her teacher fromthe University of Pittsburg, Nathan Davis, retired two years ago and she took hisplace as the head of the jazz department. She is maintaining his legacy of teachingwhile continuing to perform and record. Both are equally important to her, she says.

"Education has been a huge part of myfamily's trajectory and I have found thatworking with students has incredibleweight for me and connects me to a legacyin terms of how people shared music withme when I was young and patientlyworked through with me my early chal-lenges as a player," she says. "Watchingyoung musicians evolve and go off to suc-cessful careers—it's great to be a part ofthat process. I see myself in these students,in a way, remembering what it was likemaking the decision to move to New YorkCity and figuring out how to break in—there are so many possibilities for them!"

The Geri Allen Trio with bassistKenny Davis and drummer JimmyCobb are at the Village Vanguard Aug.18-23.

DHEEPA CHARIROCKWOOD MUSIC HALL / AUGUST 6If there's a rivalry to take over for Sarah Vaughan these days in terms of a pure voice,Dheepa Chari would be a contender. Dovetailing on her grandmother's professionalHindustani singing in India, she studied music of her heritage and Western songs, moving as a youth to Vancouver, then Dallas where she graduated from SouthernMethodist University in 1999 before migrating to NYC in 2001. The evidence is heardon her previous recordings 4th Street and Some New Fashion and her newly releasedbreakthrough CD, Patchwork. Combining standards with original arrangements, spir-it songs, deeply emotional forays and an easily relatable pop sensibility, Chari's love-ly voice is alluring and sweet without being syrupy. Chari is joined by keyboardistLars Potteiger and bassist Dan Asher for this performance. MGN

GRÉGOIRE MARETLITCHFIELD JAZZ FESTIVAL / AUGUST 8Swiss-born Grégoire Maret is a key player within the tiny fraternity of harmonica per-formers in jazz. With his versatility, innovations and impressionistic sound, he maysucceed Toots Thielemans as dean of the instrument. Maret's genre-jumping talenthas brought steady work in the folk, pop and world music fields, though jazz is hishome base and where his musical heart resides. A 2007 duo with pianist Andy Milneand Maret's eponymous CD debut as a leader in 2012, are soon to be followed byWanted, a project whose participants include Terri Lyne Carrington, Ivan Lins, ChrisPotter, Dianne Reeves, Luciana Souza and the late Jimmy Scott. For his secondappearance at Litchfield, Maret’s quartet showcases the talents of James Francies, piano; Burniss Earl Travis, bass and John Davis, drums. KF

E.J. STRICKLANDJAZZ STANDARD / AUGUST 9One of the most prolific young (mid-30s) drummers on today's jazz scene, E.J.Strickland has played on more than 30 albums in the new millennium while holdingdown gigs with Ravi Coltrane, Cassandra Wilson, and his identical twin Marcus, asaxophonist, as well as leading his own bands. His quintet's latest album, TheUndying Spirit (SMK), underscores his emphasis on ensemble shape and delivery andshowcases his ability to create surprisingly off-kilter, original time feels while main-taining, yet improvising, around the beat. Although that band featured two saxo-phonists and an acoustic rhythm section, he brings his new Transient Beings group tothis gig, featuring David Gilmore and Tom Guarna on electric guitars, John Benitez, electric bass, and guests Alicia Olatuja, vocals and Grégoire Maret, harmonica. GABRIEL ALEGRIA AFRO-PERUVIAN SEXTETZINC BAR / AUGUST 14 AND 21Bandleader/trumpeter Gabriel Alegria's crisp tone and light touch perfectly contrastthe firm percussive feel that epitomizes Latin jazz. Alegria's forward-thinkingapproach has brought his sextet acclaim from both critics and his contemporaries. With luminaries such as Ingrid Jensen, Ron Carter and Christian McBride singing hispraises, Alegria is poised to be the new poster boy for Afro-Peruvian jazz. Alegria hasmuch to celebrate as his sextet's latest release, 10, is due to out on Aug. 7 on ZOHOMusic with the title referring to the group's 10th anniversary. The sextet's perform-ances at the Zinc Bar are part of a bi-weekly residency from August through Decemberwith Alegria and company not only carrying the torch for Afro-Peruvian jazz but re-igniting Latin jazz for present and future jazz connoisseurs. VICTOR GOULDJAZZ GALLERY / AUGUST 15Since arriving in New York, LA native Victor Gould already has become a compellingpiano force on the scene, performing a range of musical expressions from sophisticat-ed voicings over deep grooves to soulful lines over standard arrangements. Recipientof the 2009 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award and the first student to receive ThePresidential Scholarship at Berklee, he went on to earn his Master's degree from theThelonious Monk Institute and currently tours as a member of the Wallace RoneyQuintet. His rhythmic sensitivity and depth of harmony have resonated with jazzmasters including Donald Harrison, Buster Williams, Esperanza Spalding, NicolasPayton, Lenny White and Terence Blanchard. Gould brings his current trio featuringBen Williams, bass and Obed Calvaire, drums. SJ

L I G H TMARCUS GOLDHABERBAR THALIA / AUGUST 16, 23 AND 30Vocalist and songwriter Marcus Goldhaber has been earning accolades not only for hislight, swinging interpretations of standard fare, but also for his erudite songwritingchops. A prolific composer, Goldhaber enjoys a particular knack for clever turns ofphrase and catchy melodies, and often occupies a middle ground between jazz andBroadway. Throughout August, Goldhaber will conclude a residency he's held atSymphony Space's Bar Thalia, in which he performs in a duo setting with a rotatingcast of top-flight guitarists. Having already showcased a stellar line-up of talents, theseries will continue to offer some impressive guests, as guitarists Pete McCann, SeanHarkness and Ron Jackson each joins Goldhaber on a night, as will special guest vocal-ists Vanessa Trouble, Dawn Derow and Kendra Shank. SH

LINDA OHSIDE DOOR / AUGUST 28Some jazz bassists make an indelible first impression—Wilbur Ware's triple stop vir-tuosity with Thelonious Monk was unforgettable and Charles Mingus was such a dom-inating force of nature, as both a personality and a bassist, it would be hard to forgetfirst encountering him with his quintet at the Half Note. Linda Oh made a similarimpression with the Dave Douglas Quintet on their 50/50 tour (gigs in 50 states duringDouglas' 50th year). She was so assured, with her warm, plummy tone and perfectlyarticulated, reverberating notes anchoring that most formidable ensemble. Oh, fromAustralia by way of Malaysia, has been working recently with Kenny Barron's quartet, but she brings her own quartet here, with Ben Wendel, reeds, James Muller, guitar andTed Poor, drums. GK

ROGER KELLAWAYJAZZ AT KITANO / AUGUST 21-22 Roger Kellaway's jazz career began in the early 1960s, but the pianist remains an artistdeserving of greater recognition due to his eclectic musical interests. For a quarter cen-tury, Kellaway wrote film scores and classical music, along with recording numerousstudio dates of all kinds. But he has long had the respect of his jazz peers. OscarPeterson told Gene Lees, "I love Roger Kellaway. He knows the tradition and he is notafraid." Now more focused on jazz, he has wowed fans with his wide stylistic range andopen-minded approach to improvising. Kellaway's recent recordings include three CDswith Eddie Daniels and several small group dates, one a tribute to Bobby Darin, whomhe accompanied in the late 1960s. Bassist Jay Leonhart and guitarist Joe Cohn joinKellaway. KD

ELI FOUNTAINMARCUS GARVEY PARK / AUGUST 28Multi-percussionist Eli Fountain has flown under the radar for far too long, but thisperformance in tribute to Max Roach and celebrating the 50th anniversary ofJazzmobile, should elevate his status. The native Detroiter is the son of Motown recordssaxophonist Eli Fountain Sr. He attended the revered Cass Technical High School andthe Cincinnati Conservatory in formal studies. He has worked prominently with GeriAllen and James Carter as a sideman. This ensemble—Percussion Discussion—isreleasing a CD, Masterpiece, inspired by Roach. Fountain is joined by a mighty group, some sharing instruments during the show: a vibraphone front line of Jay Hoggard andBryan Carrott, NYC legends Warren Smith and Bobby Sanabria, drummer ReggieNicholson, pan steel drummer Lyndon Achee and saxophonist Patience Higgins. MGN

CAMILLE THURMANMARCUS GARVEY PARK / AUGUST 22Multi-instrumentalist Camille Thurman proves that musical intuition can be translat-ed for any instrument. Whether singing, playing the saxophone or flute, Thurmanbrings her own distinct voice into a new realm of melodic opportunity for modern jazz.Such sentiments are mirrored in reviews of her latest release, 2014's Origins. RichardKamins of the blog Step Tempest calls the album "our introduction to a musician/per-son who is spirited, formidable and dedicated to the myriad possibilities that modernmusic presents." After winning the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers awardin 2012 and 2013, Thurman is poised to influence modern jazz composition with her well-defined sonority, tight arrangements and harmonic maturity. Thurman's performance ispart of the Charlie Parker Festival, a celebration of the legendary saxophonist. EW

25Allison photo by Cees van de Ven.

THIS MONTH, THE MASTER BAS-sist and composer Ben Allison will cel-

ebrate the 30th anniversary of his arrivalin New York City with a multi-night run atBirdland. As he prepares for the gig,Allison will do something that has been arunning theme in his storied career: he'sgoing to try something new.

"About ten years ago, I stopped usingpiano in my band and started using guitarinstead," Allison explains, a nod to his cur-rent ensemble's line-up of guitarist SteveCardenas, drummer Rudy Royston andtrumpeter Jeremy Pelt. "Previous incarna-tions of my band had Frank Kimbrough onpiano, and this gig brings Frank back. It'sthe first time I've done a line-up like thiswith piano and guitar and I'm quite excit-ed to see what we do."

To be sure, the spirit of adventure andrisk-taking is a hallmark of Allison'smusic. In the three decades since hisarrival in New York, Allison has estab-lished himself as a superlative bassist, anextraordinary composer, an innovativethinker in the music industry and a tire-less advocate for creative musicians.Continually reimagining his older projectswhile also tackling new and excitingmusic, Allison has amassed an impressivediscography of highly acclaimed albums, most closely associated with PalmettoRecords. However on his latest, 2013's TheStars Look Very Different Today, Allisontook an additional risk, breaking his stringof recordings with Palmetto and self-releasing on his own imprint, SonicCamera Records.

"Musicians who are mid-career, like me,end up taking stock and see what's work-ing, what's not, and where we'd like to go,"Allison explains. "I don't make decisionslightly, so I thought long and hard anddecided to try releasing my own music. Ihave always been a DIY person and, on myearlier albums, was very involved in theproduction, mixing, mastering and mar-keting of the projects. I got to learn somuch with each release. So I was excitedwhen I released my own album because Igot the chance to put into practice every-thing I had absorbed in the past 15 years."Indeed, the risk paid off as the CDreturned a profit, enjoyed widespread crit-ical accolades and received extensive, enthusiastic radio support.

"It was difficult, but I'm in the black, which for a record label is often not thecase," he notes. "We made it into the topfive on the radio, which isn't bad consider-ing that it was me and an intern doing theradio promotion!"

The self-driven record release and itssuccess also resonate strongly with an ear-lier venture of Allison's: The JazzComposers Collective. Established in 1992as a collaborative project between Allison,Michael Blake, Ron Horton, Kimbroughand Ted Nash, the Collective ran for 13seasons, premiered over 300 new works, took up residencies throughout the worldand brought more than 250 musicians onas collaborating artists. Enabling Allisonto create new music on his own terms, thecollective proved a crucial and formativeexperience. "It really helped me to find mystyle as a bandleader as well as my per-sonal voice as a composer," he remembers."And ultimately that's the goal: to findyour voice and to be yourself."

This DIY road may have been challeng-ing, but its reward has been tremendousfor Allison and has helped to define hiscareer. With 11 albums to his name, not tomention a massive array of composer cred-its, Allison has ensured his ability to createmusic he loves on his terms: "The musi-cians on my records are my friends. We putthis music together ourselves and when weshow up in, say, Canton IL and half thecrowd knows our tunes and are calling outto request titles, it's gratifying. It's a hard-er road, yes, but the joy is immense."

As he prepares for the Birdland gig andconsiders uniting his recent and older proj-ects through the enhanced ensemble,Allison is excited. "The whole point of whatwe do is to play live," he says. "We loveplaying and I feel more strongly than everhow important it is for all of us to gather ina room to make music and listen to music. That feeling cannot be beat."

Ben Allison performs with JeremyPelt, Steve Cardenas, FrankKimbrough and Rudy Royston atBirdland Aug. 11-15.

ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATEBy Elzy Kolb

Form, function, flexibility

Pianist/singer/composer Deanna Wit-kowski loves arranging, and draws frominfluences and inspirations ranging fromfolk songs to 19th-century hymns to jazzstandards to classical works. "I experimentwith re-harmonizing, changing the rhyth-mic structure of the tunes, just imaginingstuff in different ways."

In 2010, the bicentennial of the birth ofthe composer Frederic Chopin, Witkowskistarted thinking of doing a project thatwould take an improvisational look atsome of his works, with the goal of "goingwith different styles of music and having itfeel like it's all one." The result is herrecently released solo CD, Raindrops:Improvisations with Chopin (Tilapia)."Some of the arrangements came more eas-ily than others; the forms are different."The concept for a well-known pieceWitkowski first studied in sixth grade wasone of the easy ones, while others tookmore trial and error. "I jump in and trythings quickly, then decide what I like andwhat I want to change. There's a lot ofimprovisation on the recording—a ton ofimprovisation.

"It's sad that so many classical musi-cians and other types of musicians are nottaught how to improvise. They're tied tothe page and don't know where to start.Church musicians, for example, have to beable to improvise—there are lots of timeswhen you have to fill space or provide somekind of music—but that's somethingthey're rarely taught." With that in mind, the pianist has started writing a monthlycolumn on improvisation, "Stepping Offthe Page," for the blog PianoAddict.com.Witkowski aims for the column to be acces-sible to a full spectrum of readers, fromnon-players to professional musicians."The idea is, you don't have to be a musi-cian—improvising is like learning a lan-guage. Beginning players can improvise,as well as more advanced players."

During her solo piano midday gig inBryant Park, Aug. 3-7 and an earlyevening appearance at the SignatureTheatre Café on Aug. 7, Witkowski willdelve into compositions from her new CDas well as material she's working on andtunes she rarely gets a chance to play. Onmost solo gigs, Witkowski doesn't preparea detailed set list. But the casual atmos-phere in the park makes her strive formore structure, so she often maps out theentire set. "People come up and talk to mewhile I'm playing and in between tunes. Inthat situation, I can't be thinking aboutwhat's next." That's not to say the song listis set in stone: This is her 11th year ofplaying the Piano in Bryant series andWitkowski remembers occasions like theafternoon it started to sprinkle and sheswitched her focus to songs to suit theweather, such as "Here's that Rainy Day."Material from Raindrops would be a natu-ral under the circumstances!

Best of both worlds

Singer/guitarist Diane Hubka hasbeen based in Los Angeles for the pastdecade, but there are still certain thingsshe misses about New York, her home for20 years pre-California. "It's a very stimu-lating city; I was very productive when Ilived there. The pace of the city is so inspir-ing. And it was great to meet and studywith people who were so influential to me,"including Howard Alden, Anne MarieMoss, Harold Danko, Sheila Jordan, MarkMurphy, Connie Crothers and JayClayton.

The quantity, quality and accessibilityof the music here is another plus. "The jazzscene is so great in New York; it's so nice tobe able to go to more than one thing in onenight." Hubka discussed strategies forsqueezing in several sets, such as startingout at the 55 Bar ("That's always interest-ing, great music."), then going around thecorner to the Village Vanguard ("The histo-

continued from page 27ry of that place, and the quality of thebands."), before checking out another clubor two within walking distance.

Hubka also has fond memories of Jazzat Kitano and enjoyed hearing friends andcolleagues play at the original upstairsvenue. She's looking forward to checkingout the newer, larger space when shemakes her Jazz at Kitano debut Aug. 13with pianist Mark Soskin, bassist DeanJohnson and drummer Tim Horner. Inaddition to material from her recentrecording, West Coast Strings (SSJ),expect to hear "not so standard standards,"Hubka says.

"There are so many great songs no onedoes. I enjoy lesser-known songs, thingswritten by members of the band and peopleI know." And she'll add some familiarfavorites to the mix. "It can be too muchwork for non-musicians to go through anight of tunes they haven't heard before.People often request things like 'MoonRiver,' songs they know and love."

Though she praises the Big Apple,Hubka is more than content living in LA.She cites performing opportunities such asa recent series of outdoor concerts singinga Sinatra medley with an 80-piece sym-phonic wind band. She also gives highmarks to California's rich guitar scene, asevidenced by West Coast Strings, featuringcontributions from eight other guitarists, including Mimi Fox, John Pisano andAnthony Wilson.

Hubka hopes to resume formal musicstudy soon. "I haven't had private lessonsin a while, but it's something I want to domy whole life. Whatever I study on aninstrument helps my singing, it all goesinto the same ear-training bank," sheexplains. "I strive to be like the ShirleyHorn of guitar. She was such a fantasticpiano player. She would use such gorgeous, lush voicings behind her singing and swingthe hell out of everything. That's some-thing to work toward."

And a final West Coast plus: "I thinkI'm going to live longer from living here;New York is very stressful: stimulating, but stressful. And it's lovely to have sunny, warm weather all the time."

From the Big Scrapple to the Big Apple

Bronx-born, East Harlem-reared MikeBoone almost didn't follow the jazz path."I was a classical guy while I was growingup," he explains. "I thought I'd be the firstblack bassist in the New YorkPhilharmonic." He began listening to jazzwhile in high school and his interest in thegenre increased, even as he continued clas-sical studies at Eastman School of Music."That was in the mid-'70s and I loved theexcitement, the fusion, the energy that jazzhad at that time."

Instead of going the classical route aftergraduation, Boone added electric bass tohis instrumental arsenal and went on theroad in the show bands of entertainers likeBen Vereen and Leslie Uggams and jazzgreats like Buddy Rich. He eventually set-tled in Philadelphia, which has been hishome since the mid-'80s.

"Being in Philly allowed me to play witha lot of people coming through and to findmy way in this music," he says. Besidesworking regularly with renownedPhiladelphians such as Trudy Pitts, JoeyDeFrancesco, Orrin Evans and ShirleyScott, Boone has played with Clark Terry,Donald Byrd, Mose Allison and JoeHenderson. "I'll never forget that experi-ence; I was such a big Henderson fan. Hewas inside and outside at the same time. Inever encountered a horn player with sucha great sense of time," Boone recalls.

Besides gigging steadily, Boone is anadjunct music professor at TempleUniversity and a regular at jams. "Thescene is very vibrant in Philadelphia, witha nice cross section of people playing." Hisregular quartet includes John Swana ontrombone and EVI (electronic valve instru-ment), Tim Brey on piano and AnwarMarshall on drums. "There's an interestingage gap there," Boone points out. "Johnand I are in our 50s and Tim and Anwarare in their 20s. I want to play relevantand they help me to do that. I found myway in Philly; now I'm working withyounger guys and they're finding theirway. It feels good to be part of the continuum."

The bassist and his band have a lot tocelebrate when they hit Smalls Aug. 21-22. In addition to a belated birthday(Boone was born Aug. 8), they'll focus onmaterial from his recent CD, Heart andSoul, including compositions byHenderson, Cedar Walton and originals, plus some new arrangements. Boone seesthe band as a collaborative effort."Everyone injects his own personality. Asleader, I decide when the tune starts andstops and the middle takes care of itself."

Boone is looking forward to his BigApple gig and hopes to get here more often."I took the long way around to playing inNew York and it feels like quite an accom-plishment to bring my own group intoSmalls."

Dancer/Jazz Ambassador/Writer’s corner

Although often under-recognized for thedepth and import of her contributions,Norma Miller is unquestionably a livinglegend and master of jazz. Hailed as theQueen of Swing, Miller first drew headswith her virtuosic dancing at age 12. Byher mid-teens she was performing inWhitey's Lindy Hoppers, ultimatelybecoming one of the most influential swingdancers in Jazz history, with particularlymemorable dance performances inHellzapoppin' and A Day at the Races.

As Miller's career progressed, so did herdesire to serve as an advocate for the musicand for dance, prompting her to broadenher involvement in the cultural discussionand publish a number of books on jazz anddance, notably the memoir Swingin' at theSavoy, essential reading for any jazz fan.In that essay, she offers a remarkable andalternate perspective on the history of jazz, drawn from the perspective of Swing Eradancers and highlighting their role as driv-ers and tastemakers of the music.

Miller points out that the music and thedance were inextricably linked. "We were arace of people that came out of slavery, thelowest depth of the human spirit one couldcome from," she notes. "But we brought asound and love and created what we calljazz. I was born in Harlem, which was abed of freedom for black people. People

Norma Miller

could come and do what they wanted, andfrom that we developed our dance. Ithelped us overcome what our people hadbeen through and it was a truly specialfeeling. It spread around the world."Indeed, Miller's comment may even be anunderstatement; her role in creating andpopularizing the Lindy Hop makes her oneof the most important dancers in history, and it earned her a National HeritageFoundation Fellowship in 2003.

As her work in chronicling and advocat-ing for jazz and dance continued, Millerfound herself increasingly drawn to educa-tional roles and began to engage heavily asa teacher, something she continues to do tothis day. "Jazz is a compilation of sounds. My style was the swing sound, which callsfor the big band," she explains. "I was justin New Orleans for the Louis ArmstrongJazz Camp and there was so much lovethat I saw there. You see, we train youngpeople how to play jazz, because if youdon't teach them how to play it, we won'thave jazz anymore. The heritage of thismusic must continue, because it's the onestyle where all people can come together. It's the rainbow."

As she prepares to participate in theCharlie Parker Jazz Festival on Aug. 22,sharing the bill with Dr. Lonnie Smith,Andy Bey, Jeff "Tain" Watts and CamilleThurman, Miller laughs at a certain ironyin the festival's honoree. "You see, I haveaccused Charlie Parker of destroying theworld of dance from which I came," Millernotes. "He was looking for a new sound, but it screwed up our rhythm! It wasn'tgood for dancing, but it did start a newgeneration of music. Everything did turnout all right in the end; we had to learnhow to co-exist."

John Yao, who has quintet and sextetrecords under his belt, hits at theGreenwich Music House this month inalignment with his first large ensembleoffering, Flip Flop. Rather than ascribingthe usual "big band" label to the project,Yao bills the group as his "17-PieceInstrument."

On the evolution of his composing forbig band, he says, "In the beginning you'retrying to not break any of the rules. Then, over time, when you get more familiar withthose boundaries you begin to step out ofthem." Listen for angular melodies andrhythmic superimpositions on his tune"Hellgate" as evidence of a matured com-poser.

His craftsmanship lends itself to a pow-erful full-ensemble effect. But the band'sunison is founded on camaraderie withineach instrumental family. "When I see otherplayers having fun with the people in theirsection—whether it's a brass or saxophone

soli, or a shout-chorus, there's a sense ofpride and everyone gets really into it."

His advice to students new to the under-taking of big band writing: "Get in thereand do it. Hear your music played. You aregoing to learn the most in the shortestamount of timeby having yourmusic playedback to you."

For many years Bob Litwak was the chief cardiothoracic surgeon at Mt. Sinai. He alsoliked to swing on the drums. On a gig with Bob, Ted Nash showed up wearing a new shirt, the label of which was irritating his neck. As the band was setting up, Ted asked Bob if hehad any scissors with him. Bob said "Yes, I believe I have some in my bag." Ted said "Great, because I have something back here that is really bothering me and needs to be cut off."

Bob shook his head and said "No, Ted, that would have to be done in the office in a ster-ile environment. I can't do that here." He thought Ted was asking him to remove a growthfrom his neck. Ted explained what he had in mind. Bob joined his laughter and them pro-ceeded to expertly snip away the tag in the back of his shirt. Ted laughed to think he had oneof the most prestigious heart surgeons in the world cutting out his label.

ERIC REEDNEWARK MUSEUM / AUGUST 6It was inside his father's storefront church that pianist Eric Reed was first movedto music. Later, hearing recordings by Ramsey Lewis, Art Blakey and DaveBrubeck, he embraced a career that had him playing with Buddy Collette, FreddieHubbard and Joe Henderson, recording and touring the world with WyntonMarsalis, writing music for film and dance, and recording more than 20 releases asleader. Reed's daring expression and sophistication has shown us why someone likeThelonious Monk is the baddest, bluest, most adventuresome and danceable Monk.On his latest recording, Groovewise (Smoke Sessions), Reed's sensitivity and spiritcreate moving celebrations of Mulgrew Miller, Ornette Coleman and CliffordJordan. Reed is joined by bassist David Baron and drummer Aaron Kimmel.

BUCKY PIZZARELLIMORRISTOWN JAZZ FESTIVAL / AUGUST 15When it comes to guitar, Bucky Pizzarelli could be the template for anybody pick-ing up an instrument with six (or seven) strings. Pizzarelli started with VaughnMonroe, toured the world with Benny Goodman, played at the White House, was afixture on "The Tonight Show" band, worked and recorded with Frank Sinatra andholds a place on the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame. He's been part of many classicrecordings in all genres, including hits with Dion and The Belmonts. Pizzarelli'sguitar encounters with Tal Farlow and Les Paul are legendary. Pizzarelli can gofrom a beautiful ballad to swinging hard in the tradition of Freddie Green with theBasie band. Bucky Pizzarelli's Guitar Summit is the festival fare with fellow gui-tarists Frank Vignola, Vinnie Raniola and Ed Laub joining the master.

PAQUITO D'RIVERAMONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL / AUGUST 15Cuba's musical legacy is one of tremendous variety. Saxophonist/clarinetist/com-poser Paquito D'Rivera moves seamlessly through different styles with amazingflexibility. One moment he can display brilliant classical articulation, moving fluid-ly to bebop in the next. Starting at age 10, he performed with Cuba's NationalTheatre Orchestra, was a founding member of the multi-genre Irakere, leading to acareer touring and recording with his small groups and featured as soloist withmany jazz and classical orchestras. D'Rivera's musical inventions have given himmultiple Grammy awards in both jazz and classical. He has celebrated his goodfriend Dizzy Gillespie and his latest recording, Aires Tropicales (Paquito), finds himin a gorgeous setting with the Cuban string group Quinteto Cimarron.

FREDDY COLESHANGHAI JAZZ / AUGUST 14-15Freddy Cole was the subject of a 2006 documentary, "The Cole Nobody Knows."With seven Grammy nominations and hundreds of appearances yearly, he's nowthe Cole everybody knows! With a rich baritone voice surrounded by piano skillsreminiscent of Oscar Peterson, John Lewis or Teddy Wilson, he can deliver a touch-ing ballad, a trip to Rio, a salute to Billy Eckstine or late-night blues from Chicago'sSouth Side. Cole's guitarist Randy Napoleon calls him a "musical GPS" with a sensememory of 5,000 songs! In celebration of his brother Nat Cole, Freddie's ready todeliver Straighten Up and Fly Right, Sweet Lorraine and Mona Lisa, along with ataste of Duke Ellington, Michel Legrand, Luis Bonfa and Billy Joel.

"MATT BREWER HAS ESTABLISHEDa foothold as one of the stalwart youngbass players on the progressive jazz scene"(NY Times). Also a composer, bandleaderand recording artist, Brewer's creditsinclude Lee Konitz, Steve Coleman,Terence Blanchard, Gonzalo Rubalcaba,Jeff "Tain" Watts and Greg Osby.

Q. Tell me something about your latestrecording project. A. The only record I've done as a leader

is my recent album on Criss Cross,Mythology. I had been wanting to make arecord for quite some time, but had beenpretty busy with sideman work (andmaybe a little lazier than I'd like toadmit)... Everyone on the record is one ofmy absolute favorite musicians on theirrespective instruments and I was genuine-ly surprised and delighted that they wereall available at the same time. Q. What, other than your own record-

ings, have you been listening to lately? A. I've been a little obsessed with the

first track on Sly Stone's album Fresh. That whole album is great but I catchmyself listening to "In Time" over andover. I'm always listening to some Coltranealbum or another, and some Miles albumas well. I got Amandala on vinyl recentlyand I love the writing. I love Miles fromany and all time periods. Porgy and Bess isprobably one of my top five favorite albums

of all time. Other things on the turntablerecently have been Lightning Hopkins,Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies, AphexTwin, Bartok's Music for StringsPercussion and Celeste, Hank Mobley SoulStation (and anything with PaulChambers, really) and that record thatBen Webster and Sweets Edison didtogether with George Duvivier on bass. Q. What sort of intelligence, mind set

does it take to appreciate jazz? A. None. I've never thought it was a

music only for the elite. If you can findbeauty in literature, film or art of anykind, you can find it in jazz. The idea thatyou need to acquire some secret knowledgeto be in the club is antithetical to whatmusic should be about. Q. Can jazz be taught? To play it, appre-

ciate it? A. I'd mostly say yes. It's like anything

else (science, cooking, sports). Most aspectsof it can be taught, but aptitude and natu-ral ability play a role. Some of the mostbeautiful aspects of our favorite musiciansare the things that cannot be taught. Ihave musician friends who have been gift-ed from a young age and others that had towork more constantly throughout theirlife. Hard work is important no matterwhat your ability, though.Q. You're from Oklahoma City and

spent your youth in Albuquerque. How andat what age were you exposed to jazz? A. Oklahoma at one time had many

greats. Charlie Christian, Don Byas andChet Baker, were all from there. Mygrandfather was a great musician andplayed trumpet with Charlie Barnett,

“I've never thoughtit was a music onlyfor the elite. If youcan find beauty inliterature, film or

art of any kind, youcan find it in jazz.”

Woody Herman and Bob Wills and theTexas Playboys. He died before I was born, but those stories and bootleg recordingswere an early inspiration. My dad playstrombone and teaches music and showedme a lot about theory at a young age. Mymother had a radio show and interviewedlots of jazz greats. Her mother was a greatmusic lover as well so there was constant-ly music in the house. I started playingbass when I was ten.Q. A couple of your favorite websites,

blogs, apps?A. I'm not too up on any of the blogs. I've

read Ethan Iverson's blog and enjoyed theinterviews there. I think it's great that amusician is taking the initiative to haveconversations with some of the masters. Amusician will conduct an interview in away that's different than say, a critic. Q. How has technology changed your

recorded music listening habits?A. We all have tons of music on our

phones and if there's something we want toget, it's a couple clicks away. That's goodand bad. When faced with so many optionsit becomes difficult to focus on any onething. I don't think people listen to entirerecords as much as they used to. The soundquality suffers nowadays as well. All thechopping up and digitizing of sound infor-mation that your brain has to then putback together is probably tiring whetherwe realize it or not. Q. A life in music: more perspiration or

inspiration? A. Hard work is important, but if you

don't love what you do it's hard to staymotivated and keep getting better. Also, Ithink audiences can sense inspiration, loveand sincerity and are attracted to it.Q. If there's an afterlife, one piece of

music you heard here that you'll rememberthere?A. Bach's B minor Mass. Q. Your favorite musician of all-time? A

favorite or two playing or composingtoday?A. Kind of impossible to pick one! I

could say John Coltrane and that would bepretty honest. Although I'd really want tosay Miles and Bach too. As far as peopletoday, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcabaand Mark Turner are very inspiring to me.I learned a ton from being in Greg Osby'sband when I was younger, too. Q. You are having a dinner party and

can invite three musicians. Who wouldthey be?A. I like getting people together over

food and drink to listen to music or talkabout things. If I could invite anybody fromthe past I'd think I'd invite TheloniousMonk, Elvin Jones and John Coltrane.
