travel were recorded on cave walls about 6,000 years ago

● As more people traveled, more hospitality businesses developed

HospitalityThe word hospitality comes from the Latin word hospes, which means host or guest. Hospitality has come to mean meeting the needs of guest with kindness and goodwill.

Hospitality is a “people serving people business.” Service is at the heart of the hospitality business. The goal of the hospitality industry is to make sure that guests feel good, safe and happy.

The hospitality industry provides services to people away from home. These services include the following, which are the components of Hospitality and Tourism:

● Food & Beverage● Lodging● Recreation Amusement and Attraction● Travel & Tourism

Food and BeverageThe food and beverage industry consists of businesses that prepare food for customers. It is also called the foodservice industry.

● Casual● Fancy● Large● Small

Many food and beverage businesses are located in another business. For example, movie theater, malls, airports and cafeterias located in schools.

LodgingLodging means a place to sleep for one or more nights. Accommodation is another word often used to mean a place to sleep. The lodging industry consists of businesses that provide overnight accommodations. Accommodations can be found to fit any price range and level of service.

RecreationRecreation is any activity that people do for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment. The goal of recreation is to refresh a person’s body and mind. There are four types of recreation businesses:● Entertainment - provides a show for you to

watch● Attractions - places of special interest to visit● Spectator Sports - sports that you watch others

play● Participatory Sports - sports that you take part

in

Travel & TourismThe travel and tourism industry consist of two parts. The travel industry consists of businesses that physically move people from one place to another. Modes of transportation include:

● Automobiles● Bus● Train● Ship● Airplane

The tourism industry consists of businesses that organize and promote travel and vacations. Businesses in tourism industry include:

● Travel Agencies● Tour Operators● Cruise Companies● Meeting & Convention Planners● Local and National Tourism Bureaus

One of the main functions of tourism businesses to to plan vacations and tours. A vacation might involve several different hospitality businesses.

A package is a trip that includes several segments of the hospitality industry, such as transportation, lodging, meals and entertainment. One fee is charged for the package. You would either call the tour company or go online and sign up and pay. The tour company takes care of all the arrangements.

The Role of TravelPLEASURE TRAVEL

Travel that is done for rest and relaxation. A vacation is a period of time during which a

person is free from daily obligations, such as school and work.

BUSINESS TRAVEL

Travel that people do as part of their jobs. The employer decides

where employees go and the employer pays for all the travel,

food and lodging expenses. Most companies budget a certain

amount of money for business travel each year.

Economic Impact of Travel and TourismThe World Travel and Tourism Council say that travel and tourism is the world’s largest industry. IN the USA, more than 18 million people work in the hospitality field. The hospitality industry provides approximately one of every eight jobs in the USA.

The hospitality industry is important to the U.S. economy because it generates more than $1 trillion each year. Whenever people travel, they spend money on:

● Transportation● Food● Lodging● Entertainment● Gifts

International visitors to the USA insert over $100 billion directly into the U.S. economy.

Components of Hospitality and Tourism Assignment

For each component of hospitality (food and beverage, lodging, recreation, travel and tourism) list the follow:

A place you’ve been before - how was your experience, give it a rating

A place you want to go - why this specific place? What would you be looking forward to?

A place you dislike - why don’t you like this place?

LodgingA place you’ve been:

I stayed here for my grandfather’s funeral in Gonzales, Louisiana. The

staff was respectful and willing to accommodate my entire family. All 6 of us slept in one room comfortably. They also had bomb breakfast. I’d

give it 8/10 stars!

A place you want to go:

I’ve seen vlogs of people staying at the W hotel and it has a luxe feel.

Some rooms have an entire kitchen and garden tub. I would look forward to the overpriced room service and

soaking tub.

A place you dislike:

I’ve never had good experiences with the Best Western. I don’t like the

room decor and the restroom are always tiny. The last time I went they only had cereal for breakfast. It also

didn’t help that it was stale.
