To our belovedFamily, Friends, and Supporters I can’t believe another year has come and gone. It has been a very busy year, between opening an extension office in Burley, preparing for our recertification process with Community Health Accreditation Partner (CHAP), and always thinking outside the box when providing exemplary care for our patients and families.

I am happy to say we had 16 applicants for our Joseph Rasch Scholarship this year. Because we had so many qualified applicants and adequate funding, our team decided to award one applicant for the Fall semester and one applicant for the Spring semester of 2020. Becken Goff was awarded the Fall of 2019 Scholarship. The scholarship committee will anounce the Spring semester winner at a later date due to the necessary steps that need to be completed before the scholarship can be awarded.

This year we continued our Annual Joseph T. Rasch Run/Walk that assists us in the funding of this special nursing scholarship. This year’s event was held May 11th of 2019, Mother’s Day Weekend! Having our event on Mother’s Day Weekend enables Joe’s family, and all the other supporters of this special event to get together and remember our Joe. He was such a great person and nurse and his memory remains near and dear in our hearts. So mark your calendars for next year’s event, which will be held on May 9, 2020. If you would like to join us for this special event, please call the office for more information.

I send out an on-going thank you to Joe’s family, as they continue to play a vital role in assisting us with funding for this scholarship. If you know of anyone who is interested in applying for this scholarship, please have them visit our website at www.hospicevisions.org, or call the office at (208) 735-0121 and speak to Tracy Fien. Our dateline for accepting applications is from March 1st to April 30th, annually.

During our fiscal year from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019, we provided direct patient care to 304 patients and families throughout Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka, and Twin Falls counties. In addition, our bereavement services connected us to 214 individuals and families regardless of their affiliation with our services. We offer our “Visions of Hope” grief support group to anyone who is experiencing a loss. So if you know of anyone who may benefit from this service, please have them call our office for details.

Our compassionate care and specialized patient and family focus could not exist without the generous support of our team, volunteers, board of directors, families and friends, and the community as a whole. Thank you for your continued support of Hospice Visions, Inc. We look forward to continuing to enhance our partnerships with our community, and to be the hospice of choice to ensure that no one experiences the end-of-life journey alone, afraid, or in pain.

Hospice Visions volunteers exemplify making the most of everyday and that hospice is about living, not dying. They

are community members that seek purpose and significance in their lives, while instilling those very attributes in those that they visit.

Some patients request a celebration of life or life legacy video so that their family history, stories, humor, and audible voices can be remembered for generations to come. Frank and Jeanene are our expert videographers that accomplish this calling. Patients, and all residents of a local assisted living facility, receive a bible study led by volunteer Darlene, each week. Pam has provided large print picture books and reads to patients who are unable to

speak. Denise brings her little Luna, a Yorkshire terrier, to delight some of our dog loving patients. Kady has assisted our local veteran’s council in designing a website for their organization, to disseminate pertinent information to the community, and for easier access for our veterans. In short, we love, appreciate, and revere each and every one of our volunteers!

In the early days of hospice, all services were carried out exclusively by volunteers. When Medicare made the decision to adopt hospice as a part of its system, it imposed conditions of participation upon all hospice organizations. All hospices must provide a minimum 5% of their patient care with volunteers.

We are delighted to report that over 85% of all of our volunteer hours are spent loving and caring for our patients. On most months, as a single-location operation, we meet the 5% cost share requirement set forth by Medicare. At the end of the day, it’s not about statistics. It’s about the comfort, care and love our volunteers shower on our patients and their families.

Veterans

Today, there are over 1.3 million Americans serving in United Stated Armed Forces. Hospice Visions, Inc. has the distinct honor of caring for veterans who served in WWII, Korea, Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Gulf War, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Global War on Terror, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the War Against the Islamic States, who are living with a life limiting disease, illness, or condition.

In March of 2019, Hospice Visions, Inc. was given the opportunity to become a Level Five We Honor Veterans Hospice Organization. We Honor Veterans is a partnership between the NHPCO (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization) and the Veterans Administration, to bring the special needs and challenges of veterans at the end of life to the forefront, to better care for them and their families. Our objective is to fulfill all the requirements of this distinctive certification above and beyond what is required to achieve our Level Five, by February 2020.

Our Veteran to Veteran Volunteers, Manny and Levi, are busy visiting our veteran patients and their families each month. Because they speak their own language and have an unspoken brotherhood, that can’t be achieved by civilians. We are so thankful for Levi and Manny, who have stepped up to serve those who’ve served in such a deep and meaningful way!

America, America, God shed His grace on thee, and crowned thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

5TH AnnualVietnam Welcome Home Celebration

On July 13th, 2019, we had the privilege of hosting the 5th Annual Vietnam Commemorative Welcome Home Celebration to honor and remember our Vietnam veterans, and give them a proper welcome home. Twenty four motorcycles and motorcyclists gathered in the park to enjoy a pancake breakfast prepared by the Believers Church, donuts from Jim Bob’s Bakery, and coffee at the POW/MIA table.

At 10:00am, the color guard presented. Then, the motorcycles, led by Sergeant Ken Mencl and crew, roared through the towns of Kimberly, Hansen, Jerome, and then returned to the Twin Falls City Park. While passing through Hansen and Jerome, the riders stopped at the Veterans Cemetery/Vietnam Memorial Park to remember and pay respect to their fallen brothers and sisters.

This year, we were privileged to have Richard Cesler, Sr. and Sheriff Tom Carter share a few words with us about their experience in Vietnam. Their passionate words were moving, powerful, and inspiring. Everyone from the community who attended, enjoyed free BBQ courtesy of Fred Meyer, Independent Meat, Scarrow Meat, Jerry Gunter, Pepsi, and Coke. We served lunch to approximately 250 people in the park to welcome home our Vietnam veterans! See you again in 2020!

Bob Rynbrand

What about Bob?… Where to begin?

On December 2nd, 2015, Hospice Visions, Inc. received a gift of gi-normous proportion. His name was Bob. Bob Rynbrand signed on to be a Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer. He loved his veterans; his brothers, as he called them. He would say, “we speak our own language that you civilians simply can’t understand,” and he was right. Bob loved his career in the Navy, volunteering for Rising Stars Equine Therapy, and volunteering for his veterans on hospice.

On April 25th, 2019, Bob unexpectedly passed away, leaving a void in the lives of all who knew him.

At times, Bob was visiting up to 18 veterans who were in the care of Hospice Visions, Inc. He would find a way to connect with each of them, using military jargon or terms, that were universally understood veteran to veteran. There were times when a veteran would be admitted onto our services that appeared as though a volunteer might not be necessary. Bob would always go and work his magic. More times than not, he would connect with that patient in a way that only he could. Bob had a gift that he shared with everyone at Visions, and he is sorely missed. So, for one last time, thank you for your service, Bob!

Home Safe Home

Hospice Visions, Inc. cultivates the well-being and livelihood of the residents of the Magic Valley, regardless of their enrollment in our services. As a result, the Home Safe Home program was developed and is provided at no cost in order to allow professional staff to work along-side our neighbors, especially when lacking the knowledge or resources to help themselves.

Throughout the year, the team at Hospice Visions, Inc. has assisted multiple local citizens in identifying resources for and delivery of medical equipment such as lift chairs, hospital beds, and motorized wheelchairs.

A mother was referred to Home Safe Home by a local physician. She is the primary caregiver for her adult son and husband, both of whom have dementia. The mother needed to have a surgery on her hand/wrist that would prevent her from performing many of the cares she provides on a daily basis for her son and husband. Her surgery was scheduled for four days from the time of the call to Home Safe Home and she was concerned with being able to find a caregiver on short notice. The Home Safe Home team assisted in finding availability of in-home care services to provide the needed support of the next 8-10 weeks while she heals.

A patient’s son reached out to Home Safe Home about his father who lives alone in his home, while his family lives out of state. The son was worried about his father, who has had several falls recently, and needed advice on improving home safety so his father can stay in his home independently as long as possible. The Home Safe Home team made a visit to the father’s home and performed a home safety assessment, personal needs assessment, and a brief psychosocial assessment. Home safety recommendations were provided, along with contact information for appropriate resources. The team also provided referrals to several Home Care agencies, and encouraged both father and son to reach out at any time with additional concerns.

People tend to struggle when having conversations with their loved ones, especially the need for additional in-home care or a move to a higher level of care. Through our Home Safe Home program, the social work team at Hospice Visions, Inc. helps our local families engage their loved ones in intermediate and long-term care planning.

“It takes a village,” or in our case, a community, that works together to bring about a greater good for all its people, our neighbors.

Since the birth of Hospice Visions, Inc., in 1995 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, our goal has been to provide exemplary comfort, care, and love to anyone facing a life limiting illness or condition regardless of their ability to pay. Approximately 16.52% of Idahoans are still uninsured and may find themselves in need of Hospice care. Hospice Visions, Inc., is here for you, and your family. Through the generous support from the community, fundraising events, thoughtful donations, and grant opportunities, we are able to offer extra supportive services such as light touch massage and life legacy DVD’s, to our patients and their families, in addition to exceptional hospice care.

In 2018, we recognized gifts in kind in excess of $20,000 in goods and services, to support our Annual Golf Tournament, the Commemorative Vietnam Welcome Home Celebration, and the Magic Valley Festival of Giving. Many thanks to all our local merchants, venders, and services who have given so generously, to assure that our fund raisers and events are successful, so that we can continue to provide the best in Hospice care to our patients and their families, helping them to make the most of every day.

Website Donations We are happy to report that our hospicevisions.org donations are up, and the website is easier than ever to use. We have added a PayPal selection in addition to our standard pay option. Reserve your butterfly for the Live Butterfly Release, help support our Veterans events and celebrations, register your golf team for our annual tournament, or leave a gift in memory of a loved one, all online. Through the partnership of our vendor, our donation website is secure, safe, and convenient!

On August 18th, 2018, Hospice Visions, Inc. conducted its 24th Annual Flo Slatter Memorial Golf Tournament at Clear Lake Country Club in Buhl, Idaho. There were 29 teams, 27 tee box sponsors, and 114 community donors, with countless Hospice Visions, Inc. staff members and volunteers, that made this tournament not only a great fundraising success, but literally put the fun in fundraising! Clear Lake Country Club offers one of the most scenic courses in the Magic Valley. We deeply appreciate them hosting our tournament every year.

There were three chances for a hole-in-one prize this year, thanks to Wills Toyota, Pinnacle Technologies, and Jensen’s Jewelers. Everyone enjoyed margaritas provided by Fishers Technology, and beer provided by Magic Valley Distributing and Watkins Distributing. Falls Brand gave everyone a well-needed hot dog break, before golfers attempted to win a Toyota Corolla with a hole-in-one shot on hole number 5. When all the golfers had finished the course, everyone gathered at the covered grove for a buffalo burger provided by Ravenspur Bison Ranch and grilled trout provided by Clear Springs Foods.

Our wonderful community partners, merchants, and businesses provided us with over $17,000 in donated raffle prizes. This ensured that most, if not all of our golfers went home with something special from the tournament. With all the loving support we receive from our golfers and tee box sponsors, we raised over $14,000, which will help us provide exemplary hospice care to those who are uninsured, underinsured, or without means to pay for their care. Hospice Visions, Inc. turns no one away.

Memorial Golf Tournament

This year’s Magic Valley Festival of Giving was a milestone, not only because the event raised over $310,000 for Magic Valley’s nonprofit organizations, but also because it found a new home.

Brad and Linda Lanting moved to Idaho in June of 2018. They chose the Fleur de Lis Ranch to be their new home. They soon inquired as to how they could make a positive difference in their new home town. They heard that the Magic Valley Festival of Giving needed a new home, and within days, they decided to host this remarkable event in a completely different “arena” than years before. We are all so thankful for their generosity, innovative ideas, and new found enthusiasm.

We are incredibly grateful to partners Mark and Debra Hansen for taking on this daunting project and keeping it alive.

From open to close, there was a bustle of activity intended to delight visitors, raise money for giving, and help organizations in the Magic Valley. The opening gala dinner event, with its live auction and entertainment, was a well-attended and extremely elegant soiree’. There were Disney princesses, Santa Claus, and more. The Standing Ovation Talent Cabaret was sold out, as it showcased our community’s finest talent and showmen.

Topping off the events were the beautiful and festive Christmas trees and gala table center pieces. In keeping with our desire to be unique, Hospice Visions, Inc. chose the “Modern Christmas Tree” to represent our one-of-a-kind organization. We were presented with a check for $8,150 by the Magic Valley Festival of Giving team members, to further our exemplary hospice care to all those in need, regardless of their ability to pay. It is a privilege to be able to participate in this annual event and experience the true meaning of community and kinship. It was truly magical.

Thank you for allowing us tobe part of your incredible event.

On June 13th, 2019, Hospice Visions, Inc. hosted the 7th Annual Live Butterfly Release at Canyon Crest Event Center. This unique experience is offered to all members of our community. This special event is designed to remember and connect with passed loved ones, by whispering a message to the butterflies and then releasing them to deliver that message to those we love who have crossed over from this life unto the next.

Over 400 butterflies were released from the veranda, overlooking the Snake River Canyon. There was live music of love, hope, and remembrance by Brianne Hepworth. The butterfly story, and significance of the butterfly to Hospice Visions, Inc., was told by Chaplain Paul Jordan, and the names of all the loved ones being remembered, were read aloud in honor and reflection of the lives they lived, and the impact they had on our lives.

7TH AnnualButterfly Release

Each year, The Quilting Spuds, a local quilting group, get together to create a work of art using thread, fabric, their incredible talent, and lots of love for Hospice Visions, Inc. Their excellent work helps to raise the funds needed to support our patients who are uninsured, underinsured, or without the funds to pay for their end-of-life care. This year's theme was “Our North American Heritage,” dedicated to the Native Americans of North America.

We tried to market this year’s quilt in a different way from previous years. We used Facebook's live streaming platform, in an attempt to auction off this amazing quilt. We received some participation and recognition, but ultimately, the reserve bid was not met by the end of the auction.

The clear winners, however, were our amazing staff and volunteers. Visions employees and volunteers raised over $2,400 in raffle ticket sales. One of our favorite former employees, Jessica Gratzer, was the winning ticket holder. Congratulations Jessica and super job Visions staff and volunteers!

The Quilting Spuds"Our North American Heritage"

Each year, since 2006, St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center has awarded us funding through their Community Health Improvement Fund. These dollars are used to ensure Hospice Visions, Inc. can meet the needs of our community by defraying costs and providing care at our “Visions of Home” hospice house. Hospice Visions, Inc. provides hospice care in this peaceful, quiet, home-like environment to those with limited income as if it were the patient’s own home. Without the help of our community, local businesses, and legacy donations, our ability to provide access to quality, compassionate care and supportive services would be impacted

“Visions of Home”Hospice House

It is on behalf of the “Visions of Home” Hospice House that we host the “Art for Hospice” art show and fundraiser event. Artists throughout Idaho come together to exhibit their paintings, in hopes of selling a few to local art enthusiasts. 25% of each painting sold goes directly to the “Visions of Home” Hospice House. “Art for Hospice” is an attempt to change the paradigm of traditional fundraising, in that it not only benefits the “Visions of Home” Hospice House, but it also allows a unique venue to showcase some of Idaho’s best talent and display the best-of-the-best artwork in our community.

Special thanks goes to Maria Smith and Kathy Eddington (Lilyfield) for their tireless work with the artists and during the exhibit to insure its success. Twenty three artists showed their very best art work, first at the private showing “Gala” event, and again the following day to the entire community. In hopes of drawing a larger audience of art lovers, this year’s event was held at the Hilton Garden Inn on Pole Line Road in Twin Falls. Each artist was present to greet their public and to talk about their works and inspirations, as well as commission new paintings.

Two months following this signature event, we sadly had to say goodbye to our founding artist and friend, Maria Smith. Maria passed away on December 7th, 2018, in her home in Eden, Idaho. She has left a lasting memory in the Magic Valley through her art classes, her “Best of the Best” artwork, and innovative ways of sharing her talent and others in a charitable manner. We will always remember you, Maria!
